Responsive Web Design and Optimizing Loading Times on Mobile Devices for Enhanced Web Presence

Modé, Erik January 2014 (has links)
Surfing the web has moved from the stationary computers to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. As the technology moves further and more devices comes out on the market this is a trend that will continue. This makes it more important for web developers to adapt and make their websites fit not only for one device. The website needs to fit all devices. Since many of these devices are using wireless connections, the website performance has also become even more important in order to give the users a good experience.   Responsive web design is an approach for designing and developing web pages. By using the three techniques of flexible grid layout, flexible images and media, and media queries, websites can get a design that fits all devices. Responsive web techniques will also make the web page perform better on each device since it makes the web page adapt to its environment. There are several performance techniques that can be applied to a website in order to increase performance and loading time. Responsive web design including performance techniques can together make a great impact on a website's loading speed and user experience.   This thesis embraces this approach for web development. By developing a design theory, a website emerges where these approaches of web development have been implemented. During the development of the website the experiences implementing this approach and techniques is discussed. The website developed for this thesis was able to finish loading below 4 seconds on a mobile device using a 3G connection. We argue that responsive web design and performance techniques can help a website immensely to increase its user experience and performance.

The Effect of Mobile Technology as an Active Student Response System on the Acquisition of U.S. History Content of Secondary Students with Specific Learning Disabilities

Monem, Ruba 16 March 2015 (has links)
Students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) typically learn less history content than their peers without disabilities and show fewer learning gains. Even when they are provided with the same instructional strategies, many students with SLD struggle to grasp complex historical concepts and content area vocabulary. Many strategies involving technology have been used in the past to enhance learning for students with SLD in history classrooms. However, very few studies have explored the effectiveness of emerging mobile technology in K-12 history classrooms. This study investigated the effects of mobile devices (iPads) as an active student response (ASR) system on the acquisition of U.S. history content of middle school students with SLD. An alternating treatments single subject design was used to compare the effects of two interventions. There were two conditions and a series of pretest probesin this study. The conditions were: (a) direct instruction and studying from handwritten notes using the interactive notebook strategy and (b) direct instruction and studying using the Quizlet App on the iPad. There were three dependent variables in this study: (a) percent correct on tests, (b) rate of correct responses per minute, and (c) rate of errors per minute. A comparative analysis suggested that both interventions (studying from interactive notes and studying using Quizlet on the iPad) had varying degrees of effectiveness in increasing the learning gains of students with SLD. In most cases, both interventions were equally effective. During both interventions, all of the participants increased their percentage correct and increased their rate of correct responses. Most of the participants decreased their rate of errors. The results of this study suggest that teachers of students with SLD should consider a post lesson review in the form of mobile devices as an ASR system or studying from handwritten notes paired with existing evidence-based practices to facilitate students’ knowledge in U.S. history. Future research should focus on the use of other interactive applications on various mobile operating platforms, on other social studies subjects, and should explore various testing formats such as oral question-answer and multiple choice.

A framework for the construction of mobile applications for users with motor disability due to stroke

Olibario José Machado Neto 11 May 2018 (has links)
Nowadays, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are equipped with hardware components that can be used to create solutions that support various activities of people with disabilities. For example, the sensors of a mobile phone in the hand of a user with motor disability can be used to identify movements of that users hand and, then, to move an electric wheelchair. Although the use of mobile devices for the creation of accessibility solutions is deeply explored and documented by many researchers, there still is a lack of infrastructures to facilitate the creation of solutions for users with disabilities by relying on the use of the computational resources of mobile devices. This work presents an Android-native framework that provides libraries for the use and integration of the various resources of these devices, such as sensors, microphone and camera, to assist users with motor disabilities. The framework was proposed based on requirements raised by health professionals who work at a Rehabilitation Center that belongs to the State Hospital of Ribeirão Preto (SP, Brazil), where they rehabilitate users with hemiparesis due to stroke. Applications using the proposed infrastructure have been implemented as proofs of concept that demonstrate the possibility of creating solutions that use and integrate the main components of mobile devices in order to assist the rehabilitated users. Although the scope of requirements of our project is limited to people who have had stroke, tests performed with software developers of different levels of experience have shown that the framework speeds up the implementation of diverse solutions, including the ones for people without disabilities. The framework, which can be adapted for different operating systems, has been implemented to help build applications for the Android operating system.

Análise de execução de aplicações paralelas em grades móveis com restrições de processamento e bateria / Analysis of the execution of parallel applications using a mobile grid environment

Frederico Cassis Ribeiro Santos 10 March 2016 (has links)
Nowadays, there are different proposals to integrate mobile devices in a computational grid, although several problems are introduces. This dissertation focus on the energy limitation problem when using mobile devices to provide resources, such as processing power to run parallel applications. It also proposes a method to estimate energy consumption for a task that needs to be executed in this environment. To achieve this goal two mobile devices were used as a test case and a representation of its energy consumption was created running benchmarks and using regression techniques. To validate the model created, two applications were executed and had the measured values compared to the estimated ones. The estimation showed a raise between 6 and 14.24 percent.

Oliveira Júnior, Arilson José de January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In animal production environments, the process of analysis of thermal comfort conditions may be carried out through the calculation of the thermal comfort index and the creation of maps showing spatial variabilities of meteorological parameters and the thermal comfort indexes. The current methods for analysis of animal well fare, especially those including maps of thermal comfort indexes, are carried out using computer programs with specific software of data interpolation. On the other hand, these processes don’t allow the evaluations of thermal comfort to be easily performed in the data collection site. Therefore, the aim of this study was developing a system for creation of maps with spatial variability of the air temperature and thermal comfort of animals, using the IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) interpolation method. The system created is formed by an Android app and devices of transmission and reception of meteorological data. The app was developed using the Java programming language, through the Android Studio integrated development environment. The mobile devices were made using low cost air temperature, black globe temperature and relative humidity sensors, and microcontrollers of open source electronic platform – Arduino. The algorithm developed for the Android app was validated by means of comparing the air temperature figures measured, and those interpolated by the app in a broiler shed. On the other hand, the transmission and reception of data were validated via ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor
