Corporate Social Responsibility and the Welfare of Nigerian Niger Delta Landowners

Oboh, Charles 01 January 2018 (has links)
The perception by any group of ineffectiveness in the dispensation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) to major stakeholders may result in friction, reduction in productivity, and an overall loss of social and economic capital. The problem addressed in this study, which represented the gap in knowledge and practice, was that CSR initiatives in the Niger Delta region lack a community-centric framework to ensure optimal and sustainable returns on CSR investments for multinational corporations and local Nigerian landowners. The purpose of the study was to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to experience CSR for Nigerian landowners in the Niger Delta, using Freeman's stakeholder theory and Grice's causal theory of perception. Data were obtained through interviews regarding the lived experiences of a sample of 15 participants selected through a purposeful nonrandom sampling from a variety of backgrounds. The data analysis using content and inductive techniques with NVivo illustrated the factors leading to a deeper understanding of what it means to experience CSR for landowners. The results include expectations from operators, activities of the operators in the Niger Delta, operators' relationship with land owners, and operators' need to take environmental responsibility. The study has the potential to enhance the CSR managerial capacity of operators, resulting in peace and equity for all. The findings may lead to peaceful coexistence between the operators in the area and landowners with increased mutual benefits. The findings may also result in a stable global supply of energy, oil, and gas, as well as a healthier environment for landowners, ultimately resulting in local and global positive social change.

Écriture philosophique et transformation politique en France, 1750-1780 / Discursive practices and representations of politics : writing, transformation of man and modification of the public sphere in political philosophy in France between 1750 and 1790.

Revel, Ariane 07 December 2017 (has links)
What is the purpose of the philosopher in politics? We examine the way in which this question has been posed and the way in which it was answered in France in the years from the mid-18th century to about 1780. For a context characterized both by the omnipresence of philosophical discourse and its lack of autonomy, we put forward our understanding of the way the possible effects of the political writings of philosophers are identified. Two problems then arise. On the one hand, there is the question of determining under what condition philosophical discourse on politics is deemed useful, and what type of hold it must have on its object to be evaluated as such. On the other hand, the question of the effects produced by the text should invite us to consider how the relationship between the philosopher and his readers is established through the text: how are the ideas communicated, and what are the direct consequences? What is the relationship between knowledge and action? Our investigation has taken two subsequent approaches. First, we sought to identify the terms in which the question of the effects of political works written by philosophers was raised in the second half of the eighteenth century. This has enabled us to highlight the fact that the usefulness of writing is envisaged in two dimensions: insofar as it is likely to affect the world but also insofar as it is likely to contribute to the progress of knowledge and to fuel an intellectual debate. In either case, the form and style of the work are considered central to ensure its effect on the reader and encourage him to think. In a second phase, we sought out examples of a particular genre: Rousseau and Diderot's writing on Corsica, Poland and Russia allowed us to analyze how the counseling philosopher defines his role in relation to the legislator but also attempts to elaborate a language which at the same time allows him to grasp his object in its singularity and to make himself heard by his reader. These two approaches have shown us a distinct sphere of the philosopher's word in politics. While keeping his distance from action, the philosopher is the man of truth; the gradual contestation of the reference to the philosopher as legislator leaves room for a critical use of knowledge. The political fecundity of the philosophical word then appears not in its capacity to institute but rather to facilitate imagining other possible institutions.

[en] I, WE, ALL OF US... TAMU JUNTO E MISTURADO: CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY(IES) AND DISCURSIVE STRATEGIES IN MEDIATIC SPACE OCCUPATION FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION / [pt] EU, NÓS, A GENTE ...TAMO JUNTO E MISTURADO: CONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADE(S) E ESTRATÉGIAS DISCURSIVAS NA OCUPAÇÃO DO ESPAÇO MIDIÁTICO PELA TRANSFORMAÇÃO SOCIAL

RENATA GASPAR NASCIMENTO 23 May 2017 (has links)
[en] This thesis seeks to provide deeper understandings of the relationship between media and social change in contemporary society, proposing an articulation between Critical Discourse Analysis and Interactional Sociolinguistics in the analysis of the identity construction process occurring in narratives of a subject recognized as social movement spokesman, during his participation in media-interactions. The data for this analysis is formed by personal narratives embedded in arguments materialized in the participation of MV Bill in the television show Câmara Ligada, aired by TV Câmara. MV Bill is one of the most important rappers of the Brazilian Hip Hop movement - he is also the founder of the Central Única das Favelas, CUFA (Central Organization of Slums); writer and filmmaker, both nationally and internationally recognized by his struggle for social change, especially those related to socioeconomic differences, racial prejudice and urban violence. Based on the tridimensional method for critical-discursive analysis proposed by Fairclough and adopting a flexible perspective of Labov s narrative model, the analysis is developed on three levels. For this purpose, the study considers pronominal alternation, resorting to Goffman s notions of structure of participation and format of production, to the concepts of frame as proposed by Bateson and Goffman, as well as to Goffman s notion of footing and to the concept of resistance in narrativization of social structures as used by Edwick and Silbey. The analysis identifies different identities constructed by MV Bill through stories that articulate the arguments he mobilizes in defense of his opinions on issues that concern the relationship between media and social inequality, urban violence, social movements and social and racial prejudices. By showing how, located in a media interaction, these identities are narratively constructed in arguments, the analysis highlights the discursive strategies deployed in the occupation of media agenda and space by a leader who carries the voice of resistance for social transformations. Furthermore, the thesis contributes to enhanced understandings about the importance of the media (and of those who work in it) for the establishment, maintenance and/or transformation of conditions for social exclusion in the current context of profound redefinition of concepts and values that characterize the historic moment in which we are participating.

