My thesis should combine all three specializations of my study, art education, civics and pedagogic. The objective of my work is creating an author{\crq}s book of Bible stories for children. The main idea is to approach Bible to atheists, or more precisely to unbelieving children. I entitled the theoretic part of the thesis Bible {--} What For? I explain there, why also an atheist should know Bible. I examine Bible from various points of view. I search the importance of Bible for different groups of people (believing, not believing, children, artists...), I think out the relation Bible {--} art, I write also about Bible in education. One chapter is about some sayings, names and other things, which come from Bible and we use them in common language. Also my personal experience with Bible has its place in my thesis. In the last chapter I describe the procedure of work on the practical part. In the practical part of the thesis I targeted the Old Testament. I retelled some stories from the Old Testament, so as they are suitable for children. Those stories I accompanied with a collection of ilustrations. They are made by lino {--} cutting. The collection contains 19 whole-page pictures, 5 half-page pictures, 3 little pictures and the book-jacket). I put my texts and ilustrations together to a book. The final design of the book is also a part of my thesis. I entitled this book of stories First Step to Bible.

Partindo do pressuposto de que o artista não é apenas um artesão especializado, mas comprometido com os novos desafios que a sociedade contemporânea apresenta, este texto objetiva apreciar alguns conteúdos que permitam o diálogo próximo entre pintura e poesia, ilustração e diferentes gêneros de obras literárias clássicas, reforçando a idéia de que as artes plásticas e as artes gráficas, interagindo com o texto literário, é um exercício para a leitura do mundo de maneira significativa e ao mesmo tempo lúdica. / This research involves the analysis of the literary’s aspects of artistic production of the Irish artist and craftsman of the early twentieth century, Harry Clarke, and his ability to deal with different media to interpret plastically literary works; initially with the stained glass and then with the illustration of books, without abandoning the first work. Based on the principle that the artist is not only an expert craftsman, as well as commited to the new challenges that contemporary society presents, this text aims to assess some contents that permit a close dialogue between painting and poetry, illustration and different genres of literary classics, reinforcing the idea that the fine arts and graphic arts, interacting with the literary text is an exercise in order to read the world in a meaningful way and at the same time in a playful way.

[pt] O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a ilustração enquanto elemento fundamental na construção de sentido de livros infantis. É feito um breve levantamento do percurso histórico da ilustração em livros desde a Idade Média e são examinadas as etapas da criação de imagens a partir de depoimentos e entrevistas com ilustradores contemporâneos, cujas obras representam uma linguagem visual específica em seus livros. Em seguida, as fases do processo da criação ilustrativa são descritas a fim de mostrar que a produção de imagens não é meramente uma ação intuitiva em relação ao texto verbal. Fruto de um projeto de design, trata-se de um processo estudado, concebido e referenciado na experiência do autor, bem como nos componentes da obra. Desta forma, a pesquisa estuda a relação verbo-visual e sua importância na criação das obras literárias infantis, considerando o gênero de ilustrações narrativas. A relação entre estes dois códigos de linguagem é discutida a partir da perspectiva de diferentes autores e ilustradores, identificando as possibilidades oferecidas pelo Design Gráfico na interação entre tipografia e ilustração. / [en] This work s goal is to study illustration as a fundamental element in the children s book meaning making. A brief historical account of book illustration from Middle Ages is presented. Contemporary illustrators are interviewed to describe their creative process. This process is brought foreword in order to show that image creating is not just based on intuition vis-à-vis the verbal text. As the result of a project of graphic design, such process is conceived and based on the author s experience, as well as the elements found in references around the written text. The present work, therefore, examines the verbal and visual relationship, and its importance in the creation of children s literary works concerning narrative illustration. The connection between these two codes, is then, discussed bearing in mind different perspectives presented by authors and illustrators.

