BINGE-WATCHING KILLED THE IDIOT BOX: THE CHANGING IDENTITIES OF VIEWERS AND TELEVISION IN THE EXPERIENTIAL, STREAMING VIDEO AGE

Steiner, Emil January 2018 (has links)
In this dissertation I explore what binge-watching is, how it is practiced, and its relationship with contemporary identities of television and viewers. Building on the theoretical frameworks of ambivalent cultural studies, post-structural feminism, and collective memory, I examine binge-watching and binge-viewers through their mediated articulations and ritualized actions. In Chapter 2, I chronicle the history of the terms’ usages in journalism from 1948-2016 and use that data to construct a functional definition of binge-watching. In Chapter 3, I analyze advertised constructions of binge-viewers in the commercial rhetoric of media companies from 2013-2015. In Chapter 4, I explore the rituals of contemporary television viewers through semi-structured interviews to understand how and why people binge-watch. In Chapter 5, I synthesize my findings on the articulations and actions of binge-watching and provided a reflexive narrative of my subject position as a binge-viewer studying binge-watching. I conclude that binge-watching is a techno-cultural phenomenon, which, through its action and articulation, is reshaping the identities of and relationships between television and viewers. / Media & Communication

Influence of natural factors and anthropogenic stressors on sperm whale foraging effort and success at high latitudes

Isojunno, Saana January 2015 (has links)
Behavioural responses can reveal important fitness trade-offs and ecological traps in evolutionarily novel contexts created by anthropogenic stimuli, and are of increasing conservation concern due to possible links to population-level impacts. This thesis illustrates the use of proxies for energy acquisition and expenditure within multivariate and state-based modelling approaches to quantify the relative time and energetic costs of behavioural disturbance for a deep-diving marine mammal (Physeter macrocephalus) in foraging grounds in Kaikoura Canyon (New Zealand) and near Lofoten Islands (Norway). A conceptual framework is first developed to identify and explore links between individual motivation, condition and external constraints to behavioural disturbance [Chapter 1]. The following chapters then use data from behavioural response studies (BRS) to: 1) derive biologically relevant metrics of behaviour [all chapters], 2) investigate effects of boat-based focal follows and tagging procedures [Chapters 2-3], and 3) relate responses to specific disturbance stimuli (distance, approach, noise) from whale-watching [Chapter 2], naval sonar and playback of presumed natural predator (killer whale Orcinus orca) sounds [Chapter 4]. A novel hidden state model was developed to estimate behavioural budgets of tagged sperm whales from multiple streams of biologging (DTAG) data [Chapter 3]. Sperm whales traded off time spent at foraging depths in a non-foraging and non-resting state in response to both tag boat presence, 1-2 kHz naval sonar (SPL 131-165 rms re 1μPa) and mammal-eating killer whale sound playbacks, indicating that parallel non-lethal costs were incurred in both anthropogenic disturbance and presumed antipredatory contexts. While behavioural responses were highly variable by individual, biologically informed state-based models appeared effective to control for variability in energy proxies across different functional contexts. These results and Chapter 5 “linking buzzes to prey” demonstrate that behavioural context is a signal that can aid understanding of how individual non-lethal disturbance responses can impact fitness.

International market potential of avitourism in South Africa

Conradie, Nicolene 06 1900 (has links)
Despite rapid growth of avitourism globally, the international market potential of avitourism in South Africa, which has remarkable birdlife, is not fully utilised. This research aimed to profile international avitourists by investigating their behavioural involvement, motivations, preferences, agreement to ecotourism principles, and awareness of avitourism in South Africa. Primary data were gathered by distributing questionnaires at the British Birdwatching Fair and Dutch Vogelfestival. Exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were applied. The results indicated that avitourists differ in terms of behavioural involvement, motivation and preferences for each fair and birder type (casual, active or committed), but agreed on ecotourism principles. A second-order CFA model for avitourist motivation revealed three new constructs – wellbeing, intellectual activity and engagement. Respondents indicated relatively low awareness but high interest in visiting South Africa as a birding destination. The results support the South African avitourism industry potential in product development and destination marketing. / Transport, Logistics & Tourism / M.Com. (Tourism Management)

Watching women, falling women : Power and dialogue in three novels by Margaret Atwood

Gregersdotter, Katarina January 2003 (has links)
This study examines the three novels Cat s Eye, The Robber Bride, and Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. It focuses on the female characters and their relationships to each other: Their friendships are formed in a patriarchally structured environment and are therefore arenas for defending and controlling the norms of such a structure. The women continually watch each other and themselves, and through the power exercise of watching, femininity is constructed. Atwood describes acts of dialogic storytelling as a means to find options to gendered behavior. / digitalisering@umu

Fizinio aktyvumo stebėsena panaudojant asmeninį EKG monitorių “Heart Guard” / The watching of physical activity using individual EKG monitor „Heart guard“

Grigelionytė, Edita 18 June 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The watching of physical activity is very important if you need to test the organism reaction to the physical activity, to do physical activity proportional, and also to avoid cardiovascular illnesses, because the mortality of cardiovascular illnesses is the biggest not only in Lithuania, but in all the world too. The purpose of this job was to test the intensity of movement and cardiovascular functional rates educational testing the organism reaction to the physical activity when you are going or running, using the mobile individual EKG monitor “Heart Guard”. In this job we hade three tasks: 1 – to test dimensional precision of physical activity using acceleration electrodes; 2 – to test the triaxial acceleration electrode influence for the physical activity; 3 – compose evaluation of physical activity by physical intensity cardiovascular system reaction when you are walking and running. All test where done in kinesiology laboratory of Lithuanian Physical academy. We where testing the trained and untrained peoples. The most importance rate, from which we can do the conclusions, was relative movement power (Wkg), heart rate and enumerated rate – biologial load value rate. The facts of our tests shows, that the made program can be adapted and used to solve the problems in sports training and to individualized the training process for elite athletes. The results shows, that the registered accelerometer graph of triaxial acceleration rate let us to appreciate the changes of... [to full text]

Viola, Milca Vasni Ceccon. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: This work was created from a research which primary objective was to unterstand how students who attend courses for young and adults held image readings from diffent sources. Beyond simply analying their readings, the work was intended to release their own interpretations of the images which had been showed them in situations of art education. There has been a merger between research methodology and education methodology which have alternately bee an separating from each other. In the course of classes, the images had been read by the students and during the research process, the detailed register and the dialogue with authors became possible the creation of this work. As a result, it is possible to register that there has been an approach between students and knowledge hat started including other languages apart from the writing one. Besides all that, there have ideas' expression and organization creation in conjuction with the appreciation of their own speeches whenever considered themselves as thinkers. As a consequence, the reduction of their speechers has ben perceived by us. I have also found a greater argumentative and critical force during process revealed by endless questions that have flowed after overcoming preliminary inhibitions. The insecurity for asking has progressively been replaced by the force of the curiosity. / Mestre
