Playful writing i Sverige : Möjligheter och hinder ur verksamma pedagogers synvinkel / Playful writing in Sweden : Opportunities and obstacles from the working educator's point of view

Ingvarsdotter, Anna, Walter, Maria January 2018 (has links)
The method is developed in the UK and based on the UK curriculum. The method is based on pupils being able to approaching narrative writing by reading together and by guided play with building in groups using 3D material. The method is based on multimodal and cooperative learning. The aim with our study is to investigate how educators in Sweden perceive the method Playful writing opportunities and obstacles with regard to inclusion during narrative writing. To be able to find out how the educators perceive the method we need to find out how they perceive the different steps of the method. In the autumn of 2018, we have carried thorugh two workshop opportunities for educators to try and form an idea of the method. The workshops are based on our understanding of the handbook Playful writing. After the workshops the participating educators have been asked to participate in our web survey. The 46 participants of the study are generally positive towards the method. They believe that the method gives pupils the opportunity to increase goal achievement in narrative writing. The participants also believe that the method Playful writing has the opportunity to contribute to all pupils' participation in learning. The answers in the questionnaire suggest that the method has more possibilities than obstacles. From July 1, 2019, reading, writing, counting the guarantee applies to all Swedish schools (Government Offices, 2018). Personnel with special educational skills are expected to assess pupils' knowledge development at an early stage. The staff with special pedagogical competence shall also, together with the educators working in the classes, offer inclusive teaching methods. These methods offer a rich diversity in teaching that contributes to a well-functioning writing instruction. Based on the results in our study, we suggest that Playful writing can be such a method.

Multimodal storytelling : exploring the role of pedagogy in developing student literacy via school television.

Lockyer, Caroline January 2014 (has links)
This research study was designed to explore the effectiveness of pedagogical practices on student literacy learning within a student television context. The study was undertaken in response to practitioner inquiry into the value and worth of school television for student literacy learning. Over the research period this project evolved into a deeply reflective self-study of teaching practice within a technological environment. This research took place in a suburban primary school where school television had been created by students for the previous two years. Twenty-two students aged between 10 and 12 participated in three cycles of action research to investigate how pedagogy influences learning within this context. A range of pedagogical actions designed to influence students’ critical thinking were implemented into action research cycles. The selection of actions for intervention was influenced by an investigation into current literature from the field, and an analysis of existing multi-literacy learning, pedagogical conditions and student views of teaching and learning within student television at the beginning of the research cycles. This study gathered information during research cycles using student learning conversations and student interviews, which provided insight into learning from the point of view of students. Supporting this information were daily researcher observations and end-of-cycle interviews with classroom teachers. Through careful monitoring, analysis and reflection on each research cycle it was clear that strategic pedagogical interventions did positively influence multi-literacy learning. Rather than attempt to measure differences in student learning, this study explored how multi-literacy learning, strategic pedagogy and learning within student television inter-related with one another. This research study identified and explored the complex inter-relationships between pedagogies and multi-literacy learning.

Möjligheter och utmaningar: Fritidslärares vardag med digitala verktyg / Possibilities and challenges: Leisure-time teachers day to day work with digital tools

Hjerpe, Frida, Thorell, Moa January 2022 (has links)

News article segmentation using multimodal input : Using Mask R-CNN and sentence transformers / Artikelsegmentering med multimodala artificiella neuronnätverk : Med hjälp av Mask R-CNN och sentence transformers

Henning, Gustav January 2022 (has links)
In this century and the last, serious efforts have been made to digitize the content housed by libraries across the world. In order to open up these volumes to content-based information retrieval, independent elements such as headlines, body text, bylines, images and captions ideally need to be connected semantically as article-level units. To query on facets such as author, section, content type or other metadata, further processing of these documents is required. Even though humans have shown exceptional ability to segment different types of elements into related components, even in languages foreign to them, this task has proven difficult for computers. The challenge of semantic segmentation in newspapers lies in the diversity of the medium: Newspapers have vastly different layouts, covering diverse content, from news articles to ads to weather reports. State-of-the-art object detection and segmentation models have been trained to detect and segment real-world objects. It is not clear whether these architectures can perform equally well when applied to scanned images of printed text. In the domain of newspapers, in addition to the images themselves, we have access to textual information through Optical Character Recognition. The recent progress made in the field of instance segmentation of real-world objects using deep learning techniques begs the question: Can the same methodology be applied in the domain of newspaper articles? In this thesis we investigate one possible approach to encode the textual signal into the image in an attempt to improve performance. Based on newspapers from the National Library of Sweden, we investigate the predictive power of visual and textual features and their capacity to generalize across different typographic designs. Results show impressive mean Average Precision scores (>0:9) for test sets sampled from the same newspaper designs as the training data when using only the image modality.

