Product-mix decision under the perspective of the time-driven activity-based costing for multi-constrained.

Abraão Freires Saraiva Junior 12 February 2015 (has links)
This research addresses the theme \"product-mix decision\" that, in a Production Engineering perspective, can be understood as the definition of the optimum quantity to be produced for each type of product in a given period, considering these products compete for limited resources in order to maximize the firm economic result (e.g. operating income). Product-mix decision models use information on profitability, which is determined from analysis and confrontation between sales prices and costs (spending) of the products supplied by the company. These products costs are measured by costing methods. Among the existing costing methods in the literature, absorption costing, the direct costing, the activity based costing (abc) and time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) are highlighted. TDABC, despite appearing in the literature in 2004 and detailed in 2007 from a book written by Robert Kaplan and Steven Anderson, has not been directly explored in the literature that deals with the product-mix decision considering multi-constrained operations context, unlike some of the other costing methods mentioned. In this context, to fill in this theoretical gap, the PhD thesis aims to propose a quantitative model to underpin the product-mix decision under the perspective of TDABC for multi-constrained operations. To meet this goal, initially, the thesis is developed methodologically from a bibliometric analysis and a citation analysis of papers on product mix decision and on TDABC published by international academic journals related to Production Engineering and Management Accounting research areas. Then the manuscript is methodologically developed from a literature research to discuss concepts and positioning the research on product-mix decision and on costing methods, emphasizing TDABC. Finally, quantitative modeling is employed in order to propose a model under the perspective of TDABC to assist product-mix decision, which is expressed as a linear programming model. The proposed model incorporates techniques and concepts related to management control over costs, the hierarchy of activities taxonomy, the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and mathematical programming. An application of the proposed model is illustrated from a didactic example involving a multi-constrained manufacturing operation and considering deterministic parameters. The proposed model is operationalized through the Solver® and the Microsoft Office Excel® softwares, and, as main results, it was calculated the product-mix that maximizes the company\'s operating profit expected for the analyzed planning horizon. Some critical reflections are made regarding the proposed model application. Finally, it is concluded that, under the perspective of TDABC, the proposed model can be useful to support the product-mix decision of multiconstrained operations.

Leal, Ricardo da Rosa January 2010 (has links)
Time Driven Activity Based Costing (TDABC). / This final paper has the objective of demonstrating the importance of the correct usage of some tools to measure the response obtained through the relationship built with customers. The attempts to reach, somehow, the differentiation towards the competitors are countless, always trying to obtain the acknowledgment and preference of these customers. This can be through differentiated products, in terms of size, packaging, structure or in terms of the service level offered from sale, going through delivery, after sales, among others. Besides demonstrating that the usage of traditional methodologies can generate inadequate information, and as a consequence, distorted decisions, a differentiated approach will be suggested, through the application of the concept of strategic cost management, more specifically, Time Driven Activity Based Costing (TDABC). This paper suggests the development of a tool that makes the identification of more precise information possible about the real profitability of clients, concerning the different products and levels of services offered.

