Energy dependent time delays in blazar light curves : a first look at the modeling of source-intrinsic effect in the MeV-TeV range and constraints on Lorentz Invariance Violation with H.E.S.S.

Perennes, Cédric 18 September 2018 (has links)
Specific models of quantum gravity suggest the existence of a Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) at the Planck scale. One signature of that violation is a modification the propagation of photons in vacuum which induces energy dependent delays in the arrival time of photons on Earth. The H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) experiment can search for such delays in the arrival time of gamma rays, thanks to the very high energy emission coming from distant blazars. However, the time delay origin have to be fully understood. Indeed, an intrinsic time delay coming from the source can bias the constraints made on quantum gravity models. In the first part of this thesis, a time dependent blazar flare model is considered to search for the presence of intrinsic time delays related to the emission mechanisms of flares. With the elaboration of a simple scenario, this study highlights the different characteristics of intrinsic time delays in order to investigate how to disentangle them from delays due to LIV as well as to provide new constraints on blazar modeling. In the second part of this thesis, the method used to search for LIV signatures in blazar light curves at very high energy is presented as well as an application to the flare of Markarian 501 which occurred in July 2014. This analysis provides in particular the best upper limit on the quadratic term of LIV signature.

Quel son spatialisé pour la vidéo 3D ? : influence d'un rendu Wave Field Synthesis sur l'expérience audio-visuelle 3D / Which spatialized sound for 3D video ? : influence of a Wave Field Synthesis rendering on 3D audio-visual experience

Moulin, Samuel 03 April 2015 (has links)
The digital entertainment industry is undergoing a major evolution due to the recent spread of stereoscopic-3D videos. It is now possible to experience 3D by watching movies, playing video games, and so on. In this context, video catches most of the attention but what about the accompanying audio rendering? Today, the most often used sound reproduction technologies are based on lateralization effects (stereophony, 5.1 surround systems). Nevertheless, it is quite natural to wonder about the need of introducing a new audio technology adapted to this new visual dimension: the depth. Many alternative technologies seem to be able to render 3D sound environments (binaural technologies, ambisonics, Wave Field Synthesis). Using these technologies could potentially improve users' quality of experience. It could impact the feeling of realism by adding audio-visual spatial congruence, but also the immersion sensation. In order to validate this hypothesis, a 3D audio-visual rendering system is set-up. The visual rendering provides stereoscopic-3D images and is coupled with a Wave Field Synthesis sound rendering. Three research axes are then studied: 1/ Depth perception using unimodal or bimodal presentations. How the audio-visual system is able to render the depth of visual, sound, and audio-visual objects? The conducted experiments show that Wave Field Synthesis can render virtual sound sources perceived at different distances. Moreover, visual and audio-visual objects can be localized with a higher accuracy in comparison to sound objects. 2/ Crossmodal integration in the depth dimension. How to guarantee the perception of congruence when audio-visual stimuli are spatially misaligned? The extent of the integration window was studied at different visual object distances. In other words, according to the visual stimulus position, we studied where sound objects should be placed to provide the perception of a single unified audio-visual stimulus. 3/ 3D audio-visual quality of experience. What is the contribution of sound depth rendering on the 3D audio-visual quality of experience? We first assessed today's quality of experience using sound systems dedicated to the playback of 5.1 soundtracks (5.1 surround system, headphones, soundbar) in combination with 3D videos. Then, we studied the impact of sound depth rendering using the set-up audio-visual system (3D videos and Wave Field Synthesis).

