Shared Spaces: The Human and the Animal in the Works of Zora Neale Hurston, Mark Twain, and Jack LondonHarper, Pamela Evans 08 1900 (has links)
Living in tune with nature means respecting the natural environment and realizing its power and the ways it manifests in daily life. This essay focuses on the ways in which respect for nature is expressed through animal imagery in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Mark Twain's "The Stolen White Elephant," Roughing It, and Pudd'nhead Wilson, and Jack London's The Call of the Wild. Each author encouraged readers to seek the benefits of nature in order to become better human beings, forge stronger communities, and develop a more unified nation and world. By learning from the positive example of the animals, we learn how to share our world with them and with each other.

Generalized Abelian Gauge Theory & Generalized Global SymmetryHössjer, Emil January 2020 (has links)
We study Cheeger-Simons differential characters in order to define higher form U(1) gauge fields and their Wilson lines. We then go on to define generalized global symmetries. This is a topological formulation of symmetries which has interesting consequences when the charged operators extend through space. Our main source of such charged operators are the generalized Wilson lines. A higher form Noether theorem and a Ward identity are given for transformations of Wilson lines. As examples of quantum field theories with generalized symmetries we cover Sigma models, Maxwell theory and BF-theory. These are examples of Z, U(1) and Zn symmetries respectively. Finally we discuss spontaneous symmetry breaking for higher dimensional symmetries and a Goldstone theorem is provided. These massless Goldstone bosons are shown to have internal structure corresponding to non-zero spin. The photon is identified as the spin one Goldstone boson in QED. Our review of generalized symmetries is more formal than the ones in other papers. This makes various points explicit and leads to general selection rules. Many results of previous papers are reproduced in detail.

Měření součinitele přestupu tepla v kruhových minikanálech / Tubular minichannel heat transfer coefficient measurementSnášel, Jan January 2013 (has links)
The master’s thesis is describing measurement of heat transfer coefficient for heat exchanger with tubular minichannels. For understanding of the process, basic theory of heat transfer has its part in this work. The advanteges of minichannels and their clasiffication are also stated here. Another part describes the calculation for determination of heat transfer coefficient using the Wilson plot method and the method of direct determination of heat transfer coefficient. Measurement data are evaluated and comparison is made for results of both methods. This results are used for formulation of correlation equation for given flow regime.

Academic-Staff Rating Index (ARI) SystemMokole, Thapelo Godwin 06 1900 (has links)
Supervising students at a distance presents numerous social, mental, professional, and individual challenges on the student- supervisor relationship, and on the substance, progress, and conveyance. From the literature review, several tools and technologies are developed to improve academic quality; however, most of these tools and technologies focus on journal articles’ quality rather than student/supervisor relationships. This study aims to develop an academic rating index (ARI) that will show a supervisor’s review by students and provide an interactive forum. The application will serve as an academic supervision teaching-level index that provides an aggregated measure of supervisors’ past and current impact. Thus, the ARI aims to aggregate all academic supervisor ratings and the number of ratings that they received in the entire academic career to complement their citation index. The study will use quantitative coding and programming tools to ensure a good quality system in the development phase. The application and findings of the study contribute to academic service quality. / Operations Management / M. Tech. (Information Technology)

Estimating the Ratio of Two Poisson RatesPrice, Robert M., Bonett, Douglas G. 01 September 2000 (has links)
Classical and Bayesian methods for interval estimation of the ratio of two independent Poisson rates are examined and compared in terms of their exact coverage properties. Two methods to determine sampling effort requirements are derived.

This master thesis contains three articles related by the underlying idea of a generalization of the Schur-Weyl duality. The main objective is to obtain an algebraic description of the centralizer of the image of the diagonal action of U_q(sl_2) in the tensor product of three irreducible representations, when q is not a root of unity. The connection between a centrally extended Askey-Wilson algebra AW(3) and this centralizer is examined for this purpose. In the first article, the elements of the centralizer of the action of U_q(sl_2) in its threefold tensor product are defined with the help of the universal R-matrix of U_q(sl_2). These elements are shown to satisfy the defining relations of AW(3). In the second article, the universal R-matrix of the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2) is used in a similar fashion with the Bannai-Ito algebra BI(3). In this case, the formalism of the R-matrix allows to define the higher rank Bannai-Ito algebra BI(n) as the centralizer of the action of osp(1|2) in its n-fold tensor product. The third article proposes a conjecture that establishes an isomorphism between a quotient of AW(3) and the centralizer of the image of the diagonal action of U_q(sl_2) in the tensor product of any three irreducible representations. The conjecture is proved for several cases, and the Temperley-Lieb, Birman-Murakami-Wenzl and one-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebras are recovered as quotients of the Askey-Wilson algebra.
