Women's Human Rights : Issues of Implementation in Sri Lanka

Vega Leyton, Birgitta January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is about issues concerning the implementation of women's human rights in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has had a conflict between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam, LTTE for two decades. Since 2002 there has been a ceasefire agreement in place, which is being violated by both parties. Before being abandoned in 2003, one woman was present during the peace talks that were held. In this paper I present the results of my field research conducted in Sri Lanka in November and December of 2005. The aim was to find out how women were active in the peace process since it is stipulated in international conventions that they have a right to participation. During the interviews with women activists it became evident that women were not involved in the official peace process. Therefore the thesis is about women’s human rights in Sri Lanka and the obstacles for their implementation. Two main reasons for the lack of implementation of women’s human rights in Sri Lanka are identified. Firstly, for reasons of culture and patriarchal structures, there is a general lack of implementation internationally of women’s human rights. Secondly, the unresolved conflict situation in Sri Lanka, which reflects the unequal power relations between men and women that existed prior to the conflict. The lack of implementation of women’s human rights in Sri Lanka results in women not being present in the political life and they are therefore not part of the official peace process. International conventions such as the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, CEDAW and the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on peace and security are addressed in the thesis in order to examine women’s human rights and their right to participation in politics and peace building. Finally, I conclude that in order to include women in the official peace negotiations women need to actively participate in politics. The method presented to ensure such participation is that of affirmative action. It is a measure that falls under the category of temporary measures, which is suggested in CEDAW article 4.1.

Irrigation and persistence in the dry zone of Sri Lanka : a geoarchaeological study

Gilliland, Krista January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents an independent, sediment-based record of landscape change within an agricultural hinterland. Established historical and archaeological sequences document the primary occupation of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s ancient capital, beginning ca. 400 BC and lasting until it was largely abandoned in AD 1017. Anuradhapura is located in the island’s dry zone, which depends almost completely on the unpredictable Northeastern Monsoon for water. Oral history and historical narratives have long held that large-scale irrigated rice cultivation took place in the hinterland to produce an agricultural surplus that sustained the urban and monastic populations. However, until the onset of the Anuradhapura Hinterland Project in 2005, the archaeological record of the hinterland was undocumented, leaving existing narratives untested. The geoarchaeological research presented here was undertaken as part of the Hinterland Project, in order to document the chronology and cultural and environmental processes that contributed to the formation of this irrigated landscape. Optical dating of sediments demonstrates that the onset of large-scale irrigation began ca. 400 BC, and the construction of new works continued until Anuradhapura’s late occupation period. Sampled reservoirs and channels began to infill, indicating widespread disuse, within ca. 100 years of Anuradhapura’s abandonment. Soil micromorphology and bulk sediment characterisation document hinterland habitation, water management, and cultivation activities prior to the establishment of large-scale irrigation. This work illustrates the coping strategies that people employed to deal with the vagaries of the dry zone environment and demonstrates that hinterland land use changed throughout the primary occupation period. Although largescale irrigation works infilled relatively rapidly, cultural activity and land use re-emerged following this period of disuse.

Developing a model for prodicting customer satisfaction in relation to service quality in University libraries in Sri Lanka