Building a low-cost IoT sensor system that recognizes behavioral patterns for collaborative learning - A Proof of Concept

Sundblad, Graziella January 2021 (has links)
Since the advent of the Internet, we have been observing a fast-paced development within the computing world. One of the major innovations in recent years is the “Internet of Things”, which brings interconnectedness between devices and humans to unprecedented heights. This technological breakthrough enabled the emergence of a new sub-field within Learning Analytics, Multimodal Learning Analytics, which makes use of several types of data sources to study learning-related processes. As computers and sensors become increasingly cheaper and more accessible,  research within this new sub-field grows, yet some gaps remain unexplored. Additionally, there is a research bias toward computer-assisted learning environments, rather than physical ones. At the same time, the current labor market is highly competitive, and possessing profession-related skills is not sufficient to land a job. Besides these skills, there is an increasing demand for social skills, such as communication, teamwork, and collaboration. However, there is a gap between the skills that are trained in an academic setting and the ones that are required by the labor market. Having this background in mind, this work aims at designing and evaluating an IoT sensor system capable of tracking patterns observed under social interactions within a group, and more specifically, in terms of the distance between group members while solving a task. Another important aspect of this study is the system's cost-effectiveness so that it can be employed in a scalable and sustainable manner. To achieve this goal, a multimethodological approach for Design Science Research was adopted, which implied the combination of several methods such as sketching, prototyping, and testing. As a result, this study contributes both to the research area of Multimodal Learning Analytics, and to educational practices.

Multimodal Classification of Second-Hand E-Commerce Ads / Multimodal klassiciering av annonser på Second-Hand-Marknadsplatser

Åberg, Ludvig January 2018 (has links)
In second-hand e-commerce, categorization of new products is typically done by the seller. Automating this process makes it easier to upload ads and could lower the number of incorrectly categorized ads. Automatic ad categorization also makes it possible for a second-hand e-commerce platform to use a more detailed category system, which could make the shopping experience better for potential buyers. Product ad categorization is typically addressed as a text classification problem as most metadata associated with products are textual. By including image information, i.e. using a multimodal approach, better performance can however be expected. The work done in this thesis evaluates different multimodal deep learning models for the task of ad categorization on data from Blocket.se. We examine late fusion models, where the modalities are combined at decision level, and early fusion models, where the modalities are combined at feature level. We also introduce our own approach Text Based Visual Attention  (TBVA), which extends the image CNN Inception v3 with an attention mechanism to incorporate textual information. For all models evaluated, the text classifier fastText is used to process text data and the Inception v3 network to process image data. Our results show that the late fusion models perform best in our setting. We conclude that these models generally learn which of the baseline models to ’trust’, while early fusion and the TBVA models learn more abstract concepts. As future work, we would like to examine how the TBVA models perform on other tasks, such as ad similarity.

[pt] APRIMORANDO A SÍNTESE DE IMAGENS A PARTIR DE TEXTO UTILIZANDO TRANSFERÊNCIA DE APRENDIZADO U2C / [en] IMPROVING TEXT-TO-IMAGE SYNTHESIS WITH U2C - TRANSFER LEARNING

VINICIUS GOMES PEREIRA 06 February 2024 (has links)
[en] Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are unsupervised models that can learn from an indefinitely large amount of images. On the other hand, models that generate images from language queries depend on high-quality labeled data that is scarce. Transfer learning is a known technique that alleviates the need for labeled data, though it is not trivial to turn an unconditional generative model into a text-conditioned one. This work proposes a simple, yet effective fine-tuning approach, called Unconditional-to-Conditional Transfer Learning (U2C transfer). It can leverage well-established pre-trained models while learning to respect the given textual condition conditions. We evaluate U2C transfer efficiency by fine-tuning StyleGAN2 in two of the most widely used text-to-image data sources, generating the Text-Conditioned StyleGAN2 (TC-StyleGAN2). Our models quickly achieved state-of-the-art results in the CUB-200 and Oxford-102 datasets, with FID values of 7.49 and 9.47, respectively. These values represent relative gains of 7 percent and 68 percent compared to prior work. We show that our method is capable of learning fine-grained details from text queries while producing photorealistic and detailed images. Our findings highlight that the images created using our proposed technique are credible and display a robust alignment with their corresponding textual descriptions.

The impact of a visual approach used in the teaching of grammar when embedded into writing instruction : a study on the writing development of Chinese first year university students in a British university in China

Gaikwad, Vinita January 2013 (has links)
Born into a visual culture, today’s generation of learners generally prefer a visually-rich multimodal learning environment. Tapping into the potential of visuals in language pedagogy, this study was aimed at discovering the impact of a visual presentation of grammatical concepts related to sentence structure on student writing. The study used a mixed methods design to analyse the impact of the visual approach first by statistically measuring sentence variety and syntactic complexity of student pre and post intervention texts and then using interviews to explain the nature of the impact of visuals on student conceptual understanding and its effect on their writing development. Statistical findings reveal that the experimental groups of Chinese students who were taught grammatical concepts in the context of writing instruction using a visual approach outperformed the students in the control groups who were given similar lessons in the context of writing instruction but using traditional printed hand-outs. Qualitative findings suggest that the visuals seems to have increased these students’ conceptual understanding of grammatical items that were taught, and this resulted in more sophisticated and syntactically complex texts after the intervention. The study supports the theory of contextualized teaching of grammar and proposes the use of external visuals that lead to internal visualization based on the cognitive theory of multimodal learning. In so doing, it extends the use of visual learning to grammar pedagogy. However, the findings also suggest that the visual approach would not work effectively in cultures that promote rote learning and decontextualized exercises in grammar with the sole aim of passing the exams. A shift in attitude towards grammar pedagogy in China is deemed necessary.
