Creating a Verbal Community for Describing Emotional Responses within a Contingency Lens: The Effects of a Brief Training Workshop

Garden, Regan E. 12 1900 (has links)
Observing emotional responses is recognized as a valuable clinical skill in a variety of professions, including applied behavior analysis. Emotional responses can flag possible contingencies thereby guiding a behavior analyst to better select valid measures, goals, and procedures. Additionally, emotional responses can be goals in and of themselves. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a workshop on the observation and description of emotional responses by behavior analysts-in-training. The procedures included instructions, modeling, practice, discussion and feedback. The workshop included a blend of trainer presentation and interteaching strategies. The effects of the workshop were evaluated using a single-subject A-B design with multiple probe measures across four students. During probe assessments participants watched short video clips of family interactions and wrote a descriptive narrative in response to several questions. This created a permanent record for quantitative evaluation and analysis. The study resulted in an increase in the number of descriptions of emotional responses among all participants. The participants also increased responses tying the emotional response to external environmental events more often in the post-workshop assessment than the pre-workshop assessment. Results are discussed within the context of training applied behavior analysts, the analysis of verbal behavior, and the role of emotions in clinical practice.

DET KOMMUNIKATIONSSTÖDJANDE KLASSRUMMET: ANVÄNDANDE AV ETT OBSERVATIONSVERKTYG I SÄRSKOLAN / The communication-supporting classroom:use of an observation tool in a special school

Juhlin, Linda January 2022 (has links)

A Microgenetic Analysis of the Development of Thematic Coherence Between the Topic Sentence and Supporting Ideas in the English Academic Paragraph: A Case Study of a Saudi Female Writer

Kepler, Grady 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis explores the developmental pathway of thematic coherence among one Saudi female student in a foundational second language (L2) writing composition course, contributing to the field of L2 academic writing by offering a rich description of writing development. Despite a rapid increase in enrollment in the past 10 years, students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) remain an understudied L2 learner population. In addition, although a number of studies have explored coherence among L2 learners of English, such research focuses either on the linguistic features utilized by learners to ensure cohesion or on the contrast between L2 learners’ cohesive devices and that of professional standards. To date, no studies offer insight into learners’ developmental trajectory toward greater competency in producing coherent academic paragraphs. The present study proposes an alternative approach by analyzing academic paragraphs in light of the definition of thematic coherence as a general-to-particular structure of ideas, i.e., a flow of information to form a superordinate-subordinate structure in which subordinate ideas support the abstract, overarching assertion. Further, the study uses the methodology of a microgenetic analysis to facilitate the tracing of the history of mediation and micro-changes in the focal learner’s written production over time as it relates to the proposed definition of thematic coherence. Each of the written drafts of paragraphs produced by the focal student is analyzed in sequence. An analysis of qualitative data is presented to contextualize and describe the focal learner’s experience in the instructional context and how this is interconnected to the development of her written paragraphs. The results showed an increase in the student’s ability to produce academic paragraphs with a general-to-particular structure, particularly during mediation that was rich with metalinguistic terminology that also created opportunities to collaboratively construct meanings of such terms. A main contribution to L2 academic writing this study offers is a rich description of a student’s developing skills in producing academic paragraphs. An implication is that to nurture academic writing skills, such as thematic coherence among students from KSA, instruction must be attentive to the developmental stages this student population progresses through.

Blomqvist, Sara, Matilda, Lundblad January 2021 (has links)
Aim: to survey the supportive role of midwives for the pregnant woman in antenatal care during the covid-19 pandemic. Method: quantitative cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a web-based survey and analyzed with descriptive statistics. Result: sixtyfour questionnaires were answered. There has been a sufficient amount of time and information to support pregnant women. Collegial and managerial support were important to support women. Some midwife visits had been replaced with digital care. Parental support in groups was not implemented during covid-19, alternatively implemented digitally. Adverse conditions for women have been more difficult to observe in digital care. Pregnant women could bring one person to the midwife's clinic in exceptional cases, which led to an increased supporting role for the midwives. Pregnant women expressed worry, but still appreciated visits to the midwife clinic during the covid-19 pandemic. The midwives were worried about not meeting the needs of support for pregnant women. Conclusions: the supportive role of midwives has been affected by covid-19. There are divided opinions about whether digital care facilitates maternal care for pregnant women. The midwives states that adequate care has been provided for the pregnant women. Midwives experienced confidence in the supportive role.
