THE QUESTION OF GOD: PHENOMENOLOGY, HERMENEUTICS, AND REVELATION IN JEAN-LUC MARION AND PAUL RICOEURDahl, Darren E. 10 1900 (has links)
<p>This dissertation examines the thought of Jean-Luc Marion in light of his treatment of divine revelation and in connection to the hermeneutic phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur. It argues, first, that Marion’s thought bears within itself significant ambiguities that are determined by the legacies of the key concepts which organize his work: ‘givenness’ (<em>donation</em>) and saturation. Secondly, it also argues that even if a way can be found to resolve these ambiguities the resultant proposal does not meet the criticism raised by Paul Ricoeur in reference to phenomenologies of religion that remain determined by a ‘Husserlian idealism.’ As a result, the dissertation offers a study of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of revelation in an effort to displace Marion’s account and offer an alternative proposal. Specifically, it treats the connection of Ricoeur’s proposed transformation of phenomenology through hermeneutics, the idea of a hermeneutics of testimony that is generated as a result of that transformation, and Ricoeur’s notion of revelation as being articulated in reference to the ‘world of the text.’ By focusing on the notion of ‘anteriority’ throughout the analysis, the dissertation argues that not only does Marion’s work remain limited by its formal commitments to pure apparition, but it fails to access the sort of radical anteriority that it seeks. This is so because it remains tied to a philosophy of consciousness which is blocked from accessing the pre-reflective level of belonging that is made accessible by Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology. By making this argument, the dissertation provides a critical analysis of Marion’s work from the perspective of divine revelation and, furthermore, brings that work into conversation with Paul Ricoeur. This important engagement between Ricoeur and Marion has not been adequately addressed in the current secondary literature and this dissertation fills that gap.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A pie in a very bleak sky? : analysis and appropriation of the promise sayings in the seven letters to the churches in Relevation 2-3Wilson, Mark W. 11 1900 (has links)
This study of the promise sayings elucidates the motif of victory as the book's macrodynamic
theme. Through intentional examination, the thesis finds the issue epitomized throughout Revelation
on two levels-formally (re structure) and materially (re content). Jesus as Victor over death
and the dragon desires the Asian believers to be prepared for his soon coming. The victors are
promised eschatological rewards if they overcome various internal and external threats.
In mapping out the dramatic scenario Chapter 1 explores afresh such background issues as
authorship and audience. The pagan religious environment, represented by the Artemis and emperor
cults, is demonstrated to be adversarial. Chapter 2 looks at four situations in Revelationthe
rhetorical, historical, apocalyptic, and prophetic. Their composite exigences point to an early
dating in the late 60s. Chapter 3 postulates that chiasmus is Revelation's macrostructure, and a
chiastic model is proposed. Chapter 4 examines several proposed forms for the seven letters,
such as edicts, oracles, and epistles. We conclude that they are a mixtum compositum-best
called prophetic letters.
Chapter 5 explores the sociological significance of victory in the Greco-Roman world.
Through the use of language such as vLKaw and images like the palm branch, John motivates his
audience toward the ideal of victory. Chapter 6 investigates the text of the promises and their cotexts
as reflected intertextually in traditions of biblical literature. Local references are also determined
to contribute to a multivalent interpretation of the promise imagery. Chapter 7 surveys the
eschatological fulfillment of the promises, especially in the new Jerusalem. The rewards of spiritual
provision, heavenly place, and divine person serve to incite the saints to victory. Chapter 8
investigates the appropriation of the promises for the time and the text world of Revelation. A multiplicity
of functions for the promise sayings is established.
This study shows that the promises function as prophetic parenesis to help the saints endure
the coming tribulation. The possibility and reality of such a fulfillment and the appropriation of the
promises allow us to postulate that these promises to the victors are not vain pies in a very bleak

Ritual functions of the Book of Relevation: hope in dark timesVan Rensburg, Hanré Janse 06 1900 (has links)
Through a critical-functional, rather than literal, reading of the text of Revelation, this dissertation hypothesises a move beyond the paralysing constant reduction of hermeneutic meaning to two conventional poles when discussing hope – the early Christian movement’s hope through reversal, and contemporary nihilism. In order to do so in a responsible manner, it is necessary to study other research done on the topics of eschatology and hope – especially as seen in the book of Revelation. For this reason, the most popular and representative scholars of the Book of Revelation are studied. This overall look at current scholarships' views regarding the Apocalypse will help detect any possible missing elements in our approach to Revelation.
But no study of this topic can be considered near complete if other disciplines are not involved; in this case especially when moving on to a critical-functional reading of Revelation. This thesis thus features an exploratory study of the functioning of ritual and hope within the human psyche; from archaeological to psychological perspectives. This emphasises the importance of, and leads into, the possibilities of a functional reading of the Book of Revelation.
All of the above work leads to a re-evaluation of the success of hope as metanarrative for today. The suggestion is that Christian hope is not imaginary, but is irreducibly imaginative. For “reality is never just the world as it exists; it is the world as it is experienced through the lenses of social perception” (Barr 2010:636). / New Testament / D. Th. Vergelyking van `n Evangelies-Gereformeerde skrifbeskouing met ander Gereformeerde skrifbeskouingeMienie, Johannes Diederick 30 November 2004 (has links)
The Evangelical Reformed Church is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary. This study investigates this church's unique view of Scripture and places it within the broader context of a Reformed approach. To this end, a literary study is conducted, whereby the Evangelical Reformed conviction is compared to that of Calvin and Barth, as put forward in their Institutions and Church Dogmatics, respectively. This procedure allows for a collation of the Evangelical Reformed stance and the Reformed view. Since the belief regarding Scripture has an effect on many aspects of the traditional reformed dogma, several bibliological facets are singled out, namely, revelation, authority, inspiration, and the inception of the canon. By way of illustration, these details are considered with specific reference to the Reformed doctrine of Predestination. The goal of this exercise is to evaluate the application of the bibliological dogma in the formulation of theology. / Systematic Theology & Theological Ethics / M.Th

