Gestão de resíduos sólidos de serviço de saúde : estudo comparativos em unidade hospitalares de Aracaju/seCunha, Grasiela Freire da 22 February 2013 (has links)
The object of this research was to analyze the waste management of health services in hospitals located in the city of Aracaju/SE. Specifically, sought to describe the procedures for segregation, packaging, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and final disposal of the solid waste management, analyze the degree of officials knowledge of the hospitals on the management of such wastes and perform comparative analysis of management practices in hospitals RSS, verifying their compliance with Resolution No. 306/2004 of ANVISA. This is a descriptive and exploratory study, whose research strategy adopted was multiple case study. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured questionnaire application, on-site observation, with the help of script and document analysis. The research population consisted of 285 professionals from the clinical staff (doctors, nurses, technicians and nursing assistants) and hygienist of the three hospitals studied, defined by non-probability sampling by quotas. Data were analyzed with SPSS software, content analysis and triangulation of data. It was found that all healthcare facilities searched showed problems related to inadequate segregation of waste. The three hospitals surveyed have the same procedures with respect to segregation, packing, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and final disposal of the solid waste management. In two establishments, the locations used for external storage of waste do not meet current standards. Private hospitals had the solid waste management plan duly updated and structured and seek to meet current standards and their applicability correct. It was noted, however, that the respondents, in all hospitals, have low level of knowledge about issues related to the management of solid waste management held by health facilities. In general, it was found that establishments assessed implement a policy requiring training, using attractive and efficient mechanisms for training of professionals involved in the management of solid waste management. / O objeto central desta pesquisa é analisar a gestão dos resíduos sólidos de serviços de saúde (RSS) em unidades hospitalares localizadas na cidade de Aracaju/SE. Especificamente, busca: descrever os procedimentos de segregação, acondicionamento, coleta, armazenamento, transporte, tratamento e disposição final dos RSS; analisar o grau de conhecimento dos funcionários das unidades hospitalares sobre a gestão desses resíduos e efetuar análise comparativa das práticas de gestão dos RSS nas unidades hospitalares pesquisadas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritivo-exploratória, cuja estratégia de pesquisa adotada foi estudo de casos múltiplos. A coleta de dados foi realizada através de aplicação de questionário semiestruturado, observação in loco, com auxílio de roteiro e com análise de documentos. A população pesquisada é formada por 285 profissionais pertencentes à equipe clínica (médicos, enfermeiros, técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem) e higienizadores dos três hospitais analisados, definidos através da técnica de amostragem não probabilística por cotas. As técnicas utilizadas para a análise dos dados foram o software SPSS, a análise de conteúdo e a triangulação dos dados. Verificou-se que todas as unidades de saúde pesquisadas apresentaram problemas com relação à segregação inadequada dos resíduos. Os três hospitais pesquisados apresentam os mesmos procedimentos com relação à segregação, acondicionamento, coleta, armazenamento, transporte, tratamento e disposição final dos RSS. Em dois estabelecimentos, os locais utilizados para o armazenamento externo dos resíduos não atendem às normas vigentes. Os hospitais privados apresentaram o PGRSS devidamente atualizado e estruturado e procuram atender às normas vigentes e sua correta aplicabilidade. Constatou-se, entretanto, que os profissionais entrevistados, em todos os hospitais, possuem reduzido grau de conhecimento sobre as questões relacionadas à gestão dos RSS realizada pelas unidades de saúde. De um modo geral, verificou-se que os estabelecimentos avaliados necessitam implantar uma política de capacitação, com utilização de mecanismos atrativos e eficientes para o treinamento dos profissionais envolvidos no manejo dos RSS.

Waste management service delivery has become one of the essential services provided by local municipalities. It is essential for local municipalities to effectively provide waste management services to the public. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of the waste management budget on waste management service delivery. A quantitative research approach is used in the study and secondary data was sourced from local municipalities' websites for 12 years, that is, the reporting period from 2010 - 2021. The study tests the correlation between waste capital expenditure, waste operating expenditure, waste collection revenue, Budget performance and municipal waste management service delivery in selected municipalities in South Africa. Using the Generalised Method of Moment (GMM) the results indicated that there is a significant correlation between municipal waste management service delivery and waste capital expenditure, waste operating expenditure, waste collection revenue and budget performance. The study suggests that local municipalities should increase their municipal waste budget to improve the quality of waste management service delivery.

