Outsider Buddhism : a study of Buddhism and Buddhist education in the U.S. prison system

McIvor, Paul 28 November 2011 (has links)
Buddhist prison outreach is a relatively recent development, in the United States of America and elsewhere, and has yet to be chronicled satisfactorily. This thesis traces the physical, legal and social environment in which such activities take place and describes the history of Buddhist prison outreach in the USA from its earliest indications in the 1960s to the present day. The mechanics of Buddhist prison outreach are also examined. Motivations for participating in Buddhist prison outreach are discussed, including Buddhist textual supports, role models and personal benefits. This paper then proposes that volunteers active in this area are members of a liminal communitas as per Victor Turner and benefit from ‘non-player’ status, as defined by Ashis Nandy. The experiences of the inmates themselves is beyond the scope of this thesis. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

Wenkriteria vir konvensionele landgevegte

Wagner, William John 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study is to develop models for the efficient prediction of the outcome of a land battle. The study is confined to conventional warfare at the tactical level. The first step was to identify the variables that may determine victory. Thirty such variables enjoying the support of various military historians and philosophers were selected. The hundred-battle data set, consisting of coded data for a hundred twentieth-century battles, was compiled. The thirty variables were encoded for each combatant. Since the outcome and most of the prediction variables are binary but a few are continuous, ordinary linear regression could not be used and several statistical and other techniques were evaluated. Logistic regression was found to be the best. A formalized development and selection process was applied to a number of broad model classes. These were 1 prediction models with one-sided sub-models without combat posture and with (without) opponent data 2 prediction models with one-sided sub-models with combat posture and with (without) opponent data 3 prediction models with two-sided sub-models without combat posture and with opponent data. The process provided several very good models and the following were selected. Without opponent data. A one-sided sub-model without combat posture, utilizing a discriminator was selected. It determines the outcome with a sensitivity of 85%. However, it only predicts victory or a draw, defeat or a draw. With opponent data. A one-sided sub-model without combat posture was selected. It predicts the outcome of battle by comparing the results of the two opponents. This model vishowed a sensitivity of 83,8%. Several statistical and military scientific conclusions followed, the most important being that the chosen models can accurately predict battle outcome or post facto determine the outcome. The models can also be used to analyze battles. In this role they confirm the importance of maneuver warfare and good leadership. The results of this study can be applied in military science, military philosophy and war gaming. The work fuses military philosophy with statistical analysis, is a first in the field and offers the possibility of breaking out of the mind-set of personal views and biases prevalent in military science. The method as such can be applied to different data bases representing war at other levels or with other technologies. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D.Phil. (Philosophy)

Překlady Jaroslava Vrchlického z románských literatur. / Jaroslav Vrchlickýs Translations from the French and Italy Literature.

VICIÁNOVÁ, Klára January 2014 (has links)
In my master's thesis I inquire into Jaroslav Vrchlický's translation of French poetry. In five chapters I analyse Vrchlický's translations of the poems by the Parnasists José-Maria de Heredia, Sully Prudhomme, Leconte de Lisle and François Coppée; the fifth is the romantic author Victor Hugo. The analyses are preceded by a bibliographic-descriptive part, an overview of Vrchlický's studies related to the poet in question and reception of Vrchlický's translations in contemporary periodicals. The summarizing chapters describe Vrchlický's translation method and the relationship of F. X. Šalda as the leading figure of contemporary literary criticism to Jaroslav Vrchlický. A substantial part of the work is a bibliographical index of Vrchlický's translations of French poetry published in books and journals as well as a list of his critical studies. As information source we have used the digitalized card catalogue Retrobi available online at the website of the Institute of Czech Literature, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The research show and analyze the Victor Moreira’s costume creations, for the Passion of Christ‘s play. From his two after death published books, L’Europe: genèse d’une civilisation (1999) and Honneur et Patrie (1996), the intention is, first of all, to map the Europe’s concept and then the arising of a Christian country, going through the European country, to finally the strengthening of an ideal French’s country, after the XVII Century. All this subject matter proposed by Lucien Febvre was taken as a reflex of the context in which Europe, specially France was living at that time, with the German invasion in French’s soil. Carrying out his studies, Lucien Febvre has used historical psychology, providing in all his courses the “mental outillage” concept to map that Europe, but specially his “tragical” France

Faria, Louise Scoz Pasteur de January 2014 (has links)
Esses esforços me dirigem a estudar o self e o social como processos interativos. / @ Hebe Camargo, known as "Hebe from the Internet", is considered by many as one of the main Brazilian webcelebrities. / Abstract: In this thesis I have analyzed the reception of the book the Brazil Pittoresco (Picturesque Brazity, produced by the French Charles Ribeyrolles and Victor Frond (1859-1861), and considered by the critic Alexandre Eulálio as one of the "highest moments of our 19th century iconography". The search on periodicals of the end of the 1850's and the beginning of the following decade has revealed new data about the historical context of the book's publication and, moreover, about its importance to the artistic Brazilian realm. The book presents a series of images that associate photography with lithography, two technical innovations that relate to modernity. Repercussion wise, two letters from the writer Victor Hugo to Ribeyrolles, amply publicized back then, lead us into reflecting upon the relevant role assumed by the book regarding the 19th century Brazilian artistic realm and upon its importance as a liberal and abolitionist work. Conceived in order to represent Brazil in the 1862's London Universal Exhibition, the book produced a huge impact on its times, be it because of its text or because of its illustrations. Among the lithographs, which were produced in France from Frond's photographs, we call attention upon the Rio de Janeiro's landscape series and the one that records slave work at haciendas in the Fluminense region. The latter is the most studied nowadays. The Brazil Pittoresco images, which were amply publicized, gained autonomy and brought about formal innovations that proved to be important for the production of painters and photographers of the period.

Vieira, Bruno Vitor de Farias 03 March 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / "Public Archeology" is one of the ever-growing segments since its inception in the mid-1970s. Since then, it has become part of debates, alternating debates on the social role of the archaeologist, preservation of sites, Insertion of society in scientific works and the future of this science / discipline. Throughout contradictions regarding the definition of its "public", the theorists of this segment have emphasized that "all Archeology, regardless of its thematic clipping or theoretical-methodological choices, should be, in essence, public" (CARVALHO, FUNARI, 2007). Thus, from the understanding of an archeology of the state: the "defender of the patrimony" and the "representative of society", to Archeology of "people, the public and the public" (idem). It is connected to this discussion the insertion of the context of the Archeology of Slavery in the southeast of Piauí and how these relations, at present, composse the memory and local history about this quotidian of the past and its resonance in the present. Following these reflections, this research aims to present a study under the bias of Collaborative Archeology, with the inhabitants of the community of Lagoa de São Vitor, located in the southeast of Piauí, in the identification and characterization of the constituent spaces of the former "Complexo Produtivo Fazenda São Victor". The results comprised the localization of six social spaces between the various actors who settled there: the headquarters, the corral, the slave quarters, the lagoon, the slave graveyard and the village of freed slaves, these places were characterized by from the interpretation of science and popular wisdom of the community, built on collaborative relationships of mutual respect. / Laranjeiras, SE
