K problematice lexikálního minima na příkladě základní terminologie hudební vědy / Basic terms in musicology - an example for problematics of lexical minimum

The subject matter of the submitted graduation thesis was Basic Terms in Musicology - an Example for Problematics of Lexical Minimum. Processed section of musical terminology supposed to be a basis for recently scheduled German-Czech Academic Dictionary (GDTAW). Theoretic section of the Thesis is considered as explanation of basic terms of terminology concerning problematic of specialized language. Briefly is described evolution of german and czech musical terminology. Thesis concern regarding genesis process of new vocabulary with specific parts and bilingual vocabulary structure. Criterias for lexical units selection are described in capture "problematic of lexical minimum". Sorts of macrostructur and microstuctur of dictionaries are described as well. There is commented processing case of selected musical terms in detail in analytic part. As conclusion of the Thesis are selected examples of processed musical terms.

The Remediation of Students in Counseling Graduate Programs: Behavioral Indicators, Terminology, and Interventions

This study explored the concept of student remediation in counseling graduate programs by examining the behavioral indicators associated with student remediation, the terminology used to discuss student remediation, and remedial interventions and their effectiveness. Members of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) were electronically surveyed using a researcher-designed instrument, the Counseling Graduate Student Remediation Questionnaire. A total of 607 individuals participated in the study for a response rate of 28.8%. The results of this study indicated that the overall five behavioral indicators considered by participants as needing remediation were the following: receptivity to feedback; basic counseling skills; boundaries with clients, supervisors, and/or colleagues; openness to self-examination; and advanced counseling skills. Five factors were identified within the behavioral indicators based on which can be remediated: Factor I, Personal Competencies; Factor II, Professionalism; Factor III, Personal Challenges; Factor IV, Honesty; and Factor V, Clinical Competencies. Significant group differences were found between counselor educators' and doctoral students' perceptions of what needs remediation with counseling graduate students, as well as what can be remediated with students. Significant group differences also were present between administrative faculty and non-administrative faculty on perceptions of what needs remediation with students. The overall three most preferred terms by participants used to discuss students in remediation included: challenging, problems with professional competence, and problematic. For remedial interventions, participants perceived that increased supervision was often effective as an intervention and that referring or recommending to personal counseling was occasionally effective. The results of this study seemed indicative of a broadening perspective regarding the topic of remediation, with perceptions shifting toward a positive framework rather than the more pejorative historical approaches. Overall, the conclusion from this study was that student remediation is currently developing within the field as a distinct concept with many specific associated behavioral indicators, terminology, and interventions.

Um diálogo entre o ensino de Língua Portuguesa e as Ciências Naturais: a aquisição de termos no Ensino Fundamental / Acquisition process of Science terms in the Brazilian elementary school system

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar o processo de aquisição de alguns dos termos das Ciências Naturais por estudantes do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental em uma escola da Vila Brasilândia, localizada na zona norte da Cidade de São Paulo. Para se fazer o levantamento do nível de aquisição de termos pelos estudantes, utilizou-se um corpus constituído por 130 questionários específicos, que contêm 10 termos das Ciências Naturais frequentes em contextos definitórios e explicativos presentes em livros didáticos do 2.° ao 5.° ano, selecionados e distribuídos pelo MEC para todas as escolas públicas do Brasil. Para os diálogos teóricos, tomou-se como base os estudos da Psicolinguística realizados por Vigotski e as pesquisas em Lexicologia, Lexicografia, Terminologia e em Linguística Aplicada, desenvolvidas por vários autores, a exemplo de Estopà, Cabré, Lara, Coady, Lewis, Araújo e Souza e Krieger e Finatto. Com base na análise dos dados coletados e nos diálogos teóricos apresentados, constatamos algumas contradições que podem marcar o processo da aprendizagem em matéria de Ciências Naturais e, diante disso, apresentamos uma proposta de intervenção didática, buscando desenvolver atividades relacionadas à aquisição de léxico que poderiam auxiliar no ensino das Ciências Naturais. / This research aims to verify the acquisition process of natural science terms by students at an elementary school located on the outskirts of São Paulo City. In order to conduct this investigation of students vocabulary acquisition levels, it was used a corpus constituted by 130 specific questionnaires that contain 10 terms related to Sciences. These screened 10 words are often present on definitions, explanations and examples of common learning books (schoolbooks) that are selected and distributed to all public schools by Brazilian Education Ministry (MEC). The theoretical dialogues have been based upon Vygotskys psycholinguistic studies and also upon other studies in the fields of Lexicology, Lexicography, Terminology and of Applied Linguistics and which have been developed by many researchers, for example, Estopà; Cabré; Lara; Coady; Lewis; Araújo and Souza; Krieger and Finatto. Based on the analysis of the collected data and on the theoretical dialogues, it was possible to evidence some contradictions that may mark the overview of ones own learning in matter of Sciences.

