But, even so, I would like to say that I not only see this project as a narrative but also as research into themes that are dear to me in the production of fiction and in the observation of the world. Just the Title?s Missing is followed by the essay The Boxed Writer ? Or Who Wants to Be A Writer in Brazil and Other Questions for Characters Who Don?t Exist. This essay starts with my observation of some of the peculiarities of the character Edmundo Dornelles, the protagonist of Just the Title?s Missing. Such peculiarities reflect upon being a writer in Brazil, about this Boxed Writer image that I suggest and about other themes within the Brazilian literary field of the twenty-first century. / Este ? um trabalho de Escrita Criativa. This work consists of three chapters arranged interdependently. The first chapter provides ontological foundations concerning language and its connections with thought, mind, evolution and the world. Possible worlds theory, as well as knowledge and belief are also adressed in this chapter. Modality is approached as a phenomenon of the mind that is expressed in natural language in many ways, one of them, conditionals, is the focus of the analysis of this work. Chapter two concerns the formal approaches to the semantic analysis of modality in natural language, following the framework proposed by Kratzer (1977, 1979, 1981, 1986, 1991, 2012) with added discussions concerning evidentiality, epistemic modals, context and temporal and aspectual relations. Chapter three discusses the notions adressed in the previous chapter concerning their application in the analysis of Brazilian Portuguese epistemic indicative conditionals. This work seeks to provide theoretical improvements to the analysis of modality in natural language, as well as to expand the formal linguistic analysis of modality in Brazilian Portuguese. / Esta disserta??o busca discutir abordagens Kratzerianas atuais da modalidade e algumas de suas caracter?sticas relacionadas enquanto contextualizando-as ontologicamente, bem como ilustrando-as com a an?lise dos condicionais indicativos epist?micos do portugu?s brasileiro. Este trabalho consiste em tr?s cap?tulos organizados de forma interdependente. O primeiro cap?tulo fornece as funda??es ontol?gicas a respeito da linguagem e as suas conex?es com o pensamento, a mente, evolu??o e o mundo. A teoria de mundos poss?veis, bem como conhecimento e cren?a s?o abordados nesse cap?tulo. Modalidade ? tratada como um fen?meno da mente que ? expresso em linguagem natural de v?rias formas, uma delas, condicionais, ? o foco da an?lise nesse trabalho. Through the methodological approach developed by the German researcher Gabriele Rosenthal, sociologically established by the studies of Alfred Schutz, it was possible to permeate Joaquim?s life-world and understand how he experienced his mother?s death in a context of domestic violence. The focus of this research refers to the subjective and biographical construction of orphanage in a domestic violence context. After the biographical analysis steps, it was possible to compare manifest and latent contents of Joaquim?s narrative and come to the conclusion that, despite the importance in the interviewee?s life, the death of his mother is not the main episode of his biography. The connecting thread of his trajectory is the fact that he grew up in an orphan asylum, without his father and his mother. This situation is what makes Joaquim try to find resources to survive and get rid of the stigma. One of the distinguishing aspects of this work is that it connects the individual to the social spheres with the analysis of a single case ? Joaquim?s mother was murdered when he was five years old ? and, with this methodological approach, produces theory. Concepts of family, marital violence, death and orphanage are presented. The goal is to contribute with a discussion that still is not very explored in Brazil and to demonstrate how the biographical narrative approach can contribute with sociology in Brazil. / A presente pesquisa prop?e uma discuss?o acerca da viol?ncia dom?stica e da orfandade. Por meio da abordagem metodol?gica desenvolvida pela pesquisadora alem? Gabriele Rosenthal, sociologicamente fundamentada nos estudos de Alfred Schutz, foi poss?vel permear o mundo da vida de Joaquim e compreender de que maneira ele experienciou a morte da m?e em um contexto de viol?ncia dom?stica. O ponto central deste estudo refere-se ? constru??o subjetiva e biogr?fica da orfandade nestas circunst?ncias. Ap?s percorrermos os passos da an?lise biogr?fica foi poss?vel comparar conte?dos manifestos e latentes da narrativa do entrevistado e concluir que, apesar de marcante na vida de Joaquim, a morte da m?e n?o ? o tema central da sua biografia. O fio condutor da sua trajet?ria ? o fato de ter crescido em abrigo "sem pai nem m?e". ? com rela??o a esta situa??o que busca recursos para sobreviver e para se librar do estigma. Um dos diferenciais desta disserta??o est?, portanto, em conectar o individual com o social, a partir da an?lise de um caso ?nico - Joaquim que teve a m?e morta quando ele tinha cinco anos - e, com esta abordagem metodol?gica, produzir teoria. Para que se chegasse a este entendimento foram discutidos, ao longo do trabalho, conceitos centrados em fam?lia, viol?ncia dom?stica, morte e orfandade. O objetivo ? cooperar com um debate ainda pouco explorado no Brasil e tamb?m demonstrar de que maneira a abordagem de narrativa biogr?fica pode contribuir com a sociologia brasileira.