Jayasundara, Chaminda Chiran 11 1900 (has links)
Customer satisfaction, from the service quality perspective, has emerged as a new modus operandi for assessing customers’ perceptions and/or expectations of services in order to re-orient and regulate existing services. University library administrators in Sri Lanka, realising the necessity of complying with customer perception of high quality service, have begun to search for alternative ways to satisfy their clientele on the basis of service quality. This study therefore aims to meet this need by developing a model to assess the extent to which service quality indicators and other explanatory attributes may be used to predict customer satisfaction, from a service quality perspective. The research process used in the study was the “onion model,” which involved a combination of positivist and phenomenological inquiries that led to the use of qualitative and quantitative approaches in line with the purpose of the study, which was exploratory in nature and searched for causality. The design of the study involved two main stages: the exploratory stage and the main stage. In the exploratory stage, attributes and domain identification of service quality was carried out with a sample of 262 subjects. Based upon the exploratory study, four provisional models were constructed and tested in the main study, using a sample of 1840 subjects. The model based on the performance-only paradigm and the linearity assumption between the constructs was found to be the best parsimony model that provided for enhanced predictive performance, calibration and potential insight into attributes and domain relevance. Regarding overall satisfaction, responsiveness, supportiveness, building environment, collection and access, furniture and facilities, technology and service delivery as quality domains, involvement with the service, and knowledge of the customers as situational attributes and age, member category, university and gender as socio-demographic attributes were found to be significant. The final model may be used to design a simple measurement or monitoring process of library performance, and it may also be a useful tool for diagnosing service quality locally. This research further provides a keystone for other studies and may also stimulate the momentum of current research on service quality and/or customer satisfaction / Information Science / D. I perform an academic adventure experiencing new ways of autobiographical construction. My experiences in the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar – a yoga training program, experiential, of self-knowledge, of the potential and spiritualization development – constitute the core-narrative of this research. Living, narrating and reflecting about my attitude towards life are the basis on which rests this self-formation experience, in which the subject and researcher is united in a self-reflexive process. The general objective of this study was experiencing the trainer potential of the autobiographical research as self-formation and self-knowledge. I have sought to interpret and understand the senses/meanings of these experiences in the physical, energy, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, in the realm of my life and building my identity; take awareness of the changes arising in my life and of the resulting design; and yet, discover and understand the Hindu cultural universe implicit in the education/training proposal for adults in the Art of Living. Aiming to contribute in reinventing the multi-shape practices that compose the biographical method, I created an innovative methodology that called autobiographical meditation that consists of a method to access the founding experiences and/or training based on the spiritual practices of the Art of Living (asanas, pranayamas, sudarshan kryia® and meditation). After these practices, in a meditative state of calm and tranquility, the flow of thoughts is observed and transcribed to the paper without judgment or rationalization. The final narrative is structured in three central chapters. In the second chapter, I narrate an unforgettable trip to India where I lived a deep experience of inner peace, I plunged into the Hindu culture and Yoga, I experienced moments of pure spirituality and find the essence of the Self: existence, consciousness and happiness. In the following chapter I say how this spiritual adventure was started, my first contact with the stress control program through breathing and the Sudarshan Kriya® and how the changes began to take place at all levels of my physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual existence. The fourth chapter is dedicated to understand the expansion of my conscience, the obstacles that have made present and the profound changes that have spread to various areas of my life: personal, social and professional. In the last chapter I discuss about how living and acting in the world according to a spiritual ethics can become a teaching purpose for the Self, by the Self and through the Self. The autobiographical meditation was a way of great self-formation potential. In addition to facilitating the writing, it leads into a dive in the history of life itself, which is seen, felt, under the light of a more pure conscience, under the light of super-consciousness; it is a way of improving meditation. Narrating and reflecting on the experiences consisted of moments to recover the ownership of my own story, the story of my life, of my design as a person and as a professional. The writing process stimulated overcoming personal limits regarding low selfesteem, negativity, difficulties of writing and self-discipline; providing a higher understanding about my formative and personal history, and the emergence of a new identity and integration of the various parties of my Self.

A study of asymmetrical risk and how it is affected by positive screening and dynamic SRI

Jonsson, Kim, Larsson, Jacob January 2018 (has links)
Title: Investors risk exposure for sustainable investments – A study of asymmetrical risk and how it is affected by positive screening and dynamic SRI Level: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration Author: Kim Jonsson & Jacob Larsson Supervisor: Peter Lindberg Date: May, 2018 Aim: “Investigate whether a portfolios negative asymmetric risk, from an investors perspective, is influenced by positive screening based on dynamic SRI, based on ESG-factors”. Method: Construction of a hypothetical portfolio consisting of stocks, based on dynamic SRI and positive screening. Financial backtracking measures how the portfolio performed regarding asymmetric beta values, provided it was implemented during a historical period of time. The portfolio is reallocated according to predefined criteria in the beginning of each year during the historical period. Results: The constructed portfolio consistently demonstrates lower beta values than the market, both traditionally and asymmetrically. The asymmetric beta value, is for the period of time including the 2008 financial crisis, higher than traditional beta value at outcomes below the mean value, then decreases in negative outcomes. As the study is adjusted for the financial crisis, the result changes to show gradually decreasing beta values for outcomes below average and further negative outcomes. Conclusions: The study results indicate that selection criteria based on ESG factors and positive selection screening, under certain conditions, affect the asymmetric risk exposure of the portfolio. This conclusion also indicates that companies through active sustainability awareness have the opportunity to reduce their cost of capital, as investors' required rate of return declines. Contribution of the thesis: Practical insight regarding asymmetric risk analysis, and the fact that a portfolio composed of a limited amount of assets potentially demonstrates lower systematic risk exposure than the market. Furthermore, selection methods and selection criteria can affect asymmetric risk exposure. Suggestion for future research: If any of the sustainability factors are of greater significance regarding the asymmetric risk exposure. Further research within AMH and its paradigms is also necessary as random walk is questioned. Key words: Asymmetric risk, sustainability, ESG, beta value, dynamic SRI, positive screening, selection criteria, portfolio allocation and RobecoSAM

Součinitel tření povrchu vozovky a Skid Resistance Index / Pavement skid resistance and Skid Resistance Index

Nekulová, Pavla January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the relation between the longitudinal friction coefficient dependence on measuring speed and the value of road surface macrotexture MPD. Results of longitudinal friction coefficient and value of MPD measurement on 73 sections are included in this thesis. The results were compared by regression analysis and its outcome was used for determination of formula that enable calculation of longitudinal friction coefficient for any operating speed when longitudinal friction coefficient for 60 km/h and value of macrotexture are known. The evaluation scale for skid resistance index (SRI) was also determined in this thesis. It could be used for evaluation of skid resistance independently of the type of device used for friction coefficient measurement.