Dicionário multilíngue de termos do setor feirístico: português, inglês, francês e italiano / Multilingual dictionary of key terms of the trade show sector: Portuguese, English, French and Italian

O Setor Feirístico tem grande relevância no cenário econômico nacional e internacional e está em constante expansão. Desse modo, a participação em feiras internacionais tornou-se o portão de entrada de produtos brasileiros no mercado externo por meio das exportações. Durante pesquisa realizada em nível de mestrado (GODOY, 2014), elaboramos um glossário bilíngue português-inglês/inglês-português dos termos fundamentais do setor feirístico. Dando continuidade a esse trabalho, o objetivo geral da pesquisa de doutorado é analisar a terminologia multilíngue português-inglês-francês-italiano desse setor, mais especificamente dos termos utilizados durante o processo de preparação, participação e pós-feira, tendo como objetivo específico a elaboração de um dicionário terminológico multilíngue para uso de profissionais, pesquisadores, estudantes das áreas de comércio exterior e relações internacionais e, especialmente, tradutores e intérpretes. A pesquisa está fundamentada nos conceitos e princípios da Terminologia, mais especificamente da Terminologia Multilíngue e Equivalência Terminológica (DUBUC, 1985, 1992), da Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia (CABRÉ, 1993, 1999), da Socioterminologia (GAUDIN, 1993), com especial atenção para a Variação Terminológica (FAULSTICH, 1998, 2001), e da Linguística de Corpus (SINCLAIR, 1966) com apoio em BERBER SARDINHA (2004). Para desenvolver este trabalho, reunimos corpora em português, inglês, francês e italiano (livros, artigos e revistas especializados, estudo de mercado das feiras, guias e manuais do expositor, trabalhos acadêmicos, manuais de participação em feiras produzidos por órgãos públicos e privados e leis sobre feiras). Para a coleta dos termos utilizamos o software para tratamento de corpora WordSmith tools (versão 6.0), desenvolvido por Mike Scott (2012), e os armazenamos em fichas terminológicas criadas com o apoio das ferramentas computacionais Access (2010) e SDL MultiTerm (2017). Os 311 termos estudados em cada língua foram analisados em seus contextos de uso e os ganchos terminológicos levantados para a busca e o estabelecimento das equivalências nas quatro línguas. Considerando a relevância da participação em feiras nacionais e internacionais para o crescimento da economia interna e para a expansão das exportações, nosso trabalho será útil tanto para os profissionais do setor quanto para pesquisadores, estudantes, tradutores e intérpretes que produzam textos nas línguas alvo de nosso estudo. / The trade show sector is of considerable importance in the Brazilian and international economic environment and it is constantly expanding. Therefore, participation in international trade shows has become the gateway for Brazilian products to reach foreign markets through exports. In an MA study (GODOY, 2014) we developed a bilingual glossary (portuguese-english/english-portuguese) of key terms of the trade show sector. Following on from this study, the overall aim of this PhD is to analyze the multilingual terminology (portuguese-english-french-italian) of this sector, more specifically the terms used during the process of preparation, participation and post-show, with the specific goal of compiling a terminological dictionary to be used by professionals, researchers, students of foreign trade and international relations areas as well as translators and interpreters. The study is based on Terminology concepts and principles, specifically the Multilingual Terminology and Terminological Equivalence (DUBUC 1985, 1992), the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CABRÉ, 1993, 1999), Socioterminology (GAUDIN, 1993), with special attention to Terminological Variation (FAUSTICH, 1998, 2001), and Corpus Linguistics (SINCLAIR, 1966; BERBER SARDINHA, 2004). To develop this work, we gathered corpora in portuguese, english, french and italian (books, specialized articles and magazines, market studies of trade shows, guides and manuals for exhibitors, academic papers, trade show manuals produced by public and private agencies and legislation on trade). To collect the terms WordSmith software (version 6.0) developed by Mike Scott (2012) was used and the key terms were stored in terminological records created from Microsoft Access (2010) and SDL MultiTerm (2017). The 311 terms studied in each language were analyzed in their contexts of use and terminological links used in the pursuit and establishment of equivalences in the four languages. This study emphasises the importance of participating in national and international trade shows for the growth of the domestic economy and the expansion of exports and helps professionals who work in this field, researchers, students, translators and interpreters who produce texts and translate from or into the languages of this study.

