No presente estudo, propomos o exame do problema da função simbólica nos primeiros trabalhos de Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Mais especificamente, trata-se de abordar a posição do problema n\' \"A estrutura do comportamento\", obra publicada em 1942, e sua retomada crítica na \"Fenomenologia da percepção\", publicada em 1945. Esse tema, pouco explicitado pelo filósofo, é também objeto de raros debates entre seus comentadores. Em seu primeiro trabalho, Merleau-Ponty, apropriando-se da semântica do símbolo advinda da neuropsiquiatria do início do século XX, caracterizara o nível de organização da corporalidade humana a partir da sua capacidade de ultrapassar o caráter imediato das situações vividas. A atitude categorial, ou simbólica, aparecia, então, como uma nova significação do comportamento, tendo em vista as formas sincrética e amovível do comportamento encontradas na escala zoológica. A atividade humana investiria o meio de virtualidade e, assim, redimensionaria a existência concreta que se denota no comportamento animal. Nos capítulos da \"Fenomenologia da percepção\" em que Merleau-Ponty trata da espacialidade, da motricidade e da expressividade do corpo próprio, do mesmo modo que o autor prescinde das explicações causais dos fenômenos patológicos utilizados à guisa de material de discussão, ele prescinde das explicações calcadas na função simbólica, doravante associadas a análises de cunho intelectualista. O filósofo combate, tanto na neuropsiquiatria representada especialmente por Gelb e Goldstein quanto na filosofia de Cassirer, o que considera representar uma autonomia crescente da ideação simbólica na dinâmica entre conteúdo e forma. Ao mesmo tempo, Merleau-Ponty nos faz ver que, nessa neuropsiquiatria e nessa filosofia do símbolo, é possível apreender análises fenomenológicas acerca da expressividade motora, gesticular e linguageira do corpo próprio. Tais análises revelam, nele, uma forma de saber que não se reduz nem à ordem do em si nem à ordem do para si, delineando, portanto, a noção de intencionalidade que interessa ao filósofo desenvolver, fundada na unidade sinérgica do corpo próprio. Daí a importância que um outro dispositivo teórico-antropológico adquire ao longo da \"Fenomenologia da percepção\": a noção de esquema corporal. / In this study, we aim to investigate the problem of the symbolic function in Maurice Merleau-Ponty\'s first works. More specifically, we address the position of that problem in \"The Structure of Behavior\", published in 1942, and its critical review in the \"Phenomenology of perception\", published in 1945. This theme, on which the philosopher provided few specifications, is also a source of rare debates among his commentators. In his first work, Merleau-Ponty, using the semantics of the symbol from early 20th-century neuropsychiatry, characterizes the organizational level of human corporality based on its ability to go beyond the immediate nature of the experienced situations. The categorial or symbolic attitude seemed to be a new signification of behavior, in view of the synchretic and movable forms of behavior found on the zoological scale. Human activity would imbue the environment with virtuality and, thus, redimension the concrete existence denoted in animal behavior. In those chapters of the \"Phenomenology of perception\" in which Merleau-Ponty discusses the spatiality, motricity and expressiveness of the own body, in the same way as the author does without the causal explanations of the pathological phenomena used as discussion material, he dispenses with the explanations traced in the symbolic function, hereafter associated with intellectualist analyses. The philosopher combats, both in the neuropsychiatry particularly represented by Gelb and Goldstein and in Cassirer\'s philosophy, what he considers to represent a growing autonomy of the symbolic idea in the dynamics between content and form. At the same time, Merleau-Ponty makes us see that, in this neuropsychiatry and philosophy of the symbol, phenomenological analyses can be apprehended about motor, gesture and language expressions of the own body. These analyses reveal a form of knowing that is reduced neither to the order of in itself nor to the order of for itself, thus outlining the notion of intentionality which the philosopher wants to develop, based on the synergical unit of the own body. This explains the importance another theoretical-anthropological device gains in the \"Phenomenology of perception\": the notion of body schema.