Grafická výzdoba tisků vydaných Pavlem Severínem z Kapí Hory dosáhla vysoké úrovně, srovnatelné se zahraničními ilustracemi. Na tradici a význam kvalitní grafické výzdoby tisků pak navázali jeho následovníci, Jan Severín mladší a Jan Kosořský z Kosoře, jejichž tiskařské produkci zde bude také věnováno nemalé místo. [pt] A pesquisa trata da inserção do ilustrador no mercado editorial de maneira alternativa ao sistema hegemônico de produção. Tem como objeto de estudo a ilustração ficcional literária e visa a produção de livros de imagem em escala local, de maneira sustentável, como resistência à indústria massificada, dando, assim, autonomia a autores fora do eixo hegemônico. É uma aplicação prática do conceito de sustentabilidade comunicacional, na observação da produção de conteúdo, tendo a cultura popular como recorte e a manifestação Bate-Bola como estudo de caso. / [en] The research deals with the insertion of the illustrator in the publishing market as an alternative to the hegemonic production system. Its object of study is fictional literary illustration and aims to produce picture books on a local scale, in a sustainable way, as a resistance to mass industry, thus giving autonomy to authors outside the hegemonic axis. It is a practical application of the concept of communicational sustainability, in the observation of content production, having popular culture as a cutout and the Bate-Bola demonstration as a case study.

[pt] Esta pesquisa discute a ilustração em livro-ilustrado infantil contemporâneo, a vê como uma interseção entre Design-Artes-Literatura e realça sua importância na formação do leitor de imagens não alfabetizado visualmente. Esta ilustração é um espaço fundamental para o Design, através do ficcional, cria pontes entre ficção literária e o cidadão, inserido no contexto urbano. Traça paralelos entre a história gráfica do livro em solo fértil literário brasileiro, de origem multicultural e os momentos de construção identitária ocidental e brasileira, culminando na riqueza textual desses livros. Indo além, defendem-se dois pontos: que a ilustração no livro infantil contemporâneo contribui para o ensino de artes na escola, a partir do estímulo à leitura das imagens simbólicas que traz em si; e que a influência modernista e sua releitura brasileira promoveram uma identidade cultural brasileira de caráter expressivo, caricatural e estilístico. Sugere-se uma metodologia de estrelas (ISER, 1997) que estimula a construção de constelações pessoais a partir da leitura visual. A leitura de sete livros-ilustrados infantis premiados pelo Prêmio Jabuti encontra-se detalhada nesta tese, assim como o diálogo com mediadores de leitura. Defende-se que a aplicação de um olhar estético, assumindo rupturas e questionamentos presentes em tais ilustrações, ajuda-nos a configurar um conceito abrangente de Design e sociedade, em constantes atualizações e construções. / [en] Illustration in children s picture books represents a very important space for Design, for, by means of fiction, it can reinforce or challenge our beliefs, and can also stimulate new fantasies, which are needed to suspend our illusory and instantaneous reality. As a consequence, illustration bridges the gap between the literary fiction and the urban environment, building new ways for us to exist as citizens. In the present study, illustration in children s picture books was understood as an intersection among Design-Arts-Literature, and its importance in the formation of visually illiterate image readers was investigated. A parallel was drawn between the graphic history of the book and some milestones in the creation of the Western and Brazilian identities, culminating with the textual richness of Brazilian children s picture books.. It is possible that the modernist influence and its interpretation in Brazil promoted an expressive, caricatural and stylistic Brazilian cultural identity. With this aim, a methodology that allows the construction of personal constellations based on visual reading – stars methodology (ISER, 1997) – was suggested. Then, mediators and readers were consulted in order to improve the organicity and nonlinearity of this methodology. Finally, seven Jabuti Prize winning children s picture books were analyzed. The author believes that an aesthetical look that takes into account ruptures and questionings present in the illustrations may help us broaden the understanding of both Design and society, which are constantly being updated and built.

