Goethe and the Sublime / Das Erhabene bei Goethe

Koster, John M. 08 August 2013 (has links)
The dissertation situates the Goethean sublime in an obscured countermovement of resistance to the aestheticization the concept underwent in the 18th century. Before the encounter with the English aesthetic concept of the sublime, the German notion of das Erhabene (the sublime) named not a category of aesthetic experience, but a social affect. In contrast to the Sublime of Edmund Burke's theory, which explicitly excludes melancholy from the sources of the Sublime, das Erhabene is an affect related to the self-overcoming of melancholic subjectivity. As the aestheticized notion of the sublime displaced das Erhabene, Goethe became one of the most radical innovators of the aesthetics of the sublime. But as is demonstrated in chapters on The Sorrows of Young Werther, Elective Affinities, Faust and Wilhelm Meister, he did so with the aim of recovering the displaced meaning of das Erhabene as social affect. Goethe's sublime aims to show at every turn that the so-called "aesthetic experience" of the sublime is really displaced social affect. His treatment of the sublime therefore constitutes a radical critique of the establishment of aesthetics as an independent sphere of inquiry. There is for Goethe no way to understand aesthetic experience independently of its social context. By reconnecting the sublime it to the original social meaning of das Erhabene, Goethe recovers the aesthetics of the sublime as a means of mediating and facilitating the movement of subjectivity from frustrated stasis to divine creativity; i.e., from exclusion to participation in the material creation of reality.

Images in, through and for "The W/Word" : a revisioning of Christian art

Truter, Carmen Estelle 30 November 2007 (has links)
During the premodern era, images corresponded to the doctrines of ”The Word”, but in contemporary society this relationship is open and does not correspond to the divine Word. Because of our perceived, postmodern inability to respond to ancient Christian symbols, there is a need to revision these symbols and Christian spirituality. The result of such a revisioning would include an ”opening up” of ”The Word” and of traditional, worn symbols which have lost vitality in this milieu. Art produced with this in mind needs to make ”The Word” more currently accessible and relevant. Further, this revisioning would add significance and enhance the possibility of resurrecting language dealing with ”The Word”. In the process of revitalising old Christian imagery and language, I aim to show that the primary role of contemporary Christian art is to function metaphorically. Finally, I argue that Christian images can take on significance as contemporary images. / Art History Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Visual Arts)

Aleixo, Olinda Cristina Martins. January 2010 (has links)
Com isso, são gerados curiosos efeitos de ironia, visto que o texto convida o leitor a lançar um olhar crítico e sintonizado com o modo peculiar como essas produções leem a própria arte, relativizando as noções pré-concebidas acerca do fazer literário / Abstract: Comtenporary Art presents itself as a stage for experimentations and intensification of strategies of aesthetic elaboration that promote the questioning of artistic manifestation and make it problematic. Among the innumerable resources that engender this challenge, here we emphasize gaucherie, a procedure that is discussed by the critic Roland Barthes and acts as a critical and ironic bias, attributing to the artistic object an intentional aspect of "lowering", or, as the name itself suggests, a character of "deviation" because it is "left-handed", "crooked", and, by extension, apparently "maladjusted", "rough". Accordingly, this thesis specifically discusses how gaucherie works in literature, trying to make evident that this sensation of "deviation" or "lowering" is achieved as a result of a work with language based on the exploration of colloquial speech, the common sense discourse, images that assimilate the counter-sublime categories, such as the grotesque, kitsch, bad taste and the manifestations of laughter (comicality, parody, carnivalization), among other resources. In order to do so, texts written by the Brazilian authors Dalton Trevisan and Hilda Hilst and by the Portuguese authors José Cardoso Pires and Adília Lopes are analyzed. Such literary works reveal it is a process marked by the extreme awareness in the insertion of these aspects, which culminates in a self-referential movement, for the literary work introduces to discussion its own construction mechanisms. Thus, curious effects of irony are created, given that the text invites the reader to cast a critical eye to it, a critical look that is in tune with the peculiar way in which these productions read their own art, making relative the preconceived notions about literary manifestation / Doutor

Graham, Émile 08 1900 (has links)
Between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, William Blake (1757-1827), a romantic artist and poet, produced various illuminated works which unite text, images, and decorations set in the margins of the page. This thesis considers the iconography of these works, attempting to understand their visual motifs through the theoretical standpoint of “alterity”, a composite notion uniting three meanings: infinitude, or a quality of limitlessness; distinction, or the difference of what is “other”; and extension, suggesting a motion outside the self. The different chapters exemplify how this notion of “alterity” relates to contemporary and romantic theoretical constructs. Among the subjects considered are: “alterity” in itself, the significance of Blakean visual form, the sublime and the experience of awe, the representation of the body and of gender, and the relationship to the natural world. The thesis considers the Blakean iconography as a reflection of the imagination, guiding the reader towards a heightened capacity for vision and subjectivity. The “marginalium”, the decorative marginal element of the illustrated books, symbolizes such vision by a punctual means. The “floating figure”, a humanized and singular marginalium, underlies the different motifs, evoking the infinitude of human potential.

Imagination in Kant's Aesthetics

Unknown Date (has links)
在A版的主觀演繹中,康德談及一個判斷或對象知識的形成,通過「三重綜合」(threefold synthesis)的作用:直觀中領會的綜合(the synthesis of apprehension in intuition)、構想力中再生的綜合(the synthesis of reproduction in imagination)及概念中認定的綜合(the synthesis of recognition in a concept)。