Improved Understanding of Water Balance in the Malwathu Oya River Basin Using SWAT and Remote Sensing / Förbättrad förståelse av vattenbalansen i Malwathu Oyas avrinningsområde med hjälp av SWAT och fjärranalys

Fors, Alexander January 2022 (has links)
As the need for climatic data is increasing in times of climate change and water scarcity, remote sensing (RS) and hydrological modelling are ways to battle these problems, especially in data scarce areas. The actual evapotranspiration (ETa) is one of the key parameters when assessing the water balance and a good estimate of this parameter is thus of great importance. In this study a hydrologicalmodel was created with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) over the Malwathu Oya river basin, Sri Lanka, and the SWAT ETa estimates were compared to RS derived ETa from FAO’s open access database WaPOR. A sensitivity analysis and a calibration with observed streamflow data of the SWAT model was conducted with the SUFI-2 algorithm in SWAT-CUP. The calibration was satisfactory and showed the following values for the performance parameters: R2 = 0.72, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency, NSE = 0.69, and Percent of Bias, PBIAS = -10.4. The most sensitive parameters were CN2 (runoff curve number for moisture condition II), SOL_AWC (soil available water capacity), and ESCO (soil evaporation compensation factor). The water balance partitioning from the calibrated SWAT model showed a ratio of 0.68 between ETa and precipitation as an annual average between 2012–2020. In the comparison between SWAT ETa and WaPOR ETa the SWAT ETa showed a clear underestimation, particularly during the drier Yala growing season (May – August). However, the SWAT land use classes representing the cultivated rice fields agreed well with WaPOR while the forest and range grasses were underpredicted. To increase the performance of SWAT in estimating ETa the following was recommended: improvement of the simulation of the shallow aquifers, more accurate forest parameters, deactivation of the default dormancy period in SWAT, calibration with ETa instead of streamflow, and a higher resolution soil map together with more soil measurements.

Risk Modeling of Sustainable Mutual Funds Using GARCH Time Series / Riskmodellering av hållbara fonder med GARCH-tidsserier

Malmgren, Erik, Zhang, Annie January 2020 (has links)
The demand for sustainable investments has seen an increase in recent years. There is considerable literature covering backtesting of the performance and risk of socially responsible investments (SRI) compared to conventional investments. However, literature that models and examines the risk characteristics of SRI compared to conventional investments is limited. This thesis seeks to model and compare the risk of mutual funds scoring in the top 10% in terms of sustainability, based on Morningstar Portfolio Sustainability Score, to those scoring in the bottom 10%. We create one portfolio consisting of the top 10% funds and one portfolio consisting of the bottom 10%, for European and global mutual funds separately, thus in total creating 4 portfolios. The analysis is based on data of the funds' returns and Morningstar Portfolio Sustainability Scores during December 2015 to August 2019. Investigating several GARCH models, we find an ARMA-GARCH model with skewed Student's t-distribution as innovation distribution to give the best fit to the daily log-returns of each portfolio. Based on the fitted ARMA-GARCH models with skewed Student's t-distribution, we use a parametric bootstrap method to compute 95% confidence intervals for the difference in long-run volatility and value at risk (VaR) between the portfolios with high and low Morningstar Portfolio Sustainability Scores. This is performed on the portfolios of European and global funds separately. We conclude that, for global and European funds respectively, no significant difference in terms of long-run volatility and VaR is found between the funds in each of the 10% ends of the Morningstar Portfolio Sustainability Score.

CSR i finansbranschen : Hållbarhetsrelaterade utmaningar ur tre olika finansiella aktörers perspektiv / CSR in the financial sector : Sustainability related difficulties from three financial actors point of view

Halef, Esmeralda January 2018 (has links)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability in the financial sector has in recent years become a highly discussed issue. In this study I have investigated the sustainability-related challenges facing the future of the Swedish financial market. By looking at the financial actors Swedbank, Folksam and Söderberg & Partners operations as well as talking with their respective sustainability managers, several challenges have been identified. One of them is being able to handle the risks that are involved in a shift from a non-sustainable business into a sustainable business. Another challenge is to understand the effect that one's actions lead to in the long run. A review of the EU Commission's report and action plan on the important role of the financial sector in meeting climate targets by 2030 has also revealed more challenges and opportunities for the financial market to develop its operations. The study also shows that the word CSR is not used in the financial sector anymore. They are using the word sustainability. Only in one perspective, companies talk about CSR and not sustainability. This is when companies talk about their philanthropic activities.
