A Guide to the Performance and Study of "Dialogue de l'ombre double" (1985) by Pierre Boulez (1925-1916)Miller, Brooke Laurie 08 1900 (has links)
Pierre Boulez (1925-2016) composed Dialogue de l'ombre double for clarinet and live electronics in 1985. This same year, Alain Damiens of Ensemble InterContemporain premiered and recorded the work with the help of Andrew Gerzso of Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM). The piece alternates between pre-recorded and live sections that are performed with varied levels of amplification and reverberation creating a dialogue between the parts. Boulez also includes detailed instructions for the spatialization of the pre-recorded tracks that play through six equidistant speakers that surround the audience. Furthering the complexity of this work, it is available in two published versions: version aux chiffres arabes (Arabic numeral version) and version aux chiffres romains (Roman numeral version). Each version includes much of the same musical material, but arranged in a different order. Performance of Dialogue de l'ombre double requires extraordinary technical facility and musical understanding from the clarinetist, the dedicated involvement of a highly qualified sound technician, and the use of a spacious, technologically equipped performance venue. This performance guide aims to facilitate greater accessibility and understanding of this challenging work, in order to encourage widespread performance of this extraordinary piece.

Application of infrared waveguides and high-temperature storage unitesNaji, Majid 12 April 2018 (has links)

Modélisation électromagnétique des structures complexes par couplage des méthodes / Electromagnetic analysis of complex waveguide discontinuities using hybrid methodsYahia, Mohamed 09 November 2010 (has links)
Hybridization of numerical methods is one inventive way in the research of the rapidity, the efficiency and the precision of the electromagnetic modeling of complex structures joining straight and large elements with complex and small ones. Instead of a global and unique formulation, we hybridize many numerical methods which are the modal methods, the finite element methods and the artificial neural networks. A novel computer- ided design (CAD) tool of complex passive microwave devices in rectangular waveguide technology is suggested. The multimodal variational method is applied to the full-wave description in the rectangular waveguides while the finite element analysis characterizes waves in the arbitrarily shaped discontinuities. The suggested hybrid approach is successfully applied to the full-wave analysis of complex discontinuities with great practical interest, thus improving CPU time and memory storage against several full-wave finite element method (FEM) based CAD tools. The proposed hybrid CAD tool is successfully extended to the design of filters with cascaded complex discontinuities. The hybridization of modal methods and the artificial neural networks improved the CPU time in the analysis of simple waveguide discontinuities which enhanced the optimization of rectangular ridged waveguide filters.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is the promising versatile platform proposed for guiding electromagnetic waves at nanoscale dimensions. In this context dynamic control of SPPs prop- agation is of paramount importance. Thermo-optical (TO) effect is considered as an efficient technique for performing active control of plasmonic devices. Among the thermo-optical based plasmonic devices demonstrated so far TO coefficient is dominantly provided by a dielectric material on top of the metal sustaining the SPP mode, however, the role of TO properties of the metal has been rarely investigated for plasmonic applications especially at the telecom frequency ranges. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to investigate in detail the impact of thermo-optical properties of metals onto various SPP modes at telecom wavelengths.First, we report on photo-thermal modulation of thin film SPP mode traveling at gold/air interface excited at telecom wavelengths. We start by investigating the photo-thermally in- duced modulation of SPPs propagation mediated by the temperature dependent ohmic losses in the gold film. Then we extract the thermo-plasmonic coefficient of the SPP mode from the accurately measured SPPs signal depth of modulation by which we could compute the thermo-optical coefficients (TOCs) of gold at telecom wavelength. Lastly, we demonstrate a pulsed photo-thermal excitation of the SPPs in the nanosecond regime.Secondly, we investigate the thermo-optical dynamics of polymer loaded surface plasmon waveguide (PLSPPW) based devices photo-thermally excited in the nanosecond regime. First, we demonstrate thermo-absorption of PLSPPW modes mediated by the temperature-dependent ohmic losses of the metal and the thermally controlled field distribution of the plasmon mode within the metal. Next, we consider the thermo-optical response of a PLSPPW based racetrack shaped resonator coupled to a straight bus waveguide and evaluate the photo-thermal activation through heating and cooling times. We conclude that nanosecond excitation combined to high thermal diffusivity materials opens the way to high speed thermo-optical plasmonic devices. Finally, we report on the photo-thermal modulation of SPPs propagation along litho- graphically fabricated gold nanowires sustaining highly confined plasmonic mode at telecom wavelengths. First, we investigate telecommunication characterization of the nanowires by ap- plying high bit rate signal transmission, 10 Gbit/s, through fiber-to-fiber confocal detection setup. Next, we demonstrate and evaluate the photo-thermal modulation of SPPs propagation along the nanowires where we discuss qualitatively TO effects due to light-induced modula- tions on nanowires and show the impact of the incident beam polarization on the photo-thermal modulation.

