Traduire la culture dans le roman irlandais contemporain - le cas du roman historique / Translating culture in the contemporary Irish novel - the case of the historical novel

Beaujard, Marion 07 January 2016 (has links)
This study analyses the complex relationship between translation and culture, and more specifically the issues arising from the translation of cultural references into a different language. It focuses on a body of contemporary Irish historical novels translated into French. This corpus comprises five novels written by Sebastian Barry, Dermot Bolger, Roddy Doyle and William Trevor. All five novels take place during the same historical period, namely the first half of the twentieth century. This shared historical context guarantees the presence of a base of cultural references common to all novels. This study will therefore take on both a descriptive and comparative approach in order to analyse the range of solutions that were implemented to translate these references. It will aim at uncovering the areas of Irish culture that demonstrate a particular resistance to intercultural transfer, as well as foregrounding recurring translational trends within the translated texts. Additionally, the novels under study all revise a number of historical, cultural and identity constructs, in particular the idea of a homogeneous Irishness that is exclusively Gaelic, Catholic and rural. This approach constitutes an essential key to understanding the novels and therefore represents a significant issue and challenge for the translation of cultural references. Accordingly, the study also attempts to examine the modifications undergone by these specific cultural representations during the translation process. It is supported and completed by researches carried out in the fields of translation studies as well as Irish literature and history.

Amabili, Rita 03 1900 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to analyze a praxis, mine, using praxeology techniques, in an attempt at reaffirming the validity of my work as an author serving faith. As a matter of fact, the writing of Saffia, femme de Smyrne, which started after about fifteen years of an active professional life as a writer, lead me to believe that this historical novel and its presentation are tools adapted for the transmission of the Gospel. My research begins with a general presentation of the work of fiction, Saffia, femme de Smyrne, as well as the ensuing conferences. I then put into words the observation of the secondary discourse composed of readers’ opinions or impressions. My interpretation and/or hypothesis arise from my problematisation defined by the praxeological question Why do I do what I do and through the five development functions. The part relating to the transmission of the Gospel is evaluated through readings in theology which highlight the studies of authors such as Jean-Guy Nadeau, Pierre Vadeboncœur, and Norbert Greinacher, while that referring to the social sciences is studied using works of specialists such as Gérard Delteil, Régis Debray, Félix Moser and Antoine Compagnon. Supported by these different studies, I am in a better position to define what fiction can bring to the transmission of the Gospel based on studies of fiction in theology by authors such as Paul Ricœur and Joseph Moingt. I conclude with a reflection on the transmission method of Saffia, femme de Smyrne and, I hope, with an explanation, namely, of why I continue using fiction to transmit the Gospel. A short story makes it possible for me to apply my study and, thereby, to open my reflection in a praxis.

Boisjoly-Cousineau, Marilou 12 1900 (has links)
The first two novels of Michel Folco, Dieu et nous seuls pouvons (1991) and Un loup est un loup (1995), were well received by the general public and the press, but were largely ignored by the academic community. These historical novels do however deserve our attention. This Dumas admirer proposes adventure novels of historical inspiration which seem to be constructed in the purest form of the genre. Yet the texts are more complex than it appears: they have absorbed a strong and multiple intertext, incorporated disturbing social fantasies and they offer an original narrative of the relationship between Man and Nature. Centered around the characters of the executioner and the wolf, the novels present a unique approach to these symbols of evil and question the ancestral hatred to which they are subjected. In this fictional universe, haunted by vengeance, it is society as a whole that is depicted as violent, intolerant and cruel. The notion of evil is redefined, questioned and distorted. It is this very distortion that is the topic of this thesis, whose purpose is to show how these texts transform historical accounts as well as mythical and religious representations.

Starting from the analysis of a series of Hispanic historical novels and working on the presumption that History and Literature have always been living under a friendly relationship and keeping an intensive dialogue, we intent to point out in this work some of the resources and proceedings which are inherent to the historiographic fiction. In order to do so we set up ourselves the challenge to analyze more specifically under the concepts of the contemporary historical novels, the books El último crimen de Colón (200l), by the Argentinean Marcelo Leonardo Levinas and Colón a los ojos de Beatriz (2000), by the Spanish Pedro Piqueras. Both novels present as character the Admiral Christopher Columbus who is recreated in them through a poetic discourse. The analysis of the mentioned novels intends to point out some of the formal aspects used in their elaboration which turn out as being a historiographic metafiction discourse such as parody, carnivalization, and intertextuality, between others. Those procedures contribute to create new images of the discoverer of America. Using complex procedures of building up images of the discoverer these novels establish a process of questioning the historical truths concerning the man and his acts, calling into question even the historical sources of references which are constantly rewritten. In this way our intention is to establish the differences between the assertions of the historical discourse and the artistic discourse of the poetry under which the novels and the images of the discoverer here analyzed were created. Poetry of hipertextuality is shown to us in relation to the theme of the discovery of America through transtextuality.

