Lavigne, Éric 13 April 2018 (has links)
The aims of this study were to establish the prevalence of psychotropic drug use and to measure the associations between a high level of job strain and an imbalanced extrinsic efforts-rewards ratio with the use of psychotropic drugs among Quebec’s correctional officers (CO’s). Another aim was to examine if interpersonal violence was associated with psychotropic drug use. Finally, we have tested if interpersonal violence at work was an intermediate factor in the causal pathway between psychosocial risk factors at work and psychotropic drug use. The prevalence of psychotropic drug use was 14.7 %. Job strain was not associated with psychotropic drug use among Quebec’s CO’s in our study. An imbalanced extrinsic efforts-rewards ratio was statistically associated with psychotropic drug use. When considering interpersonal violence at work, intimidation was not associated with psychotropic drug use, but psychological harassment was. Finally, interpersonal violence at work was not an intermediate variable in the association between psychosocial risk factors at work and psychotropic drug use.

A case study of incarcerated males participating in a canine training program

Currie, Nikki S. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology / Fred O. Bradley / The number of animal training programs in correctional facilities has increased in the past 25 years. Anecdotal accounts have informally assessed the efficacy of prison training programs; however, only limited systemic studies have been conducted (Britton & Button, 2005; Furst, 2006). Preliminary information from anecdotal accounts and narratives indicates the potential these programs have to impact inmate behavior, self- esteem, staff and inmate morale, and community perceptions of offenders (Cushing & Williams, 1995; Harkrader, Burke, & Owen, 2004). There is also an indication inmate trainers learn responsibility, patience, coping skills, and vocational skills (Britton & Button, 2005; Merriam-Arduini, 2000; Turner, 2007). This qualitative study presents preliminary findings from the following five participant perspectives on the perceived outcomes of a canine training program in a correctional facility where inmates train assistance, therapy, rescue, and medical alert canines: (a) inmate trainers, (b) former inmate trainers, (c) non-trainer inmates who are not involved in the training program, (d) staff, and (e) the researcher. Once trained, the canines are adopted as assistance dogs for individuals in need. Data collected from in- depth interviews with current inmate trainers, former inmate trainers, non-trainer inmates, and staff, and audio and video recordings, researcher observations, and a researcher developed scale indicated the following themes which emerged from the study: there are positive emotional outcomes and positive practical outcomes for inmate trainers who work with dogs in the training program. Positive emotional outcomes for inmate trainers include the following: (a) providing social support, (b) gaining a sense of pride, (c) serving as a feeling of giving back to society, (d) increasing personal patience, (e) humanizing the inmate trainers, and (f) improving self-esteem. Positive practical outcomes for inmate trainers emerged in the following areas: (a) improving responsibility, (b) having a positive impact on the prison environment, (c) providing opportunities to help others, (d) using goal setting, (e) gaining employability skills, and (e) having a positive effect on behavior. Results from this study will add to existing literature and research in the field of animal-assisted interventions and rehabilitation programs with human beings, specifically those in correctional facilities. In addition, results from this study will assist correctional administration in the design, implementation, and evaluation of dog training programs in prisons.

Outsider Buddhism : a study of Buddhism and Buddhist education in the U.S. prison system

McIvor, Paul 28 November 2011 (has links)
Buddhist prison outreach is a relatively recent development, in the United States of America and elsewhere, and has yet to be chronicled satisfactorily. This thesis traces the physical, legal and social environment in which such activities take place and describes the history of Buddhist prison outreach in the USA from its earliest indications in the 1960s to the present day. The mechanics of Buddhist prison outreach are also examined. Motivations for participating in Buddhist prison outreach are discussed, including Buddhist textual supports, role models and personal benefits. This paper then proposes that volunteers active in this area are members of a liminal communitas as per Victor Turner and benefit from ‘non-player’ status, as defined by Ashis Nandy. The experiences of the inmates themselves is beyond the scope of this thesis. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

Privatization of prisons

Tshweu, Podile Samuel 11 1900 (has links)
Private prisons in South Africa are still premature but it will be increased because negotiations are on the track. The government should take a more serious look at private prisons as an alternative to public production of correctional service due to its efficiency. It is clear that the privatization of correctional facilities is a viable option for the future of correctional facilities. The expansion of privatization in this country will depend upon public and political confidence that private prisons will as effectively and accountable as public prisons. Private prisons have also demonstrated to have other advantages such as continuous audits on site. The aim of this study is to provide some insight into the privatization of prisons. / Penology / M.A. (Penology)

Outonomie in gevangeskap : 'n ekosistemiese perspektief

Van Lill, Jacob Johannes 06 1900 (has links)
The traditional Newtonian approach to science is based on three fundamental assumtions, namely linear causality, reductionism and objectivity. Serious criticism is increasingly being brought against these fundamental assumptions of the Newtonian approach. Specifically the systemic and ecosystemic approaches have presented alternative ways of thought (epistemology). The mos t contemporary epistemology, namely the ecosystemic approach, is based on autonomy, structure-determinism, attribution of meaning and constructivism. These ecosystemic principles were used in this study to reconceptualize problems associated with prisoners, problems previously approached in a Newtonian way. This new conceptualization was practically illustrated in the psychotherapeutic process with prisoners. In this process autonomy of the prisoner, therapist and the prison system was promoted. This conceptualization present a scientifically justified basis for thinking about correctional systems. / Psychology / M.A. (Sielkunde)

