Through interviews with professionals of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and research based on the literature, it was possible to have the dimension of computational scientific contribution in relation to the education of the deaf. Today, those who directly participate in the education of deaf student process faces many challenges. We can highlight, for example, the pedagogical methodology focused exclusively for a fully deaf person uses visual approach. Computer technology come being a good alternative at the contribution to the people education. Interconnecting the educational context and computational technologies, arises numerous alternatives that make the teaching-learning process more efficient. Good examples found in the literature point to the use of collaborative systems as a good alternative to the teaching-learning process, especially with the use of mobile technology. The proposal presents a study about the Libras and the Portuguese as a second language, to contextualize a little about the origin of the Libras and the present methodologies for the Portuguese teaching to the deaf. In the technological context, it was conducted a survey of the theoretical referential about collaborative systems, concepts and definitions of important terms in the area. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in order to investigate the current state of the art when it involves mobile collaborative learning with teaching of Portuguese for the deaf. The collected material guided the progress of the project, directing for the application of collaborative learning techniques in Portuguese language activities, with a mobile collaborative tool to support the implementation of these activities. This paper presents in detail, the development of the application in all its evolution and finally it was conducted a case study to validate the issues of the research proposals in a real context with deaf students. The results of this study are presented and discussed, showing the analyses based on the issues raised and the information collected during the intervention. Hoje, quem participa diretamente do processo educacional do aluno surdo enfrenta inúmeros desafios.

Three aspects were taken into consideration in the composition of this diagnosis: (1) a study based on the Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistic (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 1968) concerning the verbal agreement of the 1st person plural produced by 6th graders, (2) a survey carried out through a questionnaire of the beliefs and attitudes of Portuguese teachers of the school as to the use and study of this linguistic phenomenon and (3) an analysis of the pedagogical approach proposed by the coursebook chosen by the school. The results of the sociolinguistic study showed a considerable variation of the 1st person plural agreement in the student?s speaking and writing. The answers to the beliefs and attitudes test indicated that the pedagogical action around this variable phenomenon has concentrated on correction and reading practices. The analyzed coursebook does not consider the verbal agreement phenomenon explicitly, but presents an extensive grammatical study of verbs from which it can be concluded that it is up to the school teaching the explicit realization of bending 1st person plural. In developing the proposal itself, the theoretical methodological foundation was based on association between the Model of Continuous (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004), with an emphasis on the continuous stylistic monitoring and didactic-pedagogic approach of the collaborative apprenticeship (BEHRENS, 2013).

Teachers' Understanding of Culturally and Linguistically Differentiated Instruction for English Language Learners

Itwaru, Poorandai 01 January 2017 (has links)
A large school district in the northeastern United States struggled with teaching middle school English Language Learners (ELLs) to succeed in reading and writing. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate teachers' perceptions regarding what they could do to increase academic achievement for ELLs. The conceptual framework emerged from Weimer's learning-centered teaching, which aligns with Dewey's social constructivism. Ten purposefully sampled teachers agreed to be interviewed in the attempt to answer the research questions about instructional strategies teachers believed were best to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate instruction for ELLs and what teachers believed could be done to improve ELLs' classroom engagement and motivation for increased academic achievement. Analysis and open, thematic coding of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and teachers' lesson plans were used to create seven themes, including differentiated instruction, background knowledge, challenges and difficulties, home-school connection, technology for diverse learners, administration and faculty collaboration, and professional development. Findings included participants' desire for meaningful professional development where differentiated instruction is modeled to address the cultural and linguistic needs of ELLs. The project was created to deliver this training for all teachers at the site, focusing on culturally and linguistically differentiated instruction, sheltered instruction, and collaborative learning. The findings and project may promote positive social change by improving instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse learners at the local site and similar school districts. Higher academic achievement would provide better opportunities for ELL students.

Apport des Systèmes Multi-Agent et de la logique floue pour l'assistance au tuteur dans une communauté d'apprentissage en ligne / Contribution of Multi-Agent Systems and Fuzzy logic to support tutors in Learning Communities

Chaabi, Youness 11 July 2016 (has links)
The growing importance of online training has put emphasis on the role of remote tutoring. A whole new area of research, dedicated to environment for human learning (EHL), is emerging. We are concerned with this field. More specifically, we will focus on the monitoring of learners. The instrumentation and observation of learners activities by exploiting interaction traces in the EHL and the development of indicators can help tutors to monitor activities of learners and support them in their collaborative learning process. Indeed, in a learning situation, the teacher needs to observe the behavior of learners in order to build an idea about their involvement, preferences and learning styles so that he can adapt the proposed activities. As part of the automatic analysis of collaborative learner¿s activities, we describe a multi agent approach for supporting learning activities in a Virtual Learning Environment context. In order to assist teachers who monitor learning processes, viewed as a specific type of collaboration, the proposed system estimates a behavioral (sociological) profile for each student. This estimation is based on automatic analysis of students textual asynchronous conversations. The determined profiles are proposed to the teacher and may provide assistance toteacher during tutoring tasks. The system was experimented with students of the master "software quality" of the Ibn Tofail University. The results obtained show that the proposed approach is effective and gives satisfactory results.

