Hoopvol en fiksie vir jong volwassenes (FJV) as selfstandige genre binne die Afrikaanse letterkunde

Hierdie mini-verhandeling ondersoek die ontwikkeling van die ouer jeugboek in Afrikaans, sedert die politieke veranderinge in die negentigerjare. Daar word aangetoon dat die einde van Apartheid die einde van die veilige voorskryfmark vir die Afrikaanse jeugboek beteken het. Daar word ook aangetoon dat die ontwikkeling en die geskiedenis van die Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugboek hand aan hand met die ontwikkeling van die Afrikaner se politieke geskiedenis geloop het. Daar was 'n verdieping en ontwikkeling in die ouer jeugboek in Afrikaans sedert 1994, waarvan nog nie formeel kennis geneem word nie. Dié boeke word nog gemaklik in die kinder- en jeugboekkategorie ingedeel, waar baie van hulle nie sonder meer tuishoort nie. Volwassenelesers neem gewoonlik net van hulle kennis as hierdie boeke publisiteit weens "omstrede" kwessies ontvang of in ander media soos rolprente verwerk word. Daar is aangetoon dat die formele klassifikasie van die ouer jeugboek baie van hierdie boeke van die erkenning en verkoopsyfers wat hulle verdien, weerhou. Daar is gevolglik steeds 'n gebrekkige belangstelling vanuit akademiese geledere in die Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur. Ander redes wat die ontwikkeling van die ouer jeugboek in Afrikaans belemmer, soos die invloed van indirekte sensuur op skrywers en die konserwatiewe kriteria wat deur voorskryfkomitees vir die Afrikaanse voorgeskrewe boek neergelê word, word uitgewys. Verder word Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugboekskrywers eers as "ware" skrywers beskou sodra hulle 'n boek vir volwassenes geskryf het. Die studie ondersoek voorts die Amerikaanse "young adult" (YA)-genre en daar word aangetoon aan die hand van 'n ontleding van vyf Afrikaanse jeugromans dat hulle gemaklik in só 'n genre tuishoort, naamlik fiksie vir jong volwassenes (FJV). Die voordele van FJV vir ouer kinders word uitgewys en daar word aangetoon dat hierdie boeke anders bemark moet word en 'n ander staanplek op boekwinkel- en biblioteekrakke verdien. Seneca, De Providentia. Ein Kommentar. De Providentia ist ein fiktiver Dialog, den Seneca mit dem als Adressaten seiner Epistulae Morales bekannten Freund Lucilius führt. Im Verlauf dieses "Dialogs" versucht Seneca seinem Freund und Schüler die Frage nach dem Leid, das dem vir bonus widerfährt, obwohl die Welt von der göttlichen providentia gelenkt wird, zu beantworten. Es handelt sich also um das Theodizeeproblem, das Seneca hier auf der Basis einer Frage des Lucilius zu lösen versucht, die im Verlauf des Texts 7-mal wiederkehrt, jeweils dem Gedankenfortschritt angepasst oder ihn auch manchmal bewirkend. Der Kommentar besteht aus zwei Teilen, einem fortlaufenden in Form einer interpolierenden Paraphrase, und einem Einzelkommentar, in dem die während der Arbeit angefallenen Einzelbeobachtungen gesammelt sind. Unter interpolierender Paraphrase verstehe ich dabei eine behutsame Paraphrase, in der besonders die bei Seneca oft unklar bleibenden logischen Verknüpfungen hergestellt werden sollen. Dazu ist es oft nötig, andere Senecastellen zur Erklärung zu benutzen. Ich habe in der Regel auf das Heranziehen weiterer Quellen verzichtet. Denn die Überlieferungslage, vor allem der philosophischen Quellen, ist zum großen Teil desolat, und Seneca selbst hält – in epist. 84 – ein Werk dann für besonders gelungen, wenn man die zahlreichen darin eingeflossenen Quellen nicht mehr erkennen kann, weil sie nahtlos in den eigenen Text übergegangen sind. Dies ist der erste deutschsprachige Kommentar zu De Providentia. Er unterscheidet sich von den vorhandenen Kommentaren in italienischer1 und englischer2 Sprache dadurch, dass in ihm der Verlauf des gesamten Texts in den Blick genommen wird. Insofern stellt er eher eine Strukturanalyse dar, wie sie schon von Grimal3 und Abel4 vorgelegt worden ist. Grimal hat später selbst gesagt5, dass es sich bei seiner Arbeit mehr um die Bemühung um den Aufriss handle, der sich an die Regeln der zeitgenössischen Rhetorik halte, während Abel eine Untersuchung der Tiefenstruktur vorgenommen habe. Man kann meinen Kommentar als eine auf der Untersuchung Grimals basierende Strukturanalyse verstehen, die den Gedankenverlauf des Senecatexts nachvollzieht und sich dabei mit den von Abel zu De Providentia präsentierten Thesen auseinander setzt. Taxation consequences of providing shares to employees through a trust

