(RS)Martins, Liana Bach January 2008 (has links)
This thesis concerns the reports of travelers who came to the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the province of Rio Grande do Sul within the period of 1800-1850. Based on such accounts, we seek to analyze their thoughts about the city, emphasizing the way these travelers saw, interpreted and described the landscape and the urban aspects of Porto Alegre. Simultaneously we go through the official documents produced by the City Council to try to apprehend how the local authorities perceived the aspects related by those travelers during this period, also considering the claims of the local population about the area. Also, the analysis of the historical maps and charts of this period allowed us to understand the spatial growth of the city. Our goal was to make a connection between the many impressions of Porto Alegre and also to establish what are the differences and resemblances between the foreign and the local points of view.

This dissertation brings notes and observations on the reports of travelers who visited Mato Grosso in the period 1808-1864, and were silenced in the documents of the Public Archives of the State of Mato Grosso. According to the survey covering, travel documents is becoming a traveler lives reborn from the lines drawn by ancient narrators memoir reconstructing life histories. In each line covered, a dream, a wish, a story and new facts and relevant to someone or something that unfolds in exciting readings in painstaking and thorough research events. The impressions left by these travelers about the places visited are always present in many ways. Clergymen, militaries, engineers, among others, were the offices of these men. Even being only men, silenced travelers, women also attended and completed the routine of Mato Grosso society. Between trips it was observed to be impossible the silence about such replete sources of political and social quarrels, passions, stories about diseases and natural wealth. Brother Angelo of Caramanico, Engineer Pedro Dias Paes Leme, Ensign Antonio João Ribeiro and Frei Mariano Bagnaia, although known regional history, were not addressed as travelers. Are also given the following rating: Lieutenant Francisco Bueno da Silva, Lieutenant Manoel Simoes Henriques, Sergeant John Manuel Henrique, Captain Antonio Joaquim Xavier del Valle, José Ribeiro do Nascimento, Hypólito Simas Bittencourt , Luiz Soares Viégas, Joaquim do Espírito Santo Barbosa, Major Jozé Constantino de Oliveira, Antonio Rodrigues Itunamas, Manoel Carneiro de Campos, Juan Mendes Salgado. Also a special emphasis was given to the situation of medicine that was being practiced at the time as: therapeutic employed, the processes of healing, types of medications, previous treatments, quarantine instructions, instruments and medicines used by apothecaries, pathological statistical maps, maps sick of hospitals and employed diets, taken from information provided by travelers and some doctors as Dr. Antonio Luis Patrício da Silva Manso (1830); Dr. Macário Pamphilo Nogueira (1855); Dr. Mendonça Rivani (1856); the 2nd surgeon José Cândido da Silva Murici (1859) ; the Deputy Surgeon - Major of the Army, Dr. José Antonio Murtinho (1856); the "Pharmacêutico " Doctor John Adolpho Josetti among others. This investigation looks upon the presence of female foreign tourists travelling in Brazil, specially alone or without male counterparts. The objective was to understand social expressions and representations regarding gender, femininity, masculinity, corporality, sexuality, age, race, and nationality that permeate and/or restrain these women travel practices in Brazil, turning to their experiences, social profiles, and local perceptions about them. To do so, an ethnographic work -- carried out in a context of leisure and beach tourism in Trancoso-Bahia -- is presented in dialogue with considerations on female travels in the media, 19th century women travel writings, and critic readings of the social sciences production on the changes in gender patterns, sexualities, and affects in contexts of migration and tourism. Remarks on images of ¿sex tourism¿ and ambiguos readings around the possibilities of female erotic pleasure offered to this research the opportunity to complexify cultural meanings of female international tourism, from the standpoint of frequentelly inequal economies and structures of power, as it is the context of international tourism in Trancoso. Finally, this investigation indicates how travelling and tourism, in circulating historic inequalities in terms of income, cultural capital, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality can strengthen or disturb sociocultural conventions, and reposition or provoke conformations in the political economy of contemporary tourism / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestra em Antropologia Social

The description of feeding in travel narratives occurred under the characteristic look of the traveler but also sets itself according to the own literary genre parameters. This made that the food and the gastronomic experience absorbed during the trip were considered thought in accordance with the senses in both directions. We then seek to focus on this thesis on questions such as how the food appeared described and what is the space and importance of its presence as seen in the travel descriptions of Auguste de Saint-Hilaire and Jean-Baptiste Debret / Mestrado / Mestre em História

Why do urban travelers select multimodal travel options: A repertory grid analysisClauß, Thomas, Döppe, Sebastian 25 November 2019 (has links)
The increasing number of travelers in urban areas has led to new opportunities for local government and private mobility providers to offer new travel modes besides and in addition to traditional ones. Multimodal travel provides an especially promising opportunity. However, until now the underlying reasons why consumers choose specific alternatives have not been fully understood. Hence, the design of new travel modes is mainly driven by obvious criteria such as environmental friendliness and convenience but might not consider consumers’ real or latent needs. To close this research gap, sixty in-depth interviews with urban travelers were conducted. To identify the perceptual differences of customers among different travel modes, the repertory grid technique as an innovative, structured interview method was applied. Our data show that urban travelers distinguish and select travel alternatives based on 28 perceptual determinants. While some determinants associated with private cars such as privacy, flexibility and autonomy are key indicators of travel mode choice, costs and time efficiency also play a major role. Furthermore, by comparing travel modes to an ideal category, we reveal that some perceptual determinants do not need to be maximized in order to fulfill customer needs optimally. A comparison of consumers’ perceptual assessments of alternative travel modes identifies specific advantages and disadvantages of all alternatives, and provides fruitful implications for government and private mobility providers.

