Filander, Carina, Asp, Sara January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the work is to investigate adult children's experiences of growing up with a parent who has bipolar disorder. The study has been based on a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews with eight adult participants to investigate their experiences during childhood, impact over adulthood and protective factors during childhood. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the respondents' statements and the identified themes were: challenges during growing up, trauma, protective factors and the childhood’s impact on adulthood. The results show that seven out of eight respondents experienced their upbringing as more or less traumatic and that their upbringing has affected them in different ways in adulthood, both in terms of their mental health and in their relationship building. Particularly prominent for all respondents have been their experiences of shame, taboo and isolation as a result of the parent's diagnosis, which has meant that none of the respondents received support from authorities or schools despite the traumas that occurred in their childhood. The conclusion is that growing up with a bipolar parent affects children in several ways. Children who have a large safety net more often feel better in adulthood, while for those children who have lived more isolated, it has often affected their mental well-being in a negative way.

Blom, Sofia, Törnros, Emma January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore social workers and health care workers perception of an enhanced collaboration between Child Health Care Services and Social Services and how this coalition can prevent social problems for children and their parents. Through a qualitative approach, empirical data was collected from two child health care workers and two social workers, utilizing a semi-structured interview technique. The data was analysed with a phenomenological approach. A deductive perspective assisted the analysing process of the empirical data, while utilizing the cooperation theory and attachment theory as frameworks. The findings indicate that collaboration between these two organizations is diminutive but emphasized that it could have positive effects for everyone involved, such as professionals, parents and children. Further, the results show that that a possible collaboration could promote children's health and prevent social problems in children and young people, as well as their families.

Den livsviktiga anknytningen i skuggan av missbruk : En systematisk litteraturstudie om barnets anknytning i förhållande till deras missbrukande mödrar / The Essential Attachment in the Shadow of Abuse : A Systematic Literature Review on Child Attachment in Relation to Their Substance-Abusing Mothers

Cameron, Emma January 2023 (has links)
The objective of this study was to examine how a child's attachment is influenced by having an alcohol- or drug-abusing mother. The importance of secure attachment for a child's positive development, made exploring the issues surrounding substance abuse, and its impact on the child's essential attachment, of great interest. A systematic literature review was conducted to analyze the published research on the topic. The results provide valuable insights into attachment, maternal substance abuse, and related risks and protective factors.  Furthermore, the findings shed light on the increased vulnerability of children whose mothers have engaged in substance abuse before, during, and after pregnancy, indicating a higher likelihood of developing insecure attachment patterns. However, it is important to note that there is no consensus among researchers. Some results suggest that children growing up with substance-abusing mothers do not necessarily exhibit insecure attachment or develop problems later in life due to the substance abuse. The gathered empirical evidence, however, supports the effectiveness of interventions targeting substance-abusing mothers in promoting security in the child's attachment. Nevertheless, it is crucial not to solely focus on interventions for mothers, but also to consider the measures that can be offered to children in unfavorable home environments, with the best interests of the child as a central principle in social work.

How preschool children's attachment is affected by language skills : A qualitative study on preschool teachers experiences of attachment to children with a mother tongue other than Swedish

Nathalie, Abbas January 2023 (has links)

Exploring Parasocial Relationships Formed in Isolation

Kamenova, Gabriela January 2024 (has links)
A few years ago Covid-19 locked people down at their homes, effectively limiting their social connections and pushing the communicative outlet of the online realm in the forefront. If one wanted to socialize or seek entertainment, there was almost no other choice but to do so via turning to popular or social media. However, with the newly increased frequency of exposure came the question of whether there was also a change in the formation of parasocial relationships formed in isolation and this thesis explores the meaningfulness and longevity of such connections, tracing them before, during and after the pandemic. It also makes note of phenomena such as loneliness, parasocial romance and parasocial breakup, additionally examining the degree of attachment formed to media figures during isolation, as well as their relevance to the public. To achieve that, the empirical portion of this study consists of a survey in which 114 participants had to answer questions relating to isolation and parasocial behaviour. Additionally, for the purposes of the thesis two social media creators were contacted for interviews and were asked to share their views on parasocial interactions and attachments as they observed them in isolation from the other side of the connection. On the basis of previously existing separate research in parasocial relations and isolation six hypotheses were formed in this thesis relating to people’s online activity, perceived loneliness and financial generosity, as well as the degree of relatability and attachment they felt towards media personae.

Marital Satisfaction and Parental Mental Health in Association with Secure-Base Provision to School-Age Children

Oosterhouse, Kendra 08 1900 (has links)
The current study examines interrelations among family factors in a sample of married couples with children in middle childhood. Specifically, this study tested the associations between parents' mental health, marital satisfaction, and provision of a secure base through emotional sensitivity to the child. We further explored bidirectional and moderation effects between spouses. Participants included 86 heterosexual couples residing in the North Texas community. Using the actor-partner interdependence model, multilevel modeling results indicated that both spouse's mental health symptomology and relationship satisfaction are linked to parent's self-perceived ability to provide a secure base; several gender effects were also found. Additionally, actor relationship satisfaction significantly moderated the association between actor mental health symptomology and secure-base provision. In the context of low actor satisfaction, as the actor's mental health symptomology increases, secure-base provision also increases; however, in the context of high actor satisfaction, as actor's mental health symptomology increases, secure-base provision decreases. Additionally, partner relationship satisfaction significantly moderated the association between partner mental health symptomology and actor secure-base provision. In the context of low partner satisfaction, as partner mental health symptomology increases, actor secure-base provision increases; however, in the context of high partner satisfaction, as partner mental health symptomology increases, actor secure-base provision decreases. Spill-over, compensatory, and cross-over hypotheses, strengths, limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.