People make a company. Their expertise and talents, efficiency and job performance determine the company‘s profitability and growth. The long-term retention of employees is of the utmost importance, as these employees have a wealth of knowledge about the company, its industry and the products or services being sold. Businesses have created plans to retain employees for a maximum period of time. These ideas include cash bonuses, phantom share schemes, and providing the employee with shares in the business. This study will look at such ideas in general, and specifically investigate the different ways of providing employees with shares in the business. There are different ways of providing the employee with shares in a business. This can include loans (including interest-free loans) to the employee from the employer, loans to the employee from a financial institution, employee share ownership plans, company share option plans and providing the employee with shares in the business through an employee share trust. Each of these methods attracts certain taxes such as income tax, capital gains tax and secondary tax on companies or dividend tax. The aim of this study is to use a case study approach, critically analysing an anonymous company providing its employees with shares in the company through an employee share trust, and will specifically investigate the different tax consequences of each transaction taking place in the trust AFRIKAANS : Werknemers is 'n maatskappy se belangrikste bate. Energy efficiency : the regulatory framework for SADC and South Africa / Rachel Lekunze Kungwe

Energy is the main driving force behind all human activities. Energy use is blamed for its contribution to greenhouse gas, environmental degradation among others. Energy efficiency has been identified as an important tool to address these issues. Recognising the important role of energy efficiency, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) introduced policy measures to address energy efficiency at both regional and national levels. South Africa (a member state of SADC) followed by introducing policies, legislation, tax incentives and voluntary measures such as SANS standards and ISO 50001 to address energy use via energy efficiency. The aim of this study is to assess South Africa’s framework pertaining to energy efficiency and determine whether they correspond to the SADC energy frameworks. In this study, it is indicated that energy efficiency does not have a universally acceptable definition. SADC’s frameworks pertaining to energy efficiency are quite vague compared to South Africa’s policy framework. South Africa’s policies, legal frameworks and voluntary instruments correspond with the SADC frameworks and even go beyond these frameworks. It is recommended that SADC’s frameworks should specify measures of attaining energy efficiency within its mandated tools, urge member states to develop legislation as well as voluntary measures as means of attaining energy efficiency. The South African Minister of Energy on the other hand, should fulfil the mandate of the Electricity Regulation Act and the National Energy Act by enacting regulations pertaining to energy efficiency. Depictions of diversity in the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree within a higher education context / Jean Henry Blignaut

In this study I explored depictions of diversity in the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course at North-West University in South Africa. South Africa was and is still is facing the challenge of inequalities such as getting access to higher education institutions that were previously dominated by a white Christian Afrikaans-speaking group. The first democratic election in South Africa in 1994 brought about structural changes in society. These structural changes included the merging of tertiary education institutions such as colleges of education, technikons and universities. In view of South Africa’s history of divisions and injustices such as patriarchy, mono-religiosity and mono-ethnicism, it therefore seemed valuable to explore how diversity is depicted in higher education institutions. In 2012 a task team was set up by the dean of the Faculty of Education Sciences at the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University. This team investigated how diversity was expressed in selected study guides of the undergraduate BEd degree programme offered at the Potchefstroom Campus to contact mode students. This study identified the need to explore how diversity is depicted at a postgraduate degree level. The primary purpose of my research was to explore empirically the extent to which diversity nuances of gender, religion and ethnicity are depicted in the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course. This involved exploring the depictions of diversity in study guides of the modules presented in the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course. In addition, I also looked into the depictions of diversity by lecturers presenting modules and students enrolled for the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course. The study was situated in a critical theory paradigm and utilised a qualitative research design with a critical ethnographic methodology. Three sets of data generation methods were employed: document research, semi-structured one-on-one interviews and focus group interviews. The two campuses of North-West University offering this programme were purposefully selected as my research environments. I employed purposeful sampling, and study guides utilised by lecturers and students in the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course formed the sample. Lecturers presenting modules and students enrolled for the Curriculum Studies programme of the BEdHons degree course were participants. Critical discourse analysis, underpinned by Fairclough’s (1992) three-dimensional conception of discourse, was the method of analysis. The conclusions were derived predominantly from the diversity nuances acculturation and rationality. Some of the conclusions were also derived from diversity as a nuance but to a limited extent. The conclusions vary from depictions on the chosen discourse of diversity, depictions relating to curricula and the multifaceted aspect of diversity. With regard to the depictions on the chosen discourses of diversity, it was evident that some lecturer participants were only fostering the aspects gender, religion and ethnicity of certain cultural groups, which caused some groups to be invisible. Student participants’ depictions were ideologically embedded as they preferred not to engage with diversity to eliminate certain issues. Lecturer participants also tended to include disadvantaged minority/majority groups to such a limited extent that they were almost non-existent. Furthermore, it appeared that lecturer participants excluded diversity to foster inclusion. Separation was also emphasised by student participants in that they were being forced to engage with diversity rather than wanting to or having a choice to engage with diversity or not. The purpose of this research was to investigate and describe the experience of lesbian parents and their adolescents regarding the adolescents’ development of a sense of self in the lesbian home, in order to compile guidelines that can provide help to these parents. The subject was investigated from both a pastoral base theory (normative perspective) and a Gestalt theoretical perspective (paradigmatic perspective). A qualitative approach was followed for the purpose of this study, with semi-structured interviewing with the adolescents and their parents respectively. Adolescents were also requested to make collages that served as an additional data gathering method. The sample group consisted of five adolescent boys and four adolescent girls, some of who were siblings, from six lesbian families respectively. Seven of the twelve parents were biological mothers from previous heterosexual marriages, and the remaining five women had no children of their own. From the literature review and the empirical results of this study, it appears that there are certain positive as well as negative aspects of a lesbian home that influence an adolescents sense of self. In lesbian homes where both parents are involved with the adolescents, share household duties equally and have a quality relationship with each other as well as with the adolescents, the adolescents are generally well-adapted, happy and able to handle challenges in order to develop a healthy sense of self. The positive influence that Christian religious certainty has on the overall development of the adolescents and on the sense of self, was confirmed through this study. On the other hand, adolescents experience the following aspects as challenging and impeding in their development of a healthy sense of self: Conflict and criticism from the companion parents are humiliating and destructive for the adolescents. Stigmatising, teasing and rejection from the hetero-normative society, as a result of their parents’ sexual orientation, appear to be the largest obstacle in their psychosocial development, which also influences their sense of self directly, because they react in a shy, negative and evasive way to the stigmatisation and withdraw themselves from situations that can be painful and humiliating. From the research findings, it appears that the absence of a father figure and financial tension in lesbian families are impeding to the adolescents’ healthy development of a sense of self. Due to the complexity of the aspects that can have a negative influence or impede on an adolescent’s healthy development of a sense of self within the lesbian parent relationship, the researcher realised that professional help, support and guidance might be necessary for some of the lesbian parents and adolescents in order to promote the adolescents’ development of a sense of self and the establishment of a unique identity. At the end of this study, the researcher was able to compile guidelines for lesbian parents as well as pastoral counsellors to help and guide them in their support to adolescents in order to enable them develop a healthy sense of self. / PhD (Pastoral Studies), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
