Dynamic plasmonic metasurfaces in the visible spectrum

As visual display technologies move closer to producing true three dimensional displays, pixel technologies need to be ever smaller and more functional to keep pushing the boundaries. Plasmonic metasurfaces have been shown to control the phase, amplitude and/or polarisation of incoming electromagnetic radiation. Nano-fabrication advancements have resulted in the fabrication of the building blocks of such metasurfaces at nano-scale dimensions, allowing the surfaces to interact with visible light, opening up applications in visual displays. As pixel sizes shrink, smaller colour filters will be required. The excitation of plasmonic resonances in metallic nano-structure arrays have resulted in colour filters an order of magnitude smaller than what is currently commercially available. As colour filters, plasmonic metasurfaces offer numerous advantages over pigment-based colour filters used in modern commercial liquid crystal (LC) displays, including environmental, size and longevity factors. Furthermore, exploiting the wavelength and polarisation dependant scattering of nano-structures, optical components, including lenses, waveplates and holograms containing sub-wavelength pixels have been demonstrated in the visible wavelength spectrum. The metasurfaces are able to mould optical wavefronts into arbitrary shapes with sub-wavelength resolution by introducing spatial variations in the optical response of the light scatterers. The applications demonstrated so far are, on the whole, static devices, that is to say their optical properties may not be altered post fabrication. To realise the full potential of plasmonic metasurfaces to visual applications the devices must be made active. By activating structural colour surfaces, not only may pixel densities potentially be increased simply by removing the need for separate red, green and blue filters, but a new class of high definition ultra-thin display devices may be accessible, whilst the dynamic manipulation of the wavelength and polarisation properties of nano-scattering elements would open up the possibilities to create sub-wavelength holographic pixels. This thesis investigates ways to activate static metasurfaces for colour, flat optic, and holographic applications. First, methods of dynamic control of the structural colour of plasmonic nano-hole arrays are investigated. By combining nano-hole arrays with liquid crystals, transmissive electrically tunable LC-nanohole pixels operating across the visible spectrum with un-polarised input light are experimentally demonstrated. An output analyser in combination with a nematic LC layer enables pixel colour to be electronically controlled through an applied voltage across the device, where LC re-orientation leads to tunable mixing of the relative contributions from the plasmonic colour input. Furthermore, exploiting the strong surface anchoring effects between an aluminium surface and LC molecules a twisted nematic LC cell, using a metallic grating as a combined colour filter, electrode and alignment layer, was shown to act a variable amplitude colour filter. The colour of these pixels was improved greatly utilising a grating-insulator-grating structure unique to this work. Second, a new process for fabricating aluminium nano-rod structures embedded in an elastomeric medium, with high spatial accuracy, is presented. The process is used to create nano-rod plasmonic resonator arrays whose optical properties may be altered by mechanical deformation. The pattern transfer process is further utilised to create dynamic optical elements, including nano-rod arrays for colour filters, tunable focal length Fresnel zone plates and photon sieves, and stretchable holograms with dynamic replay fields.

Färgtemperaturens påverkan på trivsel i bostadsområden / The effect of colour temperature on well-being in residential areas

