The Rise of Regional Hegemons: Assessing Implications for the International System through a Neo-realist Perspective

Linn, Nicole Whitney 10 February 2012 (has links)
Never before have developing nations been able to compete at the international level, both economically and militarily. But, we are currently in an age where developing nations, such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China, are able to develop so rapidly that they are able to excel within the international economy, which allows for an increased investment in military and technological capabilities. Consequently, these rapidly developing nations are able to influence the international system. To see how much of an effect these rapidly developing nations are having within the international system, they will be measured against 5 indicators that correlate with becoming a rising regional hegemon, a feature of a multi-polar system. The multi-polar international system that we see emerging is contrary to Kenneth Waltz's assertion that a multi-polar international system is unstable, and a bi-polar international system is preferred. New global conditions indicate that Waltz's analysis may not stand the test of time. / Master of Arts

Aspectos intertextuais, formais e de humor nas Valsas Humorísticas de Alberto Nepomuceno / Intertextual, formal and humorous aspects on Alberto Nepomuceno\'s Valsas Humorísticas

Manfrinato, Ana Carolina 15 March 2019 (has links)
Alberto Nepomuceno handles four topical styles in order to evoke humor in his Valsas Humorísticas Op. 22 for piano and orchestra: the waltz, concertante, pianistic and pianeiro (related to popular pianists from Rio de Janeiro) styles. Meaning tropification of these styles, namely, their overlap creates musical humor. By means of these intertextual elements, present research had the intent to show references related to the topical vienense waltz (associated with Johan Strauss II and Joseph Lanner\'s waltzes) and compare them to Frédéric Chopin\'s Works composed after his stay in Vienna - in particular the Grande Valse Brillante, Op. 18 - and analogize them with the six Valsas Humorísticas. Medley format revealed itself as a peculiarity in this musical form and a common ground between the mentioned above waltzes. Chopin\'s compositions, in contrast, shows da capo ternary form as an example. Present thesis based its analysis on Klein (2005) in order to comprehend intertextuality as an aesthetical phenomenon, whose relations are given by the recipient\'s perception. McKee\'s studies (2012) were also took into analysis to understand the waltz genre as a topical music. Both medley format, seen as a compositional technique of do it yourself, and the overlapping of mentioned styles show that Valsas Humorísticas had progressive elements by the time they were created. Besides, present research shows the explicit intertextualities Nepomuceno performs when citing Strauss II\'s Blue Danube and Chopin\'s Minute Waltz and elucidates that both tropification of styles and usage of citations are mechanisms to create musical humor. Current thesis takes Casablancas (2014) studies in order to comprehend, verify and describe how humor manifests itself in music and how many musical elements evoke humor on Alberto Nepomuceno\'s Valsas Humorísticas.

Asymptotic autobiography : fairy tales as narrative map in the writing of Zelda Fitzgerald

McKetta, Elisabeth Sharp 19 January 2011 (has links)
When a writer, usually a woman, uses fairy tales as a veil through which to narrate a story of her life, I call this practice asymptotic autobiography. In mathematics, the asymptote is a straight line that a curve approaches increasingly closely, but never actually touches. I define “asymptotic autobiography” as a term for discussing any personal narrative that deliberately employs fiction in order to tell truth. In this inquiry, I examine the use of fairy tale language in giving voice to women writers’ autobiographical representations, using Zelda Fitzgerald’s novel and letters as the focus for my analysis. My research and critical analysis will examine how Save Me the Waltz, which Zelda Fitzgerald wrote while she was a psychiatric patient in the Phipps Clinic, uses fairy tales to provide a mapping of the many performances that autobiographical selfhood entails. By experimenting with open-ended fairy tale conventions instead of being limited by clinical truths, and by contextualizing her personal history in the realm of the imaginary, Fitzgerald removes her story from the psychiatric ward and places it safely in legend. The first three chapters of this dissertation show how, in sequence, the autobiographical self becomes free through the use of fairy tales in three stages: once the autobiographer has worked to separate herself from being bound by illness or clinical reality (Chapter One), she is free to make the decision of which self or selves she wishes to narrate and perform (Chapter Two); only once she has established her sense of self can the autobiographer then locate her plot, her map, and her narrative (Chapter Three). In Chapter Four, I offer an example of asymptotic autobiography in the form of a one-person play script that I wrote and performed about Zelda Fitzgerald’s life and hospitalization, using as a frame the fairy tale “The Swan Maiden.” This hybrid essay-performance combines the play script itself with personal writing of my own in which I describe the difficulties I had approaching and performing the rich material of Zelda’s life. / text

La Belle au Bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) Tchaikovsky-Pletnev and Stravinsky's Petrouchka: a study of piano transcriptions comprising performances and analyses.

