A theoretical and empirical analysis of the effects of deregulation in the 1980's on S&L asset portfolios

Hudgins, Sylvia Conway January 1987 (has links)
This dissertation is a theoretical and empirical investigation of the actual changes in Federal S&L asset portfolios following the deregulation of the 1980's which loosened the restrictions on the amount of non-housing related lending that Federal S&L's could undertake. In particular the study focuses on the effects of deregulation and the forces promoting and constraining the individual S&L's expansion into non-housing related assets. The theoretical model provides a framework for the empirical examination of the deregulation in the DIDMCA of 1980 and Garn-St Germain Act of 1982. The theoretical model is an adaptation of the Mingo and Wolkowitz (1977) banking model. The peculiarities of the S&L industry are embodied through adaptations of the Mingo and Wolkowitz (1977) model which emphasize after-tax profit maximization (tax laws reward specialization in housing related assets), constrain diversification into non-housing related assets, and differentiate between mutual and stock associations. Using the method of Lagrange multipliers, an expression is obtained for the effect of a change in after-tax profits for a relaxation of the constraint on diversification which becomes the focus of the analysis. By integrating the Lagrange multiplier with economic and regulatory controls, systems of regressions are developed which examine the changes in asset portfolio composition for Federal associations using balance sheet and income statement data between 1979 and 1983. The findings and implications of the empirical analysis are summarized as follows: 1. The tax laws do not appear to have constrained the diversification. 2. Specialization effects with respect to housing related assets appear to have constrained the diversification into non-housing related assets. 3. Non-housing related assets and liquid assets appear to be substitutes. 4. Stock associations, on average, have expanded into non-housing related assets to a greater extent than mutual associations. 5. The changes in liability legislation appear to have restrained the diversification into non-housing related assets. 6. Large associations appear more able to acquire the expertise needed to diversify. 7. Profitability appears to be correlated with the expansion into "new products." / Ph. D.

Dating human occupation and adaptation in the southern European last glacial refuge: The chronostratigraphy of Grotta del Romito (Italy)

10 February 2020 (has links)
Yes / Grotta del Romito has been the subject of numerous archaeological, chronological and palaeoenvironmental investigations for more than a decade. During the Upper Palaeolithic period the site contains evidence of human occupation through the Gravettian and Epigravettian periods, multiple human burials, changes in the pattern of human occupation, and faunal, isotopic and sedimentological evidence for local environmental change. In spite of this rich record, the chronological control is insufficient to resolve shifts in subsistence and mobility patterns at sufficiently high resolution to match the abrupt climate fluctuations at this time. To resolve this we present new radiocarbon and tephrostratigraphic dates in combination with existing radiocarbon dates, and develop a Bayesian age model framework for the site. This improved chronology reveals that local environmental conditions reflect abrupt and long-term changes in climate, and that these also directly influence changing patterns of human occupation of the site. In particular, we show that the environmental record for the site, based on small mammal habitat preferences, is chronologically in phase with the main changes in climate and environment seen in key regional archives from Italy and Greenland. We also calculate the timing of the transitions between different cultural phases and their spans. We also show that the intensification in occupation of the site is chronologically coincident with a rapid rise in Mesic Woody taxa seen in key regional pollen records and is associated with the Late Epigravettian occupation of the site. This change in the record of Grotta del Romito is also closely associated stratigraphically with a new tephra (the ROM-D30 tephra), which may act as a critical marker in environmental records of the region. / Leverhulme Trust (F/0 0235/I) and by a Natural Environment Research Council ORADS radiocarbon dating award (NF/2011/2/7).

Analyse structurale, pétrologique et métallogénique de la minéralisation aurifère néoprotérozoïque du Granite de Passa Três, Campo Largo – PR, Sud du Brésil : implications sur les relations granite/minéralisation / Strutural, petrological and metellogenic analysis of the Passa Tres granite neoproterozoic gold deposit, Campo Largo – PR, Southern Brazil : Implications on the relationships granite/mineralisation

