This thesis analyzes the process of stereotyping of haitian immigrants in the city of Lajeado, seeking to describe the role of the immigrant as a stranger subject in social relations, being an individual in which performs important functions for a certain context at the same time that it’s bad seen by the local population. To understand this, this thesis presents migratory theories to understand the Haitian Diaspora and how from their historical process, the Haitians sought in immigration, forms of identification and social ascension. Later shown how Brazil has become a gateway for these immigrants, what was the context for this to occur. Entering then, upon their arrival in Brazil, specifying Lajeado’s case. The dilemmas presented by the local population, such as the agreements of the businessmen and the contracting of the Haitians immigrants to the southern region of the country, which caused the estrangement of the established population with the arrival of an unwanted stranger group that suddenly appears in the city. This thesis addresses the conditions that occur for ethnic groups were racialized and dominated by dominant groups. Demonstrating how the case of Haitian immigrants in Lajeado ratifies that in various contexts in which they immigrated they have been a stigmatized and racialized ethnic group. The thesis aims to emphasize how the formation of the stereotype of the Haitian immigrant in the city occurs from two biases, the first is that the Haitians were racialized and the second was their stigmatization by the established local population of Lajeado in their everyday social relations. At first, the local population used existing racial categories about the image they have of the Brazilian black people towards the Haitians, but it was late re-signified through a process of categorization of a new stereotype towards these immigrants. Noting that through a network of gossip of false and exaggerated information about Haitian immigrants were transmitted by the established population of the city. These characteristics of Haitians who corroborated to the formation of their stereotype in the region.

The aim of the study is to examine and analyse how the probation offices in Sweden is working for the reintegration into society for conditionally released prisoners. In the studyreintegration means that the individual, after serving a prison sentence, should return to a non-criminal lifestyle. The factors which can affect the reintegration process is divided into structural, social and individual factors. In the study, six qualitative, semi-structured interviews with probation officers, together with previous research on the subject, form the basis of the study. An important part that is highlighted in the result is that the main purpose of the probation offices is to reduce the risk of relapse in crime, not the individual's reintegration into society. The result is then analysed in relation to the previous research, as well as Bronfenbrenner's system theory, Goldberg’s deviation spiral and Goffman's theory of stigmatization. This is because previous research indicates that people who have been convicted are at high risk of being both labelled and stigmatized. The conclusion drawn in the study is that although the probation officers do not expressly work for individuals' reintegration to society after conditional release, they have many alternatives of both interventions and programs that can promote a successful reintegration process.

Romanies and education : An arena for differentiation, paradoxes and stigmatizationHacker, Jennifer January 2006 (has links)
<p>This thesis analyses how romanies look upon schooling and how they reflect upon the possibility of getting an education. Many inquiries relating to romanies have been published in Sweden but very few are based on fieldwork among romanies. The aim of this thesis is therefore to through fieldwork focus on how romanies themselves look upon their educational situation.</p><p>The main questions for this study are: How is the image of romanies as a problem constructed in school? How are romanies separated from other students? How is the interplay between romanies and school representatives formed? How do romanies look upon the possibility of getting an education and does their perception differ from the usual official apprehension?</p><p>An important conclusion concerns how social workers and teachers continuously categorize romanies as different. The group is constantly differentiated from other ethnic groups and is often the target of integration projects. This leads to a constant stigmatization of the group but also to “weak power”. In certain situations where the ethnic identity may be an advantage the ethnic identity is over communicated while it is under communicated in an inferior situation.</p>

"Där man bor tycker man det är bra" : Barns geografier i en segregerad stadsmiljö / "Where you live you like it" : Children's Geographies in a Segregated Urban Environmentvan der Burgt, Danielle January 2006 (has links)
<p>Because of the socioeconomic and ethnic segregation in many Swedish towns, residents with different social backgrounds are often living in separate neighbourhoods. This thesis focuses on children aged between 11 and 14 and explores the spatial extent of their social networks, their spatial mobility and spatial representations. By studying these aspects of children’s daily lives the study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind neighbourhood effects.</p><p>The spatial extension of the daily lives of children in seven adjacent neighbourhoods in a medium sized Swedish town is mapped. By using children’s activity diaries, surveys with parents and children’s maps the study explores to which extent children with different personal characteristics and from different neighbourhoods have friends outside their own neighbourhoods, where they spend time and what kind of activities they engage in and with whom. The study shows that the possibility to get their own direct experience of other neighbourhoods differs between groups of children, much depending on the geographical extension of their social networks, which in turn appears mainly to be a consequence of school reception areas and, indirectly, school popularity.</p><p>By using children’s maps and group interviews children’s perspectives of their own and other neighbourhoods are analysed. The thesis illustrates how children feel about and discuss their own neighbourhoods and other neighbourhoods in town. The children in the study emphasize their own neighbourhood as a good and quiet neighbourhood, irrespective of the neighbourhood’s character and status. One of the neighbourhoods is stigmatised in the public discourse. Among the children there is a living debate in relation to this neighbourhood. In group interviews the children sometimes confirm, sometimes critically question the rumours about this neighbourhood. The children which live in this neighbourhood are aware of the bad reputation and also act and react upon it</p>

Sjuksköterskors implicita attityder gentemot patienter med missbruksproblem / Nurses’ implicit attitudes towards patients with substance abuse problemsSalman, Mona, Tångerby, Nina January 2011 (has links)
Patients with substance abuse problems occupy much of the bedsand resources of the health care. Therefore, it is important toensure that these patients receive proper care and highlight thefactors that may affect that care. The purpose of this literaturestudy was to illuminate nurses’ attitudes towards patients withsubstance abuse problems and describe the character of themeetings between nurses and these patients. As the basis for thispaper, 17 research articles were used, of them 11 articles werequantitative and six were qualitative. It was found that nurses oftenexhibited negative attitudes towards patients with substance abuseproblems and that this had an impact on the nursing care of thesepatients. Stigmatization, stereotyping and moralization of thesepatients were also detected and this often led to substandard care.Nursing care is characterized by an ethical approach and ahumanistic view that is overlooked if the negative attitudes ofnurses towards patients with substance abuse problems are allowedto affect care. More qualitative research on nurses’ attitudestowards patients with substance abuse problems is prompted.Furthermore, it is required more education in the undergraduatenursing schools and more occupational education at nurses’workplace about nursing care of patients with substance abuseproblems.

A hidden stamping : A qualitative study of the extent to which a foreign-sounding name affects the individual's ability to be called for a work interviewGunnarsson, Johan, Bäckman, Jimmy January 2014 (has links)
The applicants have described that having a job is extremely important to fill out the everyday life with something meaningful and to make a contribution to the society. From previous research and in the daily press, we have seen that in the labor market that it can be a problem if an individual has a foreign name. If you have a Swedish conformed name, it gets easier towards being called to a work interview. This study implied to study individuals with non-Swedish conformed names and their alleged difficulties with having a work interview. To contact the interview persons, help have been handed from the Work Employment Agency in Örebro, Sweden. Six qualitative interviews have been performed; five of these have been with individuals with foreign names, that currently are searching for work and one of these has been with one of the staff at the agency. The interviews have revealed that the name had some significance when it comes to being called to a work interview. A Swedish conformed name outweighs a foreign name in some cases. During the interviews focus was laid on how the applicants described their feelings and experiences of being declined a work interview because of their foreign names. The interviewees pointed out that there may be other attributes that are important; such as culture, education, appearance or language difficulties. Employers will then rather be safe than sorry, therefore, they call those with Swedish conformed names instead of those with foreign names.
