"An experiment in the superorganic": empire and political evolution in Ursula K. Le Guin's Hainish Universe

2014 June 1900 (has links)
ABSTRACT Ursula K. Le Guin is an American author of novels, short stories, poems, children's books, and essays; she predominantly writes science fiction and fantasy. Le Guin first began publishing in the 1960s and continues her work today including speaking engagements in and around her home in Portland, Oregon. Her most recent publication is The Real and Unreal: Selected Stories (2 vol) from 2012. Le Guin is particularly known for her books set in the Hainish Universe. These short stories and novels comprise what is sometimes referred to as the Hainish Cycle and discuss various themes of gender, ecology, religion, and politics. The universe is believed to be seeded from and governed principally by the world known as Hain. The Hainish global government undergoes a transformation from its original iteration as the imperial League of All Worlds into the more cosmopolitan peace-keeping Ekumen and while the publication chronology of the works and the internal chronology of the universe differ there is a notable political evolution from the League to the Ekumen. By studying the characters of Raj Lyubov, Genly Ai, and Havzhiva from the novels The World for World is Forest (1972), The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), and Four Ways to Forgiveness (1995) this paper will examine assumed cultural understandings regarding themes of empire, imperialism, cosmopolitanism, and governance by building on the criticism of James W. Bittner and David M. Higgins. I will utilize the theoretical science fiction frameworks of Steve Shaviro and Istvan Csicsery-Ronay Jr. in conjunction with Michael Ignatieff's theory Empire Lite to demonstrate Le Guin's capacity to continually envision new parameters for alien contact and negotiation and explain how her work in world building and character development challenges readers to question existing concepts of empire through the evolution and exhaustion of two systems of global governance.

Förändring genom standardisering / Change through standardization

Wettersten, Hampus January 2018 (has links)
The study covers the Eltel Networks organization and the department Team Uppsala build. Eltel Networks is a fiberoptic company that install, design and maintain fiberoptical networks. The reason the study has been conducted is that the organization feels that there is alot of variation in how the workers execute the work. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether standardization can change the organization and how it can be used. The method that has been used in the study is surveys and actionresearch. The datacollection methods have been a qualitative study with a survey and interviews. From the answers in the survey, it showed will to change the organization, how everyone works differently, thoguh some have tried different ways of working and tried new things. It showed how the respondents have turned down some of the options for document storage and that they would prefer a ready-made folder structure to work with. The interviews showed that communication needs to be better in several places in the organization. It showed that there is some standardizations in the company that have been active in the past but need to recomence. The interviews also showed how important it is for the management and other employees to have a desire to change the organization. The conclusion of the study has shown that if an ISO standardization is taken up, it could create a change in the organization and also that the organization could create a change by applying offensive quality development.

Schubert, Janete January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the working methods and the situations of vulnerability witch appear on the daily activities of Community Health Workers (Agentes Comunitários de Saúde - ACS), who have since 1991 integrated the Brazilian Health Care System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS). A qualitative research was conducted, following the observação participante methodology - accompanying house visits and the daily work routines of the ACSs for a period of four months in a Community Health facility in Porto Alegre city. By acknowledging the complex variety of situations ACSs get involved with during their work hours, we became aware of many suffering situations directly connected with their practices. Using Mann's concept of vulnerability (1993), this study elaborates a scheme designed to comprehend the three different dimensions of suffering that interfere with ACSs procedures: a political-institutional dimension, a second dimension that relates to everyday routines in those workers life's, and still a third one that embraces the sufferings inflicted directly on him/her. These dimensions cannot be set apart, for they are interrelated and affect each other. The conclusion is that political, social and cultural rationalities influence an ACS's work, and that large scale changes such as better job conditions, major investments in professional training and pay raises - but not solely - are necessary to lessen the workers' suffering.