This study examined the level of awareness, knowledge and practices of primary and
secondary schools students with regard to waste management. Only a limited number of
studies were found to evaluate school student’s awareness, knowledge and practice of
waste management in South Africa. Literature was reviewed dealing with waste
management awareness, knowledge and practices of school students and discussed at the
hand of the principles, objectives and targets of the South African Government towards
waste and waste management.
Using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, a total of 815 students were surveyed
from four primary schools and three secondary schools from the Embalenhle and Secunda
area Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mpumalanga South Africa. The data were analysed by the
use of descriptive statistics including frequency count, percentage, mean and standard
deviation. Other analyses employed included two-way frequency tables with Pearson Chisquare
test, Phi coefficient, in order to determine the significant relationship between
students’ socio-demographic variables.
The study showed that the students were obviously aware of concerns with waste and waste
management practices in their schools and local environment. It was also apparent the
school students had an acute awareness that poor waste management would have a
negative impact on the country as well as on them as the individual. This prominent
awareness was however not evident in the students’ waste management practices. Good
waste management practices activities were minimal at both the school and home
environment. Since school students are seen as one of the key agent of change to work
towards a more sustainable future, they should be engaged as young as possible and given
a quality array of continuous learning to improve their knowledge on environmental problems
such as poor waste management. Improved knowledge would contribute to improved
environmental awareness and a pro-environmental attitude. The critical recommendations of
the study are that the South African Government will have to intensify the research to better

Beyond Waste Management : Challenges to Sustainable Global Physical Resource ManagementSingh, Jagdeep January 2016 (has links)
Current physical resource management (PRM) was investigated in a global perspective in this thesis, to gain a deeper understanding of its implications in a sustainability perspective. In particular, the main challenges to the current PRM system and the kinds of systemic changes needed for sustainable PRM were examined. In five separate studies, different theoretical and practical challenges to current PRM approaches were analysed. A descriptive literature review, causal loop diagrams and semi-structured interviews were performed to gather qualitative and quantitative inferences. Perspectives from industrial ecology, life cycle thinking, systems thinking and environmental philosophy were then applied to analyse global resource/waste management issues. The analysis resulted in an overview of the global ecological sustainability challenges to current PRM and identification of major challenges to the global waste management system. Causal loop diagrams were used to qualitatively analyse the structure and behaviour of production and consumption systems responsible for unintended environmental consequences of purposive actions to improve material and energy efficiencies. Ways in which resource quality could be maintained throughout the system of production and consumption systems were determined by identifying challenges facing product designers while closing the material loops. A planning framework was devised to operationalise the sustainable development demands in society, including production and consumption systems. A broader systems approach is proposed for future sustainable global PRM, focusing on ensuring societal functions within the human activity system. The approach involves designing and managing anthropogenic stocks of physical resources to reduce inflows of physical resources and outflows of wastes and emissions. Life cycle-based databases linking resource consumption with waste generation are needed for improved global PRM. / I denna avhandling undersöktes fysisk resursanvändning i ett globalt perspektiv, för att få en djupare förståelse av dess konsekvenser i ett hållbarhetsperspektiv. Framför allt undersöktes de största utmaningarna med den aktuella fysiska resurshanteringen och vilka typer av systemförändringar som krävs för en hållbar fysisk resurshantering. I fem studier analyserades olika teoretiska och praktiska utmaningar för den nuvarande fysiska resurshanteringen. Litteraturstudier, kausala loopdiagram och semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes för att samla kvalitativ och kvantitativ information. Perspektiv från industriell ekologi, livscykeltänkande, systemtänkande och miljöfilosofi tillämpades för att analysera globala resurs- och avfallshanteringsfrågor. Analysen resulterade i en översikt av den nuvarande fysiska resurshanteringens globala ekologiska hållbarhetsutmaningar och identifiering av stora utmaningar för den globala avfallshanteringen. Kausala loopdiagram användes för att kvalitativt analysera strukturen och beteendet hos de produktions- och konsumtionssystem som gör att ändamålsenliga åtgärder för att förbättra material- och energieffektivitet får oavsiktliga negativa miljökonsekvenser. Hur resurskvalitet kan upprätthållas i produktions- och konsumtionssystemen som helhet bestämdes genom att identifiera de utmaningar som produktdesigners möter när de sluter kretslopp av material. En planeringsmodell utformades för att operationalisera kraven på hållbar utveckling i samhället, bland annat produktions- och konsumtionssystem. Ett bredare systemtänkande föreslås för en hållbar global fysisk resursförvaltning i framtiden, med fokus på att säkerställa samhällsfunktioner inom det mänskliga aktivitetssystemet. This thesis deals with perceptions of refuse as an asset or as a liability and the questions of waste management practices. The aim has been to gain new insights into Stockholm’s waste management in the period 1900–1975 by studying change and continuity in municipal practices and the notions that governed the municipal actors’ actions. The central questions are what factors determined the city’s waste management, and how an urban and local (environmental) problem was formulated and addressed by local authorities and political bodies. In answering, I have applied a theory of inertia in large technical–administrative systems and an analytical framework based on the concept of waste management regimes. During the period a resource recovery regime was replaced by an incineration regime. At the turn of the last century, the quantity and type of refuse produced by Stockholm’s rising population was compounded by increasing consumption. In order to modernize the capital’s waste disposal the city invested in resource recovery by introducing source separation. The fall in demand for fertilizer and a changing composition of the waste in the 1920s made it more difficult to get rid of refuse and led to an end of waste separation. Incineration came to be seen as the modern option and in 1938 Sweden’s first modern incineration plant for municipal waste was built outside Stockholm. The amount of waste produced by Stockholm nearly tripled between 1922, when it was at its lowest levels, and the mid-1960s. The late 1960s saw an even more dramatic increase. In the 1960s waste was discussed as an important environmental issue and in the 1970s recycling was implemented in small scale. At the national level recycling was adopted as a waste management aim in 1975.