The study is based on the psycolinguistics perspective of reading, focusing on the research in foreing languages (CARRELL, 1988; GRABE, 2009; KODA, 2005). From this perspective, reading strategies are discussed as well as lower abilities such as lexical knowledge or parsing and higher abilities such as inferences. Moreover, reading models are analyzed and the interactive models (those who deal with bottom up and top down processing) are central to the dissertation.Perfetti?s model called Lexical Quality Hypothesis (2001, 2007) is also discussed. Another issue that underpins this investigation is the evolution of Computational Linguistics, specifically the area of Machine Translation. We analyse Google translator and how it can also be used as a reading strategy in English as a L2 to comprehend academic texts. In addition, this dissertation explores how the electronic translator can be utilized to teaching\learning of reading in English as a L2. In order to evaluate if this digital tool is a benefit to reading comprehension ten intermediate students from various nationalities from the English language institute of the University of Pittsburgh participated in the research. The methodology of Verbal protocols was conducted where subjects could either use Google or not. Qualitative analyses was carried out and it was observed how reading strategies were used so that we could compare them when the translator was used. Data analyses show that more strategies are used when participants read with Google and they are able to articulate their knowledge more adequately. It was also verified that lexical access Google translator promotes is beneficial to reading. Yet, the use of Google suggests that there is an approximation of linguistic knowledge between readers at different levels of proficiency. This means that the translator approximates the ones who know more from those who are less proficient. / Esta tese investiga as estrat?gias de leitura na compreens?o leitora de textos acad?micos em Ingl?s como L2/FL quando utilizado ou n?o o Google Tradutor. O estudo fundamenta-se na perspectiva psicolingu?stica de leitura com o foco na pesquisa de leitura em l?ngua estrangeira (CARRELL, 1988; KODA, 2005; GRABE, 2009). Deste ponto de vista, as estrat?gias de leitura s?o discutidas tanto a partir das habilidades mais baixas, tal como o conhecimento lexical ou o parsing, quanto das habilidades mais altas, como a mem?ria ou as infer?ncias. Al?m disso, analisam-se os modelos de leitura, sendo que o modelo interativo (o processamento bottom-up e top-down) de Charles Perfetti chamado de Hip?tese da Qualidade Lexical (1999, 2007) tamb?m serve de fundamenta??o para esta tese. Outra discuss?o que permeia a investiga??o ? a evolu??o da lingu?stica computacional no que tange a ?rea de machine translation. Aqui, analisa-se o Google Tradutor e como ele pode ser tamb?m uma estrat?gia de leitura em L2 para a compreens?o de textos acad?micos. Al?m disso, esta tese busca explorar como o tradutor pode ser utilizado para o ensino/aprendizagem de leitura em ingl?s como L2. Com