Bracing for Impact : An Exploration into the Impact Startup PhenomenonMalloy Grave, Caitlin, Kronvall Nino de Guzman, Rebecca January 2023 (has links)
The recently coined term, Impact Startup, and its rising popularity on the global scene proves its importance as a subject of research. As startups are considered key players in changing the status quo and breaking barriers, they are considered crucial in overcoming some of the most evident issues of today. Utilizing an approach based on previously validated content analysis methods, this study aims to shine a light on the relatively unexplored topic by identifying the key qualities of Impact Startups. Looking into how these organizations communicate about themselves and comparing the findings with the compiled theoretical definition of Impact Startups, we can evaluate the alignment of theory with practice and gain a deeper understanding of the trending phenomenon. Finding that Impact Startups should effectively change the social and/or environmental status quo we conclude that they should be categorized as, Social Impact Startups, Environmental Startups, and Total Impact Startups. Further results of this investigation highlight the importance of distinguishing between Mature Impact Organizations and Impact Startups. This study contributes extensively to the understanding we have of Impact Startups and lays the foundation for further research and establishing legitimate qualifications of Impact.

New trends in environmental and socially responsible management in the cement manufacturing.Verma, Mangleshwar N. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the environmental and social responsibilities being increasingly shouldered by cement manufacturing sector and outlines a new approach for these companies to accept their responsibilities and to utilise professional approaches to address the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable business. Managing these three dimensions in business translates corporate responsibility into an integrated responsibility for doing business profitably, ethically and in sustainable manner. This three-pronged approach is sometimes called the Triple Bottom Line. It helps companies to fulfil their more holistic Corporate Social Responsibility. A critical review of the literature led the thesis author to develop the theoretical framework for environmental and social reporting to proceed on TBL/CSR journey within the cement industry. Data were collected from TBL/CSR reports from cement companies on key environmental and social performances. Based upon those data, a questionnaire was developed to obtain more information from the leading worldwide cement companies. The combined results of the responses to the questionnaire and the quantitative data derived from the TBL/CSR reports were used to establish best practice benchmarks to serve as performance targets for the author¿s case study company, Oman Cement Company (OCC).
The contribution to knowledge of this research is the summarisation and prioritisation of the cement industry¿s implementation of TBL/CSR management systems, which integrate the elements of TBL/CSR into their strategic plans and daily operational procedures. Guidelines were derived from the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact and the new ISO 26000 standard, which promotes a new way of working towards innovation, value creation and incremental actions for transforming businesses to become more responsible.
The contributions to practice of this research are the practical and procedural insights, gained by quantitative analysis of environmental and social indicators, into how cement companies are making improvements in their processes and products in response to climate change, economic, governmental regulations and social pressures for improvement. Based upon the findings, recommendations and timetables were developed and are being implemented within the OCC as it progresses on its TBL/CSR journey.

The Effect of Vocabulary Acquisition on L2 Student’s Communicative Competence Through Task-based Learning / Effekten av vokabulärsprogression på elevers kommunikativa utveckling med användning av uppgiftsbaserad utbildningMohammad Ali, Hussein, Fredriksson, Marcus January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Task-Based Language Teaching has long been a method for education in different subjects. This study investigates the use of Task-Based Language teaching regarding vocabulary acquisition in English upper secondary/high school students. Through the use of a database, multiple scientific studies and research papers on vocabulary acquisition through TBLT have been included. This study contains the results of the use of TBL through similar teaching methods with the focus on vocabulary development in the L2 classroom. The findings show that studies have different results regarding what tasks to include but present a similar conclusion regarding what method to use; TBLT. The results also show that regardless of what task is used, communication could be beneficial and even played a big role in multiple studies where it increased students vocabulary acquisition. The conclusion of our study suggests that TBLT is an efficient method for developing vocabulary acquisition in upper secondary and high school students. All research papers analysed concluded that TBL and TBLT can be used as means for motivating students which aided the task engagement, thus helping develop their vocabulary acquisition.

