At present, South Africa, in contrast with countries abroad has a serious disposition regarding the availability of literature dealing with churchgrowth as such. Due to a lack of professional churchgrowth consultants, churchgrowth had been neglected and a gap of deficiency has occured thus hindering the different stages in churchgrowth.
This study is an in - depth, theological and critical study of churchgrowth as well as the managerial aspects thereof. Much devotion has been endeavoured upon this thus delivering a model example with which churchgrowth consultants could embark upon
congregational analysis and profiling. In colaboration with leaders and members of congregations, long - term planning can be done. All this in a South Africa which had been deprived from this valuable service for so long. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Practical theology)

The missiological dimensions of African ecclesiologyAndriatsimialomananarivo, Solomon 11 1900 (has links)
The growth of the Church in Africa, namely at numerical level, is tremendous. However, we notice that her impact on society and public life is not so visible as the growth is, since Christian values are embodied by Christians. Yet, the Church has huge human resources, pastors, missionaries, lay leaders and theologians. The challenge for the Church in Africa is to incarnate and inculturate these values and the living message of the Gospel. In this thesis we question the co-operation between the Church and mission agencies, between native pastors and western missionaries. We notice that since 150 years, there has been a huge gap between these two entities. This is due to the fact that Theology and Missiology look like two lines that never meet. This situation leads us to revisit not only the current paradigm Church-Mission but also the current link between Theology and Missiology. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. Pastoral care and counselling of the person in chronic painJacobs, Alvean Illinois 11 1900 (has links)
People expenencmg chronic pain encounter increases m needs and endure the consequences of failure to satisfy needs. In much of the management of people with chronic pain, chronic pain is considered an abstract phenomenon with little attention given to the human experience. Numerous literature focus on a mechanistic reductionistic approach in management of chronic pain.
Most literature is written by medical practitioners, nurses and psychologists from a health-care oriented methodology, whereas minimal research literature was contributed from a pastoral care and counselling perspective. This dissertation explores the needs and feelings of people with chronic pain to identify their needs at the various developmental
stages of their pain experience, and within their relevant ecosystems, in order to develop a pastoral response. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology)

Funksionering van 'n missionêre geloofsgemeenskap / Operation of a life-transforming congregationJansen van Vuuren, Dawid Schalk 05 1900 (has links)
The Church no longer has any significant impact on society. An analysis of the Church
morally and statistically confirms this. The situation in South Africa is so critical, that the
Church cannot afford to remain detached and uninvolved.
An explanation for this lack of impact, is that the Church has lost its identity. Its loss of a
sense of call and purpose is argued from the Gospel of Matthew.
In order to rediscover its call, the Church must find a way to evangelise and assimilate
secular people.
A historical analysis reveals that the Church is on the brink of the greatest transformation
in 1600 years. Our generation is called upon to shape the new Church paradigm.
The present structure of the institutional Church nullifies the attempt to instil its moral
values. Parson's sociological theory confirms this and proposes a more effective
paradigm, where the identity of the Church and the importance of relationships are
underscored.
It is only when the Church balances kerugma, leiturgia, koinonia and diakonia that she
effectively impacts on secular men and women.
Three processes need to be held in tension in this evangelical endeavour of the faith
community. These include ministry to the commtinity; an interactional dialogue; and a
process of assimilation and value formation, culminating in a sense of belonging to the
household of faith.
The central thesis holds that a balanced and healthy community of faith, effects a positive
transforming influence and leads to a change of values. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D.Th. (Practical Theology)

Mystik und Koinonia: Das ekklesiologisch-missiologische potential mystischer spiritualitat / Mysticism and Koinonia: The ecclesiological and missiological potential of mystical spiritualityBreidenbach, Roy 02 1900 (has links)
This work mainly asks for the potential of christian mysticism for the Ekklesia, Koinonia and
the mission of the Church. In order to this, it is considered that the term mysticism is difficult
to grasp by definition, for there is no clear definition of the term mysticism. Due to this fact
irritations and misunderstandings are caused, especially in the protestant and evangelical
Christianity, that have no traditional anchoring of mysticism in their life of faith, as it is the
case in the catholic Church for example. At this point, the work at hand defines in an afferent
first part, what christian mysticism is, in distinction to esoteric phenomena or non-christian
mysticism.
The following part asks for the practical forms of christian mysticism with reference to
four selected samples of spiritual exercises. At this place, psychological issues are considered
too, as well as the question for the mystagogy.
In the next part of this work, the relationship between the christian mysticism and
Koinonia, Ekklesia and the mission of the Church will be considered. At this point, the
occurance of community as a connecting element for these issues is in the focus of interest.
Finally, this work outlines a mystical ecclesiology, as it is now possible and
conceivable on the basis of the foregoing considerations. The potential of christian mysticism
for church development and the mission of the church will be clarified, as well as the need for
empirical research and testing of the shown theory by some practical suggestions. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / D. Th. (Missiology)

