Vaz, Ana Carolina Rocha 19 March 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T14:23:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Carolina Rocha Vaz.pdf: 691245 bytes, checksum: 0fd6901a116520cf58e82d6d007d39d3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-19 / The aim of this project is to identify and analyze the impacts of mobile telephone use in society. It was observed that use of this device can strengthen relationships through the exchange of information between users by means of photos, videos, text messages and phone calls. The mobile phone has proven to be a key element in ubiquitous computing and what differentiates it from other mobile devices is the fact that it can combine a number of features in one super-portable piece of equipment. Mobile phones are an efficient tool for coordinating activities. The possibility of rescheduling commitments in real-time, during breaks between one activity and another, can transform the experience of time according to researchers. The addition of localization systems to this device allowed new methods of appropriating physical space, especially in urban centers. The consequences of being available any time, any place, were also discussed. There are two movements going in opposite direction: although we have our entire social network available, at the same time, we become more vulnerable to those who wish to find us. This study is the result of reading the work of authors who analyzed the social changes occurring due to the advances in the development of smart technologies such as Pierre Levy and Manuel Castells. The issue of the impact caused by the use of mobile phones was discussed based on the research by Lucia Santaella, André Lemos, Adriana Souza e Silva, Richard Ling and Howard Rheingold / Este trabalho tem por objetivo apontar e analisar os impactos do uso do telefone celular na vida em sociedade.

As possíveis configurações do livro nos suportes digitais / The possibilities of the book’s configurations in digital format

Sehn, Thaís Cristina Martino January 2014 (has links)
This research has as its purpose to map out the artifacts so-called ‘digital books’ nowadays. They were characterized from a crossing between printed books main specificities and those related to digital environment very own resources. The research methodology applied to it was of two kinds: literature review and an observational study of the object of study. A historical overview was unearthed in order to achieve the intended purpose, identifying the characteristics linked to the notion of ‘book’, taking into account changes that have taken place stemming from its materiality. Given this perception it was possible to understand the remediation of the print book proposed in e-books, the ones accessed through e-readers and tablets mainly. Identification and registration of the latest developments in digital books resources were another point covered in this work. From a literature review standpoint, interactivity, multimedia and hypertext potentialities were crossexamined. Moreover, there had been discussed some of the alternatives to offer readers proximity and different ways to interact with the work content through the use of cited resources. Still, before realizing the artifact analysis, a more in-depth study of e-book materiality was needed. That is, to perceive how hardware, content and software interact among themselves restricting the possibilities that might be made available to the reader. The singularities of the following macro categories: Identification, Access, Functionalities, Potentialities of the digital environment and the approach of the printed book concept (remediation) to graphic project were evaluated in the table analysis. After an empirical and theoretical study, it was realized that book is an artifact with flexible properties, thus, a definition was set forth based upon a series of principles that together characterize this type of publication, regardless of being in printed or digital form. Therefore, we came to the conclusion the e-book is a digital content with the same features of a printed book and the former can exploit digital media resources such as sound, video, animation and interactivity besides virtually text and image. We were also able to identify through the artifacts primary features that were under analysis the following types of digital books: customized, PDF, digitized, multimedia and interactive.

The use of handheld mobile devices : an exploratory study of English Language student educators

Lediga, Mamaroba Sylvia January 2018 (has links)
Thesis ((M. A. (English Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / This study explores the use of handheld mobile devices in the learning and teaching of English language. The problem is that students have to stand in long queues at computer laboratories because the space is limited and they have to take turns in using the computers. Second level English student educators participated in the study; they responded to a questionnaire and sat for test on the use of mobile handheld devices. The study is underpinned by the integration of the Activity Theory and Social Constructivism. The solution is that mobile handheld devices can be used to provide access to learning material and just-in-time information outside and inside the formal class time and space because findings of the study show that almost all second level student educators at the University of Limpopo possess and use handheld mobile devices.

Conception, développement et évaluation de techniques d'interactions fluides pour des environnements multidimensionnels : application aux logiciels du service public / Conception, development and evaluation of fluid interaction techniques for multidimensional environments : application on public services' software

Perelman, Gary 02 October 2018 (has links)
[...] / The work of this thesis is part of a collaboration with the company Berger-Levrault, a major actor in the development of administrative management software for public services. This work is based on two observations. On the first hand, the policy of digitization of public services induces the need for software adapted to the professions of all public institutions. These software are complex and particularly rich compared to classically used office software (Office, mailbox, etc.). On the other hand, we observe that the devices used to interact with these software did not evolve. Since several decades, the mouse and the keyboard remain the norm in a fixed environment. However, these devices have only few input degrees of freedom. The manipulation of multidimensional data with these devices induces a greater number of steps to perform a task, thus lengthening the interaction path. In this context, the objective of these thesis work is to improve the interaction flow with multidimensional data contained in the software of the public service through the increase of the input degrees of freedom proposed by the devices. Indeed, a larger amount of input degrees of freedom would reduce the number of steps necessary to the accomplishment of a given task, thus improving the interaction flow. We propose three major contributions: a device with multiple degrees of freedom, the Roly-Poly Mouse; a design space, DECO; as well as a set of interaction techniques with mobile devices based on the principle of stacking. A first contribution of our work is the design of a new device with multiple degrees of freedom: the Roly-Poly Mouse (RPM). This device, whose base is rounded, aims to replace the traditional mouse. It has 6 degrees of freedom (3 translations of which 2 exploited and 3 rotations). We evaluated its performance and compared it to other devices for a task requiring 6 degrees of freedom (3D object manipulation). A second contribution of our work is the definition of a design space focusing on the physical aspect of the composition of devices: DECO. DECO relies on two axes: physical arrangement and physical manipulation. From this design space, we designed a compound device: the Roly-Poly Mouse 2, a device consisting of the combination of a Roly-Poly Mouse and a traditional mouse. We evaluated its performance and compared it to other devices through a RST task (Rotate-Scale-Translate, 5D task). [...]

Modeling Context-Adaptive Energy-Aware Security in Mobile Devices

Singh, Preeti 01 January 2019 (has links)
As increasing functionality in mobile devices leads to rapid battery drain, energy management has gained increasing importance. However, differences in user’s usage contexts and patterns can be leveraged for saving energy. On the other hand, the increasing sensitivity of users’ data, coupled with the need to ensure security in an energy-aware manner, demands careful analyses of trade-offs between energy and security. The research described in this thesis addresses this challenge by 1)modeling the problem of context-adaptive energy-aware security as a combinatorial optimization problem (Context-Sec); 2) proving that the decision version of this problem is NP-Complete, via a reduction from a variant of the well-known Knapsack problem; 3) developing three different algorithms to solve a related offline version of Context-Sec; and 4) implementing tests and compares the performance of the above three algorithms with data-sets derived from real-world smart-phones on wireless networks. The first algorithm presented is a pseudo-polynomial dynamic programming (DP)algorithm that computes an allocation with optimal user benefit using recurrence of the relations; the second algorithm is a greedy heuristic for allocation of security levels based on user benefit per unit of power consumption for each level; and the third algorithm is a Fully Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (FPTAS) which has a polynomial time execution complexity as opposed to the pseudo-polynomialDP based approach. To the best of the researcher’s knowledge, this is the first work focused on modeling, design, implementation and experimental performance.

Building Usability into Health Informatics : Development and Evaluation of Information Systems for Shared Homecare

Scandurra, Isabella January 2007 (has links)
How can we develop usable and work process-oriented ICT systems for shared homecare? Shared homecare involves different professionals, consists of mobile work and requires immediate and ubiquitous access to patient-oriented information, supporting an integrated view on the care process. This thesis presents a new collaborative design method for user needs analysis and requirements specification in the context of health information systems development; the Multi-disciplinary Thematic Seminar (MdTS) method. The thesis also describes the MdTS method’s application and two different usability evaluations of the developed system. The MdTS addresses a significant problem with health information technologies; they tend to support collaborative work of healthcare professionals poorly, sometimes leading to a fragmentation of workflow and disruption of healthcare processes. Based on human-computer interaction methods, MdTS implies a multiple-user needs analysis by thorough investigation of the entire interdisciplinary cooperative work and its transformation into technical specifications in order to develop appropriate information and communication technology (ICT) for the users’ differing work situations. Application of the MdTS resulted in a prototype, the OLD@HOME Virtual Health Record (VHR), adapted to the specific demands in shared homecare. Through mobile devices each care professional accessed patient information in profession-specific views from an integrated platform. This thesis provides an interesting case, illustrating how mobile ICT can support shared homecare, thereby bridging health and social care activities and improving knowledge about joint work processes. Results from the usability evaluations were overall positive. Information needed at point of care was available on mobile devices and presented in an understandable manner. However, the evaluations also indicated that it is difficult to transfer results from one homecare setting to another due to differences in operational routines. In conclusion, application of the MdTS method, in this study, succeeded in elicitation of correct user needs and in transferring correct requirements specifications to system developers for implementation.

Proxy Module for System on Mobile Devices (SyD) Middleware

Gunawan, Joseph 20 November 2008 (has links)
Nowadays, users of mobile devices are growing. The users expect that they could communicate constantly using their mobile devices while they are also constantly moving. Therefore, there is a need to provide disconnection tolerance of transactions in the mobile devices’ platforms and its synchronization management. System on Mobile Devices (SyD) is taken as one of the examples of mobile devices’ platforms. The thesis studies the existing SyD architecture, from its framework into its kernel, and introduces the proxy module enhancement in SyD to handle disconnection tolerance, including its synchronization. SyD kernel has been extended for the purpose of enabling proxy module. SyDSync has been constructed for synchronization with the proxy. The timeout has been studied for seamless proxy invocation. A Camera application that tries to catch a stolen vehicle has been simulated for the practical purpose of using the proxy module extension.

On Target Marketing in Mobile Devices : MBA-thesis in marketing

Wessén, Fredrik, Forsberg, Mats January 2010 (has links)
In the best of worlds, all marketing is relevant. This study brings light to and creates understanding for how to capture the opportunities for target marketing, given by resent technical development and improvement. Customers often perceive marketing on the internet as annoying, embarrassing, repetitive and sometimes even noisy. Companies have problems to focus their marketing efforts towards the areas which give most value for the marketing investments. The conflict between companies pushing the marketing messages to their customers, who are trying to avoid them, a growing mistrust is feed. Well established businesses are challenged by new companies cutting in between the content providers and their customers. A new business model using the Long Tail phenomena is shaking the old media houses’ business position. Smartphones and netbooks are merging into mobile devices, which release a number of opportunities for target marketing. This study states that mobile devices are personalized and as a consequence, open for the possibility of target marketing towards individuals. However, there are identified obstacles to overcome. One challenge lies in the balance between marketing benefits and preventing violation of the customers’ personal integrity. From literature and case studies, light is brought to the state of practice of rules and regulations, old media houses Schibsted and Aftonbladet, search engine provider as Google and a marketing agency, Mobiento Mobile Marketing.  Trends and best practices stick out as more important in order for a company to become a successful target marketing actor. A “target marketing house concept” points out four significant areas for companies to benefit from the power of target marketing in mobile devices. Trough out of this study, protection of the personal integrity and personal data has been pointed out as a key factor for a mutual and trustful customer relationship. This is considered to be as a precondition, both for behaviour segmentation and for a joint rewarding customer dialogue.