Rodriguez, Celia Jaqueline Sanz January 2017 (has links)
Understood as a historical and relational process, the social heterogeneity of family work forms and agriculture production is addressed in this thesis from a perspective that take precedence by the analysis of the significant universe of the actors involved in this research. The problematization of the European immigration policy undertaken in Brazil in the 19th century was the starting point for the definition of the empirical cut. This thesis responds to the main objective of understanding how the social heterogeneity of farmers' collectives in the municipalities of Domingos Martins, Santa Teresa and Santa Leopoldina (Espírito Santo state) is constituted and which are the main social effects related to the process of classification and social distinction. Four specific objectives were built to answer this question: the first refers to an understanding of the historical conformation of the region. The second objective is more specific to agricultural practices and to socially shared meanings. A third objective was to understand the native schemes of classification, hierarchy, differentiation and social distinction. The fourth objective focuses in understanding the impacts of differentiation processes that circulate in the research context. A historical approach and ethnographic perspective oriented the methodological options. Documentary research, direct observation and application of interviews in different phases of field research between 2015 and 2016 were the most used techniques. As a result, we found that in the context of the research there are different forms of doing agriculture and ways to be a farmer that relate important schemes of production and appreciation of practices. Using these schemes, different collectives create their practices and strategies in a context in which a process flow of social classification is used to explain heterogeneity and promote distinctions. In this sense, it is noted that two plans constitute the heterogeneity: a plan that exhibits the agricultural practices and the ability of farmers to define diversified strategies based on social schemes that guide and give meaning to their actions, promoting the constitution and reproduction of heterogeneity socially significant. On the second plane of analysis, the constitution of heterogeneity revealed unequal hierarchies and opportunities among the collectives from the naturalization of differences within the principles of di-vision based on the ethnic-racial origin of the farmers and the establishment of structural distance from the rhetoric of the agriculture modernization.

Sustainable Communities: Through the Lens of Cherokee Youth

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This study argues for Indigenous-led community development as a salient field of study whereby both theory and practice would be held to the goals of decolonizing entrenched systems that suppress indigeneity, as well as embodying processes to rediscover, regain, and reimage aspects integral to Indigenous well-being and sustainability. Building on fieldwork with Cherokee youth in Stilwell, OK using community mapping and photovoice methods, it is argued that holistic and culturally relevant frameworks that fully situate such salient factors are needed when examining topics related to sustainability, well-being, and resurgence in Native American communities. Utilizing youth narratives, the study proposes a starting point for a Cherokee-led community development framework. / Dissertation/Thesis / Project Booklet / Doctoral Dissertation Community Resources and Development 2016

Relação campo-cidade na pequena cidade de Caarapó - MS / Small urban agglomeration and the countryside-city relationship in Caarapó-MS

Roni Mayer Lomba 19 July 2011 (has links)
Small urban agglomerations in studies on cities in the Geography area have long been relegated to a lower level plan of relevance in relation to the research of the metropolis and to metropolitan environment. Some analyses find the essence of the small agglomeration based in studies of the regional economy. However, it was only in recent decades that some research groups related to Urban Geography or related to regional studies incorporated an analysis of small agglomeration to the understanding of the urban network. As far as the case of Caarapó (a small town in the South of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul) is concerned, our discussion aimed at analyzing the historical meanings of the cluster formation, their ways of life; hence, being possible to highlight the recent expansion of the industrialization of agriculture and amendments to the traditional ways of life. For the fulfillment of this research, we collected a great amount of field information so as to understand the history of the town, and the importance of the countryside for the town and vice versa. In the field research, we reached the understanding that the city has an important role in the countryside, particularly in the peasant agriculture inputs, in the trading of inputs, services, or even in retail trade. The field embraces the possibility of reproducing many urban activities, especially in the tertiary sector in which their reflexes are noticeable, both in terms of economic development and the urban crisis that impact on the activities. In the case of the town of Caarapó, there will always be the marked presence of the countryside in the town. Many urban areas still arise for agrarian activities, where there are small farms within the city. The ways of life of the dwellers, which in the beginning remained more closed and bound to the field, have been undergoing transformations, like in the ideology of industrialization of the field with a meaning in the city, and impacting, for example, on the real state expansion followed by speculation on changes of urban landscapes and on the use of collective equipment.

In this research, it was used the model of the evolutionary theory based on the concept of National System of Innovation that generated the concept of ASPIL. Thus the dynamic of the arrangements of the northeast of Brazil is presented by using the typology developed by Cavalcanti Filho (2011) that aims at separating the productive arrangements and systems from the functional and structural variables that exist on the productive and innovative dynamic of the arrangements and its variations having as base the systemic character of the economic system as well as the political and cultural dimension that have influence the arrangements dynamic. Among the selected cases, it was noticed the presence of two systems e 14 productive arrangements that are most of times dynamically dependent on the systems located outside their territory having as the most important lack of efficiency the innovative and financial dimensions. On the other hand, the systems and arrangements that are dynamic have in general the local culture as the driving force for innovation. Despite having productive and commercial dimensions present in the territory, the dimensions have fragilities that come not only from the deficiency of the innovative and financial dimension but also from cultural and historical formation of the region that has strong influence on the dynamic arrangement. It was observed the need of policies for a better interaction between the actors present in the arrangements with the strengthening of the knowledge of the agents with the objective of strengthening the innovative dimension as well as driving budget lines that are integrated with the arrangement characteristics.