Development of the Beam Position Monitors for the Diagnostics of the Test Beam Line in the CTF3 at CERNGarcía Garrigós, Juan José 05 December 2013 (has links)
The work for this thesis is in line with the field of Instrumentation for Particle Accelerators,
so called Beam Diagnostics. It is presented the development of a series of
electro-mechanical devices called Inductive Pick-Ups (IPU) for Beam Position Monitoring
(BPM). A full set of 17 BPM units (16 + 1 spare), named BPS units, were built and
installed into the Test Beam Line (TBL), an electron beam decelerator, of the 3rd CLIC
Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN ¿European Organization for the Nuclear Research¿.
The CTF3, built at CERN by an international collaboration, was meant to demonstrate
the technical feasibility of the key concepts for CLIC ¿Compact Linear Collider¿ as a
future linear collider based on the novel two-beam acceleration scheme, and in order to
achieve the next energy frontier for a lepton collider in theMulti-TeV scale. Modern particle
accelerators and in particular future colliders like CLIC requires an extreme alignment
and stabilization of the beam in order to enhance its quality, which rely heavily on a beam
based alignment techniques. Here the BPMs, like the BPS-IPU, play an important role
providing the beam position with precision and high resolution, besides a beam current
measurement in the case of the BPS, along the beam lines.
The BPS project carried out at IFIC was mainly developed in two phases: prototyping
and series production and test for the TBL.
In the first project phase two fully functional BPS prototypes were constructed, focusing
in this thesis work on the electronic design of the BPS on-board PCBs (Printed Circuit
Boards) which are based on transformers for the current sensing and beam position measurement.
Furthermore, it is described the monitor mechanical design with emphasis on
all the parts directly involved in its electromagnetic functioning, as a result of the coupling
of the EM fields generated by the beam with those parts. For that, it was studied
its operational parameters, according the TBL specifications, and it was also simulated a
new circuital model reproducing the BPS monitor frequency response for its operational
bandwidth (1kHz-100MHz). These prototypes were initially tested in the laboratories of
the BI-PI section¿Beam Instrumentation - Position and Intensity¿ at CERN.
In the second project phase the BPS monitor series, which were built based on the experience
acquired during the prototyping phase, the work was focused on the realization of
the characterization tests to measure the main operational parameters of each series monitor,
for which it was designed and constructed two test benches with different purposes
and frequency regions. The first one is designed to work in the low frequency region,
between 1kHz-100MHz, in the time scale of the electron beam pulse with a repetition
period of 1s and an approximate duration of 140ns. This kind of test setups called Wire
Test-bench are commonly used in the accelerators instrumentation field in order to determine
the characteristic parameters of a BPM (or pick-up) like its linearity and precision
in the position measurement, and also its frequency response (bandwidth). This is done
by emulating a low current intensity beam with a stretched wire carrying a current signals which can be precisely positioned with respect the device under test. This test bench was
specifically made for the BPS monitor and conceived to perform the measurement data
acquisition in an automated way, managing the measurement equipment and the wire positioning
motors controller from a PC workstation. Each one of the BPS monitors series
were characterized by using this system at the IFIC labs, and the test results and analysis
are presented in this work.
On the other hand, the high frequency tests, above the X band in the microwave spectrum
and at the time scale of the micro-bunch pulses with a bunching period of 83ps
(12GHz) inside a long 140ns pulse, were performed in order to measure the longitudinal
impedance of the BPS monitor. This must be low enough in order to minimize the
perturbations on the beam produced at crossing the monitor, which affects to its stability
during the propagation along the line. For that, it was built the high frequency test bench
as a coaxial waveguide structure of 24mm diameter matched at 50¿ and with a bandwidth
from 18MHz to 30GHz, which was previously simulated, and having room in the
middle to place the BPS as the device under test. This high frequency test bench is able
to reproduce the TEM (Transversal Electro-Magnetic) propagative modes corresponding
to an ultra-relativistic electron beam of 12GHz bunching frequency, so that the Scattering
parameters can be measured to obtain the longitudinal impedance of the BPS in the
frequency range of interest.
Finally, it is also presented the results of the beam test made in the TBL line, with
beam currents from 3.5A to 13A (max. available at the moment of the test). In order
to determine the minimum resolution attainable by a BPS monitor in the measurement
of the beam position, being the device figure of merit, with a resolution goal of 5¿m at
maximum beam current of 28A according to the TBL specifications. / García Garrigós, JJ. (2013). Development of the Beam Position Monitors for the Diagnostics of the Test Beam Line in the CTF3 at CERN [Tesis doctoral]. Universitat Politècnica de València. https://doi.org/10.4995/Thesis/10251/34327

