Indigenous planning: process and development of a community housing plan for Swan Lake First Nation

Mbadugha, Marie Cecile Esclanda 28 January 2013 (has links)
This practicum examined Indigenous planning as the theoretical framework and foundation of this project. Literature reviews on First Nations on-reserve housing conditions were examined to understand the struggles Indigenous communities face when it comes to housing. Based on the literature reviews, it was determined that housing has been an issue in many First Nation communities, perpetuating a demand for planning to explore remedies to minimize or eradicate this social concern. From understanding Indigenous planning practices, the practicum explored the Indigenous community of Swan Lake First Nation (SLFN) and the housing challenges they experience. Through planning with SLFN community members to determine methods that would address the housing challenges, the development of a community housing plan was suggested. The process and development of SLFN community housing plan was documented in this practicum.

Improbable circumstances strategic framework

Kennon, Denzil 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Industrial Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH SUMMARY: The research documents the development of a conceptual framework, the improbable circumstances strategic (ICS) framework, which guides organisations in the preparation for improbable circumstances. Four fields include: strategic management, innovation, systems thinking and complexity theories (black swans). The black swan principle was introduced with its applicability to the 2008 economic crisis. The black swan is an event which is retrospective in its predictability, highly improbable and carries extreme impact. There are various principles to cope with black swans which will now play a role in strategic management. Strategic management is studied from a systems thinking perspective which is a school of thought that strategy is a process which an organisation should follow from analysis, synthesis, implementation through to the operation phase. Some tools applicable to the analysis and synthesis phases were studied to give a greater understanding of the current field of strategic management. Innovation is an underlying principle which supports the strategic process. Innovation is a field which is currently not playing a large role in the strategy process. The principles of the innovation life cycle, innovation management and open innovation were studied to support the framework as well as create awareness around the advantages thereof within the field strategy. The dissertation uses aspects of these four fields to form the ICS framework. The framework consists of four phases: the analysis phase; the improbable event creation phase; the fragility analysis phase; and the synthesis phase. The first three phases run parallel with the current analysis phase of strategic management as the ICS framework is not designed to replace the strategic management process, but to add to it. The synthesis phase is where the design of the strategic plan for improbable circumstances takes place. Each phase sets out the inputs, requirements and deliverables needed for the successful implementation of the framework. Some tools for each of the phases are given, but they are given merely as a guideline as different organisations have the infrastructure for different tools. The framework is partially validated by being able to apply various tools to each phase, but the framework’s place in the field of strategy should be validated. The validation is done through interviews with eight industry experts in the four fields of study discussed. The results show a positive response with a call for future study through implementation, a tracking of the framework through this implementation and critical factors that arise from that.

Os dados obtidos subsidiarão a construção de uma escala psicométrica para a compreensão e predição do comportamento em estudo / Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify, by means of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the elements leading to the development of nurses' behavioral intention when performing a hemodynamic study in patients through pulmonary artery catheter (PAC). Data were obtained by using semi-structured interviews made with 23 Intensive Care Unit nurses from two public and one private hospitais in the city of Campinas, São Paulo state, Brazil. The exploratory nature of this study allowed a qualitative sort of analysis of the data collected, which were then presented according to the following Central Theme-based Units: Attitude, Normative, Control and General Beliefs. The analysis of the interviews highlighted that, conceming the Attitude Beliefs, there are positive and negative aftective beliefs regarded to both behavior and to the advantages and disadvantages in carrying out the hemodynamic study. As to the Normative Beliefs Unit it is possible to emphasize some positive social references present in the behavioral response such as the physicians, nurses and patients, as well as some elements proved to stimulate behavior: nurses' responsibility towards the patients' care and interest in the patients' recovery; among the negative references are: the medical staft and continuing education services; regarding the non-stimulating elements we can mention: knowledge deficit, difficulties in carrying out the procedures and low use of the hemodynamic study data by the medical staft. The Control Beliefs displayed some elements which can either facilitate and I or make the behavior difticult: material, equipment, number of professional people, knowledge, time, tasks overload, nurse and medical staft. The data obtained will enable the creation of a psychometric scale which will be used to understand and predict the behavior presently studied. / Mestrado / Enfermagem e Trabalho / Mestre em Enfermagem