La suppléance à la source d'une ecclésiologie de l'exception / The supplying process at source of an ecclesiology of the exceptionMercury, Hervé 26 March 2014 (has links)
This work is a theological reflection on supplying canonical notion. Supplying is restricted to executive power of governance (can. 144). Hence we study the link between supplying process and "potestas sacra" and the application requirements to laypersons. We make an inventory of some cases in which the salvation of souls is bound. Their theological analysis establishes an ecclesiology of the exception from the saying : necessitas non habet legem, the membership of Church and the status of some ecclesial communities. The subsistit in and the notion of communion are clarifying. The ecclesiology of the exception is the proper field of supplying process which also occurs into the Institution through sensus fidei and charismas. Hence a reappraisal of the adage : « no salvation outside the Church ». Supplying process is an hermeneutical criterion useful to exegesis (Galatians : Paul’s place) and history (Tertullian, Cyprian : lack of potestas sacra as irreducible limit of suppletory exercise).

[en] ECCLESIOLOGY OF COMMUNION: A MULTITUDE OF FAITHFULL PEOPLE: TERESA DE LISIEUX S ECCLESIOLOGY, A RE-INTERPRETATION OF THE COUNCIL VATICAN II / [pt] IGREJA-COMUNHÃO: UMA MULTIDÃO DE FIÉIS: ECLESIOLOGIA DE TERESA DE LISIEUX, UMA RELEITURA À LUZ DO CONCÍLIO VATICANO IIMARCOS ANTONIO DE ARAUJO 19 July 2018 (has links)
[en] The Thesis wants to demonstrate the theological foundations that propose Ecclesiology of Communion for the Unit, based in the writings of Teresa de Lisieux, especially in her book Story of a Soul, and in the Theology of Johann-Adam Mohler about the Unit in the Church. We ll do a reinterpretation of the Communion Ecclesiology of Vatican II. We will explore some aspects like the Centralism of Love lived and experienced by the multitude of small souls who form the Church, presented by Teresa de Lisieux, and the argument about the Unit in the Church in the perspective of Communion by Johann-Adam Mohler, in accordance with his concrete experience. We will try to present this Ecclesial Unit taking from the notion of Multitude of Faithful in the book of Acts of the Apostles: And the multitude of them which believed were one heart and one soul (Acts 4, 32). Having an ecclesial configuration which involves all peoples in view of the universality of salvation and the multiform modes of services and ministries. We ll retake the notion of the Church as the Body of Christ presented in Patristic Theology and in the Magisterium of the Church, also present in the Doctrine of Vatican II, in consonance with the notion of God s People. The diversity of the members of this Body, for its interrelation and coverage, must be spread over all humanity, now understood as multitude of the faithful. The Unit in the Church became, in current times, one of the most significant aspects for Theology, precisely because, the character of universality of salvation and the relational expressivity between people worldwide, need of one theological grounding in the perspective of Religious Unit and the Dialogue against multiple initiatives.