Beam position monitoring in the clic drive beam decelerator using stripline technologyBenot Morell, Alfonso 16 May 2016 (has links)
[EN] The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an electron-positron collider conceived for the study of High-Energy Physics in the TeV center of mass energy region, is based on a two-beam operation principle: instead of using active elements (klystrons), the necessary RF power to accelerate the Main Beam (MB) is obtained from the deceleration of a high-current, moderate energy Drive Beam (DB) in the so-called Power Extraction and Transfer Structures (PETS). These structures emit an RF signal of about 130 MW power at 12 GHz. As this frequency is above the cut-o ff frequency of the fundamental mode for the specified beam pipe dimensions (7.6 GHz), the inference propagates from the PETS to the neighboring devices, including the Beam Position Monitors (BPM).
According to the CLIC Conceptual Design Report (CDR), an ef ficient beam position monitoring system for the CLIC DB decelerator needs to meet the following requirements:
- It should be as simple and economic as possible, as 41580 units are required, amounting to 75% of all CLIC BPMs.
- The signal processing scheme should not be a ffected by the PETS interference. This rules out processing the signals at the beam bunching frequency (12 GHz).
- The resulting position signal should detect changes in the beam position whose duration is 10 ns or longer.
- The required spatial resolution is 2 um for a 23 mm diameter vacuum pipe.
- Wide dynamic range: the electronic acquisition system must be able to process signals with extreme levels, induced by either very high (100 A) or very low (3 A) current beams.
This PhD thesis describes the electromagnetic and mechanical design of the first prototype BPM developed for the CLIC Drive Beam and its characterization tests in laboratory and with beam. The first two chapters introduce the CLIC project and review the state-of-the-art beam position monitoring techniques.
Chapter 3 presents the design of the BPM. The stripline technology has been selected, as it is the only one among the most commonly used BPM techniques to present a suitable frequency response to filter out the RF interference caused by the PETS. Choosing an appropriate length for the electrodes, it is possible to tune one the periodic notches in the stripline frequency response to 12 GHz. The influence of di erent electromagnetic and
geometrical aspects is also studied, such as beam coupling impedance or the ratio between longitudinal and transverse dimensions.
The design of the electronic acquisition system is presented in Chapter 4, considering the project requirements in terms of resolution (2 u m), accuracy (20 um) and time resolution (10 ns). Due to the high amount of units required, the number of electronics components has been minimized. As the designed signal processing scheme is based on charge integration, it can be adapted to di erent stripline pick-ups by simply modifying the attenuator settings according to the required output signal levels.
The laboratory characterization tests of the prototype stripline BPM, in the low and the high frequency ranges, performed with a thin wire and a coaxial waveguide, respectively, are described in Chapter 5. The measurement results are compared with the theoretical estimation and the electromagnetic field simulations. In addition, the high-frequency test reveals that the first prototype stripline BPM does not provide su cient suppression of the 12 GHz PETS RF interference. An additional study proposed several modifications and guidelines for a second prototype stripline BPM.
Finally, Chapter 6 presents the beam tests of the prototype stripline BPM at the CLIC Test Facility 3 (CTF3) in the Test Beam Line (TBL), a scaled version of the CLIC Drive Beam decelerator. Two types of tests were performed: linearity/sensivity and resolution. These results are compared to the ones in the laboratory characterization tests. An upper bound of the resolution is estimated performing a Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) analysis.
: En studie om slow fashionföretags förhållningssätt till marknadsföring / Is it possible to do marketing in a sustainble way? : A study of slow fashion companies approach toward marketingRobertsson, Ella, Nylander, Jenny January 2021 (has links)
Slow fashion companies work more with sustainability, both for consumers and their employees. There is a strong focus on preserving the environment while companies compete with fast fashion chains that mass-produce clothes and sell at low prices. The big problem in industrial production is about how to try to reduce emissions and impact on the environment and manage overconsumption through sustainable marketing. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the characteristics of slow fashion companies in relation to fast fashion companies and how slow fashion companies in the clothing industry market their sustainability work to consumers. The study also examines how companies work with marketing to reach their current and future consumers. The study has a qualitative approach, and the empirical material is collected through semistructured interviews with four slow fashion companies. We have also collected empirical material through studies of the companies' public material such as websites and social media to supplement the interviews. The results are analyzed with the help of previous research and the concepts of slow- vs. fast fashion and marketing. Furthermore, corporate responsibility is analyzed with the help of concepts and models within triple results, corporate social responsibility, certifications, and legitimacy. The last thing in the study that is analyzed is the consumer's responsibility in the form of political consumption and the activities boycott and buycott. Results show that all four companies are positive about working with sustainability because the environment and their work will decline, but that the companies want to reach more consumers and choose consumption by influencing consumers to make fewer unnecessary purchases.

