Insulating the exterior wall of historic buildings : analysis of the Park Inn Hotel

Haun, Katherine K. January 2008 (has links)
Insulating the exterior wall of an historic property can have the benefits of increasing thermal comfort for occupants as well as reducing energy use for heating and cooling. Concerns expressed by preservationists that insulation can lead to the degradation of the building structure or its historic fabric. Using the Park Inn Hotel, an early twentieth century commercial property designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the application, feasibility, ramifications and potential benefits of applying insulation to the exterior wall was studied. Analysis for insulation includes evaluation of the historic characteristics, construction of the exterior wall, heat loss calculations, and how moisture will be transported through the wall. It was found that the key to determining if the exterior wall of a historic building can be insulated successfully without damage to the historic characteristics of the building or to the building itself, is in understanding how the building was designed and how it deals with moisture. With a thorough understanding of these elements, one can ascertain if insulating the exterior wall of his/her historic building is appropriate. / Department of Architecture

Alternative constructions of masculinity in American literary naturalism

Stryffeler, Ryan D. 29 June 2011 (has links)
This project asserts that male Naturalist authors were not “hypermasculine” acolytes of strident manhood, but instead offer alternative constructions which they portray as less traumatic and more cohesive than prevailing social notions of normative male behavior. I maintain that the rise of the concept of manhood advocated by Theodore Roosevelt in the early decades of the twentieth century contributed to this misconception, for it generated a discourse of “manly” individualism which became equated with socially acceptable performances of masculinity for many Americans. My first chapter illustrates the gradual evolution of an individualistic, violent, and strident concept of manhood, which I label “strenuous masculinity,” through the rhetoric of Theodore Roosevelt. The second chapter explores the ways in which Stephen Crane’s fiction illuminates the trauma and confusion inherent in strenuous concepts of manhood. Many of Crane’s stories, like “Five White Mice,” demonstrate the failure of individualism, while others, like “The Open Boat,” document a more positive construction of what I call “homosocial manhood.” In my third and final chapter, I attempt to prove that Richard Wright’s early texts showcase a range of possible outcomes of black male attempts to stand up to racial oppression. I document that Uncle Tom’s Children and Native Son both depict a continuum of confrontation, with individual violence on one end of the spectrum and non-violent group protest on the other. Furthermore, because individual resistance is consistently equated with the suffering and death of the protagonists, my project implies that strenuous manhood also fails to provide a site for effectual and sustainable opposition to the negating forces of racial oppression. / Theodore Roosevelt and the transformation of American masculinity -- "The youth leaned heavily on his friend" : alternative constructions of masculinity in Stephen Crane's fiction -- Richard Wright's early fiction as a rejection of the racial oppression of strenuous manhood. / Department of English

Naturen, vetenskapen och förnuftet : upplysningens dialektik och det andra moderna

Nilsson, Per January 2001 (has links)
The topic of this study is one specific area where the tension between instrumental rationality and value rationality becomes prominent: the question whether we have a rational responsibility for nature or not. Such a responsibility cannot be derived from instrumental reason, but it is argued that it can be derived from discourse ethics and communicative rationality. The study begins with an examination of Georg-Henrik von Wright's cultural criticism. It is argued that his subjectivist view of values limits reason to the realm of instrumental rationality. Horkheimer and Adorno's theory of instrumental reason is examined. They claim that instrumental reason, through the negative dialectics of the enlightenment, have created a vacuum with regard to values. Marcuse's anthropological solution to the problem of values, and his theory of an emancipatory science and technology, are examined and rejected as Utopian. The philosophy of Jürgen Habermas is examined, and it is shown how he solves the problem of his predecessors through the dual framework of work and interaction. His hypothesis of three knowledge- constitutive interests is analyzed, and it is concluded that a general theory of communication is needed in order to solve the problem of value rationality. It is shown how Habermas later theory of communicative rationality and discourse ethics overcomes the shortcomings of his earlier theory. It is argued, among other things, that his theory of communicative rationality is compatible with a correspondence theory of truth, ontological realism and epistemological fallibilism. Discourse ethics makes a rational discussion of values and norms possible. It is argued that it solves the problem of value rationality, but without providing a definition of the good or the right. It is shown that revisabilty is an important part of discourse ethics. This is manifested in the hypothetical status of discourse ethics, and in the revisability of the norms proposed. It is argued that we are in fact able to rationally propose a norm, which demands responsibility for nature within the framework of communicative rationality and discourse ethics, although such a norm must be the result of the outcome of a rational discourse and is itself, revisable. / digitalisering@umu

