The work is considered by the prisoners as an opportunity to earn money and at the same time as a brief scape from their reality. Besides, the prison labor has a variety of values which are associated to values expressed by the ones who are not at prison. Therefore the prison labor is conceived as something highly positive which gives the prisoners the citizenship passport. Even when the feminine prisoners do not agree with the work at prison, they are forced to work as the work is conceptualized as something which might rescue the criminals, offering them the possibility of being reintegrated in society.

Ženy ve Vězeňské službě České republiky / Women in the Prison Service of the Czech Republic

DUCHKOVÁ, Helena January 2007 (has links)
The Prison Service of the Czech Republic has passed through a period of transition from the totalitarian conception of punishment and detention to a humanitarian one. The chief goal of the new philosophy of treating prisoners is to reach a positive change in the behaviour of a convicted person, so that he/she will be capable of living in compliance with the laws of this country in the future.Within the framework of this transformation the proportion of expert workers in the Prison Service of the Czech Republic increases, these expert workes being not only men, but women too. This degree work inquires into the role of women in the Czech penal system and provides answers to affrairs related to this aspect. The primary goal was the monitoring of women working in individual prisons and inquiry into their working risks and contributions. The authoress chose a combination of qualitative and quantitative research in order to verify hypotheses.

Sociální začleňování osob propuštěných z výkonu trestu / Social Including of Convicted Offenders Left from Prison

PROCHÁZKOVÁ, Andrea January 2010 (has links)
The title of the thesis is Social Integration of People Released from the Prison. The theoretical part describes current situation concerning living conditions of the people sentenced to the prison, that are determined by legal standards in Czech Republic and by internal regulations of each jail house. These conditions form the personality of convicts and influence their social situation, relationships, and connections. The convicts need after the release to be helped with their integration into the society the most and also to be helped with handling their social situation to avoid recidivism. The aim of the diploma work is to describe problems of individuals released from the prison and the process of resocialization in detail. The thesis also provides the survey of possibilities for helping these people, thus service provided for people with inability to adapt to a society and types of facilities dealing with this target group. The practical part was conceived as the qualitative research in form of case studies using semi-structured interviews with the individuals released from the prison. I asked eight clients 28 questions in following categories: social situation of clients before the sentence, their life while imprisoned, their return to freedom and cooperation of the clients with institutions. There was also performed subsidiary quantitative research within the diploma work. I inquired social workers supervising released adults two questions, using e-mail correspondence. The questions were concerning the most frequent problems they had to deal with, after a client was released from the prison, and also services in Czech Republic{\crq}s system that workers missed in helping the target group. I outlined the comparison of the results coming out of my investigation with the current situation in related area, and also with other investigations at the end of my thesis. I recommend for improving the situation of the released individuals from prison to establish institutions with complete range of assistance, multi focused team, and the support in employing the people with criminal records as the high quality instrument of their social integration.

Desigualdades espaciais e prisões na era da globalização neoliberal: fundamentos da insegurança no atual período / Spatial inequalities and prisons in neoliberal globalization: fundamentals of uncertainty in the current period