Yang, Vicky (Chia-Yi) January 2005 (has links)
As the costs for mounting opera, ballet and orchestral concerts rise and as their audiences dwindle, piano transcriptions of works orchestrated for such concerts can be a viable way of disseminating the music more widely than if the music was presented only in its original form. With this in mind, it can be argued that piano transcriptions of music originally written for instrumental ensemble is still a viable form of musical expression, because the piano is still the most widely used medium for the performance of art music in the Western world. Transcriptions of instrumental and vocal music expand the listening audience for a composer's music while they also increase the repertoire of music for the piano for both amateurs and professionals. The CD recording has the aim of providing a reference on which to base an appreciation of Pletnev's work. As the orchestral score is quite well known, the differentiation created by Pletnev, and the quality of his work, can be immediately perceived by hearing the execution of his scores and being able to cross reference his reductions with the original score. Timing references for the piano score have been included to further facilitate this cross-referencing. This thesis comprises two parts: 1. A performance CD of Stravinsky's Petrouchka (1922 piano four-hand version) and Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty (1999 solo piano transcription by Mikhail Pletnev). This accounts for 75% of the thesis. 2. An exegesis, analysing selected portions of the orchestral score of Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty Op.66 and Pletnev's piano transcription suite, prefaced by an overview of piano transcriptions from Liszt to Pletnev. This accounts for 25% of the thesis. The exegesis argues that, while seeking to recreate the colour and drama of Tchaikovsky's orchestral score within the context of a virtuosic piano solo, Pletnev has managed to transcribe Tchaikovsky's score faithfully with minimal alterations.

Em complemento serão apresentadas informações sobre a trajetória de Radamés Gnattali como arranjador, bem como de outros arranjadores contemporâneos e antecessores à sua época, contribuindo com as pesquisas sobre o arranjo musical no Brasil, particularmente no início do século XX / Abstract: The present work investigates the song-waltz "Lábios que beijei" ("Lips that I kissed"), composed by J. Cascata (psedonym of Álvaro Nunes Filho, 1912-1961) and Leonel Azevedo (1908-1980) and recorded in 1937 by the company RCA Victor in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This recording was a great success and helped build the careers of his interpreter, the singer Orlando Silva (1915-1978), and his arranger, Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988). Given the success of this waltz-song, critics and historians emphasize some musical aspects by reference to the musical arrangement of Radamés Gnattali for this composition. It is through this context that our research is oriented and seeks to make a musical transcription and analysis of this arrangement. In addition, information will be displayed on the trajectory of Radamés Gnattali as an arranger, as well as other previous arrangers and contemporaries of his time, contributing to research on musical arrangement in Brazil, particularly in the early twentieth century / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

Balance-of-Power Theory and the Ethiopian-Somali Conflict of 1977- 1978

Ogundele, Ayodeji O. (Ayodeji Olusesi) 12 1900 (has links)
Balance-of-Power theory was tested by examining the 1977-1978 Ethiopian-Somali conflict and its outcome. The theory, according to Waltz (1979), claims to explain the international outcome arising from realpolitik or power politics, namely, the formation of balances of power. Given the close fit between the major developments leading to the eruption of conflict and the principal propositions of balance-of-power theory, the outcome of the conflict was expected to be consistent with that posited by the theory. This expectation was borne out by the study's finding which indicated that the conflict has produced a similar result. Confirmation of the theory was achieved by further subjecting the finding to the verification test established by Waltz.

Polaridade e polarização no século XXI : impactos políticos da transição demográfica

Ávila, Fabrício Schiavo January 2013 (has links)
The policy in the twenty-first century international system, will be impacted by changes in the demographic base of countries. At the same time, increases the need for States with access to advanced technologies, ie, high polarity, use of human resources for countries to maximize growth of power. The polarization process impacts of new alliances with countries. The use of force requires people to defend and guarantee the survival of the state in Anarchy. Especially in a war scenario with the systemic use of nuclear weapons which are the guarantors of conventional operations. Concomitantly, the number of people in the workforce is the cornerstone of nuclear deterrence policies of the states over the survivability of a second attack.

With this analysis, it seeks to understand modes of articulation between the field of documentary and animation, using elements of both as a possibility of self-representation in films that are related to the shared historic world. For this purpose, it develops a reflection on the establishment of different perspectives in the field of documentary studies and the ways available for animation to create representations. In addition, it dialogues with the various historical and conceptual approaches about the animated documentary, developed significantly over the past fifteen years. Finally, it develops a critical analysis of what Bill Nichols (1994) calls performative documentary and the considerations of Michael Renov (2004) about documentaries that deal with the autobiographical, to understand the animation as a way to put the director in history and establish a continuity with the past, weaving relationships between elements of documentary and animated images that provide other senses to the reported.
