In pursuit of full freedom: an archaeological and historical study of the free African-American community at parting ways, Massachusetts, 1779-1900

Hutchins, Karen 24 September 2015 (has links)
African Americans living in the small community of Parting Ways, near Plymouth, Massachusetts, realized their newly achieved independence through the construction of homeplace using the material culture of respectability and socioeconomic integration into the community. I expand upon a previous study of this community, which identified evidence that the former slaves retained African cultural traditions, to analyze material evidence of consumption and subsistence. This study reveals that African Americans living at Parting Ways crafted identities that emphasized independence, refinement, and respectability despite living in a society that stereotyped African Americans as dependent members incapable of full social participation. The archaeological data come from five seasons of excavation, 1975-1978 and 1989, on the properties of two African-American families who lived at Parting Ways. I situate the artifacts together with deed, probate, court, town, and census records to construct a detailed historical context in which to interpret the material practice of daily life, identity creation, and community formation. Paternalism and dependence, features of slavery in New England, continued after emancipation and were seen at Parting Ways through the actions of town leaders who permitted the families to build houses on public lands and also assumed legal and financial guardianship of the families. Within their homes, however, the families participated in the material culture of respectability through the rituals of tea drinking, refined dining, formal clothing, and the use of orthodox medicines. The records reveal that they also participated actively in the town's economic life by exchanging their manual labor for agriculture products like cattle heads and feet. Through their household goods, their customs, and their labor, these families embodied respectability, integrated themselves into the community, and constructed a homeplace--a place of refuge, family building, and identity formation. At Parting Ways, African-Americans worked to negate the implications of their continued dependence on town leaders by developing individual personas that espoused the values of independence, freedom, refinement, and family unity - and in so doing defined their own participation in Plymouth, and American, society.

Nečesaný, Tomáš January 2020 (has links)
IN ENGLISH The thesis deals with intertext and architext relations in some works of T. Pratchett. It tries to introduce some variants of intertextual referencing, their possibilities and above all to map the use of this literary phenomenon together with its interpretation. The aim of this work is to create at least an approximate map of links with their description. The method of work is primarily a thorough study of novels in translation and their originals. The introductory part of the thesis deals with the theoretical basis, the central part of the work is a summary of individual passages containing an intertext or architectext reference and their analysis.

Educating About/for Food Security Through Environmental Education: A Qualitative Study of Teacher Education Programs in Ontario

Valeri, Alishia Adele 09 July 2020 (has links)
Food insecurity is on the rise worldwide and within Canada due to a myriad of factors such as climatic instability, rising food prices and unsustainable food production practices. In this context, educational systems (e.g. schools and universities) can contribute to developing knowledge and awareness of food insecurity as well as fostering new ways of thinking and engaging with food premised on just and sustainable food systems. This study is situated within the field of environmental education where there is a growing body of research at the intersections of food and the environment. Likewise, it was guided by the theoretical framing of EcoJustice Education, which offers a way of teaching and learning premised on the belief that our thoughts and actions can foster and enhance more social and ecologically equitable connections between food and the environment. By engaging in semi-structured interviews with teacher educators in select teacher education programs in Ontario and conducting document reviews, I investigated how the integration of the topic of food security is taking place—or not—in the initial training of future teachers in the province. The results showed that integration is not consistent across the different organizational levels of the programs investigated (i.e. whole-program level and classroom level). Moreover, the interviews with teacher educators revealed that any practices aiming at the integration of food security topics in BEd programs were primarily guided by a sustainable cultures perspective, which sees the world as having interconnected relationships amongst all living things. This view is supported by the data analysis of interviews with teacher educators, the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum documents, and select course syllabi. On the other hand, the school curriculum documents contained conflicting views on the topic, including an understanding of the world as being based on hierarchized relationships. This research advances the field of environmental education by further adding to the limited scholarship on the topic of food security in the context of EE, as well as contributing to an account of food security education and EE with a focus on teacher education in Ontario.