James Humberto Zomighani Junior 06 December 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis was to understand as socio-spatial inequalities are magnified at different scales of analysis, from municipality to state, considering the territory use of the state of São Paulo by penal system. It was demonstrated how prison, an object of the penal system, promotes spatial inequalities not only by inflated consumption of economic resources from the state budget, but also by creating stigmatized individuals and locations. However, despite the exponential increase in resources to expand São Paulo prison system in recent years, the prison remains ineffective in combating crime. Moreover, it consumes increasingly larger sums of public funds at the expense of other areas and social demands. The inequalities enlarged by this process may account for part of the populations feelings of insecurity in times of neoliberal globalization. The prison system _ the set of all prisons that are organized to meet different regimes of detention _ works selectively, serving hegemonic political-economic interests in detriment of ensuring equal rights for all different social individuals that comprise the whole of Brazilian society. Thus, the criminal selectivity involves not only combating crimes, but also reprehending non-hegemonic social individuals, the most repressed by the state penal system. The imprisonment, together with two other contemporary social processes _ selectivity of police action and discrimination between social classes in the courts _, as well as the selective choice of territories used for deployment of new prisons, expressed the reproduction of spatial inequalities in the State of São Paulo at the beginning of the 21st Century. As alternatives to prison, theoretical possibilities have been demonstrated to reverse this process of expansion of spatial inequalities, and to find other solutions to social conflicts. Those alternatives involve redirecting the use of the surplus capital by the State, as well as creating social awareness about the key mechanisms that support criminal and prison systems in contemporary society; which could promote cultural and structural changes leading to the end of prisons. The new possibilities of social and economic resources of the state could reduce spatial inequalities, converging with other ways of dealing with contradictions of the current contemporary capitalist society. A rather complex theoretical and political debate would be essential for constituting a new civilization project for São Paulo and for Brazil, held from a unprecedented contribution from geographical science.

Monitoramento eletrônico de penas e alternativas penais / Penal electronic monitoring and alternative sentencing

Alceu Corrêa Junior 09 April 2012 (has links)
The search for alternatives to prison is old, and electronic surveillance has emerged as a technological solution. The cultural context of the United States at the end of the twentieth century has propitiated the emergence of electronic monitoring, also influenced by utilitarism and by the culture of offense control. Monitoring should respect the principles of Democratic Rule of Law (human dignity) and to be linked to the preventive purposes of sentence (positive special prevention). By itself it does not decrease the prison population and it does not reduce recidivism, but the economic gains and the good results obtained by other countries can not be ignored. Thus, foreign experience shows good results in the use of surveillance along with programs of social support. In Brazil, the electronic monitoring was introduced by law in criminal enforcement and as a precautionary measure. It would be interesting if it could be established as a way of prison enforcement (alternative to prisons). It could be also expected to enforce restrictive penalties of rights that require monitoring, consolidating an alternative system of penalties that can promote prevention and replace the prison for minor offenses. The electronic monitoring restricts fundamental rights and thus it should be provided by law, limited to the restriction, applied when it is necessary with the least visibility.

Trajectoires et dynamiques carcérales au féminin. Le cas de Lima / Trajectories and dynamics in a women’s prison. The case of Lima / Trayectorias y dinámicas carcelarias femeninas. El caso de Lima

Constant, Chloé 21 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis studies the trajectory of incarcerated women in the Peruvian prison Chorrillos I in Lima and analyzes the influence of social inequalities and detainees’ life-paths on the dynamics of this prison. Interviews with the inmates reveal a range of similarities in their trajectories before incarceration, from gendered domination schemes, socio-economic insecurity and life as single-mothers, to the search for survival strategies. Cross-examining the study of their trajectories with analyses of social, ethnic and gender relations provides an understanding of strategies used by these women to adapt to the prison environment, as well as the relationships between all the actors, and reveals the specific characteristics of a particular prison universe.

The participation of women in Peruvian armed conflict [1980-2000] : A study about female ex combatants’ experience as a tool of interpretation of national reconciliation and reconstruction

Boutron, Camille 15 December 2009 (has links)
This investigation analyzes the participation of women in Peruvian armed conflict between 1980 and 2000 as well as their reintegration to civil life. The gender perspective exceeds political and ideological divisions of actors who got confronted during conflict. It helps to show a new approach of armed violence phenomenon as well as topics of conflict resolution. This work demonstrates how the difficult reintegration of female ex combatants to civil society comes with a gender violence which can be interpreted as an extension of armed violence as well as a reflect of the power institutionalized in Peruvian society. This investigation leans on a long field work most of it realized in maximum security prison in Lima. It emphasizes the evolution of interdependence between private and public spheres, which control is identified as a stake for the renormalization of social gender relationships after an armed conflict.