This dissertation presents the result of a study about music and its influence in the life of youth and adolescents who are involved on the SUPERHAÇÃO Project, which aims preventing drug use and has been running at the public school Mario Spinelli in Sorriso, Mato Grosso State. The research sought to comprehend the identificacional meaning through the modality and evaluation categories that are present in the statements of youth and adolescents within a context of violence, alcoholism and drug use. The methodology was based on a qualitative and quantitative nature of research and used the application of questionnaires and interviews. The theoretical framework is based on the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), defended by Norman Fairclough (2001, 2003a); and on the Systemic-Functional Linguistic from Halliday (1994), that, under an identity perspective in postmodernity, discussed in Stuart Hall (2006), Manuel Castells (1999), Moita Lopes (2003) and Zygmunt Bauman (2001), served to support the analysis made here. The results extol the importance of SUPERHAÇÃO Project to the adolescents and evidence a great connection between them and the music. The results also show that music in English has taken on increasingly significant place in their lives, which explains the obvious emotional relationship and students’ strong will that music be present in English class. Thus, in a critical and emancipatory view, the musical practice on youth and adolescents lives become a tool to work drug use prevention, for it may be a place for reflective discussions that reach deeper aspects of the human character of each individual, acting directly on elements of their identity, and is indicated as a potential mechanism to face social adversity.

The object of the research is the analysis of the processes of training and practice of three photographers, artists and educators. João Roberto Ripper, founder of Programa Imagens do Povo developed in Complexo da Maré in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Peixoto, founder of the cultural producer Ensaio Brasil Produções ltda, operating in the city of Joao Pessoa in Paraiba, and Miguel Chikaoka, founder of the Associação Fotoativa, which develops its actions in the city of Belém in Pará. The three experiments develop actions of art education through the photographic language envisioning social change. The research focused on the formation processes and practices developed by these photographers, artists and educators. The present study arose from concerns that arise throughout the work of art and education in communities that I have been developing since 2003, where photography is also the instrument that I use to establish pedagogic and artistic relationship with the communities in which I work. How photography can be used as an artistic practice and educational reflection, inclusion and social transformation? These were the main questions that motivated me to pursue this research. To develop the study, it was used qualitative research. Thus, the data were organized and analyzed from interviews with respondents, the observation of workshops, experiences at their sites and the collection of projects developed by them, in different economical, social and cultural factors that characterize the communities where they operate. In the data analysis, it was found, among other things, that its formations were formed in an interdisciplinary way, by means of academic, technical and self-taught, who move between methodologies of popular education and public art activist slant, collaborative and relational, highlighting the consistent practice of photography as an incisive quality of these actions and art education conducted in the field of Teaching Visual Arts.

THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH OF THE PROVINCE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA IN THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATIO OF THE WESTERN CAPE 1960 - 1990

Haddad, Beverley Gail January 1992 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / This study reflects the vital role the church should play in the social transformation of society. It undoubtedly has the potential to be a strategic organisation for social change. However, in the past it has failed to reach that potential. The hope for the future is that the church will embrace that potential and become active in the process of social transformation. The Church of the Province of Southern Africa (CPSA) has been the researcher's spiritual home for her entire life. During this time, and particularly over the past five years, she has sought to find her place in the church's inflexible, bureaucratic and patriarchal structure. While this study was in the final stages of being written, the CPSA took the historic decision to ordain women to the priesthood. Her personal struggle had been vindicated. However, more importantly, the church's decision attests to that organisation's potential for creative change. Thus this study is dedicated to the members of the CPSA in the Diocese of Cape Town, in the hope that they will embrace the challenge, both as individuals and as a community to become active agents of social change. The field research was conducted during the period March 1989 to March 1990 by the researcher herself, who was a paid employee of the Diocese of Cape Town at the time. Both the promoter and co-promoter of this thesis supervised this research. The results were first published in August 1990 by the Diocese of Cape Town in a report entitled, Voices of the Church: An Anglican perspective on welfare and development in the Diocese of Cape Town. Permission to use the research material in this study has been granted by the Most Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu, and is acknowledged with thanks. There are many people who during that period enabled the research to take place because of their willingness, enthusiasm and interest: the Most Reverend Desmond Tutu; Bishop Edward the liaison Bishop; members of Chapter and Diocesan Council; the support committee; the 130 people in the parishes who so willingly shared of themselves and their opinions, and in many instances opened their homes; and the clergy of the diocese, who participated wholeheartedly in the process.
