Computational Sustainability Assessment of Algal Biofuels and Bioproducts for Commercial Applications

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: To date, the production of algal biofuels is not economically sustainable due to the cost of production and the low cost of conventional fuels. As a result, interest has been shifting to high value products in the algae community to make up for the low economic potential of algal biofuels. The economic potential of high-value products does not however, eliminate the need to consider the environmental impacts. The majority of the environmental impacts associated with algal biofuels overlap with algal bioproducts in general (high-energy dewatering) due to the similarities in their production pathways. Selecting appropriate product sets is a critical step in the commercialization of algal biorefineries. This thesis evaluates the potential of algae multiproduct biorefineries for the production of fuel and high-value products to be economically self-sufficient and still contribute to climate change mandates laid out by the government via the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. This research demonstrates: 1) The environmental impacts of algal omega-3 fatty acid production can be lower than conventional omega-3 fatty acid production, depending on the dewatering strategy. 2) The production of high-value products can support biofuels with both products being sold at prices comparable to 2016 prices. 3) There is a tradeoff between revenue and fuel production 4) There is a tradeoff between the net energy ratio of the algal biorefinery and the economic viability due to the lower fuel production in a multi-product model that produces high-value products and diesel vs. the lower economic potential from a multi-product model that just produces diesel. This work represents the first efforts to use life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis to assess the economic and environmental sustainability of an existing pilot-scale biorefinery tasked with the production of high-value products and biofuels. This thesis also identifies improvements for multiproduct algal biorefineries that will achieve environmentally sustainable biofuel and products while maintaining economic viability. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil and Environmental Engineering 2016

Techno-Economic Analysis of a Concentrating Solar Power Plant Using Reduction/Oxidation Metal Oxides for Thermochemical Energy Storage

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant technology can produce reliable and dispatchable electric power from an intermittent solar resource. Recent advances in thermochemical energy storage (TCES) can offer further improvements to increase off-sun operating hours, improve system efficiency, and the reduce cost of delivered electricity. This work describes a 111.7 MWe CSP plant with TCES using a mixed ionic-electronic conducting metal oxide, CAM28, as both the heat transfer and thermal energy storage media. Turbine inlet temperatures reach 1200 °C in the combined cycle power block. A techno-economic model of the CSP system is developed to evaluate design considerations to meet targets for low-cost and renewable power with 6-14 hours of dispatchable storage for off-sun power generation. Hourly solar insolation data is used for Barstow, California, USA. Baseline design parameters include a 6-hour storage capacity and a 1.8 solar multiple. Sensitivity analyses are performed to evaluate the effect of engineering parameters on total installed cost, generation capacity, and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Calculated results indicate a full-scale 111.7 MWe system at $274 million in installed cost can generate 507 GWh per year at a levelized cost of $0.071 per kWh. Expected improvements to design, performance, and costs illustrate options to reduce energy costs to less than $0.06 per kWh. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2017

This work is a contribution to archaeological research that can provide the understanding about the formation of geographical space and their transformations. Both for the Geography and the Archeology the study of techniques is fundamental, for it is through them that man can measure their cultural level. Trying to understand and realize that these techniques are the key to what the habits and customs of prehistoric people were, because through these techniques is that we can know what were their way of life and their relation to space. With this we can see that in a more comprehensive analysis of their techniques we can describe the customs of peoples who inhabited a region. Here, the project aims to analyze the material found during the archaeological excavations, seeking to identify, through a established site to serve as a parameter to which techniques were used by prehistoric peoples who inhabited the region, and understand and identify which origin of these peoples and groups that belonged, and the way in which they interact to the natural environment for the construction of the geographical area in which they inhabited in the past. By identifying these people, we will not only discover a part of our regional history, as well as advancing the understanding of the evolution of man as an agent of transformation of the space in which they lived and interacted.

January 2010 (has links)
Assim, esse processo nos revela o uso desigual do tempo e do espaço em Rondonópolis, resultando na fragmentação do território e na manutenção e/ou agravamento de desigualdades sócio-territoriais herdadas / Abstract: This study aimed for understanding of the new uses of territory of Rondonópolis - MT, resulting from the internalization process of the techno-scientific Milieu, in the context of expansion of soya agribusiness to areas of cerrado from brazilian central west, particularly in state of Mato Grosso. We start from the presupposition that the territorial modernization of Rondonópolis, through the installation of a new system of objects and actions, characteristic of the techno-scientific period, caused the re-functionalization of this subspace, making it a functional center, instrumental and able to respond effectively to the demands of the hegemonic agents of globalized capitalism, here retracted by soya agribusiness. This way, while this small minority uses of corporate the territory, interpreting it as a resource, enjoying the new factors of modernity in its fullness, the rest of local society just uses some parts of this same territory, the territory as a shelter, and the new technical and organizational system from the modernization. This way, this process reveals to us the uneven use of time and space in Rondonópolis, resulting in fragmentation of the territory and the maintenance and/or aggravation of social territorial inequalities inherited / Doutor

