Repertoire Memorization in Jazz Vol. 2 : Do College Jazz Programs Address the Subject?

Rabson Minoura, Kenji January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore to what extent and how different jazz programs on the college level include repertoire memorization in their curriculums. By repertoire memorization I mean the study and memorization of a certain amount of standard jazz repertoire, which include songs from the so-called great American songbook and tunes by jazz composers that are commonly played by jazz musicians around the world.  Whether the schools include repertoire memorization in their official curriculum or course descriptions or leave the subject to the discretion of the individual instructors is explored. Methods for teaching the subject, methods of assessing the students’ memorization, and views of different jazz department heads regarding the importance of the subject are also investigated. A sociocultural perspective is adopted in the study to see if academia attempts to address or perhaps recreate some of the sociocultural contexts that jazz learning existed in before jazz was included in music conservatories and universities. Eleven jazz programs and one jazz educator were asked to be a part of the study and of those, four schools responded. The data was collected in email correspondence with the four different department heads that were from the United States, Finland and Sweden (two schools). The results showed that the programs in Finland and the United States placed great importance on the subject and use required repertoire lists that the students were tested on. One of the Swedish programs had suggested repertoire lists for students without formal testing and the other Swedish program left the subject up to the individual instructors although the subject did seem to be encouraged. One unexpected observation from the repertoire lists used from the schools in Finland and the United States was that there were a surprisingly large number of songs that were not in common to both lists.

Les parodies de spectacles parisiens sous l'Ancien Régime : étude des procédés musicaux / The parodies of Parisian spectacles under L'Ancien Régime (1676-1752) : study of musical methods

Evanno-Ledoux, Gwenaëlle 29 November 2014 (has links)
The dramatic parody in the XVIIIth century is a theme which has often been tackled with. Indeed, there are numerous works about this subject, approaching the question in a literary or scenic point of view. What makes my work being special is identifying the subject which it belongs: musicology. Through the musicological analysis and popular airs rehabilitation, so as the study and the classification of the timbres according to their dramaturgy, the purpose of this thesis will be to understand how the parodies are built in a musical way. The study of the primary sources made possible the theorization of the literary and the musical understanding of this genre. Besides, these researches gave birth to new tools such as a typology of timbres or a catalogue of these airs, filed in metric and rhythmic incipits. Eventually, the point is: is the parody a so dilettante musical genre as it sounds? As a consequence, the musical works studied through this corpus will be very eclectic, the parodies aiming at several genres, such as the lyric tragedy, the ballet, the comic- opera and even the parody

Title tunes and the branding of music in Hollywood film franchises

Codsi, Marie-Claude January 2018 (has links)
The use of leitmotifs in films has often been critiqued. Theodor Adorno and Hanns Eisler went as far as to claim in 1947 that "The whole form language of current cinema music derives from advertising" and that leitmotifs were in part to blame. While I take a more neutral stance, I argue that Eisler and Adorno's critique is partly correct, especially in regards to film series produced from the 1960s onwards. The analytical work undertaken for this research suggests that multiple franchises use elements of their scores as branding tools. I argue that these melodies, which have often been referred to as leitmotifs in film music scholarship, should be described as something else: title tunes. It seems that over time, they come to represent not just one or two movies, but entire franchises. They also appear to possess a marketing value not necessarily present in leitmotifs. As such, I would argue these title tunes resemble much more sonic logos as described in the sonic branding world than leitmotifs. This thesis is an exploration of title tunes. My thesis focuses primarily on mainstream Hollywood film franchises from the 1960s onwards. Various case studies from different time periods and different movie genres are analysed to describe and understand this new category of promotional film music. This thesis first takes a historical look at the concept of title tunes, explaining how other sonic branding practices used in radio, television and cinema appear to have influenced the creation of title tunes. From the sample of films analysed for this thesis, I argue that title tunes share commonalities, yet the commonalities seem to vary slightly across movie genres. The analyses undertaken also suggest that title tunes are dynamic entities, that some title tunes are more complex than others (featuring multiple components), and that some franchises can feature more than one title tune. My interpretation of the data also suggests that these title tunes are used as emotional and nostalgic tools and that specific orchestrations and arrangements might carry additional emotional power. While the majority of this thesis explores the use of title tunes in films, their use in trailers and other commodities is discussed. Finally, I suggest how title tunes might change in the future and why certain franchises have omitted using such recurring motifs.