The Koza Centre - an alternative to the custody of federally sentenced women in Canada

Prouse, Stephanie 28 October 2016 (has links)
This practicum explores potential for a new prison typology for federally sentenced women within Canada. The Koza Centre is an alternative to designs and practices currently in place that have the potential to create barriers to successful rehabilitation and reintegration. The primary intention of this work is to understand the issues and needs that are shared by many women who have come into conflict with the law and respond with an appropriate design. The methodology for this includes a brief history of women’s imprisonment in Canada and current political contexts, an analytical framework focused on overall well-being, and precedent studies. From this, programming and strategies have been developed that inform an evidence-based design. The result is a design focused on rehabilitation through the building of healthy relationships, ties to the community, programming that fosters successful reintegration, and supportive interior design that facilitates the well-being of those within the space. / February 2016

Brassard, Virginie 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis aim to understand and analyze the experiences of individuals placed in pretrial detention. More specifically, this study aims to clarify that lived on the judicial and prison components involved in a remand. We want more free from the felling of such an investment. Finally, we wanted to reflect on the use of pretrial detention from the perspective of justice based on risk management and on the logic of efficiency, effectiveness and accountability. To do this, we used a qualitative approach to conduct our twenty-three interviews with men and women incarcerated awaiting trial in four detention facilities in Quebec. From these interviews, two main themes emerged, namely The judicial and prison experiences of the accused, marked by uncertainty, incomprehension, helplessness, dependency, difficult conditions of detention, losses and expectation and Sentiments from a remand, marked by suffering, injustice and the urgency out of this temporary situation. It is clear from our analysis that the way the system is administered justice, public opinion and the policies in effect have an impact on how to manage the use of remand in promoting the opposite of its original. Thus, the measurement is to be conducted at the expense of the main actor: the accused.

Specializovaná oddělení ve výkonu trestu odnětí svobody / Specialized departments in the prison

Mašínová, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with specialized departments instituted in prisons for persons who are in jail execution. It picks up on the bachelor's thesis on compulsory treatment of persons while the imprisonment. Its sub-objective is to introduce the issue of prison system as a whole, apprise of the specific groups of convicted offenders who are currently put into specialized departments. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and empirical. Theoretical part presents the development of the prison system, the philosophy of punishment and highlights the humanization of the Czech prison system. The section, which is dedicated to specialized departments, itemizes the different types of these departments. An example of concrete prison which establishes such department is also always presented. More attention is paid to the Světlá nad Sázavou Prison, to its conception and to its specialized department for mothers with children. The objective of the thesis was to find out what view of Světlá nad Sázavou Prison with its specialized department take the citizens of Světlá nad Sázavou and the neighbouring residents and how the media affects the overall insight into this concernment or what other factors assert.

Prognóza vývoje velikosti a struktury vězeňské populace v ČR / Forecast of the size and structure of the prison population in the CR

Koňařík, Martin January 2013 (has links)
Forecast of the size and structure of the prison population in the CR Abstract: Forecasting of prison population in the Czech Republic is almost an unexplored topic. To the whole prison system as a topic is also devoted little space in the literature. The most advanced methods of forecasting of prison populations cannot be used to the Czech data, which are used in countries with a long tradition of it. The data are not connected between Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior, and also differ in their definitions. It is therefore necessary to use a simplified method, which correspond to the data sources. The process is also interfered with unexpected external factors such as the amnesty of the President of the Republic on the 1 January 2013. Models for convicted expected forecast decline in their number by the end of 2013 to 12 to 19 thousands. Models further assume that a decline in 2013 would take place, even if there were no amnesty. Models for the accused assume their fluctuation around the same values. Follow-up calculations show that the state would save significantly by the projection models variants and also the burden on prison officers in correctional facilities would be reduced to 2.1 to 3.2 prisoners per guard from the current 3.5 prisoners per guard. Keywords: prison projection,...

Nguimbi, Arnold 14 March 2008 (has links)
The concept of prison is recurring in African literature of French expression. Its device of enfermement of the men in a closed space goes up truly at the colonial period. The many punitive methods which had course in Africa pre-colonial privileged more other forms of sanction the prison. With the Occidental installation, the African housing obtains a particular and singular structure. The prison is part from now on of the penal policies of first choice. The writers, Ibrahima Ly in "Toiles d’araignées", Henri Djombo in "Le mort vivant", Auguste Moussirou Mouyama through "Parole de vivant" an d Antoine Bangui in "Prisonnier de Tombalbaye" show the complexity of this new phenomenon. They evoke the atypical living conditions to know: overpopulation, hygiene, scarcity of food etc. The prison degrades the man instead of helping it to become aware of the interest of its sorrow compared to the offended company. But in spite of these deprivations, the prison can be a true springboard which can make it possible those which do not succumb to violences, to reconsider the company. They fight all that can prevent with the man from opening out