a finalidade de avaliar se a ferramenta de tradu??o eletr?nica ? ben?fica para a compreens?o leitora, dez estudantes de diversas nacionalidades, de n?vel intermedi?rio em ingl?s do instituto de l?nguas da Universidade de Pittsburgh participaram da pesquisa. Foram aplicados instrumentos utilizando a metodologia de protocolos verbais em que os participantes usavam ou n?o o Google Tradutor. Uma an?lise qualitativa dos protocolos foi realizada, observando-se as estrat?gias de leitura aplicadas e comparando-as quando os participantes utilizavam ou n?o o tradutor. A an?lise dos dados demonstra como s?o aplicadas mais estrat?gias, quando os participantes leem com o Google Tradutor, sendo capazes de articular melhor seus conhecimentos. Tamb?m foi verificado que o acesso lexical que o tradutor oferece ? ben?fico para a leitura. Ainda, o uso do tradutor sugere que h? uma aproxima??o entre os conhecimentos lingu?sticos dos leitores com n?veis diferentes de ingl?s. Isso significa dizer que o Google Tradutor aproxima os leitores que sabem mais daqueles que t?m menos conhecimentos da l?ngua.

Thus, the reading strategies allow "to teach reading," not by decoding words but by recovering the meaning of what is read. The Theory of Argumentation within Language (AWL), by Oswald Ducrot and fellow researches, is a theory in which the meaning is argumentative, built in and through language. In its current phase, Theory of Semantic Blocks (TSB), the semantic relationships are considered, being explaining from argumentative chaining, which are two interdependent segments joined by a connector. As a result, this theory meets this proposal, which is to explain to the reader how language is organized in the production of meaning in speech. For the analyses, proficiency tests of Spanish have been resolved through the usage of reading strategies that are explained from the TSB. With the results, we intend to show that the AWL can contribute to the teaching of reading. / Este trabalho se prop?e explicar que ? poss?vel levar o aluno leitor a reconstruir o sentido do discurso escrito por meio das entidades lingu?sticas oferecidas pela l?ngua, a fim de tornar sua leitura proficiente. Desse modo, as estrat?gias de leitura permitem ?ensinar a ler?, n?o a decodificar palavras, mas a resgatar o sentido do que ? lido. A Teoria da Argumenta??o na L?ngua (ANL), de Oswald Ducrot e colaboradores, ? uma teoria na qual o sentido ? argumentativo, constru?do na e pela l?ngua. Na sua fase mais atual, Teoria dos Blocos Sem?nticos (TBS), considera-se as rela??es sem?nticas explicando-as a partir de encadeamentos argumentativos, que s?o dois segmentos interdependentes ligados por um conector. Em vista disso, essa teoria vem ao encontro dessa proposta que ? explicar ao leitor a forma como a l?ngua se organiza na produ??o de sentido no discurso. Para as an?lises foram resolvidas provas de profici?ncia em l?ngua espanhola utilizando-se de estrat?gias de leitura que s?o explicadas a partir da TBS. Com os resultados obtidos, pretende-se mostrar que a ANL pode contribuir ao ensino de leitura.