Svanencertifiering av flerbostadshus / The Nordic Swan applied to multi-family housing

Larsson, Joakim, Falck, André January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: Today the amount of Eco labelled multi-family houses are increasing. The Nordic Swan is a well-known certification that has grown a lot when it’s comes to certifying multi-family houses in Sweden. Unlike other well-known ecolabels there are not many studies done on the Nordic Swan. By studying the certification, and its establishment, in two large projects the goal of this study is to pinpoint weaknesses in the process of attaining the Nordic Swan and then make improvement proposals.Method: In order to provide improvement proposals, a qualitative study was chosen. A study of literature and a document analysis is the foundation of the study by taking theoretical aspects into account, within the Nordic Swan and multi-family housing. The chosen qualitative method is also based on semi structured interviews. The interview respondents were selected as: two production supervisors, a site manager, a quality and environmental coordinator, a project manager and a project developer. All respondents are working daily with the projects, characterized by the Nordic Swan. The different persons were chosen to obtain a high validity of the study. To further increase the validity and its reliability, respondents were given back the empirical data so that they could make further comments and revisions. Reliability was assured by providing well-designed questions.Findings: The goal refers to improvements with the certification, propelling to new knowledge, within the area of the subject. The empirical investigation shows recurring problems with the product database within the certification, seen from the respondent’s experiences of working with the Nordic Swan in projects. They’ve informed about challenges that comes with respective working process. The certification is solid and gives a qualitative product, but has a time-consuming learning process. Overall, the respondent’s focused on the way of working with the ecolabel and the organisations way of managing the product database, both for an older and a new version. The improvement proposals that results from an analyzation of interviews concerns the communication between the Nordic Swan and its customers, how the Nordic Swan’s product database can improve when future versions releases and how the ecolabel could accomplish a greater eco-impact to the projects by promoting “green innovations”.Limitations: The study is limited to the application of the Nordic Swan in multi-family housing in two large projects. As the guidelines in the process do not differ between companies, the result can be considered general. Retrieving information from even more companies on the other hand could have resulted in a more accurate overall result.Implications: The drawn conclusion from the thesis is that the result creates opportunities for improving the certification process. It can also be used to get more companies to use the Nordic Swan. It provides an opportunity for both companies and individuals to farm an understanding regarding the certification. / Kvarteret Mars, Kolla Parkstad.

Wave resource assessment using numerical wave modelling

Vijay Kumar, Akash January 2020 (has links)
Wave resource assessment is the collection of site-specific meteorological data to estimate the wave potential in a region and is carried out to mitigate the risks involved in the setup of wave energy converters. Wave resource assessment has been typically done using wave buoys. But wave buoys are expensive and require constant maintenance for smooth operation. An alternative to wave buoys is numerical wave modelling. Numerical wave modelling uses mathematical models to generate computer simulations that describe wave parameters in a region. This project is carried out in the region of Hvide Sande, a western port city of Denmark situated in the North Sea. Wave resource assessment is conducted for this region using the SWAN numerical wave model. The data from a wave buoy in the region is used to perform comparative analysis, in order to study the SWAN wave model and to compare the accuracy of the wave data between the measured buoy and the calculated model. The accuracy of the numerical predictions is further quantified by using a correlation coefficient and the relative square root error. This is followed by a scatter diagram for the region to find the most frequent sea states. The corresponding energy flux of the most frequent sea states was found to be in the range of 1-5 kW/m and the highest energy flux for the area is about 40 kW/m for the region.