The application of water pinch analysis at AECI bioproducts.Schneider, Janos Pal Zsigmond. January 2002 (has links)
AECI Bioproducts (Bioproducts) is part of an industrial complex located at Umbogintwini, approximately 26 km south of Durban, Kwazulu-Natal. This system was selected for water pinch investigation, as it is one of the major users of freshwater on the complex and hence discharges a related quantity of wastewater, amounting to approximately 400 ML per annum. Bioproducts is a manufacturer of l-lysine, which is an animal feed additive.
Water stream flowrate and purity data, as well as operating cost information, were obtained from plant records at AECI Bioproducts. Limiting flowrate and purity conditions for the water-using operations were established from a mass balance over the entire system using the Linnhoff-March software, WaterTracker. Subject to the specified constraints and operating costs, the problem was to determine the design of the water-using subsystem. No treatment plants were included in the study, as none exist at the facility.
Three scenarios were investigated, which examined the operating variability of one of the evaporators on the site (the AS evaporator), which produces a condensate source of variable purity. The operating cost target and network design for each scenario was determined using the Linnhoff-March software, WaterPinch. Alterations from current operating practice were identified and associated savings (water-using network operating cost and freshwater flowrate) were highlighted.
A robust optimal design was identified, with a recycle, which was consistent for all scenarios investigated. The degree of reuse of the AS evaporator condensate source was determined to be dependent on the purity of the source. The limiting constraint was identified at the sea pipeline, for suspended solids (SS): a prohibitively low discharge concentration constraint was identified as posing the major obstacle for saving. The potential for saving was investigated by incrementing the SS concentration constraint and subsequently the free and saline ammonia (FSA) constraint and allowing for the broth effluent to be discharged via the sea pipeline (which was previously disallowed by an effluent exemption). Although relatively small savings were identified through process integration (from 0.61% to 1.56% of the water-using network operating cost), the analysis identified a potential saving of over 70% of the water-using network operating cost, with relaxation of the sea pipeline SS and FSA constraint. / Theses (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2002.

White Privilege in Environmental Policy: An Analysis of Hazardous Waste Management and Operations in Southeast Los AngelesChen, Lindsey 01 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis takes an unconventional approach to environmental racism. Through the lens of white privilege and racial capitalism, I analyze hazardous waste procedures, work site dynamics, and governmental enforcement. Southeast Los Angeles encompasses 26 neighborhoods and the communities racial demographic is 85.8% people of color. The region is home to an abundance of hazardous waste generators, and the area is disproportionately burdened by pollution compared to the rest of LA County. I chose white privilege as a framework because more often than not, discrimination in the workplace is unintentional and covert. White privilege manifests through hazardous waste management in four forms: devaluation of worker training, lack of language accommodations, disenfranchisement of employees of color, and enforcement-heavy regulation. The four factors listed impact facility operations and risk health and safety of personnel, especially employees of color working in closest proximity to toxic chemicals. To prioritize the needs of workers of color, I recommend creating a free hazardous waste consultation service modeled after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s service. Ineffective online instruction must be eliminated and replaced with learner-centered empowerment training. Finally, generator management must facilitate a more supportive culture that empowers employees of color as agents of change in the workplace.

Towards an inclusive municipal solid waste management system: A case study from Xalapa, Veracruz, MexicoGonzález Acosta, Andrés January 2017 (has links)
The city of Xalapa, like many Mexican cities, does not count with any sort of official recycling program. Resource recovery relies on the work performed by the informal recycling sector and often, such work is neglected by the local government. In line with this, the aim of this study is to evaluate if a participatory resource management is a more suitable option than the current approach; so that the informal recycling sector can be included into the formal waste management system. In order to do so, this study employed a case study method using qualitative data; during the month of field work in Xalapa, semi- structured interviews and observation were the techniques used for collecting data. Concepts such as informal economy, participatory resource management, network theory and waste management were employed to analyze the organization and operation of the formal and informal waste management systems. Drawn from the results and analysis, it was presented that the informal recycling sector in Xalapa is composed of 5 different types of actors. Some of these actors are organized, while others work independently. The study revealed that their income is related to their capability of accessing to infrastructure and resources. This access to infrastructure and resources takes the form of a secondary materials trade hierarchy where the income of an actor depends on their ability to add value to their recovered materials. Additionally, organized actors tend to be less prone to manipulation and exploitation. Furthermore, it was deemed relevant to look at the current policies and regulations as well as to the action plans proposed by the local government for alleviating the solid waste crisis in Xalapa. It was identified that to consider a participatory resource management approach, several barriers need to be overcome; these barriers lie within the governance and social spectrum. However, despite the identified barriers, the current waste management system has opportunities for creating a more inclusive and socially just municipal solid waste management system.