Organic Architecture And Frank Lloyd Wright In Turkey Within The Framework Of House Design

Sonmez, Filiz 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Nature has been a source of inspiration for many architects, one of them being Frank Lloyd Wright. He re-interpreted the principles of architectural design by searching nature and uncovering its hidden dimensions to introduce his idea called organic architecture, at the onset of the twentieth century. This thesis aims to discuss the offspring of this idea in Turkey, with the awareness of the fact that the Turkish examples of Vernacular and Local architecture have always displayed great concern towards nature. The developments subsequent to the recognition of organic architecture and Wright in the Turkish Architectural arena are surveyed with reference to significant discussions, competitions, exhibitions, conferences as well as concrete examples of architectural practice. Throughout the study the discussions related to Modernism in Turkey are also referred to taking the misconception of organic architecture into consideration. Since the meaning of and the interpretations concerning organic architecture are different from those made in Europe and the USA, some Turkish architects have also conceived organic architecture different from Wright&rsquo / s understanding and interpreted it from a merely formal perspective. Wright&rsquo / s approach to &lsquo / house design&rsquo / , which transforms confined, formal, symmetrical boxes into flowing spaces, is focused in comparison to Vernacular and Local examples in Turkey, and the works designed by Contemporary Turkish architects are selected to investigate the application of the principles of design and characteristics introduced by Wright. The concept of space, use of material, relation of the building with its environment, functional requirements and constructional concerns are studied within this context.

This work is a result of research that envisions finding relations between Cartography and Differential Geometry. It takes as its starting point the problems surrounding the Mercator Projection and explains their influence in the history of calculus and differential geometry in the analysis of works of Pedro Nunes, Edward Wright and Gauss. The lack of labor prevented the original analysis of the true method used by Mercator in the construction of its projection. In the treaties, on Certain Questions of Navigation and the Letter of Defensam Marear traces of the contribution of the work of Pedro Nunes are found in the construction of the Mercator Projection and Certaine Errors in Navegation, Edward Wright presents a mathematical justification for the problem. The study of the book General Investigations of Curved Surfaces reveals that the treatment given to the mapping results obtained by the Gauss geodesic survey of Hannover city was the basis for many of his works. The knowledge of Cartography and Astronomy acquired in the field experience, may have taken Gauss to the formalization of the general theory of the surfaces curves and with this it was possible to translate the law of the projection of Mercator in modern language

Gallano Ciampaglia. Razões de uma arquitetura / Galiano Ciampaglia. Reasons for an architecture

Fernanda Ciampaglia 10 April 2012 (has links)
\"Galiano Ciampaglia. / \"Galiano Ciampaglia. Reasons for an architecture\" studies an architect that identifies as bases for his profession, his own father\'s occupation, as a master - mason that worked for Ramos de Azevedo. Together with his partners, Jacob Ruchti e Miguel Forte, Galiano Ciampaglia (born 1913) is connected to the history of the city as one of the designers of IAB-SP\'s main office. He is also a graduate of Mackenzie Engineering School\'s first class of architect\'s officially recognized in São Paulo by the Ministry of Education and Health. Drawn from the scraps of nearly a century, the essence of the study is primarily historic. The differentiation in this case is to add to this Frank Lloyd Wright admirator and a residential specialist, a personality and background at the same time pragmatic and erudite, fundamental to the understanding of his work and heritage.

Le théâtre comme vision du monde : essai d'interprétation de l'oeuvre dramatique de Norbert Mobyem Mikanza / The theatre seen as a vision of the world : an attempt at interpreting the dramatic work of Norbert Mobyem Mikanza

Mombo Mvunzi, Louis 28 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the way the author Nobert Mobyem Mikanza considers the world surrounding him and how he conceives the art of theatre. This study falls into three parts. The first one is a historical and panoramic view of the congolese theatre. Its importance consists mainly in situating the part played by the play wright Norbert Mobyem Mikanza and in pointing out the originality of his theatrical work. The second part deals with the study of the form, that is how the plays are set and organized, these elements being the fable, the characters, the actions, the time, and space, the language, all that helps converging theis meaning to the audience. The third part entitled « deeper structures » is an analysis of the dramatic works of Norbert Mobyem Mikanza. His works port rays no thing but a fight, an unegual one, in which social and moral issues come in conflict with antisocial and immoral issues, not anly in the Congolese society but also further in the African society as a whole.