[pt] O presente trabalho se propõe compreender o papel político exercido pela Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro por meio da sua atuação no contexto da instalação da Corte portuguesa na América, buscando chamar a atenção para a relação intrínseca entre cultura e poder nos projetos imperiais portugueses. Abordada como agente histórico, a Impressão Régia se apresenta como a face cultural do projeto político de criação de um novo império português na América, longamente acalentado por letrados e estadistas ilustrados portugueses e posto em prática com a transferência da Corte para o Rio de Janeiro. Frente às tensões políticas que a nova situação criada pela mudança da sede do Império gerava, a Impressão Régia desempenhou o importante papel de legitimação e sustentação desse projeto político, pelo menos até o fim efetivo da censura prévia da imprensa no Reino do Brasil em 28 de agosto de 1821. Por meio da continuação do trabalho de difusão das Luzes no Império português, e da construção da metamemória do reinado de D. João na América, a Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro busca estabelecer uma relação de continuidade entre o passado, o presente e o futuro da monarquia portuguesa, passando por cima dos momentos de ruptura apenas vivenciados. / [en] This study aims to realize the political role exercised by the Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro through its performance in the context of the installation of the Portuguese Court in America, seeking to highlight to the intrinsic relationship between culture and power on the Portuguese imperial projects. Adressed as an historical agent, the Impressão Régia presents itself as the cultural aspect of the political project of a new Portuguese empire creation in America, a long cherished by illustrated Portuguese scholars and statemen and implemented by the Court transfer to Rio de Janeiro. In the face of the political tensions that was generated by the new situation created by the Empire seat moving, the Impressão Régia has played an important role in legitimizing and sustaining of this political project, at least until the effective end of previous censorship in Kingdon of Brazil press on August 28, 1821. Through the continuation of work of dissemination of the Lights in the Portuguese empire, and the building of the reign metamemory of D. João in America, the Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro aims to stablish a continuity relationship between past, present and future of the Portuguese monarchy, passing over the rupture moments just experienced.

[pt] Esta pesquisa pretende investigar, compreender e descrever as percepções atuais dos leitores adultos sobre a participação da ilustração em livros de ficção em prosa dirigidos ao público adulto e a oferta do mercado. Partindo do pressuposto de que questões relativas à valoração e hierarquização entre conteúdo verbal/conteúdo visual sustentam o paradigma de ausência de ilustrações no livro de ficção em prosa dirigido ao público adulto em decorrência das pressões e expectativas culturais sofridas pelos leitores, o presente trabalho abrange em seu percurso metodológico: uma retrospectiva sobre a história do livro ilustrado no ocidente, com base nos estudos de Fischer (2006), Powers (2011) e Chartier (1998); uma discussão sobre as pressões sociais que agem sobre o leitor adulto reunindo conceitos presentes nas obras de Rancière (2009), Bourdieu (1998) e Nikilajeva e Scott (2011); uma pesquisa quantitativa em livraria sobre a incidência de ilustrações na oferta atual do mercado editorial, baseada na metodologia proposta por Gil (2002) – na qual é constatada a majoritária ausência de ilustrações no miolo dos livros de ficção em prosa dirigidos ao público adulto – e um questionário com mais de 400 leitores adultos, seguindo os preceitos de Bardin (2002), no qual se constata uma possível demanda de mercado para obras ilustradas para adultos, assim como uma grande aceitação dos respondentes do leitor adulto de obras ilustradas, embora sejam efetivamente encontrados traços de valoração negativa e hierarquização. Por fim, é proposta uma discussão sobre o papel do designer, enquanto pessoa influenciada e agente de influências, seguindo a linha de pensamento de Farbiarz (2008) e Findeli (1994), e o livro e a sua fruição como um wicked problem, com base nas ideias de Cardoso (2012), Rittel e Webber (1973). / [en] This dissertation s research aims to investigate, comprehend and describe adult readers current perceptions about the participation of illustration in fiction prose books aimed at a adult audience and the market s supply. Based on the assumption that issues related to attribution of values and hierarchization between the written content and the image content maintain the current paradigm of absence of illustration in fiction prose books aimed at adult audiences, this dissertation s methodology covers: a retrospective of the history of illustrated books based on the studies of Fischer (2006), Powers (2011) and Chartier (1998); a discussion about the social pressures that act upon the adult reader gathering concepts of the works of Rancière (2009), Bourdieu (1998) and Nikilajeva and Scott (2011); a quantitative research done in a book store about the incidence of illustrations in the current market supply, based on Gil (2002) – in which is found that the majority of fiction prose books aimed at adults do not have illustrations – and a questionnaire with more than 400 adult readers, based on the Bardin s methodology (2002), in with is found that there is a possible demand or niche for adult illustrated fiction books, as well great social acceptance of the adults who like illustrated books, thought there races of attribution of values and hierarchization were found. Ultimately, it proposes a discussion about the designer s role, as an influenced person and as an influence himself, based on the thoughts of Farbiarz (2008) and Findeli (1994), and about the book and its fruition as a wicked problem, based in the ideas of Cardoso (2012), Rittel and Webber (1973).