Foi realizado um estudo de caso, entre o período de maio de 2005 e março de 2006, com um participante de cinco anos de idade (GIL), cujos objetivos delineados foram: propiciar a manifestação das condutas de representação da criança; verificar quais condutas de representação são manifestadas pela criança; classificar e analisar as condutas de representação quanto à estrutura e o tipo de representação; realizar a avaliação do desenvolvimento cognitivo e afetivo e realizar intervenções visando favorecer o desencadeamento do processo de equilibração cognitiva e o desenvolvimento afetivo da criança. Quanto aos resultados obtidos, observou-se que o material diversificado, utilizado no ambiente de atendimento, propiciou a manifestação das condutas de representação, as quais ocorreram por meio do jogo simbólico, linguagem e desenho. As representações estruturaram-se por meio de temáticas e uso de materiais que respeitaram certa regularidade, além de se manifestaram por meio de idéias ordenadas e coerentes, que indicam uma organização simbólica. Quanto à avaliação cognitiva, GIL demonstrou possuir as noções de espaço, tempo e causalidade condizentes com o estágio de desenvolvimento em que se encontra. Na avaliação afetiva, verificou-se que os estados afetivos de GIL, quanto aos acontecimentos de sua vida, transpareceram por meio das condutas de representação, ao extravasar seus sentimentos e, ao mesmo tempo, ao demonstrar sua motivação, curiosidade e criatividade. Em relação às intervenções, verificou-se que as mesmas favoreceram o desencadeamento do processo de equilibração cognitiva e o desenvolvimento afetivo de GIL. Isso pode ser observado nos resultados obtidos nas provas piagetianas de diagnóstico do comportamento operatório e em avaliações elaboradas pelos pais e pela escola de GIL / Abstract: Based on Jean Piaget¿s theory, this work is focused on the use of the representation conducts of the symbolic function, which a child presents in his or her preoperational stage of development, as a means to evaluate and to intervene in infants psycho-pedagogical consulting. A case study with a five years old child (hereby called GIL) was conducted between March 2005 and March 2006. The pursued objectives were: to facilitate the occurrence of the child representation conducts; to verify which representation conducts were presented by him or her; to classify and to analyze the representation conducts regarding to their structure and type of representation; to evaluate the child affective and cognitive development; and to intervene aiming at facilitating the cognitive equilibration process and the affective development arousing. Regarding to the obtained results, it could be noted that the varied material used in the attendance environment allowed the occurrence of the representation conducts, which occurred through symbolic games, language, and drawing. The presented representations were structured through themes and through the use of materials which kept a certain regularity, besides through ordered and coherent ideas, which pointed out a symbolic organization. Regarding to the cognitive evaluation, GIL organized his representations from time, space, and causality notions, presenting results which are consistent with his development stage. Concerning to GIL affective evaluation, the affective states linked to his life events were shown through the representation conducts, when demonstrating his feelings and, at the same time, when presenting motivation, curiosity, and creativity. Concerning to interventions, they facilitated GIL cognitive equilibration process and his affective development. Orientador: Elieuza Aparecida de Lima / Resumo: O objetivo da pesquisa dirigiu-se a desvelar os indícios que possam explicar a natureza e o desenvolvimento da função simbólica da consciência na criança pré-escolar durante a atividade da brincadeira de papéis sociais. O problema gerador da investigação foi compreender como acontece o desenvolvimento do processo de significação dos atos simbólicos culturais, pela criança, na atividade da brincadeira de papéis sociais. Os estudos basearam-se na premissa de que a compreensão sobre o funcionamento do processo de significação das vivências e da criação de sentidos e significados sobre a realidade objetiva na idade pré-escolar é possível por meio da observação dos indícios materializados nas ações e palavras das crianças emergidas na brincadeira de papéis sociais, por expressarem a relação existente entre o signo, o significado e o sentido como sendo unidades constituintes da consciência semiótica. A análise desse processo permitiu avançar nas discussões sobre o processo de humanização da criança, especialmente quanto à formação das aptidões, necessidades, capacidades e valorações, entendidas como sendo habilidades especificamente humanas que compõem a personalidade e a inteligência. The problem that generated the investigation was to understand how the development of the process of signification of cultural symbolic acts by the child happens in the activity of playing social roles. The studies were based on the premise that understanding about the functioning of the process of meaning of experiences and the creation of meanings about objective reality at preschool age is possible through the observation of the evidence materialized in the actions and words of the children. children emerged in the play of social roles, for expressing the relationship between the sign, the meaning and the sense as constituting units of semiotic consciousness. The analysis of this process allowed us to advance the discussions about the process of humanization of children, especially regarding the formation of skills, needs, abilities and valuations, understood as being specifically human skills that make up personality and intelligence. This work in two parts – entitled Symbolic Function and Meaning: An Investigation of the Species-Specific Essence of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy – could be characterized as an interpretation of the above-mentioned therapy and the meaning of its particular experience. In the first part, besides a licentiate thesis, four topics are examined: the therapeutic framework, the transference – especially in neurotic form – and its interpretation, psychotherapy with borderline patients, and therapy with psychotics. This has been done by combining studies of literature with analyses of the transference meaning of a number of illuminative clinical examples or vignettes – anecdotes, i.e. narratives with a significant point – the main part of which are the outcome of the author’s own activity in the form of participant observation as a psychotherapist. The general conclusion is that promoting the symbolic function is the essential ingredient in the psychoanalytic form of therapy – its very rationality – and how it effectuates its unique therapeutic potentiality; a characterization which, despite obvious differences in the adequacy of symbolic functioning, is valid irrespective of whether the patient is diagnosed as neurotic, borderline or psychotic. In the second part – essentially of a theoretical nature in contrast to the preceding one – the study is influenced by philosophical hermeneutics, and in this process assimilates its particular conceptuality. The continued analysis of the research object shows that it is misleading, in view of its ontology, to conceptualize it in medical terms as treatment. Aimed at promoting the symbolic function by the transference being interpreted, psychoanalytic psychotherapy instead operates in an ethical dimension and is rather what Aristotle terms a praxis, on the one hand; on the other hand, it is moreover implicitly human science action research into intersubjective appropriation of meaning. In this latter respect, the investigation highlights the fact that the very special interview method in the form of free associations, with their reflexivity, gives the psychoanalytic form of psychotherapy the potential to be not only a qualitative research method but also simultaneously metaresearch. The analyses of the transference meaning of clinical anecdotes in the first part have thereby been able to be methodologically clarified retroactively as psychoanalytic metaresearch.

