Capacity Metric for Chip Heterogeneous Multiprocessors

Otoom, Mwaffaq Naif 05 March 2012 (has links)
The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a new performance metric, Capacity, which evaluates the performance of Chip Heterogeneous Multiprocessors (CHMs) that process multiple heterogeneous channels. Performance metrics are required in order to evaluate any system, including computer systems. A lack of appropriate metrics can lead to ambiguous or incorrect results, something discovered while developing the secondary contribution of this thesis, that of workload modes for CHMs — or Workload Specific Processors (WSPs). For many decades, computer architects and designers have focused on techniques that reduce latency and increase throughput. The change in modern computer systems built around CHMs that process multi-channel communications in the service of single users calls this focus into question. Modern computer systems are expected to integrate tens to hundreds of processor cores onto single chips, often used in the service of single users, potentially as a way to access the Internet. Here, the design goal is to integrate as much functionality as possible during a given time window. Without the ability to correctly identify optimal designs, not only will the best performing designs not be found, but resources will be wasted and there will be a lack of insight to what leads to better performing designs. To address performance evaluation challenges of the next generation of computer systems, such as multicore computers inside of cell phones, we found that a structurally different metric is needed and proceeded to develop such a metric. In contrast to single-valued metrics, Capacity is a surface with dimensionality related to the number of input streams, or channels, processed by the CHM. We develop some fundamental Capacity curves in two dimensions and show how Capacity shapes reveal interaction of not only programs and data, but the interaction of multiple data streams as they compete for access to resources on a CHM as well. For the analysis of Capacity surface shapes, we propose the development of a demand characterization method in which its output is in the form of a surface. By overlaying demand surfaces over Capacity surfaces, we are able to identify when a system meets its demands and by how much. Using the Capacity metric, computer performance optimization is evaluated against workloads in the service of individual users instead of individual applications, aggregate applications, or parallel applications. Because throughput was originally derived by drawing analogies between processor design and pipelines in the automobile industry, we introduce our Capacity metric for CHMs by drawing an analogy to automobile production, signifying that Capacity is the successor to throughput. By developing our Capacity metric, we illustrate how and why different processor organizations cannot be understood as being better performers without both magnitude and shape analysis in contrast to other metrics, such as throughput, that consider only magnitude. In this work, we make the following major contributions: • Definition and development of the Capacity metric as a surface with dimensionality related to the number of input streams, or channels, processed by the CHM. • Techniques for analysis of the Capacity metric. Since the Capacity metric was developed out of necessity, while pursuing the development of WSPs, this work also makes the following minor contributions: • Definition and development of three foundations in order to establish an experimental foundation — a CHM model, a multimedia cell phone example, and a Workload Specific Processor (WSP). • Definition of Workload Modes, which was the original objective of this thesis. • Definition and comparison of two approaches to workload mode identification at run time; The Workload Classification Model (WCM) and another model that is based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). • Development of a foundation for analysis of the Capacity metric, so that the impact of architectural features in a CHM may be better understood. In order to do this, we develop a Demand Characterization Method (DCM) that characterizes the demand of a specific usage pattern in the form of a curve (or a surface in general). By doing this, we will be able to overlay demand curves over Capacity curves of different architectures to compare their performance and thus identify optimal performing designs. / Ph. D.

A study about the health problematic of nursing workers: perspective to health survellaince.

Cruz, Eliane Bezerra da Silva 15 September 2006 (has links)
The importance of the health of nursing workers have been carried through researches and with the formularization of new health’s policies. This study aims to contribute with proposals of intervention related to the best quality of life of the nursing workers. It propose to know the problematic of health of these workers, in a university hospital with the following aims: to identify the process of nursing work in this hospital, to identify the workloads that the workers are exposed to during the work process, to apprehend the processes of strain attributed for them to the exposition to workloads, to recognize the strategies of prevention suggested by the workers for improvement of the health conditions and quality of life at work and to build some indicators of monitoring the work conditions and health. Under quantitative and qualitative approach, the study is based on the social determination of the health-illness process which was lived deeply for these workers. The setting of study was a university hospital of Minas Gerais. Eight nursing workers had participated of it, bring: a Nurse, four Technicians and three Nursing Auxiliaries. For the data collection was used the technique of focus group which was supported by filming. As well collective inquiry and forms was used to data collection of the institution and workers. The data analisys put in evidence a process of capitalist valuation of absolute surplus-value which increase the working hours without the increasing of income. Also, they put in evidence the relative surplus-value which is apprehended for the intensification of the work rhythm without the increasing of workforce. This valuetion becomes visible in the process of nursing work. The workers consider workers themselves. exposed to all types of workloads, such as: biological, chemical, physical, mechanical, physiological and psychic. However, they report with higher intensity to physiological and psychic workloads. The related processes of strain are the diverse infections; respiratory problems, skin problems, hearing and circulatory problems; musculoskeletal disorders; stress; depression; and the symptoms of pain, fatigue, discouragement, despondency,, bad mood, indisposition, fear, irritability and tension are also cited. For recovery of the physical and mental capacity, they consider strategies of prevention related to the work environment such as: places for rest, better furniture and adjusted meals; and work conditions: increase of income and concession of benefits, continued education and periodic meetings. Based in these results monitoring indicators are proposed related to the dimensions: general - relative to the policies of the institution; intermediate - relative to the organization of work process, and singular - related to the health of worker. At this moment, for the surveillance of the health of nursing workers, it is possible to propose some indicators, in different levels of the empirical reality, that will allow supplying subsidies to a better diagnosis and accompaniment of the health problems of these workers, in view of future interventions.

