inglés bajo el título Path Through the Canefields (Edinburgh: White Adder Press, 1997), y

This thesis aims at showing how ironical displacement, theoric principle developed by Northrop, of the initiation, action and parabolas is produced, in the poetry Habitó entre nosotros (2002) by José Watanabe, for a range of possibilities it offers to study this displacement considering the influence of the bible tradition and shelters several bible myths. This research stems from the hypothesis that in Habitó entre nosotros, José Watanabe rewrites the bible history of the New Testament by displacing iniciation, action, and parabolas towards a more human and troubled Christ. / Tesis

Valuation, hedging and the risk management of insurance contractsBarbarin, Jérôme 03 June 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims at contributing to the study of the valuation of insurance liabilities and the management of the assets backing these liabilities. It consists of four parts, each devoted to a specific topic.
In the first part, we study the pricing of a classical single premium life insurance contract with profit, in terms of a guaranteed rate on the premium and a participation rate on the (terminal) financial surplus. We argue that, given the asset allocation of the insurer, these technical parameters should be determined by taking explicitly into account the risk management policy of the insurance company, in terms of a risk measure such as the value-at-risk or the conditional value-at-risk. We then design a methodology that allows us to fix both parameters in such a way that the contract is fairly priced and simultaneously exhibits a risk consistent with the risk management policy.
In the second part, we focus on the management of the surrender option embedded in most life insurance contracts. In Chapter 2, we argue that we should model the surrender time as a random time not adapted to the filtration generated by the financial assets prices, instead of assuming that the surrender time is an optimal stopping time as it is usual in the actuarial literature. We then study the valuation of insurance contracts with a surrender option in such a model. We here follow the financial literature on the default risk and in particular, the reduced-form models.
In Chapter 3 and 4, we study the hedging strategies of such insurance contracts. In Chapter 3, we study their risk-minimizing strategies and in Chapter 4, we focus on their ``locally risk-minimizing' strategies. As a by-product, we study the impact of a progressive enlargement of filtration on the so-called ``minimal martingale measure'.
The third part is devoted to the systematic mortality risk. Due to its systematic nature, this risk cannot be diversified through increasing the size of the portfolio. It is thus also important to study the hedging strategies an insurer should follow to mitigate its exposure to this risk.
In Chapter 5, we study the risk-minimizing strategies for a life insurance contract when no mortality-linked financial assets are traded on the financial market. We here extend Dahl and Moller’s results and show that the risk-minimizing strategy of a life insurance contract is given by a weighted average of risk-minimizing strategies of purely financial claims, where the weights are given by the (stochastic) survival probabilities.
In Chapter 6, we first study the application of the HJM methodology to the modelling of a longevity bonds market and describe a coherent theoretical setting in which we can properly define the longevity bond prices. Then, we study the risk-minimizing strategies for pure endowments and annuities portfolios when these longevity bonds are traded.
Finally, the fourth part deals with the design of ALM strategies for a non-life insurance portfolio. In particular, this chapter aims at studying the risk-minimizing strategies for a non life insurance company when inflation risk and interest rate risk are taken into account. We derive the general form of these strategies when the cumulative payments of the insurer are described by an arbitrary increasing process adapted to the natural filtration of a general marked point process and when the inflation and the term structure of interest rates are simultaneously described by the HJM model of Jarrow and Yildirim. We then systematically apply this result to four specific models of insurance claims. We first study two ``collective' models. We then study two ``individual' models where the claims are notified at a random time and settled through time.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-11 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This dissertation aims to analyze two Japanese animation series for TV, Cowboy
Bebop (1998) and Samurai Champloo (2004) by Shinichiro Watanabe. The both series are emblematic by using a remix of the traditional and the modern, the Japanese
culture and the West, generating unusual metamorphoses and creating multiple interfaces
between various contexts and media experience (television, movies, games, manga etc.). The research analyzes the strategies of remix, typical of so-called post-production,
on the dynamics of selection and appropriation of media products and objects of consumption, and their reuse in other forms and contexts, redefining them, as a focus of epistemological critical analysis. The goal is to analyze if the author s remix can be considered in fact, one author. In support of discussion, the research selected authors who have dedicated themselves to track the origins, functions and uses of the remix, and the modulations
of this process in pop culture throughout the twentieth century as Lev Manovich (2005), Eduardo Navas (2008), Nicolas Bourriaud (2009) and Lucia Santaella (2007). Moreover, the theory corpomídia (Greiner and Katz 2005) explains how to avoid the deterministic analysis that consider the work and the author as objects and subjects entered by the culture. The analitic methodology for the both series, while remixes of Japanese pop culture, focuses on observing and reporting different sources, indicating their mediation.