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att få en inblick i hur färgtemperaturen kan påverka personers trivsel i bostadsområden. Detta är för att få en förståelse om hur ljusets färgtemperatur påverkar personers trivsel, positiva eller negativa effekter och vilka skillnader som syns med det olika färgtemperaturerna. Metod: Två metoder användes i studien. Ett frågeformulär skapades med 8 självtagna bilder med tillhörande frågor. Efter att deltagarna svarat på enkäten, genomfördes intervjuer med fem deltagare som valdes ut genom hur det svarade på frågorna och fick utveckla sina svar. Resultat: Resultaten visar att det finns en skillnad mellan varmt och kallt ljus, i hur det påverkar trivseln. Hur det påverkar trivseln beror dock på vad deltagare anser själva är en trivsam belysning. Ur frågeformulär var det en stor variation av deltagare som kopplade låg färgtemperatur till komfort och hemlik atmosfär. Högre färgtemperaturer kopplades mer till trygghet och modernt ljus. Ur intervjuer visade resultatet att fler deltagare föredrar lägre färgtemperatur i bostadsområden, då det känns mer behagligt och mer passande. Färre antal föredrog högre färgtemperaturer och kopplade det till att det lyser upp mer av omgivningen och blev mer följsamt för ögat. Deltagare kopplade mycket till omgivningen då bilderna visade olika områden. Mycket hus, bilar, belysning ifrån hus och grönskan bidrog mycket till att deltagare valde bilderna och kopplade det till hus ljuset spred sig i omgivningen.  Konsekvenser: Studien ger kunskap om färgtemperaturens roll för utomhusbelysning och vikten av den. Detta gynnar boende och gående inom bostadsområden. Genom att veta vilken färgtemperatur som föredras, kan belysning projekteras och planerare kan skapa den belysning som befolkningen anser är nödvändig och trivs bäst med.  Begränsningar: Studien är begränsad till att undersöka endast färgtemperatur i bostadsområden. Intervjuer genomfördes på distans i digital plattform, med hänsyn till rådande situation av covid-19. / Purpose: The purpose of the study is to gain an insight into how colour temperature can affect people's well-being in residential areas. This is to gain an understanding of how the colour temperature of light can affect well-being, whether it affects positively or negatively, if there are differences and in what way it differs. Method: Two methods were used in the study. A questionnaire was created, with 8 self-taken pictures with additional questions. After the participants responded to the questionnaire, interviews were conducted with five participants who were choose by how they answered and were allowed to develop their answers. Findings: The question asked had a broad answer. The results show that there is a difference between low and high colour temperature, how it affects well-being. However, how it affects well-being depends on what the participants consider to be a pleasant lighting. From the questionnaire, there was a large variety of participants who linked low colour temperature to comfort and homely atmosphere. Higher colour temperatures were linked more to security and modern light. From interviews, the results showed that more participants prefer lower colour temperature in residential areas, as it feels more comfortable and more appropriate. Fewer numbers preferred higher colour temperatures and linked it to the fact that it lit up more of the surroundings and became more compliant to the eye. Participants connected a lot to the surroundings as the pictures showed different residential areas. The pictures included a lot of houses, cars, lighting from houses and greenery, which contributed a lot to participants choosing the pictures and linking it to how the light spread in the surroundings. Implications: Conducting a study entails knowledge within the role of colour temperature for outdoor lighting and the importance of having it. This benefits residents and pedestrians in residential areas, by knowing which colour temperature is preferred, lighting can be projected, and planners can create the lighting that the population considers necessary and are most comfortable with. Limitations: The study has mainly focused on the colour temperature in residential area. Interviews were conducted remotely on a digital platform, considering the prevailing situation of covid-19.

Accessibility, With or Without Colour : A qualitative look on existing accessibility guidelines for colour vision deficiency and its effect on Swedish e-health services.

Purpose WCAG is a set of guidelines to assist in developing websites accessible for everyone, for example people with colour vision deficiency (CVD). However, there are few guidelines relevant for CVD and with increasing dependant on websites the importance of accessibility on these websites increases as well. The purpose of the research study is therefore to investigate the impact the relevant guidelines for CVD in WCAG 2.1 has on Swedish health care websites and what the consequences are for people who live with CVD. Method An initial literature study was conducted to gain knowledge of previous findings and also evaluate the best approach for the research study. The research study is based on a qualitative approach to gain a deep understanding of the area and to gain insight into the feelings and experiences of the people affected. The methods used to gain the necessary knowledge are an evaluation of 1177.se and e-tjanster.1177.se also observations and interviews around these two websites. Findings The results show that WCAG 2.1 has a positive impact on Swedish health care websites, as well as on users with CVD. From evaluations, interviews and observations it is concluded that 1177.se and e-tjanster.1177.se are easy to perceive for people with CVD. Implications This research study was limited to the mobile version of the websites. However, the results could be different if the research was conducted on the desktop version due to the different structure of the websites and the inclusion of a cursor on desktop. The evaluation could have been affected by the sampling of pages while the interviews and observations should not have been. Limitations The research study was limited to Swedish health care website 1177.se and its subdomain etjanster. 1177.se. Further it was decided to evaluate the mobile version of these websites, although the elements should look similar on desktop and mobile. While not the initial intention, due to over representation of red-green CVD the study was also limited to people with red-green CVD. Also, the experience of browsing the web on a mobile device was considered to reduce the variables for frustrations. Further research For further research, another selection of WCAG guidelines could be considered to evaluate etjanster. 1177.se since the results shows that 1177.se’s and e-tjanster.1177.se's weaknesses seems to be in the structure of the website. A study researching the “blue-yellow colour blindness” compared to websites could contribute with new, relevant knowledge as well.