A Preliminary Exploration of Memory Controller Policies on Smartphone Workloads

Narancic, Goran 26 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores memory performance for smartphone workloads. We design a Video Conference Workload (VCW) to model typical smartphone usage. We describe a trace-based methodology which uses a software implementation to mimic the behaviour of specialised hardware accelerators. Our methodology stores dataflow information from the original application to maintain the relationships between requests. We first study seven address mapping schemes with our VCW, using a first-ready, first-come-first-served (FR-FCFS) memory scheduler. Our results show the best performing scheme is up to 82% faster than the worst. The VCW is memory intensive, with up to 86.8% bandwidth utilisation using the best performing scheme. We also test a Web Browsing and a set of computer vision workloads. Most are not memory intensive, with utilisation under 15%. Finally, we compare four schedulers and find that the FR-FCFS scheduler using the Write Drain mode [8] performed the best, outperforming the worst scheduler by 6.3%.

Resource optimization of edge servers dealing with priority-based workloads by utilizing service level objective-aware virtual rebalancing

Shahid, Amna 08 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
IoT enables profitable communication between sensor/actuator devices and the cloud. Slow network causing Edge data to lack Cloud analytics hinders real-time analytics adoption. VRebalance solves priority-based workload performance for stream processing at the Edge. BO is used in VRebalance to prioritize workloads and find optimal resource configurations for efficient resource management. Apache Storm platform was used with RIoTBench IoT benchmark tool for real-time stream processing. Tools were used to evaluate VRebalance. Study shows VRebalance is more effective than traditional methods, meeting SLO targets despite system changes. VRebalance decreased SLO violation rates by almost 30% for static priority-based workloads and 52.2% for dynamic priority-based workloads compared to hill climbing algorithm. Using VRebalance decreased SLO violations by 66.1% compared to Apache Storm's default allocation.

Sauer, Emma January 2016 (has links)
A starting point for working life should be to create a work environment that gives individuals the ability to enter, remain and progress in work. The work is significant both for individual health and development activities as well as opportunities for growth. Workplace therefore constitutes to be an important setting for preventive interventions. It is the employer who has the principal responsibility for the work. No employee should risk being injured or suffer ill health at work. The purpose of the study was to investigate the psychosocial work environment and stress experienced by workers in the restaurant industry. To answer the purpose a qualitative approach been used and five semi-structured interviews were conducted. Those interviewed for the study were service employees in the restaurant industry. Analysis of the data was performed with a manifest content analysis. The results obtained show that works mostly have negative experiences of their psychosocial work environment and stress, however, is any variations regarding the level of problems. Their work is described involve constant stress and includes a number of work deficiencies. There is an imbalance between the demands of work and lack of resources that affect the health negatively both mentally and physically. Workers emphasize factors of stressful work, a lack of recovery and leadership resulting in health and safety problems.

The Brazilian Constitution of 1988 brought in its text for guiding legal conduct of Brazilian education for the following decades. With the enactment of Law No. 11,738, on July 16, 2008, known as the law of wage floor, promoted up a resize of working time of the basic education teachers, leading to the SEDUC-AM standardize the years 2013 and 2014 in the workload sharing. This master‟s thesis intends to present an experience through perception of teachers who experienced it. Thus, the research aims to know the effects of regulation of designation of the teachers related to daily routines professional and personnel who worked in the class regency. In presenting the structure of the State Department of Education and Teaching Quality from Amazonas (SEDUC-AM), the focus was on the Department of Personnel Management - DGP and the professional profile of the participants directly involved in the designation actions. Brief notions were brought about designation of civil servants , based on their statutes and authors like Di Baccio (2012) and Alvarez (2012a and 2012b). The methodology used was an exploratory research with non-probability sampling by quotas and used as instruments: electronic questionnaire by e-mail, document analysis of laws, opinions and normative statements, besides the authors as Mont'Alvão, Souza and Neubert (2011), and Raymond Tardif (2000), Malhotra (2011) and Vieira, Castro and Junior (2010) in the theoretical framework. The analysis of data collected from perceptions presented by teachers didn‟t reveal any change in personal routine in relation to their leisure activities, but revealed changes in professional routines to take part in several school spaces. The sharing workloads focused on a greater quantity of contract teachers; negative influence on educational planning in teaching activities; prevented the teachers participate in all meetings and educational activities of the schools in which were assigned in the same shift on different days, even though considered normal receptivity of school principals. It was predominantly non-concordance of the teachers with the regulation implemented in 2013 and 2014 school years in SEDUC-AM. Finally, perceptions analyzed led to the construction of an Educational Action Plan (PAE) as a proposal for the implementation of school activity projects to completion of certain workloads involving the school community as a whole in the macro and micro levels of education.

Behavioral Application-dependent superscolor core modeling / Modélisation comportementale dépend de l’application pour cœurs superscalaires

Velásquez Vélez, Ricardo Andrés 19 April 2013 (has links)
In recent years, the research focus has moved from core microarchitecture to uncore microarchitecture.