Dressel, Bárbara 27 July 2018 (has links)
The Passa Três Granite is situated in southern Brazil (Paraná State) and presents a NNE-SSW elongated shape. This intrusion is emplaced within metapelites of the Mesoproterozoic Açungui Group (Ribeira Belt, Mantiqueira Province), between the N40E trending Morro Agudo and Lancinha faults. Gold mineralisation is composed of centimetric to metric quartz veins with fluorite, sulphides and carbonates. The main objectives of this work are i) to understand the model of formation of the mineralised veins systems taking into account the relationships between magmatism, hydrothermalism, deformation and mineralogy in space and time; ii) the characterization of the nature, source and emplacement conditions of the ore fluids; and iii) the characterization of a metallogenic model for this singular deposit. In order to reach these purposes, the methods to be applied include, beyond the structural geology and field works: petrography, U-Pb zircon (LA-ICP-MS) and 40Ar-39Ar muscovite geochronology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron-microprobe analyses (EPMA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), isotopic analysis of sulphur (δ34S), and microthermometric and Raman analysis of fluid inclusions. Structural data showed the coexistence of two major normal mineralised vein systems, one N-S and the other one E-W, with dips of 60-75ºW and 45-70ºS, respectively. Both systems are interpreted to be contemporaneous and conjugated. Orebodies form sigmoidal geometries that resulted of the opening of pull-aparts as a consequence of the normal movements along low-angle fault planes. High-angle dip of the global mineralised structures is explained by the succession of the pull-aparts. Four mineralogical stages resulted in the formation of the mineralised system: phase 1 [quartz 1 + fluorite], phase 2a [quartz 2 + pyrite 2a ± gold ± chalcopyrite ± aikinite ± fluorite ± sphalerite ± muscovite], phase 2b [quartz 2 + pyrite 2b + gold + chalcopyrite + aikinite + ankerite ± sphalerite ± fluorite ± muscovite] and phase 3 [quartz 3 + ankerite + calcite + molybdenite ± aikinite ± muscovite ± fluorite]. Gold occurs as invisible gold and as native grains within fractures that affect pyrite 2a and 2b, commonly associated with chalcopyrite and aikinite. Alteration related to the mineralisation includes muscovite/quartz/pyrite (greisen type alteration) and sericite/carbonato/clinochlore (phyllic alteration) assemblages. The δ34S values of pyrite crystals (from -0.1‰ to 1.1‰) indicate that the sulphur in this deposit may have a magmatic origin. This hypothesis agrees with the systematic observation, within the upper part of the granite (drill holes and superior levels of the mine), of structures typical of magmatic-hydrothermal transition such as aplite-pegmatite systems, quartz veins with K-feldspar border, quartz concentration of stockscheider type and unilateral solidification textures (UST). Geochronological data confirm this hypothesis with U-Pb zircon ages (611.9±4.7 and 611.9±5.6 Ma for medium grained granite facies (GEM) and microgranite (GEF), respectively) and 40Ar-39Ar muscovite dating (veins with K-feldspar border: 612.9±2 to 608.8±2 Ma; mineralised veins: 611.7±2 to 608.8±2 Ma; barren vein: 608.4±2 Ma), that are very close. These ages indicate that the granite emplacement, the magmatic-hydrothermal fluid release and the formation of gold-bearing quartz veins occur during a time lapse of approximately 5 Ma, between 613 and 608 Ma. The mineralisation (611 to 608 Ma) coeval to granite crystallization (612 to 610 Ma), the association of gold with Bi minerals (aikinite), the strong structural control for veins and magmatic-hydrothermal transition features at the roof of a small granitic intrusion suggest that the Passa Três gold deposit shares several similarities with intrusion-related gold deposits.

Kupfer im Erzgebirge

Bittmann, Hartmut Carsten 12 May 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The mountains Erzgebirge have been characterized by mining industries for centuries. Many publications describe the natural mineral deposits and the historical mining conditions. Special regards are thereby paid to silver and tin ore. However an extensive summary of copper deposits and mining is not available. In which types of mineral deposits copper is mineralised and in which districts copper can be proved? Therefore, the intention of this study was a synopsis about the copper deposits in the mountains Erzgebirge by comparing literature and maps. In addition, mining districts and mining quantity of copper between 1470 and 1750 should be arranged. For this purpose, material from the Bergarchiv Freiberg and other literature about regional mining was used. The research showed that copper minerals, nearly exclusive sulphide-mineralised, can be proved in every type of mineral deposits. In terms of the zonal distribution, there are centres visible. In spite of the closely relation to silver ore in the smelting processes copper was not very important in many mining districts. A larger quantity of copper ore was won in Schneeberg-Oberschlema, in Breitenbrunn, near Annaberg, near Marienberg, near Freiberg and in Sadisdorf. The study shows an overview of deposits and historical mining of copper ore in the Saxon and Bohemian parts of the Erzgebirge. So the work can be a basis for continuative studies about the importance of copper for the Saxon mining history.