On digital forensic readiness for information privacy incidents

Reddy, Kamil 26 September 2012 (has links)
The right to information privacy is considered a basic human right in countries that recognise the right to privacy. South Africa, and other countries that recognise this right, offer individuals legal protections for their information privacy. Individuals, organisations and even governments in these countries often have an obligation under such laws to protect information privacy. Large organisations, for example, multinational companies and government departments are of special concern when it comes to protecting information privacy as they often hold substantial amounts of information about many individuals. The protection of information privacy, therefore, has become ever more significant as technological advances enable information privacy to be breached with increasing ease. There is, however, little research on holistic approaches to protecting information privacy in large organisations. Holistic approaches take account of both technical and non-technical factors that affect information privacy. Nontechnical factors may include the management of information privacy protection measures and other factors such as manual business processes and organisational policies. Amongst the protections that can be used by large organisations to protect information privacy is the ability to investigate incidents involving information privacy. Since large organisations typically make extensive use of information technology to store or process information, such investigations are likely to involve digital forensics. Digital forensic investigations require a certain amount of preparedness or readiness for investigations to be executed in an optimal fashion. The available literature on digital forensics and digital forensic readiness (DFR), unfortunately, does not specifically deal with the protection of information privacy, which has requirements over and above typical digital forensic investigations that are more concerned with information security breaches. The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to address the lack of research into DFR with regard to information privacy incidents. It adopts a holistic approach to DFR since many of the necessary measures are non-technical. There is, thus, an increased focus on management as opposed to specific technical issues. In addressing the lack of research into information privacy-specific DFR, the thesis provides large organisations with knowledge to better conduct digital forensic investigations into information privacy incidents. Hence, it allows for increased information privacy protection in large organisations because investigations may reveal the causes of information privacy breaches. Such breaches may then be prevented in future. The ability to conduct effective investigations also has a deterrent effect that may dissuade attempts at breaching information privacy. This thesis addresses the lack of research into information privacy-specific DFR by presenting a framework that allows large organisations to develop a digital forensic readiness capability for information privacy incidents. The framework is an idealistic representation of measures that can be taken to develop such a capability. In reality, large organisations operate within cost constraints. We therefore also contribute by showing how a cost management methodology known as time-driven activity-based costing can be used to determine the cost of DFR measures. Organisations are then able to make cost versus risk decisions when deciding which measures in the framework they wish to implement. Lastly, we introduce the concept of a digital forensics management system. The management of DFR in a large organisation can be a difficult task prone to error as it involves coordinating resources across multiple departments and organisational functions. The concept of the digital forensics management system proposed here allows management to better manage DFR by providing a central system from which information is available and control is possible. We develop an architecture for such a system and validate the architecture through a proof-of-concept prototype. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Computer Science / unrestricted

"They're not including us!" : neighbourhood deprivation and older adults' leisure time physical activity participation

Annear, M. J. January 2008 (has links)
Population ageing and the tendency for older adults to have poorer health status than younger adults have raised concerns about potential increases in the number of elderly suffering disease and disability. Significantly, many health problems experienced in later life are associated with the onset of a more sedentary lifestyle. Increasing older adults' participation in leisure time physical activity (henceforth LTPA) offers an opportunity to reduce the prevalence of preventable morbidity in later life and offset a potential burden of ageing on the public health sector. As a forerunner to the development of strategies to increase older adults' LTPA participation, researchers have investigated the intrapersonal, interpersonal and, to a lesser extent, environmental influences on this health behaviour. Recent findings from studies of the adult population have suggested that neighbourhood deprivation, a measure of the socioeconomic conditions of small areas, may significantly influence LTPA participation. Extending previous findings, this research investigated how neighbourhood deprivation influenced older adults' LTPA participation. A total of 63 older adults were recruited from high- and low-deprivation neighbourhoods in Christchurch, New Zealand. Neighbourhoods were selected because of their relative positions on the New Zealand Deprivation Index and were characterised by the researcher as "East-town", a neighbourhood of high deprivation, and "West-town", a neighbourhood of low deprivation. The research incorporated a cross-sectional, comparative and mixed-methods approach. The methods of enquiry employed in this research included a recall survey, Q method, and semi-structured interviewing. Each method addressed a different aspect of the primary research question and provided data that was used in the creation of an integrated model depicting the influence of neighbourhood deprivation on older adults' LTPA participation. The results derived from the three research methods showed that older adults from the low-deprivation neighbourhood of West-town participated in LTPA more frequently than older adults from the high-deprivation neighbourhood of East-town. East-town was identified as having many physical and social environmental constraints to LTPA and comparatively few facilitators. Alternatively, West-town was found to have many physical and social environmental facilitators to LTPA and relatively few constraints. Neighbourhood attributes which appeared to influence older adults' LTPA participation included appropriateness of leisure provision, neighbourhood attractiveness, walkability, traffic, and perceptions of crime and antisocial behaviour. One implication of this research is that environmental interventions should be considered in attempts to engage older adults in LTPA for health purposes, particularly in high-deprivation neighbourhoods.

關鍵字:企業流程資訊分析模式、顧客利潤分析、時間導向作業基礎成本制度 / Information technology and manufacturing techniques are greatly improved by days. The globalization and liberalization make industrial competition fierce and ever-changing. Under such circumstances, the company managements can not only focus on internal topics but should observe the global economic development trend and also the commercial and industrial variety. They should put forward solution strategies to deal with the responses of competitors and requests of customers. Only then can they keep competition power and enhance the operation profit to continue sustainable operation and development in the sharp competition. Therefore the key success factor today is not to depend on operation scale and efficiency only but to bring creativeness into full play to find the competition advantage of the company. In addition, they should improve management conditions by means of rapid information operation and ever-growing business intelligent features or to create new business model. A case company is a component manufacturing and sales company. Its main products are connectors, flexible flat cable and wire harness. Facing the severe global competition as the others, the company is challenged by margin issue due to increasing cost of raw material and labor, customized products requests with high-mix/ low-volume. To conquer this business issue, the case company plans to utilize ERP to build up the “Product Pricing Program” to re engineer the pricing methodology by reflecting the increased cost in the quotations to customers. The pricing process can enhance the operation efficiency to respond to the variety market changes. To deal with the market changes, the case study is aimed to establish effective information system for the purpose of responding rapidly and precisely to pricing decision. The research reviews and inspects the sales flow of the case company by Process-Wide Information Organism (PWIO). It also combines the time-oriented activity base costing (ABC) to forecast the final gross profit of customers. Based on this, the case company could re-categorize the customer segmentation and put forward related sales strategy and enhancement on the demand of information system. Monthly excursions, from October 2006 to May 2008, were conducted at the Ecological Station of the Serid? (ESEC Serid?), Serra Negra do Norte municipality, using specific methodology for investigation of the aforementioned objectives. The two species presented similarities in space niche use, mainly in rocky habitat, however they differed in vertical microhabitat use with T. hispidus using a larger vertical microhabitat range. In the dry season the time of activity of both species was bimodal. In the wet season T. semitaeniatus showed a unimodal activity period, while T. hispidus maintained an bimodal activity period. In terms of importance in the diet, to both species, Hymenoptera/Formicidae and Isoptera predominated during the dry season. In the wet season, although Hymenoptera/Formicidae had larger importance among the prey items, lizards opportunistically predated on Lepidoptera larvae, Coleoptera larvae/adults and Orthoptera nymphs/adults. The foraging intensity revealed differences between the species, mainly in the wet season, when T. semitaeniatus was more active than T. hispidus. The mean activity body temperature of T. semitaeniatus was significantly higher than that of T. hispidus. The thermoregulatory behavior showed that during the dry season T. hispidus and T. semitaeniatus spent more time in shade or under filtered sun. In the wet season, T. hispidus did not show differences in the amount of time spent among the light exposure locations, however T. semitaeniatus spent most of their time exposed to direct sun or filtered sun. The reproductive cicle of T. hispidus and T. semitaeniatus occurred from the middle of the dry season to the beginning of the wet season. In both species, female reproductive activity was influenced by precipitation, whereas males exhibited spermatozoa in their testes throughout the year, and their reproductive activity was not related with any of the climatic variables analysed. In the two species, the fat storage varied inversely with reproductive activity, and there was no difference in fat body mass between females and males. We concluded that the segregation between T. hispidus and T. semitaeniatus in this caatinga area occurs in vertical space use, in the largest vagility of T. hispidus in microhabitat use and larger range size of their alimentary xviii items. Additionally, significant seasonal differences in relation to the activity period, body temperature, and foraging and termoregulatory behaviors between these two Tropidurus species facilitate their coexistence.