Crossmodal Perception of Emotion in Audiovisual Scenes of Knocking Sounds

Sound is an important aspect of storytelling. Previous studies have investigated the emotional perceptions of knocking sounds, in relation to the colour and material of the door. This study will build on these projects and investigate two new visual factors, colour grading and the speed at which a door opens, to determine how they affect emotional perception in isolation, and then how they interfere with five expressive knocking sounds. This was done by conducting four experiments. The first two experiments investigated the emotional perception of the visual factors. In the last two experiments, the visual factors were combined with the expressive knocking sounds, in order to investigate how the conveyed emotions of these visual factors interfered with the perceived emotions of the knocking sounds. The results showed that the knocking sounds had the strongest influence over the overall perceived emotion. However, the colour gradings were able to influence and interfere with the perceived emotion of the knocking sounds, while the door opening speeds did not have an effect. / Ljud är en viktig del i historieberättande. Tidigare studier har utforskat den känslomässiga uppfattningen av ljud i form av knackningsljud, samt hur dörrens färg och material påverkar den uppfattningen. Den här studien bygger på dessa projekt och utforskar två andra visuella faktorer i form av färgsättning (colour grading) och hastigheten en dörr öppnas med. Den känslomässiga uppfattningen av dessa faktorer undersöks, samt hur de påverkar fem knackningsljud med avsedda känslor. Det här undersöktes med hjälp av fyra experiment. I de två första experimenten undersöktes den känslomässiga uppfattningen av de två visuella faktorerna enskilt. I de två sista experimenten, kombinerades de visuella faktorerna seperat med de fem knackningsljuden. Här undersöktes det hur de känslorna som förmedlades av de visuella faktorerna påverkade de förmedlade känslorna av knackningsljuden. Resultatet visade på att knackningsljuden hade mest influens över den övergripande uppfattade känslan. Däremot så influerade och påverkade färgsättningen den uppfattade känslan av knackningsljuden, medan dörrhastigheten inte gjorde det.

Digital Image Processing via Combination of Low-Level and High-Level Approaches.

With the growth of computer power, Digital Image Processing plays a more and more important role in the modern world, including the field of industry, medical, communications, spaceflight technology etc. There is no clear definition how to divide the digital image processing, but normally, digital image processing includes three main steps: low-level, mid-level and highlevel processing. Low-level processing involves primitive operations, such as: image preprocessing to reduce the noise, contrast enhancement, and image sharpening. Mid-level processing on images involves tasks such as segmentation (partitioning an image into regions or objects), description of those objects to reduce them to a form suitable for computer processing, and classification (recognition) of individual objects. Finally, higher-level processing involves "making sense" of an ensemble of recognised objects, as in image analysis. Based on the theory just described in the last paragraph, this thesis is organised in three parts: Colour Edge and Face Detection; Hand motion detection; Hand Gesture Detection and Medical Image Processing. II In Colour Edge Detection, two new images G-image and R-image are built through colour space transform, after that, the two edges extracted from G-image and R-image respectively are combined to obtain the final new edge. In Face Detection, a skin model is built first, then the boundary condition of this skin model can be extracted to cover almost all of the skin pixels. After skin detection, the knowledge about size, size ratio, locations of ears and mouth is used to recognise the face in the skin regions. In Hand Motion Detection, frame differe is compared with an automatically chosen threshold in order to identify the moving object. For some special situations, with slow or smooth object motion, the background modelling and frame differencing are combined in order to improve the performance. In Hand Gesture Recognition, 3 features of every testing image are input to Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), and then the Expectation Maximization algorithm (EM)is used to compare the GMM from testing images and GMM from training images in order to classify the results. In Medical Image Processing (mammograms), the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and clustering rule are applied to choose the feature. Two classifier, ANN and Support Vector Machine (SVM), have been applied to classify the results, in this processing, the balance learning theory and optimized decision has been developed are applied to improve the performance.