Transgressions dans l’œuvre narrative d’Angelina Muñiz-Huberman / Transgressions in the narrative work of Angelina Muñiz-Huberman

Perez Aparicio, Naarai 05 July 2013 (has links)
Angelina Muñiz-Huberman (1936) has developed her narrative work, poetic and essayistic for over four decades in Mexico. Introducer of the new historical novel in Mexican literature, her narratives are characterized for exposing the true human nature of the characters through introspection. Daughter of Republican exiles, her work reveals reconciliation with this event, adjudging its positive effects. The search for identity that emerges from a childhood contrasted between the old Spain and Mexico's present completes with Jewish exile from the maternal family. Consequently, the exile unfolds in all its forms through everyday stories of unusual characters and the introduction of the narrator's point of view. The need for expression experienced by the writer, belonging to the "Spanish-Mexican" group, raises a number of narrative and stylistic ruptures within her creative work. The rewriting of the childhood through the seudomemorias, the innovative use of typographical signs, the reconstruction of history and a strong trend toward feminine writing, are the subject of this study.

A Ilustre Casa de Ramires: entrecruzamento da ficção com a História em Eça de Queirós / The Illustrious House of Ramires: intersection of fiction with History in Eça de Queirós

Matias, Felipe dos Santos 03 February 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-26T13:44:20Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 1189369 bytes, checksum: 1e594e3a7ca3d541b81c1fcb0d03db91 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-03 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / The purpose of this study is to carry out a research on History and Literature in the novel The Illustrious House of Ramires (1900), by the Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, aiming to show how his fiction builds up the representation of historical events, and discussing the discursive and narrative dimension, both in Literature and History. A theoretical-critical analysis is methodologically developed in the narrative The Illustrious House of Ramires, allowing the intersection of history and fiction: the historical novel "The Tower of D. Ramires", written by the character Gonçalo Mendes Ramires, an impoverished aristocrat, decadent, who had weak moral values. This analysis is developed from the theoretical studies that focus on the relationship between Literature and History, and the historical novel as a hybrid genre that makes these relationships possible. In this context, Georg Lukacs’ study, The Historical Novel, is the guiding point. The theories of dialogism, by Mikhail Bakhtin, and intertextuality, by Julia Kristeva, are also valuable for this study, because they allow the comprehension of essential elements in the construction of the Portuguese writer’s novel, once the writing of the historical novel "The Tower of D. Ramires", named "The Last Eça" by traditional critics, allows the dialogism with Walter Scott, Alexandre Herculano and the intertextuality with their respective novels in this genre. The historical novel "The Tower of D. Ramires", created by the character Gonçalo throughout the narrative, transforms History into a reason of representation and a theme of rewriting the portrayed period, the Middle Age at the time of D. Alfonso II. Eça de Queirós’ fictional text promotes a rereading of the Portuguese past and a questioning of the present, the declining end of the nineteenth century in Portugal. The emergence of History in the development of the narrative implies an attitude of interpretation of the Portuguese identity, especially in relation to values and attitudes that were consolidated in medieval times and that, at the end of the nineteenth century, were corrupted and disfigured. This research emphasizes the relevance of the book The Illustrious House of Ramires, in the production of the Portuguese writer, as a text that sets up a provocative intersection of Literature and History, as well as the artistic importance of the last phase of the Portuguese writer - called "The Last Eça" – period during which he – unlike the beliefs of the traditional criticism that argued that "The Last Eça" was a passive and accommodating bourgeois – continued to contribute to the critical examination of the Lusitanian society at the end of the nineteenth century, especially in relation to the questioning that the writer articulates, in the novel, about the decadent aristocracy of Portugal.

The Historical Imagination of Late Enlightenment.

Smyčka, Václav January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation deals with the transformations of historiography and perception of the historical time in the last third of 18th and at the beginning of the 19th centuries. The central questions it investigates are: How has the way of locating (Czech) society in time changed? How did representations of past fundamentally change between 1760s and 1820s, in the era of the so-called "Sattelzeit"? What is the relationship between these changes and the way in which history was represented? What impact did the changes of media, book markets, and culture of reading have in this time? What are the political and aesthetic consequences of these changes? The answer to these questions is found in five fundamental innovations of Enlightenment historiography. These innovations (understood according to Niklas Luhmann's system theory in order to reduce complexity) - fundamentally influenced the way in which late Enlightenment thinkers conceptualized the flow of historical time and the praxis of historiography. It is about the spread of cumulative concepts of knowledge in historia litteraria related to the growth of book markets, narrativisation of the historical experience (as a result of emergence of the newly incoming fictional genres of the historical novels),, philosophy of history as a new idealistic...

A Muralha was broadcasted by Globo Channel during The 500 years Celebration of Brazil Discovery, in 2000, and it had the paulista excursions as the main theme. Besides that, this soap opera recovered national Brazilian character ideologies, similarly to what The 500 years Celebration did. At this time, we could see the celebration of Nation s birth, and, in order to achieve a better understanding about this subject, we studied European nationalism and its consequences in Brazil during 19th and 20th centuries. We analyzed the potential of the historical novels to integrate the nationally imagined communities and we saw how television, Globo Channel specifically, gradually took the part of transmitting Images of Brazil through soap operas, to a wide audience and many times in partnership with the Brazilian State. The exhibition of the soap opera A Muralha happened in this context, from January 4 to March 28 in 2000.