Dissonance Treatment in Fuging Tunes by Daniel Read from The American Singing Book and The Columbian Harmonist

Sims, Scott G. 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis treats Daniel Read's music analytically to establish style characteristics. Read's fuging tunes are examined for metric placement and structural occurrence of dissonance, and dissonance as text painting. Read's comments on dissonance are extracted from his tunebook introductions. A historical chapter includes the English origins of the fuging tune and its American heyday. The creative life of Daniel Read is discussed. This thesis contributes to knowledge of Read's role in the development of the New England Psalmody idiom. Specifically, this work illustrates the importance of understanding and analyzing Read's use of dissonance as a style determinant, showing that Read's dissonance treatment is an immediate and central characteristic of his compositional practice.

A Performance Guide to Heejo Kim's Choral Arrangements Based on Traditional Korean Folk Tunes and Rhythmic Patterns

Yi, Chung-han 05 1900 (has links)
Heejo Kim (1920-2001) is one of the most prominent Korean composers of the twentieth century. He is primarily known for his works that incorporate aspects of traditional Korean music. However, at the same time, his efforts in choral arrangements, especially of Korean folk tunes are highly acclaimed by professional choirs and conductors. The purpose of this study is to provide performance guidance on Heejo Kim's choral work, Bat-no-rae, by presenting his biographical background, discussing the use of traditional Korean rhythmic patterns (Jangdan) and modes, and the appropriate application of traditional ornamentations.

Devil in the Strawstack, Devil in the Details: A Comparative Study of Old-Time Fiddle Tune Transcriptions

Yeagle, Kalia 01 May 2020 (has links)
This thesis asks what transcriptions of old-time fiddle tunes might tell us about their underlying purposes and the nature of transcription. How could differing approaches to transcription reflect the intentions of the author, and what are those intentions? What does this suggest about how aural information is prioritized? Through a comparative analysis of three transcriptions of the same recording—Tommy Jarrell’s “Devil in the Strawstack”—this thesis examines how musical information is prioritized and how transcribers have adapted their methods to better reflect the nuances of old-time music. The three transcriptions come from Clare Milliner and Walt Koken (The Milliner-Koken Collection of American Fiddle Tunes), Drew Beisswenger (Appalachian Fiddle Tunes), and John Engle. The analysis of these transcriptions suggests new frameworks for interpreting old-time fiddling, further conversations about the possibilities and limitations of transcription, and provides insight into the underlying purposes of transcription.

Measurements of Angular Correlations in Minimum Bias Events and Preparatory Studies for Charged Higgs Boson Searches at the Tevatron and the LHC

Bélanger-Champagne, Camille January 2011 (has links)
Studies of minimum bias events at colliders probe the behavior of QCD in the non-perturbative regime. The phenomenology of events in this regime is described by empirical models that take many parameters, which all need to be tuned to the observed data. Measurements based on angular correlations between the highest transverse momentum charged particle track and the other charged particle tracks in collision events can, because of their robustness against experimental and detector effects, be a component of the tuning inputs for the models. We measure such observables in a variety of pseudorapidity ranges and at many center-of-mass energies at DØ and ATLAS. We observe that such observables are poorly described by current models and tunes that are used to produce simulated event samples, making them valuable information for the tuning process. The Matrix Element method is a powerful analysis tool to extract precise measurements from data samples of limited statistics. We have investigated the potential of the Matrix Element method to measure the mass of the charged Higgs in the exclusive decay H±→τ±ν→e±+3ν when produced in top quark decays at the Tevatron, with emphasis on the construction of transfer functions in the τ decay chain. We concluded that the τ decay chain can be successfully parametrized via a transfer function and that the method has the potential to provide an accurate charged Higgs mass measurement in this channel. Triggering on τ leptons is a key component for many beyond the Standard Model searches at ATLAS, such as the search for the charged Higgs boson. Events containing Z bosons can be used to measure the efficiency of the ATLAS τ hadronic-decay trigger. We have used a tag-and-probe method on simulated Z boson decays to 2 τ leptons where one decays to a μ while the other decays hadronically. The μ is used as the tag and the τ side is probed. We demonstrated that the efficiency of the τ hadronic-decay trigger can be accurately measured with this method using the first 100 pb-1 of ATLAS data. / Felaktigt tryckt som Digital Comprehensive Summaries of Uppsala Dissertations from the Faculty of Science and Technology 732