[pt] Esta Tese apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada pela triangulação de um método quantitativo e outro qualitativo que teve por objetivo detectar como a incorporação de animações interfere na compreensão de histórias por crianças. Desde o advento do livro infantil, este passou por inúmeras transformações conceituais e técnicas e evoluiu de gravuras e desenhos de linha a uma ampla gama de estilos. Hoje, livros infantis exibem milhões de cores e texturas diversas elaboradas com técnicas e recursos muito variados. No final do século XX, as mídias digitais interativas já configuravam um novo suporte para narrativas literárias. Acredita-se que possam promover um novo tipo de relacionamento entre o sujeito que as lê e as histórias que para ele se desvendam na medida em que interage com os conteúdos apresentados. No meio digital, as ilustrações, sempre presentes em contos infantis, ganham novos contornos: poderão contar com a animação. Com os livros eletrônicos digitais – e-readers – que hoje são realidade, as crianças passam a ter a possibilidade de explorar narrativas onde as imagens poderão ganhar movimento. Os resultados podem colaborar, com designers, escritores, ilustradores, pedagogos e docentes principalmente no esforço de estimular o prazer de ler no período que segue ao da alfabetização. / [en] This Thesis presents the results of a research made by the triangulation of a qualitative and a quantitative method design try to find out how children may understand narrative content when stories are presented in different forms: as a traditional hard copy book and as an animated e-book in a digital platform such as an e-reader. Since the very first storybook for children, the illustrations that have always been included in such books have gone through many conceptual and technical changes and has evolved from simple line drawings do a wide range of styles. Today we see story books showing colors and textures created through various techniques and resources. Interactive digital media offer a new supporting structure for literary narrative and may provide the means to create a new kind of relationship involving the subject who reads and the unfolding stories as he interacts with the narrative content. In this media, illustration, which has always made part children of story books, acquires a new form, for there is a possibility to explore sensorial resources beyond those enhanced by verbal text and printed illustration and, thus, creates a new way to practice and develop the act of reading. The collected data and the research results can be used by designers, writers, illustrators, pedagogy professionals and school teachers as aiding tools in the effort to stimulate the pleasure of reading by small children after they have learned the alphabet and during the time they struggle to became fully literate. / [es] Esta Tesis presenta los resultados de uma investigación realizada por triangulación de um método quantitativo y otro qualitativo que tuvo por objetivo detectar como la incorporación de animaciones interfiere em la compreensión de historias por niños. Desde que existe el libro infantil, ya pasó por inúmeras transformaciones conceptuales y técnicas y evolucionó de dibujos simples a uma ampla gama de estilos. Hoy, libros infantiles exhiben millones de colores y diversas texturas elaboradas con técnicas y recursos muy variados. Al final del siglo XX, los medios digitales interactivos ya configurabam un nuevo soporte para narrativas literárias. Se cree que este tipo de narrativa pueda promover nuevas formas de relacionamento entre el sujeito que las lee y las historias que se Le desvendam em la medida en que interacciona con los contenidos presentados. Em el medio digital, las ilustraciones, siempre presentes en cuentos infantiles, adquieren nuevos contornos: podrán contar com la animación. Con los libros eletrónicos digitales – e-readers – que soy hoy realidade, los ninõs pasaron a tener la posibilidad de explorar narrativas donde las imágenes podrán moverse. Los resultados pueden colaborar, com diseñadores, escritores, ilustradores, pedagogos y docentes, principalmente em lo que significa el esfuerzo de estimular el gusto por la lectura, el placer de leer, en los años posteriores al período de alfabetización.
