Violence gratuite et adolescents-bourreaux : Réception, traduction et enjeux de deux romans suédois pour adolescents, en France, au début des années 2000 / "Unprovoked violence" and "nasty adolescents" : Reception, translation and challenges of two Swedish novels for adolescents in France in the early 2000s

Alfvén, Valérie January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of Swedish literature for adolescents in the French literary scene in the early 2000s. The sociology of literature constitutes the main theoretical framework of this thesis. Drawing from examples that broach the sensitive topic of "unprovoked violence" as it is treated in two Swedish novels for teenagers, Spelar död [Play Death] by Stefan Casta and När tågen går förbi (Train Wreck) by Malin Lindroth, this thesis shows how these novels are innovative in Even-Zohar’s sense of the term, as addressed in his Polysystem Theory (1990). By introducing "unprovoked violence" and violent teenagers via a realistic genre, such works filled a vacuum in the French system and injected a new dynamic into it. This dynamic makes it possible for new literary models to be introduced in the system and to change the standards of that system. The analyses of the French and Swedish receptions of the two novels mentioned above show that they gave rise to a moral panic in France, which is not an unusual thing to happen in periods of ongoing change. This also clarifies the differences in norms between the two systems. The French system tends to reject dark topics, while the Swedish wishes to discuss them. The investigations of the translations of unprovoked violence show that adherence to Swedish norms determine the translation’s adequacy (Toury), which may be part of the reason for the stormy reception the two works received in France, and their undergoing censure. The position of translators and publishers in the literary system also plays a major role for a translated text not being censured during the transfer from one system to another. Even if the Swedish titles translated into French are few, this thesis shows that the impact of Swedish literature on adolescents in France is certain. By introducing new and sensitive topics, such novels could be early markers of an evolution of the French field of literature for adolescents.

Moral and Spiritual Values in a High School Anthology of Literature

Kelsay, Terrence Eugene 01 August 1960 (has links)
For some years now the need for the emphasis of moral and spiritual values in our public schools has been recognized by the Kentucky Department of Education. The department has given encouragement to numerous research projects and summer workshops held for the purpose of finding an answer to the problem of emphasizing moral and spiritual values in public education. The concern for this need has informally become known as the “Kentucky Movement.” This study was not undertaken with the thought of introducing new programs in our high schools. The teaching of moral and spiritual values should be done through the curriculum and the school activities as they now exist. If the English teacher is sensitive to life-values and endorses the excellent position of the Second Workshop on Moral and Spiritual Values in Education held at the University of Kentucky in 1950 on his subject, he will have a wonderful time working out lesson-plans slanted toward bringing out those values. It is up to the teacher to work out, according to his own teaching field, the procedure he will use. Basic help can be received in workshops and other study groups where evaluations of success and failure in like situations take place, but still, the teacher must depend on his own individual ability.

ENVISIONING YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE : A STUDY ON TEACHING ENVISIONMENT IN THE ESL-CLASSROOM

Heier, Karolina January 2017 (has links)
This essay is based on Judith A. Langer’s many years of literacy research and her concepts of ‘the literate mind’ and ‘envisionment building’ in the classroom. In addition to Langer’s theories, I consider several other strategies for reading, some of which have evolved from Langer’s ideas and are adapted to fit the teaching of English for Swedish upper secondary school. Furthermore, I discuss the benefits of teaching a foreign language with the help of literature in general and Young Adult (YA) literature in particular. Working with YA literature in the classroom can not only help students develop a greater empathy towards others, but is also well suited for teaching reading strategies to teenagers. In the analysis, I demonstrate a didactic approach with the help of extracts from Ruta Sepetys’ Between Shades of Gray (2011). My findings indicate that reading Young Adult literature can benefit teenagers’ personal growth as well as their language learning and general knowledge. Lastly, I assert that envisionment building can both lead to reevaluation of the readers themselves as well as to a greater understanding of different texts and the readers’ perception of the historical and contemporary world.

Do You Fit the Alloy Mold? The Homogenization of Structure and Audience in the Television Adaptations of 'Gossip Girl,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' and 'The Vampire Diaries'

Murray, Caitlin 25 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the ways in which the television adaptations of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries become more homogenized during the adaptation process, thus contributing to an implied exclusivity from which Alloy, Inc.—the media and marketing company that owns these products—might benefit. This paper points out the ways in which the three products become structurally similar to one another during the adaptation process through the implementation of soap opera conventions. An exploration of consumption and class in each of the three works reveals an emphasis on class-based exclusivity in the adaptation process. Finally, a focus on portrayals of race within the source texts and their respective adaptations reveals the ways in which African American characters are presented as invisible, outsiders, or antagonists, thus creating products that become more exclusive on a race basis.