A study on assessing the learning processes of knowledge construction-oriented computer-supported collaborative learning environment

Yang, Sen Chi Unknown Date (has links)
The major purpose of the present study was investigate the learners would have the differences of the progress of knowledge construction and problem discussion, which were under the three different guided knowledge construction in the computer-supported collaborative learning environments, the three learning environments including wiki, knowledge-based annotation learning system, and Knowledge Forum. A secondary purpose of this study was to examine if these three different learning environments would build the variety atmospheres of knowledge construction, and then the deficiency in the computer-supported collaborative learning. Finally, the conclusion drawn above should be proposed the efficient policy and suggestion in relation to the effective teaching of knowledge construction. The method to carry out this study was using an experimental research. The participant in this research were 19 postgraduate students enrolled in executive master of digital systems in one national university. In this experiment, all participants experienced the three different guided knowledge construction in the computer-supported collaborative learning environments in order, each differs from one another, including, wiki, knowledge-based annotation learning system, and Knowledge Forum. Furthermore, all subjects focused on the discussion and shared the progress of the knowledge construction and the results of the accomplishment by searching and observing the above three varied environments. The data of knowledge construction and problem solving were to conceptual encoded and processed the sequential analysis in order to observe the evolution of the progress of knowledge construction of all subjects, and to estimate the level of interaction of problem discussion. Lastly, we used the auxiliary semi-constructed interview and the result of sequential analysis to work with the cross-validation. The findings suggest that the participants produced the conclusions with coordinated knowledge construction which appeared in a certain quality, and this result indeed helped learners to grow-up in the coordinated knowledge construction. Additionally, Knowledge Forum firstly developed well standard under the congruent design and tactic of teaching in these three computer-supported collaborative learning environments. And then Knowledge Forum would be even more proper to discuss the problem solving. However, there is an insufficient part which needs to be strength of the three guided computer-supported collaborative learning environments for the complete computer-supported learning environments, most particularly, to be able to stimulate the subjects would go deep into the discussion in order to achieve the more depth of the knowledge construction, at the same time require the preferable instructional design and learning strategy. On the basis of the findings we sum up the few suggestions: As teacher, this study would be a reference to choose computer-supported collaborative learning environment when teach the coordinated knowledge construction, and then to address the suggestion in relation to the future research.

Effects of knowledge building on students’ understanding of the concept of “idea”

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of knowledge building pedagogy on college students’ understanding of the concept of ‘ideas’. Knowledge building principles (Scardamalia, 2002) and Knowledge Forum (KF) technology were employed to support and record the process of idea generation, idea co-construction and idea elaboration. This study adopted a case study design. Participants were 41 undergraduates who engaged in a course titled “Introduction to Living Technology” for one semester. Data sources and analyses included: (1) students’ online activities in KF, which was assessed using Analytic Toolkit and social network analysis in order to understand the process of interaction among students; (2) students’ online discourse data, which were scored using idea evaluation scale (see Dean, Hender, Rodgers & Santanenm, 2006) including four dimensions--novelty, workability, relevance and specificity; moreover, students’ ideas were content-analyzed using practical inquiry model including four levels--triggering event, exploration, integration and resolution (Garrison, Anderson & Archer, 2001); (3) pre-post survey with five open-ended questions that assessed students’ understanding of the concept of ‘idea’ in several aspects (e.g., definition, purpose, and source); moreover, students’ answers were analyzed by open coding using Popper’s three-world epistemological framework. The findings were as follows: (1) knowledge building and technology was found helpful for students to generate ideas, facilitate idea interaction and improve ideas; (2) engaging students in knowledge building was likely to enhance students’ diverse perceptions about ideas, and students tended to see ideas as improvable objects of value for potential knowledge construction; (3) idea co-construction processes, emphasizing both the quality and quantity of ideas, were also likely to enhance students’ diversified perceptions about ‘ideas’; (4) knowledge building environment was beneficial for students to implement knowledge co-construction through exploration and integration. To conclude, knowledge building environment provided an open space for students to share ideas and made idea elaboration more easily; besides, via co-construction process, students’ understanding of the concept of ‘idea’ becomes more diverse, and tended to recognize ideas as tangible, social epistemic entities.