The Content Analysis of the Art Vocabulary Contained in Seven Sources of Visual Art Curricular Materials for the Elementary Grades

The problems of this investigation are the content analyses of the art vocabulary, the art-term definitions, and the art-vocabulary objectives in seven sets of visual art curricula for the elementary grades. The hypotheses are that the formulators of three or more of the sources will agree on fifty per cent or more of the art terms and their definitions and will present art-vocabulary objectives. The findings are that the formulators of three or more of the sources agree on less than fifty per cent of the art terms and their definitions. Two sources include definite art-vocabulary objectives. The conclusion is that all three hypotheses are rejected.

A comparative study of term creation processes in Isixhosa and Isizulu translations of the South African Constitution

MASTERS FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE STUDIES STUDENT NO: 0111542N / The study deals with term creation in translation comparing isiXhosa and isiZulu in relation to paraphrasing, borrowing, compounding, semantic transfer and derivation as five major processes used by translators in African Languages to compensate for terminology gap. The study is conducted within the Descriptive Translation Studies approach and it deals with how translator’s strategies are influenced by norms. The extracted source text terms in this study are from the English Constitution as the source text whilst the isiXhosa and isiZulu terms are extracted from the isiXhosa and isiZulu Constitutions respectively. The study has indicated that out of the five selected processes, paraphrasing is the most frequently chosen strategy in African Languages. With regard to borrowing, it has been shown that not all types of borrowing (as discussed by Cluver 1989) are possible in these languages and that every borrowed term has to be modified according to phonological, morphological and orthographical rules of these two languages. The study is concluded by arguing that term creation processes in translation are universal features of translated texts in African languages and they are effective translation strategies in languages of limited diffusion. In addition, translated texts are sources/ depositories of terminology and consequently they can play a role in language development activities.

Esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de propor a construção de um glossário bilíngue (inglêsportuguês) de colocações especializadas com a palavra acorde, relacionadas à área de Harmonia Musical. Ela se justifica pela falta de estudos terminológicos relacionados às colocações especializadas do campo da Teoria Musical. Os alicerces teóricos que sustentam a pesquisa são: os Estudos da Tradução Baseados em corpus, que vincula a metodologia da Linguística de Corpus (LC) aos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução; a Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia (TCT) que orienta a análise terminológica e a elaboração de glossários especializados; e a Fraseologia, que fornece respaldo à análise das colocações. Para este estudo foi construído um corpus comparável de textos escritos em Inglês (EUA) e Português (BR), com publicações ou reedições a partir de 1990, abrangendo os seguintes gêneros: instrucionais (livros-textos, apostilas) e acadêmico-científicos (artigos científicos, dissertações e teses). Os materiais, coletados de meio eletrônico e impresso, provém de sites de revistas especializadas, periódicos, congressos, conservatórios e faculdades de Música. A análise descritiva do corpus de estudo conta com a ajuda do software Wordsmith Tools (Scott, 2016) que gera listas de palavras-chave, colocados, clusters e concordâncias. A partir da análise das listas e comparação entre contextos nas duas línguas, foi elaborado um glossário, cujos verbetes estão organizados em ordem alfabética, com exemplos de uso retirados do corpus. O produto final tem, como público alvo, tradutores e músicos. / This research aims to propose the construction of a bilingual English-Portuguese glossary of specialized collocations related to the term chord from the area of Musical Harmony. The reason for this study is the lack of terminological researches about specialized collocations from Musical Theory. This research is based on the following theoretical foundations: Corpus-based Translation Studies that links the methodology of Corpus Linguistics (CL) to Descriptive Translation Studies; The Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT) which guides the terminological analysis and the elaboration of specialized glossaries; and Phraseology, which gives support to the analysis of collocations. A comparable corpus of texts written in English (USA) and Portuguese (BR) was compiled for this study. The texts published from 1990 are subdivided into two text genres: instructional texts (textbooks, study manuals) and scientific research (scientific articles, dissertations and theses). These materials, collected from electronic and print media, were obtained from the websites of specialized magazines, periodicals, conferences, conservatories and music colleges. The descriptive analysis of the study corpus was accomplished from the data provided by the software Wordsmith Tools (SCOTT, 2016) that generates wordlists, keywords, clusters and concordances. From the analysis of the lists and the comparison between contexts in both languages, we elaborated a glossary, whose entries are organized alphabetically, with examples of usage extracted from the corpus. The final product is intended to assist translators and musicians.