The objective is to identify, in a text-base, through a reflective reading, what are the meanings presented by the author that are essentials and which are acessories, establishing a favorable condition for the preparation of the summary. The Argumentation Theory within Language, in particular, in its a theoretical proposal that explains how the meanings is constructed by the relationship among signs and how these signs are related to others, guiding for possible and impossible combinations in the view of the speech. It is believed that it is possible to identify the essentials meanings and the accessories contained in the text, since the meaning consists of argumentative chains, in other words, chains of the meaning. Those meanings that are not continued should not be included in the summary, because they are considered accessories. We further assume that through argumentative links, which are build, it is possible, in a concrete way, to observe how the different meanings presented in a text are related. / O presente trabalho pretende propor formas de constru??o de resumo, com base na Teoria da Argumenta??o na L?ngua (ANL). Objetiva-se identificar, em um texto-base, por meio de uma leitura reflexiva, quais s?o os sentidos apresentados pelo autor que s?o essenciais e quais s?o acess?rios, sentidos esses que estabelecem uma condi??o favor?vel ? elabora??o do resumo. A ANL, em especial, em sua vers?o atual, a Teoria dos Blocos Sem?nticos (TBS), foi escolhida por se tratar de uma proposta te?rica que explica como o sentido ? constru?do pela rela??o entre os signos e como esses signos s?o relacionados com outros, orientando para possibilidades e impossibilidades de combina??es em vista do discurso. Acredita-se que ? poss?vel, por meio de conceitos da ANL/TBS, identificar os sentidos essenciais e acess?rios contidos no texto, uma vez que os sentidos continuados constituem cadeias argumentativas, ou seja, cadeias de sentidos. Aqueles sentidos que n?o s?o continuados n?o devem estar no resumo, porque s?o considerados acess?rios. Supomos, ainda, que por meio dos encadeamentos argumentativos, que s?o constru?dos, ? poss?vel, de forma concreta, observar como os diferentes sentidos apresentados em um texto s?o relacionados.

Little is known, however, about the impact of vitamin D on clinical outcomes in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). In this study, we evaluated the association between vitamin D levels and nutritional status, pulmonary function (PF) and pulmonary exacerbations in children and adolescents with CF. Methods: 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels of 37 children and adolescents were evaluated retrospectively. Pulmonary function data, albumin, body mass index (BMI), height for age (H/A) and pulmonary exacerbations episodes were associated with vitamin D levels divided into two groups: normal (?30ng/ml) and insufficient (<30ng/ml). Results: hypovitaminosis D (25[OH]D <30ng/ml) was observed in 54% of patients. The mean of 25(OH)D was 30,53?12,14ng/ml. Pulmonary function and nutritional status were not associated with vitamin D levels. The number of pulmonary exacerbations over a period of two years (p=0,007) and post-dosing period of 25(OH)D (p=0,002) was significantly higher in patients with hypovitaminosis D. There was a trend of lower 25(OH)D levels during autumn and winter (p=0,067). Conclusion: vitamin D deficiency was associated with higher rates of pulmonary exacerbation in children and adolescents with CF. Vitamin D can be a marker of disease severity or be a significant causal factor for a higher number of pulmonary exacerbations. Prospective studies can help to clarify the causality of this association. / Introdu??o: recentes evid?ncias t?m associado a vitamina D a benef?cios na sa?de pulmonar. Pouco se sabe, entretanto, sobre o impacto da vitamina D em desfechos cl?nicos na popula??o pedi?trica com fibrose c?stica (FC). Neste estudo, avaliamos as associa??es entre os n?veis de vitamina D e o estado nutricional, a fun??o pulmonar (FP) e as exacerba??es pulmonares (EP) em crian?as e adolescentes com FC. M?todos: n?veis de 25-hidroxivitamina D (25[OH]D) de 37 crian?as e adolescentes foram avaliados retrospectivamente. Dados de fun??o pulmonar, albumina, ?ndice de massa corporal (IMC), estatura para idade (E/I) e epis?dios de exacerba??o pulmonar foram associados com n?veis de vitamina D divididos em dois grupos: normal (?30ng/ml) e insuficiente (<30ng/ml). Resultados: a hipovitaminose D (25[OH]D <30ng/ml) foi observada em 54% dos pacientes. A m?dia de 25(OH) D foi 30,53?12,14ng/ml. Fun??o pulmonar e estado nutricional n?o se associaram com os n?veis de vitamina D. O n?mero de exacerba??es pulmonares em um per?odo de dois anos (p=0,007) e no per?odo p?s-dosagem da 25(OH)D (p=0,002) foi significativamente maior em pacientes com hipovitaminose D. Auteure de po?sie, roman, nouvelle et pi?ce de th??tre, son oeuvre est reconnue en France par des nombreux prix litt?raires. Son ?criture po?tique est marqu?e par deux aspects majeurs : la pr?sence dans sa po?sie des traces du multiculturalisme et de la relation interculturelle qui sont influences de sa propre vie, et la pr?sence au sein de sa po?tique de la tendance critique qu?elle met en oeuvre dans sa m?tapo?sie. Int?grant une g?n?ration de po?tes fran?ais tr?s pench?e sur une po?sie critique, sa m?tapo?sie se d?tache encore de celles de ses contemporains par son abondance et par la richesse de ses propos. Tous les livres de la po?te pr?sentent des r?flexions m?tapo?tiques et la plupart affichent des titres r?v?lateurs (Textes pour un po?me, Po?mes pour un texte, Par del? les mots, Territoires du souffle et Rythmes) de la place qu?elle donne ? la critique dans la totalit? de son oeuvre po?tique. Critique qui, par les d?finitions de po?sie, de po?tique d'une mani?re g?n?rale et de sa propre po?tique, peut ?tre compar?e ? la celle de Paul Val?ry et ? celles des po?tes contemporains de langue fran?aise. Chedid est un exemple, alors, de po?te critique, selon la tradition fran?aise d'une critique litt?raire produite par des po?tes. Compte tenu de cette richesse et du grand nombre des m?tapo?mes de l'auteure, il est possible de penser ? la r?union des exemplaires les plus expressifs dans un ensemble constituant l?art po?tique d'Andr?e Chedid. Art po?tique, dans la connotation moderne et contemporaine que ce terme a re?ue ? comme un ensemble illustratif du regard critique du po?te envers l'?criture po?tique. Cette th?se s?ach?ve ainsi avec la proposition de ce qui pour nous serait son art po?tique, y r?alisant notre objectif premier de pr?senter et d?analyser les conceptions de Chedid sur la po?sie, le po?me et la fonction du po?te. / La m?tapo?sie d?Andr?e Chedid et la cr?ation d?un art po?tique contemporain [A metapoesia de Andr?e Chedid e a cria??o de uma arte po?tica contempor?nea] tem como objetivo revelar e analisar a po?tica da escritora franc?fona Andr?e Chedid, dando destaque a seus poemas dedicados ? an?lise da poesia e da cria??o po?tica ? os metapoemas. Autora de poemas, romances, contos e pe?as de teatro, o seu trabalho ? reconhecido na Fran?a por in?meros pr?mios liter?rios. Sua escrita po?tica ? marcada por dois aspectos principais: a presen?a de tra?os do multiculturalismo e da rela??o intercultural que ela estabelece entre as suas ra?zes culturais e a tend?ncia cr?tica presente no seio de sua proposta l?rica ? revelada em sua metapoesia. Mesmo fazendo parte de uma gera??o de poetas franceses extremamente l?cidos quanto ? poesia e ao fazer po?tico, sua metapoesia destaca-se da de seus contempor?neos pela abund?ncia e pela riqueza das reflex?es cr?ticas inseridas nos metapoemas. Todos os livros de Chedid possuem uma quantidade significativa de metapoemas, e suas preocupa??es com quest?es metapo?ticas e metaliter?rias revela-se na escolha dos titulos de quase todos os seus livros (Textes pour un po?me, Po?mes pour un texte, Par del? les mots, Territoires du souffle e Rythmes). Por suas defini??es de poesia, de po?tica de uma maneira geral, e de seu pr?prio fazer po?tico, sua obra metapo?tica pode ser comparada com a cr?tica de Paul Val?ry e a dos poetas contempor?neos de l?ngua francesa. Chedid ?, com isso, um exemplo de poeta cr?tica segundo a tradi??o francesa de uma cr?tica liter?ria escrita por poetas. Dada esta riqueza cr?tica, e os in?meros metapoemas da autora, ? poss?vel pensar na reuni?o dos exemplares mais expressivos em um conjunto que constitui a arte po?tica Chedid. Po?tica ? aqui entendida nas conota??es moderna e contempor?nea que esse termo tem recebido ? como um conjunto ilustrativo dos princ?pios cr?ticos mobilizados pelo autor ao escrever seus poemas. Esta tese se conclui com a proposta do que para n?s seria a sua arte po?tica, alcan?ando o nosso primeiro objetivo nesta tese: apresentar e analisar como Chedid apresenta, na sua l?rica, o poema e a fun??o do poeta.