Getting smarter music : a role for reflection in self-directed music learning

Lebler, Don January 2007 (has links)
Conservatoires all over the world are re-examining their educational roles and practices in a changing cultural and economic context, including re-evaluating their function as sites of relevant learning. This dissertation by publication contributes to this re-examination by investigating understandings of assessment, evaluative reflection, the relationship between know-how and knowledge, autonomous learning, community of practice and the student experience of these pedagogies in one Queensland conservatorium. The study is presented in the form of a synopsis and five publications, with additional data that will form the basis of further post-doctoral publication. It is focused on non-traditional pedagogical processes operating within a bachelor of popular music program, processes that have been intuited by the academic teacher who is also the author of this dissertation. What these processes have in common is the philosophical rejection of teacher-led pedagogy and an insistence upon, and scaffolding of, self-directed student action and reflection. The aim of the dissertation, in keeping with the rationale for a professional doctorate, is to subject this approach to systematic theoretical and empirical scrutiny, and thereby to further refine and strengthen the practices in terms of their capacity to engage young people in self-directed approaches to quality music making. John Biggs's presage/process/product learning model (1999) provides a structure for this systematic evaluation of the pedagogical work. The study understands the learning characteristics that students bring to the program, combined with the structures and pedagogical approaches in place in the program, to be the key presage elements; the learning activities (including assessment as learning) that occur within the program are the key process elements; the key products are the learning outcomes for the students and the ongoing development of the program and pedagogical approaches informed by reflection on empirical data including data collected as part of this research. The study demonstrates the significance of recognising and valuing presage and process elements that enable students to perform from the basis of their intuitive know how while being recorded, and then apply their knowledge-based critical reflection skills to an appraisal of their own work and the work of their peers while hearing the recording played back. While not displacing the teacher as mentor and critical friend, this moves responsibility for learning to the student as a self-monitoring, strategic decision-maker about the nature and quality of their learning products. The program requirement that students write meaningfully about the process appears to encourage the embracing of both conscious and unconscious ways of knowing and doing. As a documentation of this type of teaching, the study presents an argument for a broader incorporation of student-led pedagogy into higher education in general and conservatoria in particular. It concludes that aspects of education that enhance students' abilities to learn, including self- and peer assessment, self-directed learning, reflective practice, and both independent and collaborative work that incorporates program-wide learning, are likely to enhance integrated creative practice. This project has made it possible to disseminate a scholarly engagement with such processes through publication in academic and professional contexts.

Exploring a Community Partnership: A Narrative Inquiry into the 2004-2006 Semester Programs Between Artpace San Antonio and Louis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School

Leake, Maria De La Luz 08 1900 (has links)
This qualitative inquiry explores a community-based art partnership called the semester programs that took place between Artpace San Antonio and Louis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School from 2004 until 2006. This narrative inquiry used interviews with artists and former Fox Tech art students involved in our program, along with my teacher/ researcher reflections, to make meaning from the data. The artists involved in the semester programs were Gary Sweeney, Daniel Guerrero, David Jurist, and Ethel Shipton. Former students interviewed include Eloy McGarity, Rosa Leija, John Contreras, and Jennelle Gomez, while I, Maria Leake represent the voice of the art teacher. Our stories of experience were analyzed and connections between situated learning theory, creativity theories, community-based art education, and memory research were all recognized as being exhibited during our community partnership programs. There were seven patterns and themes that were noted as occurring within each semester program, as well as notable distinctions. The patterns and themes from the data analysis suggest that our community partnership reflected the following: learning and creative expression went beyond the individual; networks of support and communication were available to all participants; challenges were acknowledged; empathy between participants was an unintentional outcome; working together as a community of practice facilitated personal interactions and connections; learning and creative expression went beyond the traditional curriculum; and educational benefits were realized by all participants.

Mansur, André Fernando Uébe January 2011 (has links)
This work presents an alternative approach to academic practical learning in Higher Education, using the concepts of the Complex Thinking and social networks to propose Metodological Routes for Environment in Network for Learning. As experimenting field, it is used an academic environment of Supervised Traineeship in a College Administration Course. Having the support of Ecosystemic Development Methodology (Moraes and La Torre, 2006), a methodology and analysis development was performed, based on the Principles of Complexity (Morin, 1999) to propose a Complex Environment in Network for Learning (ACRA, in Portuguese) and verify its effectiveness. The Complex Environment in Network for Learning (ACRA, in Portuguese) reveals itself as a consequence of the Learning Personal Environments (APA, in Portuguese) for effectively considering the Principles of Complexity in its conception. The APA, on its turn, are a consequence of the Learning Virtual Environments (AVA, in Portuguese), for not depending on decisions and control of the administrators and/or professors. With the aim to propose the ACRA, it was necessary to create the Movement of the Five Personal Postures to promote a Conversion of the Look of the researcher and an instrument of analysis of the Movements of Complexity in ACRA, named Fields of Analysis of the Complexity in ACRA with the purpose to show up the ecosystemic interactions among the academic actors of the studied environment. It is proposed, still, a materialization of the ACRA in Supervised Traineeships of graduation courses in Administration through the Collective Knowledges Network (ReSa, in Portuguese), a complex learning environment that emerges from the concepts of the Complex Thinking and of Social Networks. According to the conclusions, it is possible to notice how the proposed system has fulfilled the goals to promote in some of the Principles of Complexity in the studied environment, just as the possibilities of future studies.