E-kronan och bankerna : En kvalitativ studie om e-kronans påverkan på den svenska banksektorn / The e-krona and the banks : A qualitative study on the impact of the e-krona on the Swedish banking sectorLeidehall, Kim, Aronsson, Magnus, Nyrén, Oscar January 2024 (has links)
This study is written in Swedish. Today, the Swedish society is nearly cashless and the progression towards this has been rapid. Due to digitization and the state's potentially changed position on the payment market, the Riksbanken has investigated possibilities and initiated the development of its own central bank-issued digital currency called e-krona. The aim of the study is to investigate whether and how the introduction of the e-krona as a means of payment, promotes sustainable financial development based on the opportunities and risks that may arise from the perspective of the banking sector. The study is qualitative and consists of financial theory together with nine semi-structured interviews that have been conducted to achieve its purpose. The interviewees consist of selected experts who are or have been active in commercial banks, the Riksbanken, the Finansinspektionen and Fintech organizations. The study finds that the e-krona can strengthen financial stability and maintain the value ratio between money. In addition, risks are identified with the e-krona where large costs are seen as an essential part together with speculation and information asymmetry. The study has also resulted in the e-krona being able to contribute with innovation and technology development, which are seen as significant opportunities. A central conclusion is that the e-krona can promote sustainable development if the design allows it to take into account the four pillars of sustainable financial development, but that this depends on how it will be designed.

Nyproduktionsimmiterande remake - ett alternativ för avfallshantering? / New production-imitating remake – a possible alternative for textile waste management?Millard, Linnea, Broberg, Hugo January 2024 (has links)
The study aims to investigate the consumption of energy, water, and chemicals in the bleaching and dyeing processes for new-production imitating remakes versus new production. By examining this, a discussion can be initiated on whether new-production imitating remakes are a viable alternative for the textile industry to address its environmental issues and textile waste. By testing bleaching, dyeing, and measuring selected parameters in a lab environment, we have created a test representation of how a potential process could work. Using the Higg-Index, we have then been able to get an indication of how high the resource consumption would be at an industrial level with conventional and resource-saving methods. The results show that if the goal is to re-dye to the darkest color possible, the remake product should not be pre-bleached. The results also provided an indication of how many bleaching cycles would need to be done in a lab environment to achieve a completely white sample. This gave an indication of what the energy, water, and chemical consumption would be depending on the desired outcome. This thesis aims to encourage discussion of remakes and serve as a foundation for further research in the area, ultimately contributing to solutions that can make the textile industry more circular.

Designing online tasks to consolidate the intake and foster second language acquisition of Arabic-speaking learners of French as a foreign language in EgyptKhalil-Akil, Hagar 22 September 2011 (has links)
The objective of this research, which lies within the field of language teaching and especially the integration of the Internet in the teaching/learning of foreign languages (Henceforth L2), is to enhance students‘ intake and improve L2 acquisition (French in this case) in French as a foreign language classes through a hybrid environment based on macro-tasks performed in distance and micro-tasks administered in class. This environment also relies on the exploitation of the Internet to design learning tasks and to create a virtual resource center in order to address the specific difficulties that students faced in their learning of the L2. This action research was conducted in Egypt for Egyptian Arabic-language students learning French as a foreign language (FFL) in the French Culture and Cooperation Centre (CFCC) in Cairo. It helped me develop this hybrid task environment to validate the general hypothesis of my research, which states that! learning tasks based on exploiting the Internet can reinforce the intake and improve the acquisition of FFL. This environment allowed me to implement learning experiences that are potentially favorable to the acquisition of L2 through the completion of macro-tasks performed in distance as well as micro-tasks performed in class. These tasks were administered through our virtual resource center. Therefore, Iconducted a series of experimental studies to assess different tasks‘ learnability when performed by Egyptian learners of L2. These tasks were completed independently and/or in collaboration, under various conditions. They were intended to first denativize the intake of L2 learners in order to then help them produce comprehensible output in the L2. The use of the Internet allowed me to present learners with authentic input in the planning and completion of macro-tasks and to create a virtual resource center for the production of micro-tasks. Thanks to the methodology applied in this research, I was able to validate my initial hypotheses and make this environment transferable and adaptable to other contexts as well. The content of the tasks is relative to its learnability. I would finally add that the conditions and context in which these tasks were performed (the failure of technology and Internet network, which may happen quite often in this setting) obviously played a bi! g role in their successful or unsuccessful completion and those factors must be given equal attention in L2 acquisition research.