A Study of the Relationship Between Mean Reversion and a Black Swan Event

Makra, Erik, Snaula, Felix January 2022 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between mean reversion and a black swan event on the Swedish stock market. The data is taken from the Mid Cap and the Large Cap and then compared with the OMXS index. The purpose is to try and find evidence of mean reversion on both lists and if a black swan event will interfere with the mean reverting behaviour. The results we could find was that there is mean reversion on the market for our time period 2005-2022. We could also find evidence of mean reversion during the three black swan events, 2008 financial crisis, Brexit, and Covid-19 pandemic.

Miljöcertifiering av småhus och bostadsrätter : certifikatets ekonomiska värde / Environmental Certification on houses and co-operative apartments : the Certificate's Economical Value

Tamasis, Day-Lee, Kalidis, Efthimios January 2021 (has links)
Sustainable development is an ongoing topic in today's real estate industry. With several roadmaps and global goals that promote a long-term sustainable development, systems for how to adapt buildings to the environment have emerged. Environmental Building and Nordic Swan Ecolabel are two systems developed in Sweden. In order to follow sustainable strategic work, several real estate companies follow the goal for a net zero emission of greenhouse gases by 2045 in the real estate industry. This leads to an increased initiative of sustainable development and adapting existing buildings to the environment. The purpose of the thesis is to carry out a study of how the Swedish environmental certification systems, Environmental Building and Nordic Swan Ecolabel, relate to sustainability work and how these certificates are valued in the property valuation process. In relation to the certifications, the study will investigate the valuation process to examine whether the certificate has an economic value and analyze the connection between environmental certification and market value. Results of this survey suggest that homes that are environmentally certified do not show a clear economic value in relation to the market value. However, it is noted that the fee paid on these condominiums is significantly lower than the conventional condominiums. A result of this shows that the environmental and sustainability attributes that exist in these homes result in a lower fee in comparison with the non-environmentally certified condominiums. The single-family homes do not show an increase in market value for houses with a Nordic Swan Ecolabel.  The conclusion drawn in this study is that the valuation of both a condominium and a single-family home, whether these homes are environmentally certified or not, is difficult to assess whether there is a clear correlation between the certification and the market value.

Wave modeling at the mouth of the Columbia River

Kassem, Sarah 05 September 2012 (has links)
As the second largest river in the U.S., the entrance to the Columbia River is home to some of the most extreme wave conditions on the Pacific Coast. Winter storms commonly generate waves 6-8 m in height, which in combination with strong tidal currents, can produce dangerous navigation conditions. To improve understanding of the wave dynamics in this complex setting, the SWAN model is applied; 2 hindcasts are conducted and an operations forecast is developed. The model is forced with offshore wave heights obtained from a buoy located in 134 m water depth (for the hindcasts) and a specialized WaveWatchIII forecast (for the forecast). In both cases tidal currents are obtained from SELFE, a circulation model of the Columbia River. The hindcasts are validated through measurements obtained from an inshore buoy located in 25 m water depth, a 4-week field experiment and remote sensing methods. The model performs best at the location of the buoy, with a normalized root-mean-squared error (NRMSE) of 11%, primarily because it is outside the area of strong tidal currents. Within the river mouth, the model is able to predict the changes in the wave field due to currents, but its performance is limited by errors in velocity estimates and strong shears in the tidal current profile. From the modeling work, it is evident that wave transformations at the mouth of the river are dominated by the tidal currents. The forecast has been operational since August 2011 and provides 45-hours of predictive wave information. In comparison with measured wave heights at the buoy, the forecast performs well, with a NRMSE of 16%. The majority of errors are caused by errors in the input conditions, since they themselves are forecasted. Additional errors arise from phase-resolved properties in the wave field that the model is unable to produce; these errors are also present in the hindcasts. Despite the limitations, this forecast provides valuable information to bar pilots since it includes the effects of the tidal currents. / Graduation date: 2013