The case of the transformation of Valparaiso’s former prison (Chile)

Van Diest Honorato, Camila 16 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis studies the transformation of Valparaiso’s former prison into a cultural space, from the moment of its clearance in 1999. Starting from a fieldwork based on in-depth interviews, written press material and other secondary sources, the investigation examines the singular configurations which contributes to the recovery of this space stigmatized because of its former functions. In this regard, the relations between the prison world and the art and culture world as well as the administration modes half way between the institutional and the civic, are analyzed. This thesis argues that the uninhabited infrastructures are not “neutral”, but are rooted into the urban space, forming the framework of collective memories and are of significations which go beyond merely functional characteristics. In this way this investigation explores the effects of the former prison on the symbolic capital and the work of local artists, framed in a situation of material precariousness. Reciprocally, this research analyses the re-appropriations of the space and to what extent they tend to legitimise the former prison itself. In the context of the designation of Valparaíso as world heritage by the Unesco in 2003, and more broadly of the neoliberal economic Chilean system, the former prison appears as a platform for diverse mega infrastructure projects, with the aim of boosting the city through strategies based on patrimonialization, tourism and services. In this regard, the thesis explores the conflict dimension of the location, by taking into account the official promotion speeches of these megaprojects, the forms of resistance they are confronted to, and the challenges experienced by the occupants themselves to organise and consolidate a common project.

Sexual practices in South African prisons from the perspective of Christian Ethics

Shayi, Frank 04 November 2008 (has links)
Sexual practices in prisons the world over are almost the same. Men incarcerated for many years in limited space with other men without the opportunity for normal heterosexual sexual outlet end up practicing homosexual sex. South African prisons are not an exception. In this dissertation I tackled a number of issues from a Christian Ethics perspective, with a slant from the Evangelical wing of Christianity as this is my background. The few issues I investigated from a South African prison system are the following. Firstly the issue of homosexuality was looked at from an Evangelical perspective. The conclusion was that the practice of homosexuality is a sin just like any other sexual deviation from the God ordained sex within marriage. Secondly empirical research was done to verify homosexual sex in prisons in South Africa. The results of this research confirmed that homosexual sex acts are a daily occurrence in our prisons. The results also showed that the aspect of indecent assault, forced or coerced homosexual sex acts now classified as “male rape,” was rife in prisons. Other factors related to this matter were that prison gangs and Correctional members’ complicity aggravated this issue of “male rape”. Thirdly we looked at the policy of “no sex in prison” as set out by the Department of Correctional Services. A number of discrepancies were uncovered. Firstly, there is unfair discrimination in the treatment of heterosexuals and homosexuals in prisons. Whereas heterosexuals are legally barred from having sex with their spouses while in prison, homosexuals are having sex in prison with their partners. Although the DOCS insists on the policy of no sex in prison, they appear to be condoning it in that they provide free condoms to inmates. In accordance with the stipulation of the Bill of Rights regarding unfair discrimination, the DOCS should treat inmates equally. To make matters worse, the South African Government has sanctioned same sex unions but failed to put in place effective control measures in correctional service centres to ensure that the policy of no sex in prison is not undermined. The DOCS should look at either allowing heterosexuals to have conjugal visits or ensure that homosexuals are not put together in the same cell, so as to adhere to this policy. Fourthly the issue punishment and rehabilitation was also investigated. This was done from a Christian ethical perspective. The Department of Correctional Services says that their objective is not to punishment but to rehabilitate. The discussion showed that putting convicted criminals in prison was a punishment on its own. It was further discussed that punishment is biblical, and that whilst punishment should be left to God, He in turn has put governments on earth as His servants to mete out punishment to those who deserve it. It was also discussed that rehabilitation does not happen automatically, that it needs a buy in by the individual concerned as seen from the examples of individuals cited in the thesis. Lastly, the causes of such sexual behaviour in prison were investigated. Corrupt officials, overcrowding and inadequate food supply, among others, are matters to be rectified in dealing with this problem. Alternatives to jail sentences for minor offences are also strongly suggested so as to alleviate the problem of overcrowding. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / unrestricted