As media products, the series will finally be recognized as maps or overlapping layers, as the researchers specializing in Japanese pop culture has been discussing in recent years (Looser 2009, Igarashi 2001, Greiner, 1998 and 2000 and Luyten, 2000). The expected result is a reflection that will not invoke the traditional dichotomies between East and West and it is focused on analyzing the media culture, with emphasis
on representations of corpomídia that appears as a mark of natural experiments studied / A dissertação propõe analisar duas séries de animações japonesas para TV, Cowboy Bebop (1998) e Samurai Champloo (2004) de Shinichiro Watanabe.

Des lapins watanabe au syndrome hyper IgE humain : caractérisation précoce de l'athérosclérose utilisant une probe optique ciblant l'integrin aVb3 / From Watanabe Rabbits to Human Hyper IgE Syndrome : Characterization of Early Atherosclerosis Using a High Affinity αvβ3 Integrin Targeted Optical ProbeHéroux, Julie 20 December 2012 (has links)
Purpose The detection of early atherosclerosis, before the development of its later sequelae of myocardial infarction, angina or stroke, constitutes an important challenge in current diagnostic medicine. Despite all the recent technological advances, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the Western World and needs to be detected at an earlier stage to allow for more timely therapeutic intervention. This study is focusing on the detection of atherosclerosis or more specifically plaque vulnerability with the help of molecular imaging and pathological observation. Effectively, to predict plaque rupture, molecular imaging has emerged as a powerful diagnostic tool, consequent to the development of a growing number of new probes with affinity for key molecular targets. As a result, such selective molecule with high affinity for overexpressed target in plaque formation, as αvβ3 integrin, should have promise as a probe for imaging atherosclerosis. With the help of molecular imaging combined with pathological observations, we can better comprehend, predict, and detect plaque vulnerability and rupture. Objectives The overall objective of this study is to evaluate different molecular tools to predict the vulnerability of the atheromatous plaque. The major objective of the research was to investigate the possibility of detecting atherosclerotic plaque by using a newly developed synthetic αvβ3 integrin targeted optical probe (ITOP) showing particularly high affinity and specificity for the αvβ3 receptor. We also investigate the relation between this probe and pathological observation of atherosclerotic plaques from WHHL animal model and different human samples. Procedures and Results For this study, experiments were performed on 12 Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits and 1 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits for control. First, our ITOP labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate was used for detecting the presence of αvβ3 receptors in vitro and ex vivo on a Watanabe rabbit model. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated a strong labeling of atherosclerotic plaques, which was absent in tissue from normal NZW rabbits. Segments of plaque accumulation from two distinct regions of ascending and descending aortas were labeled in each rabbit. The signal was found principally in the adventitia and proximal intima of the aortic vessel, corresponding directly to the expression of integrin αvβ3 as determined by antibody assay. Moreover, there was a close association between the level of labeling with the αvβ3 targeted probe and the thickness of the adventitia. Secondly, the ITOP was evaluated on human atherosclerotic samples, and was found to efficiently labeled atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, we observed the same tendency as in the Watanabe rabbit: the ITOP intensity correlated with the degree of adventitial thickening. Finally, we tested the ITOP on Job's Syndrome coronary arteries, and have been able to detect a plaque corresponding to the first type of advanced atherosclerosis (type IV). We also found a relationship between plaque morphology and predisposition to aneurysms in Job's syndrome. Conclusions αvβ3 expression is related to inflammatory and stenotic processes. Our ITOP can efficiently label in vitro the first type of advanced atherosclerotic plaque. In combination with noninvasive imaging techniques that evaluate stenosis, it has great potential for the detection of vulnerable plaque.