Outdoors in the office? : A grounded theory study about the power of norms in the office working world

Herzhoff, Verena January 2022 (has links)
New ways of working with a flexibilization in time and space are characteristics of today’s office world, but at the same time stress-related health problems are on the rise. Nature contacts is shown to be a resource for health, and outdoor offices were invented to combine both flexible working and health resources at the workplace. As outdoor office work (OOW) is quite new and little is known about its usage, the aim of the study was to deepen our understanding about what circumstances lead to the consequence, that employees do not conduct office-related work tasks outdoors, even if they have access to outdoor spaces and green areas. Following research question was about to be answered by a grounded theory study: What factors hinder office workers to conduct office-related tasks outdoors? The data collection was conducted in 9 semi-structured online interviews and 3 phones calls with participants from Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany. The theoretical model was constructed through a process of coding and memo writing. The results show a theoretical model that entails one core category, Norms, and three main categories, Personal Factors, Organizational Factors and Practical Issues. The categories act interdependent, whereas existing norms have the most powerful impact. Work is perceived as something that should be conducted indoors at a desk, and as something that is stressful and can be inconvenient. The existing norms of how to conduct office work are influencing personal, organizational, and practical factors that lead to the consequence that employees do not conduct office work outdoors. The findings of the study provide useful knowledge for further research in the field of OOW, as well as for organizations that want to implement an outdoor office.

Plant community response to reduced mowing regimens along highway right-of-ways in northeastern Mississippi.

Entsminger, Edward D 17 May 2014 (has links)
I investigated percent coverage, plant height, species richness, and woody stem density in plant communities in ten study plots during spring and fall (2010-2012) within 3 different treatments (continual mowings, one fall mowing, and one fall mowing with native wildflower seeds) on highway 25 right-of-way in Oktibbeha and Winston counties, Mississippi. I recorded 277 plant species including native and non-native forbs, legumes, grasses, rushes/sedges, and woody plants. Non-native agronomic grasses exhibited greatest coverage greater than 90 percent occurring in all treatments. Percent coverage of plants less than 0.46m height category exceeded 100 while, greater than 0.46m plant height categories averaged 55 percent. Woody stem density ranged from 7,772 year 1 to 10,025 stems/hectare year 2. I detected no significant differences in plant height or woody stems among treatments. One mowing per year retained agronomic plant cover for erosion control and annual cost savings up to 75 percent for roadside maintenance.

En ömsesidig process En kvalitativ studie om hur studie- och yrkesvägledningen är en del i integrationen av nyanlända ungdomar

Bjurén, Maria, Fredriksson, Lisa January 2016 (has links)
In recent years the number of adolescent refugees entering Sweden without an accompanying guardian has increased almost 10000 percent. Due to this unprecedented increase, career counseling must take new paths, explore new avenues and adopt new way of thinking in order to improve the structure. This is necessary to be able to provide enough guidance for adolescent refugees to begin the integration process into Swedish society. The aim of the study is to find out which ways of working and which career counseling methods are being used with adolescent refugees. The aim is also to see what the expectations are on the career counselors from a macro- and meso-perspective and to find out what the different parties want from counseling, since career counseling is a component of the integration process. This study is qualitative. Four career counselors, one department manager, one county council politician responsible for education and one employee at the Swedish National Agency for Education were interviewed. The result have been analyzed using chosen concepts in Careership theory, SCCT and Systems theory. Concepts of cultural competence and asymmetrical powers have also been used. The study results show that career counselors need more time to be able to perform high quality sessions and have the opportunity to use group counseling when appropriate. The counselor’s level of commitment strongly affects the result of the career counseling. The cultural competence of the counselors and engaged parents or guardians are crucial to successfully integrating youth refugees.

Relationer som läker - En studie om arbetssätt på hem för vård eller boende (HVB) för ensamkommande barn

Bjerhem, Peter January 2013 (has links)
The number of unaccompanied refugee minors arriving in Sweden has risen significantly in recent years. This calls for a reception in which their, (also long term) needs are covered. In particular, this accentuates the responsibility of the group-homes where most of these children and youth are placed after their asylum claims are accepted. In this study attention is focused on how the staff in these group-homes work, gaining information on current methods being used in the group homes, and exploring how effective and sufficient these methods are considered to be. The study involves a mixed-methods design, including both interviews and survey methods. The results show that specific group-home methods in general are perceived as very useful, but not the most important aspect in their work. Unspecific methods are used significantly more frequently, and are based in the ability to adapt to different situations and clients. The most important and useful resource in this work is considered to be having a relationship built on confidence and trust with the children, and to create a place of safety for the children. The perceptions of why the relationship is important are varied, often between the group-homes. Some emphasize practical areas, other emphasize emotional and developmental areas. Those who view the relationship as emotionally positive tend to further emphasize the importance of building relationships.