Moraes, Marcia Cristina Almendros Fernandes 07 December 2012 (has links)
Objective: To investigate the contribution of expression and recreation activities during hospitalization periods for the family, social, affective, school and occupational life among adolescents and young adults with complete cleft lip and palate (CLP) submitted to surgeries and hospitalizations at HRAC/USP. Material and Method: The sample was composed of 53 untreated individuals with complete unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate, without other disorders, aged 14 to 23 years, living in the Southeast region of Brazil and submitted to three or more surgeries at the Hospital, being the latter in the period from 2005 to 2009. An interview was especially designed and applied by the examiner, addressing demographic data obtained from the records, open and multiple choice questions, addressing the expression and recreation activities offered to the patients during hospitalization. The interviews were transcribed and the responses were plotted and analyzed as to their content, with quantitative and qualitative analysis of data. Results: Most interviewees were males (69.81%), with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (66.04%), aged 20 to 23 years (45.28%), from the State of São Paulo (73.58%), of upper low socioeconomic level (73.58%), lived with their families (86,79%), had incomplete or complete high school (67.93%), 62.26% were still studying and 64.15% had some professional activity. Harry Potter and the Fat Stereotypes / Harry Potter och De Tjocka Karaktärerna : En Analys av Stereotyper inom Fantasyserien

Hanna, Olsson January 2019 (has links)
In the field of research within film studies which consider how aspects such as gender or race affect the portrayal of a character, the aspect of characters' body sizes are not always taken into account. By analysing the fat characters in the popular children's and young adult film series about Harry Potter, I bring attention to the fact that the use of stereotypes is significant in these characterisations, and further contributes to the marginalisation of this particular group of people. I looked specifically at what the characters had in common with each other, and if they adhered to already established stereotypes concerning fat people, and found that the one thing they all share is a lack of academic or intellectual skill to varying degrees, which is in line with the common stereotypes of fat people as dumb. I further analysed the differences between the fat men and fat women in the series, and found that fat men were a far more common occurrence than fat women, and that fat girls did not even exist in these stories. This is not surprising, as the exclusion of fat women and girls is abundant in mainstream culture.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ariane Vicinanca Fornasin.pdf: 848773 bytes, checksum: db0b7ade0380be01de59ff8457b7bd1f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-02-05 / The objective of the present study was to assess if competitive activity represents a source of stress for sportsmen in the armed forces, based on a survey of stress symptoms. The study included the participation of 162 male military personnel in the 17-20 age range, divided into two groups: Athletes in the military (GMA) and non-athletes in the military (GM), each consisting of 81 participants. In order to ascertain the level of stress, the Stress Symptoms Inventory (ISSL) was used along with a questionnaire that was different for each group, consisting of open-ended questions. It was noted that 58.02% of the GM participants and 80.25% of GMA athletes did not present symptoms of stress. The main factors which could have contributed to this outcome were a balanced diet of food which they receive in the Army Cadet Preparatory School (EsPCEx), the making of the career decision, the stability that this career affords and the practice of physical activity. However, the level of military personnel with symptoms of stress in the GM group is 41.98%, and 38.28% of these are in the resistance phase. Although the percentage of participants with stress is high, when compared with samples from other studies, it is found that the index recorded is below that observed in young adults. In comparison with the GMA group, the index of stress was even lower. It may be concluded that sporting activity is a factor that lessens stress in young military personnel.

The influence of anthropometric factors on postural balance: the relationship between body composition and posturographic measurements in young adults

Alonso, Angelica Castilho 24 May 2012 (has links)
O comprimento do tronco cefálico explicou 6% do deslocamento no sentido antero-posterior. The maintenance of posture is a constant challenge for the human body, because it demands a system capable of responding quickly and efficiently, even in unstable situations, avoiding falls and maintaining balance. Objective: The present study evaluated the influence of anthropometric characteristics and gender on the postural balance of adults with irregular physical activity, in an erect semi-static position standing on two feet, with eyes open and eyes closed. Methods: One hundred individuals aged 20-40 years of both genders underwent anthropometric assessment, body composition measurements (bone densitometry) and a postural balance test (posturography). Results: The correlation analysis showed low correlations between postural balance and anthropometric variables: height, weight, BMI, length of limbs: lower and upper and trunk-cephalic length, base of support, percentage of fat, tissue, fat, lean mass, Bone mineral composition, bone mineral density, waist-hip ratio and age. The multiple linear regression analyzes demonstrated that the whole group (female and male) height explained 12% of the medial-lateral displacement, 10% of the speed of oscillation and 11% of the displacement area. The length of the trunk head explained 6% of displacement in the anteroposterior direction. With eyes closed, his support base and height explained 18% of medial displacement of lateral height explained 10% of the speed of displacement and 5% of the scroll area. Conclusion: Postural balance measured using posturography was little influenced by anthropometric variables with eyes open and eyes closed. Height was the anthropometric variable that most influenced postural balance, both in the whole group and separated according to gender. Postural balance was more influenced by anthropometric factors among men than among women