Den här studien undersöker hur olika element i visualiseringsbilder kan justeras för att bättre vägleda kunden vid köp av nyproducerade lägenheter. I dagsläget finns bristande förståelse för hur sinnesstämningar kan användas för att skapa visualiseringar bättre anpassade för ändamålet. Denna undersökning studerar hur människans olika sinnen samarbetar med varandra och hur dessa kan kopplas  till upplevelsen av arkitektur, rent fysiskt men även genom tredimensionella digitala miljöer. Genom sinnesstämningar skapar vi miljöer som tydligare behagar intresserade spekulanter formade av vår samtid.  Genom metoder som litteraturforskning, observationer och tester med fokusgrupper har vi fått en klarare bild kring sinnenas påverkan över hur saker hänger ihopmen framför allt hur vi upplever vår värld. Vi har studerat samtidens marknad och användandet av färg och andra detaljer för att skapa en specifik stämning. Genom dessa marknadsundersökningar har nyttig kunskap upptäckts vilket lett fram till en djupare förståelse inom området. I samarbete med fokusgrupper har visionsbildens betydelsen för valda målgruppen: den unga vuxna människan klarnat, en inblick i marknaden för dem samt givande respons i utbyte.  Resultatet visar att det går att dirigera ögats fokus och utifrån den hela upplevelsen av en visualiserad bild. Ögat reagerar på specifika element så som färg, dock inte riktigt så tydligt som först uppskattat. Det är även svårt att dra slutsatser inom området då en stor del av resultatet beror på upplevelsen. För varje individ skiljer sig upplevelsen och därav resultatet. Det finns dock övergripande kopplingar över vad människor tycker om och dessa element kan användas. Bostadsmarknaden är anpassad efter ett svenskt ideal vilket beskriver dess enkelhet, funktionalitet samt tydliga minimalistiska stil. Detta är attribut som förstärker dess sterila uppbyggnad, både fysiskt men även i digital marknadsföring. Flera olika sinnesstämningar kan skapa flera olika scenarier, trots detta faller det ideala resultatet tillbaka på varma soliga sommardagar. / This study investigates how different elements in visualization images can be adjusted to better guide the customer when buying newly constructed apartments. At present, there is a lack of understanding of how moods can be used to create more appropriate visualizations. This research studies how the different human senses cooperate with each other and how these can be linked to the experience of architecture, physically but also through three-dimensional digital environments. Through sensory moods, we create environments that more clearly appeal to interested speculators shaped by our time.  Through methods such as literature research, observations and tests with focus groups, we have gained a clearer picture of the influence of the senses on how things are connected, but above all how we experience our world. We have studied the contemporary market and the use of colour and other details to create a specific mood. Through this market research, useful knowledge has been discovered, leading to a deeper understanding of the field. In collaboration with focus groups, the significance of the vision image for the chosen target group: the young adult has been clarified, an insight into the market for them and rewarding feedback in return.  The results show that it is possible to direct the eye’s focus and from there the whole experience of a visualized image. The eye reacts to specific elements such as colour, but not quite as clearly as first estimated. It is also difficult to draw conclusionsin this area because a large part of the result depends on the experience. For each individual, the experience differs and hence the result. However, there are general links to what people like and these elements can be used. The housing market is adapted to a Swedish ideal which describes its simplicity, functionality and clear minimalist style. These are attributes that reinforce its sterile structure, both physically and in digital marketing. Several different moods can create several different scenarios, yet the ideal outcome falls back on warm sunny summer days.

Paletto: An Interactive Colour Palette Generator : Facilitating Designers’ Colour Selection Processes