Teaching ethos in narrative autobiographical techno: embodiment, reframing and self reflection image of themselves in teacher vie rÃcits / Ethos docente na narrativa tecnoautobiogrÃfica: corporificaÃÃo, ressignificaÃÃo e autorreflexÃo da imagem de si em rÃcits de vie de professores

Janicleide Vidal Maia 01 April 2016 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The new world order, called Technocracy (XAVIER, 2009) indicates that the school can not ignore the reality in which it operates, it is constituent of a communications transformation process promoted by new technologies, but incidents also in ways of working , to decide, to think. Given this and new pedagogical framework, we aim therefore investigate the constitution of the discursive ethos anchored in three aspects of autobiographical narratives, namely the report of the teaching pedagogical praxis - front postmodern contextual influence and adequacy challenge to current educational environment in the clinical interview (MAIA-VASCONCELOS, 2005), the redefinition of the self-image of the teachers vie ârÃcitâ and narrative self-receptivity. The research corpus is composed of 20 techno autobiographical narratives. The research rhetoric composition has a multidisciplinary theoretical approach, which includes studies in the areas of education, sociology, philosophy and linguistics, under different axes, namely: the studies of autobiographical narratives, as a research method, data analysis and formation of narrative (BOLÃVAR, DOMINGO e FERNÃNDEZ, 2001; DOMINICÃ, 2007; PASSEGI, 2011; BERTAUX, 2010; BRUNER, 2006; JOSSO, 2009; LEJEUNE, [2008] 2014; MAIA-VASCONCELOS, 2003; PINEAU e LE GRAND, 2012; BAKHTHIN, 2003); studies of the self-image in speech (AMOSSY, 2005), the biographical embodiment (JOSSO, 2007, 2008, 2012); the sensitive body (BOIS e RUGIRA, 2006; HUMPICH, 2008); the discursive ethos (MAINGUENEAU, 1995, 2006, 2011); technological habitus (BOURDIEU, 2002, 2003, 2004; BOURDIEU e CHARTIER, 2012; ALBUQUERQUE, 2005); the relationship between the foreshadowing, figuration and refiguration narrative (RICOEUR, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000a, 2000b, 2011); the approaches to the post-modern educational context and the new pedagogy (UNESCO, 2005, 2008; DEMO, 2009; FINO, 2008; LIBÃNEO, 1998; CAHRLOT, 2008; KENSKY, 2012, 2013); the relationship between time and reflexivity (GIDDENS, 2002); the postmodern historical context (BALMAN, 2001). The analysis has revealed that teachers show be aware that, in addition to expertise in their area, must show, in particular, digital skills (CARENZIO, 2012). Therefore, the survey results allow us to say that the teachers ethos emerges in techno autobiographical narrative in the unveiling of a discursive game in which the narrative setting signifies that, interwoven by a dialectical relationship, in the same proportion that the pedagogical praxis report influences in the reframing and the constitution of the image itself, it is also reinterpreted and made from that image of themself new meaning. In this perspective, the driving strength that propels the subject to this constant reinterpretation of the image itself is grounded in the desire to break paradigms and improve on the use of digital technologies. Thus, the formation of technological habitus depends less generational factor and more social capital, cultural and economic teacher. So whether or not presenting a geek ethos, the postmodern teacher who took a praxis mediated by pedagogical digital artifacts is, above all, curious and this insignia is revealed in the desire to learn and improve themselves constantly.

Since its beginning, the photography and its hybrid nature, drawn by the conjunction of science and art, was treated more as a technological tool for service to those knowledges, and not as a phenomenon originally able to question their place in Western thought, this one understood as a reflexion of a particular modern project of research and experience. Taking as a point of analysis some aspects of their technological trajectory and their social integration, this study aims to examine philosophical basis for the understanding of photography in its digital contemporary setting, using the interpretative models proposed by Roland Barthes and Vilém Flusser, but also looking for support in the thought of Martin Heidegger. It is understood that the digital universe, especially when observing the processes of hybridization and the interconnections facilitated by certain characteristics of numeric, sets the ambience necessary for the photograph and its consequences, the techno-images, to be enjoyed within their prospects more original and elementary.

