Culture in Focus : A Critical Study of Culture in the English Syllabi and a Few Selected Textbooks

Siméus, Jenny January 2007 (has links)
<p>This paper examines how aesthetic and anthropologic culture is represented in a few selected textbooks for English and to what degree these representations correspond to the aims of the English course syllabi. Regarding aesthetic culture, the emphasis in the syllabi is on the students using literature as means to an end, mainly to develop certain skills such as an understanding of the English language, or learning about anthropologic culture through aesthetic culture. The aesthetic values of literature as an art form are not promoted or encouraged at all. The selected textbooks correspond to the syllabi on this matter. Concerning anthropologic culture, the emphasis in the syllabi is on ‘difference’. Other cultures are presented as strange and distant from us, and this is something that also can be seen in the selected textbooks. Moreover, in one of the textbooks the students are addressed as future tourists, potentially causing them to view other cultures and places as sights to see and sites to visit, instead of as having intrinsic value.</p>

Mattsson, Sophie January 2006 (has links)
<p>In this essay, I intent to examine history as a school subject in Swedish compulsory school (for children aged 7-16), it contains mostly an analysis of the syllabus for history in the three latest curriculums Lgr 69, Lgr 80 and Lpo 94. The main purpose of the essay is to illuminate the development and the change history as a subject has gone through during this specific time, and my will is also to illustrate the view on knowledge and learning that is revealed in the syllabus for history in today’s curriculum (Lpo 94).</p><p>The survey shows that in Swedish compulsory school, history as a subject has changed significantly. During the examined years, the contents have been exceptionally broadened and that has lead to increasing demands on the students as it has gone from being directed to the individual and its contiguous history with shorter outlooks on the rest of the world, to requiring the individual to be able to see and understand other parts of the world and different time, on the basis of it’s own history and culture. According to my survey, this has lead to problems in the students learning ability. The curriculum as it is presented today demands a deeper kind of knowledge than one can expect from all students since far from all have the capacity to reach this sort of deeper knowledge.</p> / <p>Den här uppsatsen handlar om skolämnet historia för grundskolan och innefattar framförallt en analys av kursplanerna för historia i Lgr 69, Lgr 80 och Lpo 94.

Svensson, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)
Grading and assessment always brings a vivid discussion in the organization of school. New curriculums and syllabuses develop and it’s up to the teachers to improve their knowledge about it and follow the guidelines to reach justice in their assessment. The purpose with this study was to research how teachers in P.E. in the Swedish “gymnasieskola” in the southern part of Sweden are working with grading and assessment, their apprehension of it and the teachers’ perception of the latest syllabus in P.E. (Gy11). The research included eight deeply going interviews with eight different teachers in P.E. from “gymnasieskolor” in southern part of Sweden. The results showed that the colleagues in schools don’t cooperate very well when it comes to grading and assessment. But the teachers work equal with assessment during and after the lessons. It was important that the lessons were based on the syllabus, according to the teachers. Even though, several of them didn’t have an obvious teaching with assessment. There is a lack of conformity due to the teachers’ opinion of the status of the subject. Some of the teachers thought that it was enough with a pass or no pass for the class. Some teachers think that the students should be included in the interpret process, while some teachers thought that they should be excluded. The study shows that there’s disunion in the teaching-staff when it comes to knowledge qualifications and its space in teaching. Frequently recurring in the teachers answers were the difficulty to find time.

WTF is #Modelminoritymutiny?: Solidarity, Embodiment, and Practice in Subverting Ascribed Asian American Racial Positioning

Ng, Pamela 01 January 2016 (has links)
In 2014, in the wake of #BlackLivesMatter, a call to action was made for Asian Americans to actively engage with and unlearn the age old model minority myth and join the movement for racial justice. This thesis seeks to understand and complicate what it means to subvert this ideology in the way of #modelminoritymutiny. It is divided into three primary sections: first, a theoretical framework and of the model minority myth throughout time as a tool for positioning Asian Americans; second, an application of this framework into the recent Peter Liang and Akai Gurley case this past year; and third, a course syllabus for an Asian American studies course here at the Claremont Colleges. This trajectory showcases what it means for Asian Americans to actively resist ascribed narratives, and to propose methods for learning and unlearning.

Overå, Christina January 2016 (has links)

Come On In, The Writing's Fine: Preserving Voice and Generating Enthusiasm in My English 100 Syllabus

Berry, Elisa Leah 01 October 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the potential for creating a composition syllabus that presents a model of good writing, is an enthusiastic invitation to the discipline, and provides a clear roadmap to success, not only for the course, but also for the students’ college career. This is especially useful for an increasingly diverse student community that arrives to college with a varying knowledge of the academic institution, with its specialized language and systems. The project explores the existing research on syllabus crafting, uses current composition studies and a survey of English 100 students to interrogate the rhetorical situation of the author’s own syllabus, and finally reflects upon a section-bysection revision of that syllabus. With a present and positive voice from the teacher that includes students in the process of their own learning, a dynamic composition syllabus can initiate trusting relationships in the classroom, and support greater success for the students.

A Two Semester Life Science Syllabus for Use in Texas Public Schools with Seventh Grade Students

Edwards, Gail G. (Gail Graham) 05 1900 (has links)
The problem of using a state adopted textbook written to apply to a large body of students with varying interests and needs was overcome by using a detailed syllabus that arranged course content in a meaningful sequence that appealed to student interest. The outlined syllabus prepared a two semester life science curriculum to be used by the teacher to guide lesson planning. Both semesters were divided into three units each. Materials included in the syllabus were given to actual student groups in real classroom settings. Since hands on learning was an important part of classroom instruction, two laboratory sections were included in the appendices to be used with the syllabus.

The Need, Feasibility, and Means of Establishing a Speech Center

Irvin, Julie Carter 01 January 2005 (has links)
According to Tom Shachtman, "the speech of too few people achieves eloquence, and that of the vast majority does not even reach a tolerable level of articulate behavior" (5). Articulate behavior has not always been a rare characteristic; from antiquity through the mid-twentieth century, the study of rhetoric was privileged and considered necessary for a well-rounded education. If today's society is inarticulate, then how can eloquence and articulateness be reintroduced as staples of a successful person in today's society? The answer is easy - through the study of rhetoric. After examining the study of rhetoric from antiquity to the present, I will demonstrate the need for a strong rhetorical education, both Writing Across the Curriculum and Speaking Across the Curriculum (through a Speech Center) programs, a dialogic peer/tutor relationship, and a Speech Center that fits the needs of a university, in order to reverse the downward spiral of eloquence in speech.

General Biology Lecture and Laboratory Curriculum Outline in a Two or Four-Year College

Moreland, Amy L. 08 1900 (has links)
In July of 1999, I wrote to 24 Texas junior and community colleges (and one four-year institution) describing my thesis agenda of a general biology lecture and laboratory syllabus for introductory biology students. I requested the titles and authors of the general biology textbooks and laboratory manuals they were currently using, the publishers of these texts, and the edition of said texts. I then contacted publishers of the various textbooks who, in turn, directed me to the Dallas-area representatives for further inquiries. I assimilated the various authors' general biology topics into a two-semester syllabus of lecture and one semester of laboratory. The document is not a text manuscript, but an all-inclusive listing of a general biology syllabus broken down by subject.