Digital growth and the adaption of internet-based solutions, particularly artificial intelligence and machine learning, have dramatically changed the way design is done today. This rapid change in technology has challenged the level of automation, which influences the human-automation interactions with the available colour-design tools (academic and commercial). As colour design and selection are known to be one of the most critical steps of any art or design journey, the currently available tools use one over the other approaches, from the automation-levels spectrum, when it comes to contextual search for colour palettes, colour-extracting, and colour compatibility. On the one hand, fully automated approaches could exclude the designers’ intervention; on the other hand, fully manual approaches could be affected by human errors and weaknesses. Both approaches tend to have problems when used in colour design tools, such as restricting the designers’ freedom, overwhelming designers with information-overload and option-widget clutter that exist in the interfaces of such tools, or limiting designers by the functionalities offered by the tool based on its purpose, causing it to partially support certain parts of the designers’ colour selection process rather than the whole process. The thesis focuses on investigating the possible solutions for balancing the automated and manual methods for generating colour palettes and supporting the designers’ non-standardised colour-selection processes while tailoring the solution to intellectually stimulate and engage designers who work in different design fields, in comparison with the Adobe Explore Page–which is one of the most well-known and established colour design tools in today’s market and one of the applications that offers a contextual search feature. To fulfil the purpose of this research, a web-based application was prototyped (named Paletto), which consists of the requirements for enabling the rapid generation and exploration of colour palette variations, supporting end-users to contextually search for palettes, and allowing users to apply constraints (via a preference selection list) for a holistic palette adjustment. Afterwards, the proposed application was evaluated with 20 individuals from the target audience, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches to prove the concept according to participants’ acceptance, estimate Paletto’s effectiveness on their workflow and design process, examine their engagement and experience when completing the exploratory tasks, and gather additional insights about the design or the conceptual design and implementation of the application. Paletto generally received positive responses towards (1) the accuracy and relevance of its search results, (2) the selection feature and its adaptability and flexibility for human interventions, and (3) the system’s feedback in terms of information accessibility (e.g., search word and number of pages in the pagination). However, the palette generation feature had partially negative responses where participants showed annoyance, confusion, and thought it was complicated. At the same time, several participants appreciated the diversity of the generated palettes and the conceptual design of Paletto in general. Paletto found to effectively facilitate the colour-selection process and designers’ workloads in several areas, such as: fulfilling the end-user goals of producing quality palettes to be used in design projects; resources-efficiency (e.g., money-preserving, effort facilitation, and time-saving) for inspirational image gathering; automatic colour extraction and palette generation; providing freedom and support of decision making to explore colour combinations and variations via the iterative preferences selection; supporting colour-pattern identification in the selections; providing variation and relevant results when searching inspirational image gathering with accurate colour extractions that represent the searched images. Moreover, Paletto proved to offer greater user engagement and a better user experience in comparison with Adobe’s Explore Page. This was due to the felt involvement and the continuous interactivity offered by Paletto’s search and preference-selection features that allowed iterative palette generation and modification. In conclusion, the evaluations indicated some pain-points and gaps in the current design that were discussed in this thesis, and are accordingly recommended to be investigated in future work.

Nicolas Roeg : chromatic cartography

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the function of colour in film through three films by British director Nicolas Roeg. To this end, this thesis has the following three correspondent aims: first to consider the theoretical relationship between colour and film within film studies as a discipline. Second, to propose a means of discussing film colour outside the dominant approach of restoration and degradation. Third to explore how Roeg’s implements colour within three of his films Performance, Don’t Look Now, and finally Bad Timing, and the ideological and aesthetic questions that emerge through a consideration of colour in these works. By looking at colour and Nicolas Roeg this thesis will not only present a critical response to the research question but it will also fill a small gap in the current dearth of work that exists on both colour and British cinema in the 1970s.

Towards bio-inspired photonic vapour sensors

Many highly-evolved bio-photonic structures, which tailor the propagation of light by coherent optical scattering, have been investigated. These natural designs, which have many diverse ecological functions, are becoming increasingly studied as sources of innovation and inspiration for a range of scientific, technological, and commercial applications. The brilliant blue colour reflected from the scales of the Morpho butterfly is just one example of nature’s ability to manipulate light and colour strongly. In this thesis, the photonic structure present in the scales of the Morpho butterfly is investigated as a source of bio-inspiration in the pursuit of high- performance photonic vapour sensors. The intention of this is to outperform classical sensor approaches which traditionally suffer from poor selectivity between chemical species. By measuring the change in reflectance from the iridescent scales of the Morpho butterfly, both a sensitive and, critically, a selective response to chemical vapours can be obtained. Here, the origin of this unique multivariable vapour-induced optical response is investigated, and this biological template is further explored as a source of innovation for the mature field of chemical sensing. By using synergy between experimental and theoretical techniques, a mechanism for the sensitive and selective response of the Morpho butterfly’s scales to different chemical vapour environments is elucidated. This mechanism arises from combined chemical and physical effects within the photonic nanostructure. Following this, demonstrations of this biological template’s vapour response attributes, which have large and desirable diversity in the optical responses, are made. These response attributes are visualised in the spectral changes associated with optical excitation conditions, such as from different angles and polarisation states, and also in the temporal response profiles. Finally, theoretical sensor designs that outperform the Morpho scales are described. Simple principles that might improve the currently unacceptable levels of selectivity in contemporary sensor implementations are outlined and the vapour response of a Morpho-inspired photonic structure is presented.