In 'n tydvak
ervaar verskeie probleme soos stres, 'n verswakte selfbeeld, depressie
psigologiese implikasies mag inhou.
This study deals with the problems experienced by a person and his/her
family when faced with changing work circumstances. In a time where
the world of work is undergoing dramatic changes, many people lack
knowledge about the implications of the changing world of work. This
changing world of work requires that the worker will take greater
responsibility for his own career future and career security. A career
where fixed work hours, a fixed salary, a pension fund and other
benefits are a given, is no longer the norm in the changing world of
work.
People are not prepared to deal with changing work circumstances.
They experience a variety of problems like stress, a poor self image and
depression. Most people who are facing changing work circumstances
experience future shock and long for the old times when things were certain and predictable.
Persons and their families who are facing changing work circumstances
are not sufficiently prepared for the changes. They often try to escape
the pain and anxiety which accompany the changes by making quick
decisions and by taking premature actions. This often leads to failure
and has serious economic and psychological implications.
The counselling programme for this study is thus designed with the
purpose to give the families who are faced with changing work
circumstances the necessary insight in the changing world of work, and
to equip them with the necessary skills to deal with the problems which
accompany the changes. The persons and their families are also
empowered by introducing them to the concept "portfolio work". The
implications of portfolio work is that people always have some
marketable skills, and by marketing themselves and their skills they
should technically never be unemployed. It is attempted to help the
participants to internalise these concepts in order to make a paradigm
shift so that they will be more self reliant and less dependent on employers in the world of work.
From feedback with participants in the investigation at the beginning of
the group sessions, and the questionnaires they completed, it seems
that they have benefited from attending the group sessions. / Psychology of Education / Ph. D. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

The design of an undergraduate chiropractic curriculumKleynhans, Andries Mentz 11 1900 (has links)
Evidence is provided to support Kierkegaard's phenomenology that only what is learned
through experience is truly known. It is demonstrated that the chiropractic curriculum
represents a unique area of investigation and that it is possible to define curriculum; to create
a functional and integrative model which subsumes elements from the traditional, cyclical
and process models; and to design an integrative, problem-based, evidence-based,
experiential chiropractic curriculum. A taxonomy is proposed for curriculum design in four
domains which deal respectively with a) curriculum processes which include the selection,
motivation and interaction of curriculum developers, curriculum definitions and models, and
an algorithm for curriculum design; b) curriculum organisation which addresses
philosophical, sociological, cultural and psychological foundations, curriculum paradigms
and a chiropractic conceptual framework; c) curriculum development which concerns design
strategies, situational analysis, intent, content, design and organisation of learning
experiences and assessment of student performance; and d) curriculum application, which
includes the learning climate, quality management, management of change, self-evaluation
and external accreditation / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed. (Didactics)

Exploring the asset-based approach with a learner affected by disability and HIV and AIDSRyan, Heather 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the asset-based
approach through life skills facilitation with a learner with disability and
affected by HIV and AIDS. The conceptual framework of the study was the
HIV and AIDS pandemic, disability and the asset-based approach. I followed
a qualitative research approach guided by a transformative paradigm and I
used the action research design. I purposefully selected the case (a learner
with disability and affected HIV and AIDS) and other participants (mother and
community organisations) were identified in consultation with the learner and
as the research process developed. Data collection consisted of semistructured
interviews, observation, journals, capacity inventory and collage.
Data were transcribed verbatim and open-coding were used to identify
themes that emerged.
Findings that emerged were viz. mobilisation of existing assets enhances and
mobilises new assets; presence of positive emotions, agency and ownership
were reported. These assets led to incidences of school and community
engagement, with the participant as an asset in building, creating and
strengthening other people, resources and systems. Previous feelings of
dependency, powerlessness and hopelessness were replaced with increased
confidence, empowerment and competence.
I propose the incorporation of the asset-based approach within the life
orientation curriculum and the construct asset-awareness as a more userfriendly
term for use in the school context. Asset-awareness refers to the
raising and advancement of knowledge about abilities, gifts and assets and
the use or application thereof in practice.