Hikes, Huts and Houses: A Study of Hiking Community’s and Derelict Building Owners’ Perceptions towards a Potential Establishment of Travelers’ Huts Network in LithuaniaZelve, Karolina January 2022 (has links)
This paper presents a master’s thesis research project that aimed to explore the attitudes of members of Lithuanian hiking community and derelict building owners towards the possibility of adapting country’s abandoned rural buildings into a network of recreational ‘travelers’ huts’. Participants’ opinion on the need of such network as well as their management, location, building age, type, and other preferences were considered. During the two-phase mixed methods research project data was gathered through online questionnaire filled in by 624 members of Lithuanian hiking community and 10 in-depth interviews with derelict building owners, members of country’s hiking community and caretakers of two already operational travelers’ huts. The findings indicate that majority of research participants support the implementation of such project in Lithuania, preferring potential locations of huts in more remote and natural areas. Regarding type of buildings, it was given less significance than the location aspect, however a potential renovation of old wooden huts of traditional vernacular architecture was preferred slightly more than that of modern or Soviet-era buildings. Findings of the study also highlighted rather strong participants’ concerns regarding a diverse spectrum of issues: lack of history and ‘heritage’ of hiking and hutting in Lithuania, potential maintenance and management of the huts, safety, vandalism, privacy, and other. Qualitative data analysis provided evidence that many of those concern can be linked to low levels of social capital within Lithuanian society. Questions of huts’ management approaches, especially those of openness and accessibility of such buildings, showed rather unanimous opinions, suggesting a network of differently managed huts to cater divergent hikers’ needs might be a reasonable solution in Lithuania.

Corporate Christians and Terrible Turks: Economics, Aesthetics, and the Representation of Empire in the Early British Travel Narrative, 1630 - 1780Abunasser, Rima Jamil 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the evolution of the early English travel narrative as it relates to the development and application of mercantilist economic practices, theories of aesthetic representation, and discourses of gender and narrative authority. I attempt to redress an imbalance in critical work on pre-colonialism and colonialism, which has tended to focus either on the Renaissance, as exemplified by the works of critics such as Stephen Greenblatt and John Gillies, or on the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as in the work of scholars such as Srinivas Aravamudan and Edward Said. This critical gap has left early travel narratives by Sir Francis Moore, Jonathan Harris, Penelope Aubin, and others largely neglected. These early writers, I argue, adapted the conventions of the travel narrative while relying on the authority of contemporary commercial practices. The early English travelers modified contemporary conventions of aesthetic representation by formulating their descriptions of non-European cultures in terms of the economic and political conventions and rivalries of the early eighteenth century. Early English travel literature, I demonstrate, functioned as a politically motivated medium that served both as a marker of authenticity, justifying the colonial and imperial ventures that would flourish in the nineteenth century, and as a forum for experimentation with English notions of gender and narrative authority.

O conhecimento de mundos desconhecidos: palavras e coisas do português na literatura dos viajantes italianos / The knowledge of unknown worlds: words and things of the Portuguese language in the literature of the Italian travelersSchultz, Benilde Socreppa 28 March 2014 (has links)
This research aims to record the loans of the Portuguese language in the literature of Italian travelers who had contact with the Portuguese. Zolli (1995), Zaccaria (1905, 1927) and D\'Agostino (1994) consider that the lexicon of Italian travelers is a source of loans called casuals. Or: Neologisms that have not had the opportunity to be part of the Italian language, but are used to describe the new things that travelers find - and still do not exist in their own language. We can compare the casuals to comets, which remain in the heavens for a short time, lighting up and printing-up its beauty in the skies and then disappearing. So these loans appear momentarily, but do not vanish: get eternally printed, fulfilling their function: to illuminate and give color to the text. The researchs corpora will comprise the Italian travelers, especially those of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who were in colonies and overseas possessions. Soon after, we selected occurrences of loans and analyzed in the light of theories of Alves and Klajn. Therefore, this PhD research aims to survey the record of the casual lexicon of Portuguese literature by Italian travelers and examine how this lexicon often served to give a local color (GUSMANI, 1983; ALVES, 1990; APRILE, 2005) to the text, overwhelming the reader\'s imagination and expressing the desire of the traveler make his work undying, and eternal.