The association of cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity and ischemic ECG findings with coronary heart disease-related deaths among men

Hagnäs, M. (Magnus) 02 January 2018 (has links)
Abstract Despite advances in treatment of cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the most common cause of death in the Western countries; and its first manifestation is often sudden cardiac death (SCD). The development of CHD is a lifelong process, the pace of which is governed by the burden of several risk factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), exercise-induced myocardial ischemia and physical activity with the risk of CHD-related death, including SCD events among men with different risk factor profiles. This study is based on the population of the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, which recruited a sample of 2682 men aged 42–60 years. Their CRF was assessed with a maximal exercise test using respiratory gas analysis. Exercise-induced ST segment depression was defined as a ≥1 mm ST segment depression on the electrocardiogram. Anthropometric measurements, blood sample analyzes and questionnaires regarding leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and smoking were performed at baseline. Men with both low CRF and exercise-induced ST segment depression were at higher risk of death from CHD and SCD than men with high CRF without ST segment depressions. Men with low CRF and low LTPA were at higher risk of SCD than men with low CRF and high LTPA. The amount of LTPA did not alter the incidence on SCD among men with high CRF. These findings were adjusted for age, type 2 diabetes and CHD, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and serum C-reactive protein level. These findings emphasize the importance of physical activity and treatment of other modifiable risk factors, especially among the men with low CRF. / Tiivistelmä Sydän- ja verisuonisairauksien ennaltaehkäisystä ja hoidon edistysaskeleista huolimatta sepelvaltimotauti on edelleen kehittyneiden maiden yleisin kuolinsyy, sydänperäisen äkkikuoleman ollessa usein taudin ensimmäinen ilmentymä. Sepelvaltimotaudin syntyminen on pitkäaikainen prosessi, jossa riskitekijät määrittävät suurelta osin taudin etenemisen nopeuden. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää kliinisessä rasituskokeessa todetun aerobisen suorituskyvyn, sydänlihasiskemian sekä fyysisen aktiivisuuden yhteyttä sepelvaltimotautikuolemiin ja sydänperäisiin äkkikuolemiin eri sydän- ja verisuonisairauksien riskitekijäyhdistelmien omaavien miesten keskuudessa. Tämä tutkimus perustuu Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study- aineistoon, johon kuuluu 2682 42–60 vuotiasta miestä. Tutkittavien aerobista suorituskykyä arvioitiin kliinisessä rasituskokeessa mittaamalla hapenkulutus suoraan hengityskaasuista. Sydänlihasiskemian merkkinä pidettiin rasituksen provosoimaa ≥1 mm ST-välin laskua tutkittavien EKG:ssa. Tutkittavilta kartoitettiin alussa antropometriset mittaukset, verikokeet sekä kyselylomakkeilla selvitettiin mm. vapaa-ajan liikunnan määrää ja tupakointia. Miehet, joilla todettiin huono suorituskyky sekä samanaikainen rasituksen aiheuttama sydänlihasiskemia olivat suuremmassa vaarassa menehtyä sepelvaltimotautiin ja sydänperäiseen äkkikuolemaan verrattuna miehiin, joilla todettiin hyvä suorituskyky eikä rasituksen aiheuttamaa sydänlihasiskemiaa. Miehet joilla todettiin huono suorituskyky, mutta harrastivat enemmän liikuntaa vapaa-ajalla, olivat pienemmässä vaarassa sydänperäiseen äkkikuolemaan kuin huonokuntoiset miehet, jotka harrastivat vähemmän liikuntaa vapaa-ajallaan. Vapaa-ajan liikunnan määrä ei muuttanut sydänperäisen äkkikuoleman esiintyvyyttä hyväkuntoisten miesten keskuudessa. Nämä tulokset vakioitiin iän, tyypin 2-diabeteksen, todetun sepelvaltimotaudin, tupakoinnin, alkoholin kulutuksen, painoindeksin, systolisen verenpaineen, seerumin LDL-kolesterolin ja C-reaktiivisen proteiinin suhteen. Nämä löydökset korostavat liikunnan harrastamisen tärkeyttä muiden riskitekijöiden hoidon ohessa, erityisesti lähtötasoltaan huonokuntoisilla miehillä.