Geology and petrology of the Catface porphyry Cu-Mo deposit, Vancouver Island, and linkages to the Paleogene Cascade Arc

Smith, Colin Michael 12 April 2012 (has links)
The geology, petrology and geochemistry of Catface porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposit, located on the west coast of Vancouver Island are examined in detail. Detailed core logging and sampling was carried out to characterize the geometry and identity of different intrusive phases and alteration styles prevalent during the emplacement and formation of the deposit, as well as their geochemical affinity. Early- and late-stage potassic alteration is identified, as well as main-stage sodic-calcic and calcic-sodic alteration. Four distinct Paleogene intrusive phases vary from quartz diorite to granodiorite in composition. The rocks are broadly calc-alkaline, weakly peraluminous to moderately metaluminous, and have typical arc geochemical affinity. The timing of emplacement and mineralization is constrained by U-Pb and Re-Os geochronology at 40.4-41.4 Ma and 40.9 ±0.2 Ma, respectively. All four Paleogene Catface intrusive phases were emplaced close in time with a direct temporal correlation to mineralization. The chalcopyrite- and pyrite-bearing miarolitic cavities in the Halo Porphyry intrusive, combined with U-Pb and Re-Os dates suggest this intrusive phase is the most likely source of mineralizing fluids. The intrusions were emplaced at depths of less four kilometers in the crust, as evidenced by the presence of miarolitic cavities and confirmed through amphibole-plagioclase thermobarometry, which record conditions of 615–700 °C and <200 MPa. The lack of primary anhydrite and hematite, and the presence of pyrrhotite in the ore system indicate a reduced magmatic-hydrothermal event. The SO3 contents in apatites are <450 ppm, indicative of a degassed and/or sulphate-free (reduced) magma. The assemblage K-feldspar-quartz-biotite-ilmenite yields oxygen fugacities (fO2) which are 0.5 to 3.0 log units below the quartz-fayalite-magnetite (QFM) buffer at an assumed pressure of 300 MPa; orders of magnitude more reduced than typical porphyry deposits. Parental magmas to the Catface deposit were either derived from intrinsically-reduced mantle, or more typical oxidized arc magma that was subsequently reduced during ascent and emplacement. Further isotopic work is required to determine which process contributed to the reduction of these magmas in an arc setting. Nevertheless, recognition of reduced porphyry-related magmatism on west-central Vancouver Island is of similar age to that of North Fork (~36.8-38.9 Ma) deposit in Washington suggesting a consanguinity of reduced magmatism with the Paleogene Cascade arc. / Graduate

Expansion of the Swedish Deposit Return System for plastic packaging : Challenges and enablers along the value chain of plastics / Expansion of the svenska pantsystemet för plastförpackningar

Rodriguez Novoa, Esteban Alejandro January 2020 (has links)
Plastic materials are widely used in different applications by the industry. Given its different properties, there is a wide range of utilization opportunities. From an environmental perspective, some of these properties imply a challenge for the recycling of these materials. Over the years, Deposit Return Systems (DRS) have been formulated and developed aiming to increase recycling rates of these materials. This study aims to determine if the expansion of the DRS for plastic materials can tackle current technical and logistical challenges that hinder the recyclability of these materials in Sweden. Specifically, it maps the actors and processes involved in the plastic value chain, identifying current challenges that affect the recyclability of the materials but also opportunities to increase the rates of recycling. Finally, after studying and characterizing different DRS implemented around the world, recommendations are given on what types of DRS expansions could be suitable for the Swedish context. Based on a literature review the current Swedish plastic value chain is studied and technical and logistical challenges are identified along it. Simultaneously the study investigates technological developments and innovations intended to improve the recyclability of the plastic materials. One of the main challenges identified is the fragmentation along the value chain, which is a barrier to utilizing the system to its full potential in terms of generating recyclable material as well as establishing well-functioning value regeneration of the materials. This information is useful to discussions on a future expansion of the DRS in Sweden. Likewise, after describing the different DRS options studied, recommendations are given for its implementation. The analysis concludes that given the current context that includes the start-up of a large sorting facility, the most promising option would be to opt for a design & sorting incentivizing DRS that is relying on the conventional waste management and does not require major investments in infrastructure. Other options are not discarded, but it is recognized that these may be more costly or more technologically demanding, also requiring more research to give an assertive assessment.