In order to do that, will be studied the conceptions arising from the referred theory, as well as its conventional roots and theories from another theorists. Along the revision of the pertinent literature will be studies ideas from Ferdinand de Saussure, especially the ones about relation and linguistic values, because they are significant important to understand the linguistic meaning of any terms in the language. Another idea that will be developed at the following paper is the empty sign, studied by Benveniste, which will be explained and will be the object for new considerations, in order to study the presence of an emptiness inside every word. Also during the study of the literature, the ideas of meaning understood only by the linguistic relations among words will be object of thoughts. In order to do that, the ideas of Oswald Ducrot and Marion Carel will be very important, especially the linguistic orientation, linguistic relations, because they will demonstrate how the meaning is constructed. Other notions of those two theoretical authors are the idea of semantic block and argumentative four-sided figure. The paradox, according to the semantics, will be studied considering the ideas of Carel, Ducrot and Borges (2011), aiming its application in the argumentative figure. Specifically, the observation of the paradox in the figure can demonstrate how the normative and transgressive relations occurs. There were select a song and an advertisement to demonstrate those kind of relations, by using a methodology that focus in the particular cases. At the end, the results will be shown and the final considerations will be constructed, based on the premise of analyzing the paradox in the argumentative four-sized figure. / A presente tese estuda o paradoxo, do ponto de vista da Teoria dos Blocos Sem?nticos, observando, fundamentalmente, as rela??es que ocorrem no quadrado argumentativo. Para isso, estudam-se os conceitos da teoria mencionada, bem como seus fundamentos precursores e as ra?zes advindas de outros te?ricos. Ao longo da fundamenta??o te?rica s?o estudados os conceitos de Ferdinand de Saussure, principalmente a no??o de rela??o e valor lingu?stico, pois fundamentais para a constru??o do sentido. Ademais, o conceito de signo vazio de Benveniste ? explicitado e serve de base para novas reflex?es, que observam a ocorr?ncia de uma parte vazia nas palavras. Ainda, dentro dos pressupostos te?ricos, s?o estudadas as no??es iniciais de argumenta??o na l?ngua, atrav?s dos escritos de Oswald Ducrot, visando a obten??o do entendimento necess?rio para uma compreens?o adequada da Teoria dos Blocos Sem?nticos, atualmente desenvolvida por Marion Carel. Dentre os conceitos mais importantes para o estudo em pauta, est?o a orienta??o lingu?stica, as rela??es lingu?sticas, que demonstrar?o como o sentido ? constru?do, bem como a no??o de bloco sem?ntico e quadrado argumentativo. O paradoxo sem?ntico ? abordado com a utiliza??o dos estudos de Carel e Ducrot, e de Borges (2011), mirando sua aplica??o dentro do quadrado argumentativo, ou seja, observa-se o comportamento das rela??es de normatividade e transgressividade entre os encadeamentos do quadrado, derivado de um bloco sem?ntico. O objeto das an?lises consiste em uma can??o nacional e uma propaganda, ambas contendo sentidos paradoxais. A metodologia utilizada ? a an?lise de cada objeto de forma ?nica, com etapas pr?prias. Concluiu-se que o paradoxo constitui aspectos normativos paradoxais, mas n?o aspectos transpostos e conversos.