Effects of Repulsive Coupling in Ensembles of Excitable ElementsRonge, Robert 23 December 2022 (has links)
We study the collective dynamics of class I excitable elements, which can be described within the theory of nonlinear dynamics as systems close to a saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. The focus of the thesis lies on the study of active rotators as a prototype for such elements.
In part one of the thesis, we motivate the classic model of repulsively coupled active rotators by Shinomoto and Kuramoto and generalize it by considering higher-order Fourier modes in the on-site dynamics of the rotators. We also discuss the mathematical methods which our work relies on, in particular the concept of Watanabe-Strogatz (WS) integrability which allows to describe systems of identical angular variables in terms of Möbius transformations.
In part two, we investigate the existence and stability of periodic two-cluster states for generalized active rotators and prove the existence of a continuum of periodic orbits for a class of WS-integrable systems which includes, in particular, the classic active rotator model. We show that (i) this continuum constitutes a normally attracting invariant manifold and that (ii) one of the solutions yields splay state dynamics. We then develop a perturbation theory for such systems, based on the averaging method. By this approach, we can deduce the asymptotic dynamics of the generalized active rotator model. As a main result, we find that periodic two-cluster states and splay states are robust periodic solutions for systems of identical active rotators. We also investigate a 'transfer of stability' between these solutions by means of so-called broken-symmetry states.
In part three, we study ensembles of higher-dimensional class I excitable elements in the form of Morris-Lecar neurons and find the asymptotic dynamics of such systems to be similar to those of active rotators, which suggests that our results from part two yield a suitable qualitative description for more complicated and realistic neural models.

Where is Meaning Construed?: A Schema for Literary Reception and Comparatism in Three Case StudiesPérez Díaz, Cristina January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation claims contributions on two fronts. First, it aims to contribute to the theory of reception with a practical model of reading postclassical texts that substantially engage ancient ones. In the second place, it contributes three individual readings of three important works of literature on which nothing has been written by anglophone classicists working on classical reception: José Watanabe’s Antígona, Christine Brooke-Rose’s Amalgamemnon, and Anne Carson’s Economy of the Unlost.
This dissertation’s contribution to the theory of reception is the proposition of a practical schema of reading, which is a figure upon which the imagination can operate. Simply put, it posits a schema as the place where meaning is construed. The schema calls attention to the constructedness of meaning and to the act of construction and organizes different moments of “reception”: that of the postclassical text receiving the ancient one (which the schema imagines as a vertical line) and that of the scholar receiving that particular instance of reception, the “I” of interpretation, which is theorized as one of two axes of transcendence of the schema (the other one being the world of/to which the schema speaks and means). Furthermore, the schema puts the “where” of meaning in the relation of (at least) two texts, but the “of” of meaning belongs to the postclassical texts.
The postclassical text receiving ancient text(s) is proposed as a complex work, simultaneously in relationship with texts from the past as well as other texts from other periods. The relations of the postclassical text with each of these texts are different and need to be differently traced or theorized. The relation with the ancient texts is properly textual and thus the primary way of tracing it in the schema is a vertical line that first and foremost pays attention to form, with the tools of structural analysis and philology. Then, the theorization of the vertical line is made thicker with the operation of concepts upon it.
As each of these texts (the classical and the postclassical) mean in relation to webs of texts that are relevant to the vertical relation, the schema imagines an additional dimension to the vertical one: the horizontal. Each of the horizontal lines traced for both the classical and the postclassical texts are in one way or another “historicist” readings, they trace contexts for the texts, but the way that context is understood in the theorization of the horizontal dimension of the schema is plural and never saturated. While this horizontal aspect of meaning is understood as textual, the schema also imagines for it an axis of transcendence, the world on which writers write and in which the reader is situated.