The Trinity and the Christian life : issues of integration and orientationHartwig, Paul Bruce 97 1900 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to relate the Scriptural revelation of God's
nature to the normal Christian life. It analyses the experiential factors
that originally gave rise to a triune awareness of God, arguing that a
contemporary recovery of those seminal events is requisite for an
integration of the trinity into the Christian life. After a theological
summation of the biblical revelation, the thesis then explores the nature
of the orientation of the trinity within the Christian life. This orientation
is brought about by observing the harmonious arrangement of the
different Persons within the Godhead. Once this is done we can then
ensure that this arrangement finds an echo and corresponding imprint
within the Christian life. As the Christian consistently integrates that
tripartite relationship into the Christian life, the doctrine of the trinity
will be a continual source of sustenance and direction for life and
godliness. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / Th. M. (Systematic Theology)

Revelation's hymns : commentary on the cosmic conflictGrabiner, Steven Charles 02 1900 (has links)
Topic
This study examines the hymnic pericopes found at Revelation 4.8-11; 5.9-14; 7.10-
12; 11.15-18; 12.10-12; 15.3,4 and 19.1-8 in light of the cosmic conflict theme. It
considers that this theme is a major contributor to the development of Revelation’s
plot, and thus the hymnic sections are informed by, and inform the understanding of
the controversy.
Purpose
Recognizing that the majority of critical studies give interpretative primacy to the
social and political realities that existed in the Roman Empire at the time of
Revelation’s composition, there is need for an examination of the storyline from the
perspective of issues that are clearly of narratival importance. This study argues that
the cosmic conflict is at the center of the book’s concerns, and attempts to determine
the function of the hymns in relation to the ongoing controversy. Previous
examinations of the hymnic sections have either considered them to be a response
and/or parody to Roman liturgy, examples of God’s unquestioned sovereignty, or
expressions of thematic overtones found throughout the book. While all these
approaches make a contribution to a greater understanding of the hymns, the relation
of the hymns to the ever-present conflict theme has not been explored. This study allows the hymnic sections to engage with the larger narrative issue as to who is truly
the rightful sovereign of the universe.
Conclusion
This study found that a close examination of the text confirms that the cosmic conflict
is the major motif in the narrative, and that it does not simply serve as a metaphor for
political realities. It also concluded that the temple/throne room imagery found throughout the storyline, should have a controlling influence upon interpretation. This
setting provides the backdrop for understanding the origins and issues of the
controversy. Another conclusion of the study is that the only way for the controversy
to be resolved is for God to reveal Himself in such a manner that the truth about Him
is manifest. Finally, it was seen that the hymns do provide commentary on the conflict,
by acclaiming God’s goodness and right to rule, despite the undertones of Satan’s
accusations. / New Testament / D. Th. (New Testament)

La doctrine de la prophétie chez Maïmonide (m. 601/1204) entre pensée juive et pensée musulmane / The doctrine of Prophecy in Maimonides' Philosophy between Judaic and Islamic ThoughtAl-Kayyali, Abdul-Hameed 22 June 2012 (has links)
Maimonides (d. 601/1204) is universally recognized as a leading rabbinic authority in Judaism. His eminence as a philosopher made him an indispensable source in Jewish, Christian and Islamic philosophical and religious thought. The present study aims to analyze the origins of the doctrine of prophecy in Maimonides' philosophy by studying, first, the original sources and then to compare them with the works completed by Muslim philosophers, most notably, Fārābī, Ibn Sīnā and Ibn Bāğğa. Chapter I addresses Maimonides' definition of prophecy. Chapter II examines the role of imagination in the prophecy. Chapter III is devoted to the political implications of prophecy.

[en] FROM HISTORY OF THE WORD: A THEOLOGY OF REVELATION IN PAUL RICOEUR / [pt] DA HISTÓRIA À PALAVRA: A TEOLOGIA DA REVELAÇÃO EM PAUL RICOEURESDRAS COSTA BENTO 13 April 2015 (has links)
[en] The hermeneutics of the revelation s idea is one of the more authentic and original theological works of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. The author s two fundamental propositions present a concept of revelation that respects the idiosyncrasies fit to each literary gender of the Scripture and, at the same time, dialogues with a hermeneutic philosophy that provides an authentic dialectics between the truths of faith and the truths of reason. So, an opaque and authoritarian concept of the revelation is criticized and a polyphonic, polysemic, and analogical concept of revelation is claimed. The theoretical elements that implement the ricoeurian concept of revelation are: the world of the text, the hermeneutics of detachment, the speech as event and meaning, the poetic cathegory and the hermeneutics of the testimony. Through this living dialectics, one pretends to liberate the concept of revelation from dogmatic formulae and bring it back to the confessions of faith present in the prophetic, narrative, prescriptive, sapiential and hymnic speeches. The massive opacity of the concept of revelation can only be overcome through a hermeneutics of revelation that considers the polyphonic expressions that stem from the revelation in which the people of God s confession of faith are based.