The regulation of deposit-taking financial institutions : a comparative analysis of the United Kingdom, Germany and South Africa

Jordaan, Michael 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 1997. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Standard financial literature contains various explanations for the unique role of deposit-taking intermediaries in an economy. None of these reasons adequately explains the extensive degree of banking regulation evident in practice. The nature of a deposit, which guarantees capital repayment independent of bank performance, uniquely incentivises banks to be exposed to financial risks. In the absence of appropriate regulation, banks may be tempted to assume an unacceptably high level of risk that could ultimately result in bank failure. Thus, the regulation of banking risks is justified in terms of the public interest theory whereby banking regulation seeks to avoid the market imperfections arising from informational asymmetries and "domino" externalities associated with bank failure. Accordingly, the rationale of banking regulation lies in the protection of consumers and in preserving the stability of the financial system. Direct monetary controls, on the other hand, impact adversely on the risk-management activities of banks. The framework utilised to analyse and compare banking regulation consists of three broad categories namely: preventative regulation, protective regulation and monetary requirements. Preventative or prudential regulation is aimed at managing the levels of risks assumed by banks. This form of regulation relates to entry requirements; limitations on certain business activities; the disclosure of risk-related information; the adequacy of capital resources; portfolio restrictions on risk assets; and the sufficiency of liquidity. Protective regulation is concerned with the immediate protection of depositors and maintenance of overall financial stability once a bank has failed. lt consists of crisis management measures and deposit insurance schemes. Direct, and hence inappropriate, monetary requirements are variations in reserve asset requirements, as well as interest rate and credit controls. The banking systems of South Africa, the United Kingdom and Germany were chosen to perform a comparative analysis of financial regulation. The London financial markets are mature and a large variety of banks are regulated in a flexible manner by the Bank of England. By contrast, the strictly regulated German banks dominate their domestic financial system. South Africa is a hybrid of the former systems with a modern banking industry operating in well developed financial markets and supervised according to advanced risk-management considerations. The analysis of preventative and protective regulation in all three financial systems indicates that banking regulation is indeed concerned with the regulation of banking risks. The efforts of the Bank for International Settlements to harmonise regulation across domestic financial systems has contributed significantly to improved regulatory techniques for the management of these risks. None of the three systems make use of direct monetary requirements which suggest awareness of the costs associated with such regulation. A number of recommendations are made to improve financial regulation in South Africa: extension of regulatory coverage to include other types of financial intermediaries who also engage in risky activities; further relaxation of exchange control regulations which restrict the foreign exchange risk management; the adoption of a formal deposit protection scheme; increased consolidated supervision by a single regulatory authority with executive powers; further deregulatory measures in instances where regulations are not appropriate from a risk-management perspective; and re-regulation to the extent that the risk-management activities can be regulated more efficiently.

A lithogeochemical study of northern Sweden and the Kiruna and Malmberget iron-apatite ore deposits

Lundh, Jon January 2014 (has links)
The iron apatite mineralizations of northern Sweden are mainly situated in supracrustal rocks and are thought to have formed during approximately the same time as the major plutonic suites in northern Sweden. In this thesis the Malmberget iron apatite ore deposit have been compared to the Kiruna iron apatite ore deposit to see whether the role of hydrothermal processes are different between the two ore districts. Also, since it has proven problematic to distinguish between the different mafic and ultramafic members of the major plutonic suites in northern Sweden (i.e. the Haparanda suite (1.94-1.85 Ga), the Perthite-monzonite suite (PMS) (1.87 Ga) and the Edefors suite (1.80-1.79 Ga)), a second goal is to trace the distribution and distinguish between these suites. Major elements, REE and trace elements have been studied along with polished sections from the ores and oxygen isotopes of magnetites from the ore districts to trace the ore formation process and separate between suites. All ore districts display a close similarity in geochemistry between host rocks and magnetites, especially regarding the REE pattern. Oxygen isotopes show that samples from the Kiruna district plot exclusively at positive δ18O-values with the majority of them at values < 1‰. Samples from the Malmberget district display δ18O-values either close to the igenous range or at slightly negative values. However, samples that display very low or negative δ18O-values show signs of either high temperature hydrothermal alteration, oxidation or crustal contamination. The δ18O composition along with textural observations from the polished sections and geochemistry, points towards a magmatic origin for these deposits. No apparent evidence has been found to support a primary ore formation by hydrothermal process in any of the districts studied. Regarding the suites, normalized spider plot patterns of REEs and trace elements served as a basis for subdivision into groups by similarities in key identification parameters. Several patterns are characterized by a pronounced Eu-trough while the middle- to HREEs display a rather flat trend, criteria that are related to rocks from the Haparanda suite, while samples with positive Eu-anomaly (Eu/Eu* > 1) and a nearly flat trend from La to Pr with a marked positive peak at Sr and generally less enriched in LILE, are consistent with the Edefors suite. Also, the Edefors suite generally display low concentrations of both Th and U but are somewhat enriched in Sr with relation to Pr. No distinct geochemical features could help to separate between the Haparanda and the PMS suites.
