Football Crowd Behavioral Responses to a University Marching Band’s Musical Prompts

Smith, Amanda 06 September 2018 (has links)
Decades of market research have investigated how music can influence consumer purchase, food consumption, and alcoholic drinking. Before market researchers declared music an influencer of atmospheric perception, sociologists discovered the sway of music on crowd collective action in sporting events, political rallies, and societal unrest. There remains a lack of research on how live music may influence football fan behavior during a game. Therefore, this study observed the number of behavioral responses from university students elicited by a university marching band’s music prompts (N = 11) at an American university football game. By recording observations of behavior in the student section during home football games, this investigation found that from the total number of music prompts observed (n =202), 50% (n =100) of the music prompts elicited a behavioral response from the student section.

Bland puppyshippers och Orange Crushers : en studie av drivkrafterna bakom läsande och skrivande av Harry Potter-fan fiction. / Among puppyshippers and Orange Crushers : a study of the driving forces behind reading and writing Harry Potter fan fiction.

Olausson, Elin January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this Master’s Thesis is to study readers and authors of Harry Potter fan fiction, in order to answer the question of why they read and write fan fiction about Harry Potter, and which factors determine what kind of fan fiction stories they read. The empirical material consists of three qualitative interviews with fan fiction readers and authors, and a textual analysis of four internet forums for discussions about Harry Potter and fan fiction. The theoretical background is based on reception theory and reader-response criticism. The results show, that commitment to, and interest in, the source material is an important reason as to why the participants of the study read and write Harry Potter fan fiction. At the same time, most participants also feel frustration and dissatisfaction with the source material. Also, the results show that fan fiction can be a way of practising writing skills. Reading and writing fan fiction also attracts because it is fun, and because it gives an opportunity to explore how other Harry Potter fans have interpreted the source material. There are many factors that determine which stories the participants choose to read. Characters, and how they are paired with each other, play a vital role, as well as genre, rating, plot and the author’s language and writing style. Many participants read popular stories, and have favourite authors. Personal interpretation of the source material is a very important factor, since it will determine what a participant likes and is willing to accept in fan fiction. / Uppsatsnivå: D

"Rotten Culture": from Japan to China

Li, Nishang 01 May 2019 (has links)
A new sub-culture, “Rotten Culture (腐文化) ”, evolved from Japanese Boys’ Love (BL) manga, has rapidly spread in China and dramatically influenced many areas of Chinese artistic creation. “Rotten Culture” is an extension of Boys’ Love, which indicates that Boys’ Love elements not only existed in manga, but emerged in anime, movies, TV series, and so on. As a start of an analysis of this phenomenon, this thesis will focus on the core of “Rotten Culture”, Boys’ Love, which exists in Chinese manga and web fiction. The central issues addressed by this thesis are: exploring the circulation of Boys’ Love from Japan to China; examining the aesthetics and themes of some of these works; and analyzing the motivations that explain why such a huge amount of people, both professional and non-professional, have joined in creating Boys’ Love art works. / Graduate

Do grupo de fÃs: consideraÃÃes psicanalÃticas / Fans groups: some psychoanalytical considerations

Marcela Mello Ranier 26 September 2009 (has links)
The proposal of this dissertation is to understand the psychic aspects that are concerned in the dynamics of a fan club mediated by an idolatry object, taking as reference the Freudian psychoanalytic study. The love on the part of the fan can seem something inexplicable to the first view, however it is of deep importance for who tries it, so much that this fan opts to concentrate in groups returned for the cult of his/her love object, maintaining an identity common with the other participants. In the case the one that refers our research subject, what happens with the fan, it is that when joining the other ones equal that share the feeling of common admiration, is not observed of any promise or possibility of improvement of his/her life or of his/her enlargement. That subject is one of the central of our research, and, for that reason, we will treat of the own process of construction of the groups of fans and in the way of existent relationship among the participant members of the same ones, starting from the analysis of the speech of fans belonging to fan clubs. Therefore, the understanding of that feeling of the fan, so much in the literal sense as in the one of the psychic universe, it evidences, on one side, an imaginary bow that he/she has a private function for the mimicry and, for other, a condition of admiration that makes possible a recognition of the other simbolic. Another parameter of analysis of the fan clubs is the artificial groups analyzed by Freud (1921/1996), where it was verified that the fan club can be identified as a type mass that introduces as much differences as similarities in relation to these groups.

Re-interpreting Japanomania: transnational media, national identity and the restyling of politics in Taiwan

Yang, Hsin-Yen 01 July 2010 (has links)
This dissertation offers a historical and cultural analysis of the highly controversial Japanomania (ha-ri) phenomenon in East Asia with a special focus on post-authoritarian Taiwan. Despite its colonial relations with Japan and its relatively small population of twenty-three million, Taiwan has become the largest market for Japanese trendy dramas outside Japan in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Attracted by these Japanese idol dramas, pop music and fashion, many Taiwanese youths became loyal to anything Japanese. The Japanomania phenomenon in Taiwan aroused stringent public condemnation for being detrimental to national pride and was commonly regarded as a social pathology. I offer my intervention into this debate by arguing that Japanomania consumption has little to do with nostalgia towards Japanese colonization. Rather, Japanomania is best understood as a response to the particular, lived conditions of the generation of Taiwanese who came of age in the 1990s. Given the prevalence of Japanomania among this generation, and given the fact that this was the same generation of young voters who were key to the election of the first opposition party President in 2000, it is remarkable that the connections between these two significant youth movements have been overlooked in existing scholarship. Based on my research and on my own lived experience and participation in both of these movements, I argue that Japanomania discourse in fact played a crucial role in Taiwan's democratization and nation-building in the 1990s. To de-mystify the intensive consumption of Japanese popular culture in Taiwan, I critically analyze interviews, online Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), historical archives, Japanese TV dramas, and political campaign materials. Such mediated forms give us access to the fluid and mobile field of subject formation in a transitional society. I conclude that transnational culture serves as a medium for Taiwanese politics, and for the current fourth generation in particular. In addition, I suggest that transcultural consumption has political potential not only in Taiwan but also in other contexts such as the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. This dissertation tackles some of the most fundamental questions in communication studies: the influence of media on politics and the role that people play in making meaning in the context of democratization and globalization. By creating a dialog between this East Asian cultural phenomenon and Western critical theories of culture and globalization, my research also contributes to the development of a multilevel and multicultural approach to discourse, audience studies and globalization studies.

Relationships between tributary catchments, valley-bottom width, debris-fan area, and mainstem gradient on the Colorado Plateau: A case study in Desolation and Gray Canyons on the Green River

Elliott, Caroline M. 01 May 2002 (has links)
The alluvial forms of the rivers that drain the Colorado Plateau are a product of the water and sediment load that tributaries deliver to the trunk streams. Where the Green and Colorado Rivers cross structural barriers, narrow canyons have been incised. In the steep terrain adjacent to many of these canyons debris flows occur in the catchment basins of tributaries and deliver coarse sediment to the mainstem river corridor. Over time, debris flow deposits have aggraded in trunk stream valleys and created landforms known as debris fans. The sizes of these debris fans are related to the accommodation space available for fan formation. Lithologic variation in the layer-cake stratigraphy of the Colorado Plateau has led to varying valley widths. Tributary catchment, debris fan, depositional site, and mainstem river characteristics are examined over the 156-kilometer reach of the Green River through Desolation and Gray Canyons. Desolation and Gray Canyons provide some of the widest valley widths and resultant debris fan areas on the Colorado Plateau.