Congregational polity and associational authority : the evolution of Nonconformity in Britain, 1765-1865Clark, Cullen T. January 2015 (has links)
Following the Evangelical Awakening, many of the Nonconformist traditions experienced an evolution in their ecclesiastical structure, resulting in the formation of new associations that frequently acted to establish pragmatic agencies like missionary societies, educational boards and social charities. The transition required new expressions of authority. Understanding the nature of this authority is the chief objective of this study. Chapter One introduces the various themes and goals of the study. Chapter Two explores the Hampshire Congregational Union. In addition to the Union’s structure, David Bogue and the Gosport Academy were central to this group’s identity. Chapter Three focuses on the Lancashire Congregational Union in the North West of England, home to William Roby, the central figure within Lancashire Congregationalism. Chapter Four covers the Lancashire and Yorkshire Baptist Association and the later Lancashire and Cheshire Baptist Association, where John Fawcett was the primary influence. The New Connexion of General Baptists, Chapter Five, was under the authoritative direction of Dan Taylor, a former Methodist and a zealous evangelist. Chapter Six analyses the Scotch Baptists. Peculiar among Baptists, it was created under the leadership of Archibald McLean. The British Churches of Christ, Chapter Seven, closely resembled the Scotch Baptists but were different in some fundamental ways. Finally, in Chapter Eight, patterns of associational authority among these associations will be compared and assessed. Authority among Nonconformist associations, particularly those denominations practising congregational polity, was exercised on the grounds of doctrinal purity and evangelistic expansion. As the nineteenth century continued, the organisational structures grew more complex. In turn, increased control was voluntarily granted to the organisations’ governing bodies so they might more efficiently minister. Following the Awakening, these voluntary bodies found new life as a pragmatic expression of Evangelical zeal.

Preaching as interaction between church and culture: with specific reference to the Korean churchOh, Hyunchul Henry 08 April 2004 (has links)
The Korean church, famous for her rapid growth, has begun to notice a downward trend in her growth rate since the mid-eighties. Although many reputable investigations have recently been carried out with regard to this downward slide, these investigations have overlooked the full meaning of preaching in the interaction between church and culture. In view of this, this study sets the following four aims: (1) to investigate the reasons behind church decline in terms of preaching in the interaction between church and culture in Korea; (2) to interpret preaching in the interaction between church and culture biblically, historically and theologically in order to understand the normative Christian perceptions and practices of preaching; (3) to attempt an integration between the descriptive and the normative; and (4) to propose developmental strategies for the Korean church. To achieve these purposes, two kinds of methods are employed in this study: (a) an analysis of preaching in the interaction between church and culture both in Korea and in the normative Christian sources, with the model advocated by D Browning (1991); and (b) qualitative interviewing as an empirical interpretation with a model based on the findings of Rubin&Rubin (1995). Five claims emerge from this study: (1) How do we reset the context of preaching? (2) How do we revise the present preaching theory of the Korean church? (3) How do we define and defend conversion preaching that is seemingly exclusive in contemporary pluralistic Korean society? (4) How do we rethink and re-establish the ecclesiology of the Korean church? (5) How do we formulate the Christian culture against or in the rage of worldly thoughts and cultures in Korea? This thesis concludes by proposing preaching as interaction and the preacher as an inter-actor between church and culture. Practical strategies are developed to answer the claims. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

The involvement of women in mission in the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (LCSA)Kainerugaba, Frank Odyek Godfrey January 2013 (has links)
The principle purpose of the study was to investigate the role of women in the mission and
ministry of The Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (LCSA). The researcher raised the question
of why women are viewed as inferior within the LCSA, and whether this is Biblically supported. I
investigated the distinction between men and women with regard to the church culture, tradition,
pastoral office, priesthood, and authority within the LCSA. As a general theoretical framework, I
used two theories in church mission: (1) The unity of the Church and apostolic practice as
propounded by Schenk in 1983. (2) Paradigm shifts in theology: mission as ministry by the
whole people of God as propounded by Bosch in 1991. These theories explain the mission of
proclaiming the Gospel of God as belonging to everyone (both male and female) as His
servants in the Church.
To obtain people’s views and interpretations of Scriptures, culture, church practice, and the
social reality of women’s roles in the LCSA, focus-group and individual interviews were used to
gather qualitative data from 525 respondents. The data was collected and analyzed using the
descriptive qualitative research approach. Based on the research findings in Chapter 2 (pages
37-42), Chapter 6 (page140) presents proposals for the involvement of women in the LCSA.
The findings show that participants were concerned about the topic and those women’s rights
and voices are not yet acknowledged in many societies in Southern Africa. However, the scope
of the study is limited to the LCSA, and its findings cannot be generalized. Valuable insights
were gained into the church’s traditional construction of women’s roles in the LCSA, not allowing
women to preach the Gospel and to administer the Sacraments in the Church mission work.
From a missiological study perspective, the researcher recommended that women should be
allowed to participate fully in the Church mission work. Therefore, the Involvement of Women in
Mission in LCSA was an important dissertation research topic, affecting women in Southern
Africa particularly, and potentially, in the African continent at large. / Dissertation (MA Theol)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Science of Religion and Missiology / unrestricted