The first chapter’s primary goal is to provide a reading of José Watanabe’s Antígona using the schema to illuminate the ways in which this text makes meaning in relation to Sophocles’ Antigone and part of the body of texts that have come to form part of that name. This reading counters the predominant approach to this work (and to many a work in classical reception), which reads it allegorically, as a commentary on a particular moment in the history of Peru. That predominant way of reading not only ignores the vertical orientation of the text in relation to its avowed ancient source, it also limits itself to one way of tracing the horizontality of the postclassical text, construing “context” in the most immediate and literal sense. The chapter contributes a reading that opens up Antígona to much more than allegory, highlighting its powerful affective and aesthetic dimension, as well as its intersection with recent feminist readings of the Greek tragedy that turn towards the figure of Ismene and the politics of sisterhood.
The second chapter sets itself to the analysis of the complex role that ancient texts play in Christine Brooke-Rose’s radically experimental novel Amalgamemnon. This novel has not been the focus of attention of any work by a classical scholar, and those scholars who have written about it in other fields have failed to analyze the importance that Herodotus’ Histories and Aeschylus’ Agamemnon play at both the structural and the thematic levels. Tracing the vertical line, the chapter shows how these two texts are essential to the novel’s writing and themes. In the horizontal dimension, the schema situates the novel’s engagement with those ancient sources in the context of contemporary feminist discourse, especially as it concerns the question of the possibility of a feminine discourse and an outside of the phallocentric system of signs. That intersection illuminates both how Brooke-Rose is reading the ancient sources as well as what are arguably some of the limitations of her writing in contrast to the ethical commitments of feminisms.
Finally, the third chapter is a reading of Anne Carson’s Economy of the Unlost, a text that is perhaps better known than the texts treated in the previous two chapters, at least in the Anglophone world, but which has nonetheless been fairly disregarded in the scholarship. The chapter provides a rigorous analysis of the “work” of this text, of what it does and how it does it, as the scholarship on Carson’s work has failed to posit or satisfactorily respond to the important questions regarding what constitutes the undeniable originality of her writing. In this particular book, which combines academic and poetic discourses into a new form that partakes of both, Carson proposes a comparative mode of making meaning that cannot be captured with a structural analysis of inter- or -trans- textuality, as the previous two chapters construed the vertical dimension of the schema. Instead, the theory of metaphor developed by Paul Ricoeur provides the appropriate tool to imagine the vertical dimension of the schema and analyze Carson’s exercise in bringing an ancient and a modern author together. This particular construction of the schema brings into the terrain of classical reception the possibility of interpretating comparative works that do not fit nicely within the theoretical margins of this subfield of classical studies. Finally, the chapter provides the occasion to trace another aspect of the schema, its other axis of transcendence, which is the “I” of interpretation.

The analysis of the data coming from the indices chenery-watanabe, rasmussen, cuello et al (a) and cuello et al (b)is illustrated as well as their among comparison concerning the Key sectors. Finally in the fourth part the conclusions of the project are presented. The indices are a ratio of the average multiplier of the row(forward linkages)-colums (backward linkages) divided to the average multiplier of the table. The Key sectors are those whose indices which refer to the forward and backward linkages have result over the unit. As key sectors according to chenery-watanabe and rasmussen are the sectors 7, 8, 9, 13, 18 and the sector 11 (chenery-watanabe) and 15 (rasmussen)while according to the cuello at al (a) and cuello et al (b) are the sectors 1, 4, 5, 9, 30, 31, 32, 39, 44, 46 and 45 (cuello et al (a) and 13, 38 (cuello et al (b)). A comparison concerning the results among the indices, specially for key sectors is attempted, according to simmilarities and differances of the forward and backward linkages.
