Development of an Autonomous Single-Point Calibration for a Constant Voltage Hot-Wire Anemometer

Murphy, Ryan 01 March 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Traditionally, the measurement of turbulence has been conducted using hot-wire anemometry. This thesis presents the implementation of a constant voltage hot-wire anemometer for use with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). A hot-wire calibration apparatus has been developed that is capable of operation inside a vacuum chamber and flow speeds up to 50 m/s. Hot-wires operated with a constant-voltage anemometer (CVA) were calibrated at absolute static pressures down to 26 kPa. A thermal/electrical model for a hot-wire and the CVA circuit successfully predicted the measured CVA output voltage trend at reduced pressure environments; however, better results were obtained when the Nusselt number was increased. A calibration approach that required only one measured flow speed was developed to allow autonomous calibrations of a CVA hot-wire. The single-point calibration approach was evaluated through comparison with the experimental data from the vacuum chamber over a range of 14-50 m/s and at pressures from 26 to 100 kPa. The thermal-electrical model was used to make predictions of CVA output voltage and the corresponding flow speed for conditions that could not be replicated within a laboratory. The first set of predictions were made for conditions from 7.5 to 100 kPa, at a constant temperature of 25⁰C, within a flight speed range of 40 to 150 m/s. Single-point calibrations were developed from these predictions. Additionally, the thermal-electrical model was used to predict hot-wire response for a change in temperature of 25⁰C at 26 kPa and the single-point calibration developed for the pressure range 7.5 to 100 kPa was tested for its ability to adjust. The temperature variation at a single pressure of 26 kPa proved that the single-point function was capable of adapting to off-standard temperatures with the largest deviations of +/- 7% in the mid-range velocities. With a temperature drop, the deviations were below 5%. The second set of thermal-electrical predictions involved conditions for altitude from 0 to 18 km at flow speeds from 40 to 150 m/s. A single-point calibration was developed for altitude conditions. Furthermore, to test the single-point calibration the thermal-electrical model was used to predict hot-re response for a temperature variation of 25⁰C at 18 km. The single-point calibration developed for altitude proved that it was capable of adjusting to a temperature variation of 25⁰C with maximum deviations of about 5% at mid-range velocities. It is proposed that the single-point calibration approach could be employed for CVA measurements with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS) to allow hot-wire data to be acquired autonomously during flight tests.

Effects of Tackification Agents on Room Temperature Epoxy Mechanical Properties

Murray, Garen B. 14 June 2022 (has links)
When laying up dry composite materials and aligning the fibers in the appropriate directions it can be a challenge due to the dryness of the fiber and mold design. Several commercial products are available to help fix plies to molds keeping the proper fiber orientation depending upon mold geometry. Prepreg and wet layups do not have this problem due to the inherent inclusion of a matrix in their manufacturing, dry materials have no added epoxy at the time of layup and are therefore in need of assistance maintain position. The purpose of this research is to determine if Super 77™ or EPON™ 2002 increases or decreases mechanical properties of the neat resin and composite laminates; if the increase or decrease is dependent upon the type of epoxy, and if the amount of applied tackifier can be optimized towards a high or low application quantity to minimize any detrimental effects to mechanical properties. Each tackification agent was applied in high and low concentrations to eight composite panels, with two control panels. The EPON™ was applied manually and set with heat exposure while the Super 77™ was sprayed from an aerosol can. The Super 77™ plies were stacked and pressed by hand while the EPON™ plies were stacked and ironed together to create panels, which were then infused with one of two room temperature infusion epoxies, MVS 610 or INF 114. The panels were then cut to specimen size for testing. Neat resin specimens were cast in silicone molds with high and low concentrations of tackifiers and allowed to cure for 12 hours at room temp, then heated to 60° C for 8 Both Super 77™ and EPON™ 2002 reduced the SBS for both epoxies, but Super 77™ reduced the short beam shear more than EPON™ 2002. The modulus of the neat resin cast specimens with high concentration were between 0 to 20% lower than neat resin with no tackifier; the tensile strength was increased for those specimens with Super 77™ and lower for those with EPON™ 2002. Similarly, the Charpy test resulted in higher values for Super 77™ than for EPON™ 2002. The effects of Super 77™ and EPON™ 2002 are complex and varied depending on application concentration, resin, and tackifier type; but the addition of any tackifier reduces mechanical properties from non-tackified laminates.