Lundgren, Tommy January 2022 (has links)
In this work, I create new tunes to investigate and convey the characteristics of different tune types in Swedish folk music, which can be considered as etudes. Etudes can be exercises intended to provide an opportunity to teach an instrumental art, a common form in western art music but not at all as established in Swedish folk music, where there is no equally formalized schooling. Based on descriptive studies and my own analysis of a selection of tune types, I have with creation as a method developed an interpretation of what I examine where the interpretation and tune has emerged iteratively, in what can be considered a qualitative and exploratory research process. The aim has been to imitate the traditional melodies with a focus on stylistically characteristic features, but where the tunes / etudes should at the same time be able to stand on their own artistically. In the process, I have evaluated and partly developed new composition methods and learning methods in the view of what had creative potential. The work describes different methods for creation in folk music and the creative potential in different methods is discussed in the light of the experiences from the project. / <p><strong>Rättvikspolska av Tommy Lundgren</strong> - Tommy Lundgren, fiol</p><p><strong>Farfars Reinlender av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- Tommy Lundgren, fiol - Fanny Källström, basfiol - Ingrid Rodebjer, fiol</p><p><strong>Vals av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- Tommy Lundgren, fiol</p><p><strong>Drill-Experiment av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- Tommy Lundgren, fiol</p><p><strong>Kungsgården av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- Tommy Lundgren, fiol - Fanny Källström, fiol</p><p><strong>Orsapolska, Orsapolska2 av Tommy Lundgren</strong> - Tommy Lundgren, fiol</p><p><strong>Triolpolska av Tommy Lundgren, Porland (trad)</strong> - Tommy Lundgren, fiol</p><p><strong>Springlek och Finnskogspols av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- </p><p>Tommy Lundgren, fiol - Alice Evensen Landström, fiol - Albin Myrin, klarinett</p><p><strong>Den sista brudmarschen av Tommy Lundgren </strong>- Tommy Lundgren, fiol - Fanny Källström, fiol - Ingrid Rodebjer, fiol</p>

Analysis and Categorization of Selected Musical Elements within Forty-three Solo Jazz Vocal "Standards" with Pedagogical Application to Repertoire Selection and the Teaching of Jazz Concepts in the Jazz Voice Lesson

Buchholz, Timothy C. 03 May 2010 (has links)
While the concept of teaching jazz style to vocal students is not a new one, previous materials written on the subject have not addressed two important aspects of this process. One is the concept of selecting jazz vocal solo repertoire that is both musically and vocally purposeful and appropriate for the student. The other is how to teach stylistic concepts that will apply to both current repertoire as well as songs the student will learn in the future. This doctoral essay provides both a categorized list of solo jazz vocal repertoire as well as strategies for introducing stylistic elements of jazz into the private-lesson setting. Through a systematic analysis of jazz vocal standards, a list of repertoire selections was categorized by rhythmic style, melodic range, melodic harmony, melodic rhythm, and harmonic content. In addition, the stylistic need to add syncopations to swing songs with non-syncopated melodies was addressed. Suggestions are included on how to implement this categorized list in the music selection process for students. Furthermore, this essay provides jazz voice teachers with strategies to efficiently incorporate important aspects of jazz styles such as rhythmic feel, song form, improvisation, and harmony into the lesson setting. By showing connections between these concepts and the literature that is being taught, students can become more competent and confident within the vocal and stylistic elements of the jazz idiom.

Duval, Jean 12 1900 (has links)
There are numerous examples of asymmetrical tunes in Québécois traditional music repertoire. Familiarly called “tounes croches” (crooked tunes) by musicians, those melodies do not respect the dominant square model consisting of 16 or 32 beats per section of a tune. Without being exclusive to the Quebec tradition, the performance of crooked tunes raises several ethnomusicological questions. The main objectives of this research were to study the musical “dialect” found in asymmetrical tunes, and to look at various issues concerning the performance of asymmetrical tunes by contemporary Québécois traditional musicians. After a chapter that presents an overview of the history, repertoire, playing styles, and performance contexts of Québécois traditional music, asymmetrical tunes are analyzed as a musical object. The comparison of square and asymmetrical versions of tunes, taken mainly from the historical recordings available on the Virtual Gramophone, yields a typology that considers three main categories of asymmetries: syntactical; morphological; and pulsative. Syntactical asymmetries include about twenty different types, all involving a lengthening or a shortening at various positions of a section. Asymmetries at the end of a section are the most common. Morphological asymmetries concern the macrostructure of tunes such as the playing order of sections or the number of their repeats. Asymmetrical tunes in the repertoire of other musical traditions from Europe and North America are also analyzed. This allows us to confirm the existence of a coherent asymmetrical musical system that is partly distinct in the case of the Québécois tradition. Origin, identity, aesthetic, and performing issues are next studied based on the results of a survey done among 18 traditional musicians. Those surveyed explain the origin of asymmetrical tunes by cognitive, choreographic, and artistic reasons. Their discourse indicates that the performance of asymmetrical tunes touches several dimensions of their identity such as national, regional, generational, contextual and individual. An aesthetic choice, a desire for freedom in creation, a link to the past, and a need of distinction from a standardized traditional music repertoire motivate contemporary Québécois traditional musicians to perpetuate and to enrich the repertoire of asymmetrical tunes.