[pt] ESTUDO DO ESCOAMENTO EM MODELO DE AORTA UTILIZANDO A VELOCIMETRIA POR IMAGENS ESTEREOSCÓPICAS DE PARTÍCULAS / [en] STEREOSCOPIC PARTICLE IMAGE VELOCIMETRY STUDY OF THE FLOW IN AORTIC MODEL

[en] Aortic stenosis is one of the most serious problems arising from valve diseases. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has become the preferred treatment for high-risk or inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis that could be a lifethreatening condition when left untreated. Due to the nature of the TAVI procedure, a variability on the tilt angle of the deployed valve is expected. The present work, investigated the effects on the flow field in the ascending aorta due angle variation of the transvalvular jet. Understanding the hemodynamic patterns of blood flow in the ascending aorta is important because they are closely related to the development of cardiovascular diseases. To this end, a patient-specific vascular phantom was produced by a 3D printed model and transparent silicon resin. A special setup was designed to allow measurements of the 3D flow at different cross sections of the aorta. A stereoscopic particle image velocimetry system was implemented to yield instantaneous and averaged turbulent flow information, such as three-dimensional average velocity fields, turbulent kinetic energy, and correlations between the components of velocity fluctuation. The results obtained indicated that the velocity field in the ascending aorta is strongly affected by the inlet flow direction into the aorta.

Freedom of Interpretation

Ivanov, Georgi 11 May 2012 (has links)
The photographic series Ideal Cities that I started in 2011 is inspired by the conflict between my idea of the “west” and my evolving experience in the United States. What struck me was the popularity of what I see as model experience – a spatial experience controlled by the Spectacle. In the terms of the Situationist International and its most prominent figure Guy Debord, the Spectacle is the collapse of reality into the streams of images, products and activities sanctioned by centralized monopolist business or state bureaucracy. Thus, personal experience is replaced with preconceived notions, which control the way people perceive and understand their surroundings.

Nutzen und Grenzen von 3D-Anzeigen in Fahrzeugen

Krüger, Karen 04 June 2008 (has links)
This thesis consists of the theoretical deduction and empirical evaluation of useful applications for monoscopic and (auto)stereoscopic 3D-displays in vehicles. For deducting hypotheses concerning the benefits and limits of 3D-displays, each subtask was tested for its potential benefits from a 3D-information presentation using a catalogue of confirmed advantages and disadvantages of 3D-displays. The proven 3D-advantages were summarized in five categories: integration, spatial compatibility, direction of attention, concreteness and attractiveness. Because it was presumed, that 3D-displays in vehicles are especially favorable for representing information about the vehicle surrounding in a 3D-perspective compatible to the drivers view, the empirical part was mainly focused on the application of 3D-displays for driver assistance systems. Using a 3D-display for adaptive cruise control (ACC), a general increase of attractiveness, acceptance and immediate comprehension for 3D-displays in comparison to conventional 2D-displays was confirmed. Simultaneously, well designed 3D-displays did not compromise perceptional safety and driver distraction. Design guidelines for 3D-displays in vehicles were concluded from the evaluation results and from literature analysis. Even though the expected 3D-benefit of spatially compatible information displays from the driver’s perspective was not confirmed for driver assistance systems like ACC with a constant layout of information, it still remains to be tested for continuous matching tasks like navigational checking in cars. The stereoscopic presentation of 3D-displays did not show advantages. On the contrary, an in-vehicle ASD even increased reaction times. In summery, the results suggest a distinctive application of well designed concrete and monoscopic 3D-displays for driver assistance systems and selected spatial functions which are difficult to explain using abstract notions or symbols.

Satellite based synthetic aperture radar and optical spatial-temporal information as aid for operational and environmental mine monitoring