Solar heat pump systems for heating applications : Analysis of system performance and possible solutions for improving system performance

Poppi, Stefano January 2017 (has links)
Solar heat pump systems (SHPs) are systems that combine solar energy and heat pumps. SHPs have been investigated for several decades and have been proven to increase the share of renewable energy and reduce electric energy demand in residential heating applications. Many solar thermal heat pump systems have become market-available in recent years; however these systems are still not widely employed in the residential sector. This is due mainly to the high initial costs (investment and installation costs) of solar thermal heat pump systems, which limits their cost-effectiveness. Enhancing cost-effectiveness of solar thermal heat pump systems is necessary for a more effective and broader market penetration. In this thesis, solar thermal and photovoltaic systems combined with heat pumps for heating applications are treated. The overall aims of the thesis are to: 1) investigate techno-economics of SHPs and 2) investigate possible solutions for improving system performance of a reference solar thermal and heat pump system for residential heating applications. In the first part of the thesis, the influence of climatic boundary conditions on economic performance of SHPs has been investigated by means of: a) an economic comparison of SHPs found in the relevant literature and b) system simulations of the reference solar thermal heat pump system. In the second part of the thesis, potential solutions for improving system performance of the reference solar thermal heat pump system with limited change in system’ costs are investigated. A systematic approach was used for investigating cost-effectiveness of the system improvements in the reference system. Based on results of the cost-effectiveness analysis, some of the investigated system improvements were chosen for being included in the design of a novel solar thermal and air source heat pump system concept. The novel system was designed for a house standard with relatively high operating temperatures (55°C/45°C) in the space heating distribution system and for high space heating demand (123 kWh/m2·year). Finally, the thesis ends with a cost-effectiveness analysis of the novel system. /
QC 20170918
/ MacSheep / iNSPiRe

Performance assessment of biofuel production via biomass fast pyrolysis and refinery technologies

Shemfe, Mobolaji B. January 2016 (has links)
Biofuels have been identified as one of several GHG emission strategies to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the transport sector. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one approach to producing second generation biofuels. The bio-oil product of fast pyrolysis can be upgraded into essential gasoline and diesel range products with conventional refinery technologies. Thus, it is important to assess their techno- economic and environmental performance at an early stage prior to commercialisation. This research was conducted with the goal of evaluating and comparing the techno-economic and environmental viability of the production of biofuels from fast pyrolysis of biomass and upgrading of bio-oil via two refinery technologies, viz. hydroprocessing and zeolite cracking. In order to achieve this aim, process models of fast pyrolysis of biomass and bio-oil upgrading via hydroprocessing and zeolite cracking were developed. The fast pyrolysis model was based on multi-step kinetic models. In addition, lumped kinetic models of the hydrodeoxygenation reactions of bio-oil were implemented. The models were verified against experimental measurements with good prediction and formed the foundation for the development of a 72 t/day fast pyrolysis plant model in Aspen Plus®. Several strategies were proposed for the two pathways to enhance energy efficiency and profitability. All in all, the results revealed that the hydroprocessing route is 16% more efficient than the zeolite cracking pathway. Moreover, the hydroprocessing route resulted in a minimum fuel selling price of 15% lower than that from the zeolite cracking pathway. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the techno-economic and environmental performance of the both pathways depends on several process, economic and environmental parameters. In particular, biofuel yield, operating cost and income tax were identified as the most sensitive techno-economic parameters, while changes in nitrogen feed gas to the pyrolysis reactor and fuel yield had the most environmental impact. It was concluded that hydroprocessing is a more suitable upgrading pathway than zeolite cracking in terms of economic viability, energy efficiency, and GHG emissions per energy content of fuel produced.

Aillaud, Jean-Daniel 12 September 2011 (has links)
When medicine based on a techno-scientific logic is widely practised based upon proofs and facts, this ‘Evidence Based Medicine’ is supported by the scientific principles of quantification, presentation and the universalism of biomedicine. When health is defined by statistics, when human suffering is measured on a simple model of brain function, the postmodern citizen is taken over by a hyper-medicalisation of existence. This thesis seeks to account for a healthcare actuality in geriatric medicine. The obsessive logic of value for money, systematic statistical evaluation and their alliance with the death drive and its consequences in discourse and action, as well as the ethical challenge they pose to the society that they represent require analysis. The sole market value the patient represents in research for return and advantage requires us to examine the issue of the future of subjectivity directly and inevitably to ask questions about the ontology, and anthropology of the living postmodern subject reduced, as a patient to an incarnation of what Hannah Arendt termed ‘work’. Indeed, our contemporary postmodernity, through scientific process rejects purely and simply the fundamental structural lack of each subject, creating a certain artificiality of being. The task then, is to demonstrate that psychoanalysis through its methods and hermeneutics can still respond to contemporary ethical demands. Consequently focusing on listening to the signifiers the patient evokes works to safeguard, in this context, what Michel Foucault termed ‘a re-subjectivation proces’ and offers the opportunity to reintroduce the ‘minimal ethical errance’ currently indispensable in avoiding definitive closure of the ill subject. Finally, we accept the consideration that an alternative subjective discourse remains, even dressed up in errors, and that it does not constitute a ‘negation of truth knowledge’ but an intuitive knowledge created by the ill subject according to their own logic, attesting that these psychoanalytical ethics are clearly anthropological in nature.