An Investigation Into the SiO2 Impregnation of Spruce Wood Under Vacuum Conditions for Engineering Applications

Lemaire-Paul, Mathieu 27 October 2022 (has links)
Wood is a widely used construction material that has many advantageous properties, and some drawbacks. These drawbacks are mainly associated with the porous vascular structure of wood that makes it a high water-absorbent material. In addition, wood’s properties alter substantially with respect to the moisture content. Amongst the treatment techniques that limit the water uptake capacity of wood, vacuum-aided impregnation has exhibited promising results. However, little research has explored the effect of key parameters (such as the vacuum pressure) on the effectiveness of the impregnation. This study aims to optimize the performance of SiO2 impregnation of spruce wood under vacuum pressures. The main objective of this research is to overcome wood’s weakness by reducing its water uptake capacity through a vacuum-aided impregnation technique and study its effect on the physico-mechanical properties of wood under dry and saturated conditions. The study was conducted in two parts. In the first part, wood samples underwent impregnation under atmospheric and three vacuum pressures. Density measurements, water uptake tests, microscopy examination, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis were conducted on non-treated and SiO2-treated samples. Quantitative and qualitative analyses demonstrated that SiO2 impregnation performed under -90 kPa was able to effectively enhance the wood’s properties compared to the other conditions. The SiO2 impregnation under high vacuum pressure demonstrated an effective increase in the density of the wood and achieved a significant reduction in the water uptake capacity. The analysis of the wood’s viscoelastic properties revealed that SiO2 impregnation under atmospheric and vacuum conditions triggered two different reinforcing mechanisms: a solid film, causing stick-slip oscillation, and particle diffusion, causing particle-particle and particle-lumen wall friction, respectively. For the second part, characterization methods such as Impact test, DMA, SEM, EDS, Porosity, and SAXS tests were conducted on non-treated and -90 kPa treated spruce wood samples in dry, saturated, and submerged states in order to reveal the synergistic effect of the SiO2 impregnation pressure and water uptake on the wood’s properties. The results showed that high vacuum impregnation pressure has a significant positive reinforcing effect on the wood’s properties. It increased the impact resistance of wood in dry and saturated conditions. A high vacuum impregnation was able to overcome the softening effect of water and caused a significant increase in the Storage modulus by strengthening the wood’s vascular structure, which accordingly increased the wood’s capacity to absorb energy. High vacuum impregnation was also able to counteract the plasticizing effect of water and significantly increased the Loss modulus by increasing the internal friction in the wood with the diffusion of the nanoparticles in the wood’s cell walls and vascular structure. This phenomenon increased the wood's capacity to absorb and dissipate energy under dry and submerged conditions.

Формирование заряженных микро- и нанодоменных стенок в монокристаллах ниобата лития с модифицированной проводимостью : магистерская диссертация / Formation of charged micro- and nanodomain walls in single crystals of lithium niobate with modified conductivity

Pryakhina, V. I., Пряхина, В. И. January 2014 (has links)
The formation of the micro- and nanodomain structures during polarization reversal has been studied in single crystal lithium niobate with inhomogeneously modified conductivity. It is well known that the vacuum annealing and plasma-source ion irradiation of the lithium niobate crystals leads to sufficient increase of the bulk conductivity due to out-diffusion of the oxygen from the sample surface. Creation of layers with modified conductivity leads to inhomogeneous distribution of applied electric field in bulk of ferroelectric crystals. Polarization reversal in such a crystals permits to localize charged domain walls in the bulk. Methods of creation of charged domain walls can be used for the construction of the waveguide structures, optical modulators and resonators. The main conclusions of the work: 1) It was shown that plasma-source ion irradiation and vacuum annealing leads to inhomogeneous change of absorption and increase of the conductivity, which can be attributed to the out-diffusion of oxygen and lithium segregation in the surface layer of crystal. 2) Inhomogeneous distribution of electric field in the bulk of modified crystals leads to significant decrease of switched layer thickness. 3) Effect of formation and growth of non-through domains with charged domain walls has been revealed. 4) Analysis of switching current by modified Kolmogorov-Avraami formula permit to determine mobility of domain wall and threshold filed of polarization reversal.