Partant de l’observation et de l’étude expérimentale (réalisée en Master 2) de situations de maladie d’Alzheimer débutante avec association d’une amnésie hippocampique, d’une anomie et d’une apraxie constructive pour l’espace projectif (syndrome S3A), nous proposons que la cooccurrence des troubles cognitifs et psychopathologiques peut être liée à une rigidification de la fonction symbolique, à savoir la réduction de l’empan de substitution d’un signifié par des signifiants. Nous examinons cette hypothèse à propos des troubles cognitifs en partant de la définition de la fonction symbolique (ou sémiotique) par Piaget. Nous l’étendons aux aspects psychopathologiques en partant de la symbolisation et de ses transformations. La notion de distance symbolique est évoquée à titre de dénominateur commun à tous ces processus, cible de la rigidification de la fonction symbolique. Elle pourrait être liée aux perturbations de la mémoire de travail, entraînant :_ Proactivement, une déstructuration des éléments attributionnels dans le réseau sémantique élargi, contribuant à la genèse des troubles cognitifs._ Rétroactivement, du fait de l’érosion des mécanismes secondaires, l’activation de phénomènes archaïques - dont l’angoisse de non représentation – et des défenses attenantes. Quelques implications psychothérapiques sont envisagées. / Starting from the observation and experimental study of Alzheimer's disease early situations with association of hippocampal amnesia, anomia and constructive apraxia for projective space (S3A syndrome), we propose that the co-occurrence of cognitive and psychopathological disorders may be linked to a stiffening of the symbolic function, namely the reduction of the span of substitution of a signified item by signifiers. We examine this hypothesis about the cognitive impairment on the basis of the symbolic function as defined by Piaget. We extend it to psychopathological aspects starting with the symbolization and its transformations. The concept of symbolic distance is mentioned as a common denominator for all these processes, as a target for the stiffening of the symbolic function. It could be related to working memory impairment, causing:_ Proactively, a destructuration of atributional elements in the “broad semantic network”, contributing to the genesis of cognitive impairment._ Retroactively, because of the erosion of secondary mechanisms, an activation of archaic phenomena - including the anxiety of non-representation - and of the archaic defenses.Some psychotherapeutic implications are considered.

Développée à partir d’un corpus documentaire de plus de 200 représentations iconographiques réparties entre le IXe et le XVe siècle, cette thèse s’appuie aussi sur des sources musicales en latin et des éléments pris dans la littérature profane médiévale en langues vernaculaires. Ce travail de recherche est réuni et organisé dans une base de données qui s’articule à la thèse tout au long de l’argumentation. La description de ce corpus et de la création de cet outil forme la première partie de cette thèse. Une deuxième partie, consacrée à l’étude organologique physique des instruments, vise à proposer un discours objectif sur la nature de l’instrument et de ses éléments constitutifs : formes, cordes, chevilles, chevalets, modes de jeux, tenues etc. Cette partie se termine par un exercice de reconstitution organologique. Une troisième partie étudie l’image sociale et symbolique des instruments en essayant d’englober l’ensemble des discours associés aux cithares planche autour de la notion de translatio propre à la littérature médiévale, que l’on nommera alors translatio musicae. L’ensemble du travail réalisé permettra de former en conclusion une proposition de classification instrumentale propre aux cithares planche médiévales, qui pourra être éventuellement adaptée à l’étude d’autres instruments de musique. / Developed from a corpus of over 200 iconographical sources divided between the 9th and the 15th century, this thesis also draws on Latin sources in and musical elements taken from the medieval secular literature written in vernacular languages. This research is compiled and organized inside a database articulated to the thesis throughout the argument. The description of this documentary corpus and the creation of this specific tool are given in the first part of this dissertation. A second part, devoted to the study of physical characteristics of these instruments, aims to provide an objective discourse on the nature of the instrument and its components: forms, strings, pins, holding manners, playing modes, etc. This part ends with an instrumental reconstitution exercise. A third part examines the social image and symbolic image of the instruments trying to encompass all speech – both literary and visual – related to the board zithers around the medieval notion of translatio, which will be in this particular case called translatio musicae. This work will conclude with a proposition of a specific organological classification for medieval board zithers, which might possibly be adapted to the study of other musical instruments.