Eloff, Corné 08 1900 (has links)
A sustainable society is a society that satisfies its resource requirements without endangering the sustainability of these resources. The mineral endowment on the African continent is estimated to be the first or second largest of world reserves. Therefore, it is recognised that the African continent still heavily depends on mineral exports as a key contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) of various countries. These mining activities, however, do introduce primary and secondary environmental degradation factors. They attract communities to these mining areas, light and heavy industrial establishments occur, giving rise to artisanal activities. This study focussed on satellite RS products as an aid to a mine’s operations and the monitoring of its environment. Effective operational mine management and control ensures a more sustainable and profitable lifecycle for mines. Satellite based RS holds the potential to observe the mine and its surrounding areas at high temporal intervals, different spectral wavelengths and spatial resolutions. The combination of SAR and optical information creates a spatial platform to observe and measure the mine’s operations and the behaviour of specific land cover and land use classes over time and contributes to a better understanding of the mining activities and their influence on the environment within a specific geographical area. This study will introduce an integrated methodology to collect, process and analyse spatial information over a specific targeted mine. This methodology utilises a medium resolution land cover base map, derived from Landsat 8, to understand the predominant land cover types of the surrounding area. Using very high resolution mono- and stereoscopic satellite imagery provides a finer scale analysis and identifies changes in features at a smaller scale. Combining these technologies with the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications for precise measurement of surface subsidence or upliftment becomes a spatial toolbox for mine management. This study examines a combination of satellite remote sensing products guided by a systematic workflow methodology to integrate spatial results as an aid for mining operations and environmental monitoring. Some of the results that can be highlighted is the successful land cover classification using the Landsat 8 satellite. The land cover that dominated the Kolomela mine area was the “SHRUBLAND/GRASS” class with a 94% coverage and “MINE” class of 2.6%. Sishen mine had a similar dominated land cover characteristic with a “SHRUBLAND/GRASS” class of 90% and “MINE” class of 4.8%. The Pléiades time-series classification analysis was done using three scenes each acquired at a different time interval. The Sishen and Kolomela mine showed especially changes from the bare soil class to the asphalt or mine class. The Pléiades stereoscopic analysis provided volumetric change detection over small, medium, large and recessed areas. Both the Sishen and Kolomela mines demonstrated height profile changes in each selected category. The last category of results focused on the SAR technology to measure within millimetre accuracy the subsidence and upliftment behaviour of surface areas over time. The Royal Bafokeng Platinum tailings pond area was measured using 74 TerraSAR-X scenes. The tailings wall area was confirmed as stable with natural subsidence that occurred in its surrounding area due to seasonal changes of the soil during rainy and dry periods. The Chuquicamata mine as a large open pit copper mine area was analysed using 52 TerraSAR-X scenes. The analysis demonstrated significant vertical surface movement over some of the dumping sites. It is the wish of the researcher that this dissertation and future research scholars will continue to contribute in this scientific field. These contributions can only assist the mining sector to continuously improve its mining operations as well as its monitoring of the primary as well as the secondary environmental impacts to ensure improved sustainability for the next generation. / Environmental Sciences / M. Réponse d'un jet rond subsonique à une excitation fluidique stationnaire et instationnaire / Response of a subsonic round jet to steady and unsteady fluidic actuation

Maury, Rémy 25 October 2012 (has links)
This work investigates the response of an axisymetric turbulent jet to steady and unsteady fluidic florcing where the azimuthal wavenumber-frequency (!,m) content of the perturbation is well known. The control setup is composed of 16 round microjets azimutally distributed around the nozzle lip. Such actuation can lead to a decrease in the acoustic energy radiated by the jet (especially for the steady case). The aerodynamic fied is investigated using hotwire measurements and time-resolved stereoscopic PIV. Using the unsteady forcing, phase-averaging is possible, and this allows the implementation of a triple decomposition of the measurements. Examination of the cyclic component of the flow response shows that a non-negligible phase-locked fluctuation is obtained over a large spatial extent, in other words, the actuation has good deterministic control authority over the flow. Furthermore, comparison of the cyclic component of the flow response with Linear Stability Theory supports the idea that the jet response comprises linear hydrodynamic instability waves. Subsequent analysis of jets controlled by steady fluidic actuation shows how the control effect can be explained by a mean-flow modification that leads to the reduction of instability-wave growth rates ; the mean flow modification is argued to be due to the introduction of azimuthal wavenumber-frequency pairs to which the mean flow is stable. The response is therefore turbulent, and involves Reynolds stresses which deform the mean-field such that the most unstable modes have lower growth rates.