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy in the Vacuum-Ultraviolet Wavelength Regime for the Application in Planetary Exploration

Kubitza, Simon 22 April 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigates the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with detection in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral range for in-situ space exploration. For LIBS, a pulsed laser is tightly focused onto the sample, thereby ablating material and exciting a luminous plasma. The atoms and ions contained in the plasma radiate light of characteristic wavelengths, which can be analysed with spectrometers. The spectral analysis allows to identify the chemical elements in the plasma, which are assumed to be representative for the elements contained in the sample. With LIBS, all elements can be detected. However, especially the non-metal elements are challenging to detect because their strongest lines are located in the VUV spectral range, i.e. below 200 nm, which is often not investigated. Detection in this range brings its own challenges, since large parts of the radiation spectrum are absorbed by the atmosphere surrounding the sample. On celestial bodies without an atmosphere, such as the Moon, the ambient conditions are well suited for VUV-LIBS analyses. In such a scenario, a better detectability for the otherwise challenging elements C, Cl, H, N, O, P and S is expected compared to LIBS in the usually employed detection range above 200 nm. The results shown in this thesis indicate that VUV-LIBS is promising for the improved detection of light elements such as S and Cl in a lunar context. However, more extensive studies with an optimized set-up are necessary to properly assess the true capabilities of the method and to further reduce the detection limits. Although emission from the most abundant chemical elements in geological samples, Al, Si and O, could be reliably detected in all samples containing them, VUV-LIBS might in the end be best used in combination with LIBS in the UV-VIS range or with other analytical techniques, because the major rock forming elements Ca, Na and Mg hardly show emission lines in the VUV spectral range.

Technology is presented as an important subject in the preschool curriculum. Many preschool teachers lack knowledge of technology. In the study I give an example of a teaching activity. The study is an example of a design-based study, and it is based on an activity that I have planned and conducted with preschool children. The purpose of the study was to find out how the younger children interact with a vacuum cleaner as a technical system. To find it out I use a qualitative method. The children were video recorded as they engaged with the activity, and then I observed the videotape and transcribed it. The result was presented in different categories with subheadings of those situa-tions that happened. The situations were analysed and connected to earlier science and theories. The result showed that the children showed a lot of understanding for the vacuum cleaner, their understanding was different depending on if the child was one or three years old. A three year old showed how to start the vacuum cleaner, and an understanding for the function and the construction. A one year old showed most understanding for how the vacuum cleaner looks like and the construction. The result also showed that the children explored through their bodies and different senses. The children showed that they experienced through hearing by cover their ears. They jumped over the vacuum cleaner and tried to vacuum different objects. The children explore and try new ways to use the vacuum cleaner.

Effects of Accelerated Aging on SiO₂-Treated Wood Samples

Beuthe, Callisto Ariadne 18 December 2023 (has links)
Wood is a viscoelastic composite material that has been historically prominent in the construction of buildings and continues to see widespread use. When used for exterior applications, wood is exposed to dynamic environmental conditions and can degrade if left untreated. Previous research by Lemaire-Paul et al. (2022) has proven that vacuum impregnation of the wood cell structure with a silica (SiO₂) nanoparticle colloid under a vacuum pressure of -90 kPa can enhance the viscoelastic properties, increase the density, and reduce the water uptake of white spruce wood. However, the behaviour of SiO₂-treated wood under different environmental conditions over time has yet to be fully explored. This research aims to examine the durability and performance of SiO₂-treated spruce wood samples subjected to accelerated aging conditions under high temperature and humidity as well as freeze-thaw cycling. Spruce wood samples were treated with 40% SiO₂ nanoparticle colloid under a vacuum pressure of -90 kPa. One set was placed in a hydrolytic aging chamber at 90°C and 80% RH. Another set was placed in a freeze-thaw cycling chamber that cycled from 25°C to -18°C and back at a rate of 6 cycles per day. The samples were removed at regular intervals and thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensiometry, X-Ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy were performed. When compared to the results obtained from a set of non-treated samples, it was found that the SiO₂-treated samples exhibited lower water uptake values that stabilized over time, as well as a lower rate of decrease in peak cellulose degradation temperatures under hydrolytic aging and a slight increase in peak cellulose degradation temperature over time under freeze-thaw aging. The effects of both aging conditions on the viscoelastic properties of the samples were also found to be insignificant. Both types of samples under both types of aging also exhibited an increase in crystallinity over time. These results indicate that the durability and properties of wood can be improved through nano-SiO₂ impregnation as the material remains relatively stable when subjected to high temperature and humidity conditions as well as freeze-thaw cycling over time.