A tradução da culinária típica brasileira para o inglês: um estudo sob o enfoque da Linguística de Corpus / Typical Brazilian cooking translated into English: a corpus-based research

Apesar de a culinária ser tema constante de programas de TV, seções de jornais e revistas, livros de receitas e diversas outras publicações, ainda é pouco estudada no meio acadêmico. Normalmente desconsiderada como linguagem especializada, a área não é contemplada com grande oferta de materiais de referência, ainda mais escassos quando consideramos o par de línguas português-inglês. No que tange à culinária tipicamente brasileira, não há disponíveis no mercado materiais que abranjam termos e fraseologias que auxiliem tradutores e redatores da área na produção de textos em língua inglesa. Consequentemente, não raro essa tarefa resulta em equivalentes equivocados, falta de naturalidade e adaptações que acarretam a descaracterização de referências culturais. Com o objetivo de identificar os termos próprios da culinária brasileira que constituem as entradas do dicionário e equivalentes, definições, fraseologias e outras informações relevantes em língua inglesa, construímos um corpus de estudo a partir de livros de receitas, que foi investigado segundo os preceitos da Linguística de Corpus. Esse corpus é constituído por um subcorpus comparável e um paralelo. O primeiro é composto de onze livros escritos originalmente em português e em inglês, contabilizando aproximadamente 430.000 palavras em cada idioma. O subcorpus paralelo compreende seis dos onze livros escritos originalmente em português e suas respectivas traduções para a língua inglesa. Duas ferramentas computacionais foram utilizadas no processamento desse material: o WordSmith Tools 6.0 e o ParaConc. A partir das palavras-chave-chave simples e compostas em português palavras significativamente mais recorrentes em no mínimo dois dos onze livros , buscamos equivalentes no material em língua inglesa. Os resultados mostraram que nem sempre há correspondência entre o conteúdo selecionado para compor os livros de culinária brasileira escritos em português e em inglês. No material em português, observamos maior presença de receitas emblemáticas e ingredientes típicos de algumas regiões, ao passo que em inglês sobressaem pratos do dia a dia, comprovando que a divulgação da culinária brasileira pelo brasileiro está atrelada a questões nacionalistas de preservação de símbolos, diferente daquela propagada em língua inglesa, talvez mais baseada na observação dos hábitos alimentares brasileiros. Diante dessa discrepância, nem sempre foi possível identificar equivalentes e, consequentemente, fraseologias para as referências culturais brasileiras nas receitas escritas originalmente em inglês. Nesses casos, recorremos à versão em inglês do subcorpus paralelo. Verificamos, também, que os textos em português utilizam uma linguagem mais informal e menos detalhada, observada especialmente na seção da receita dedicada ao modo de preparo. Para a construção do dicionário, utilizamos o software TshwaneLex A metodologia se mostrou adequada para o levantamento da terminologia e de equivalentes da área, podendo, assim, ser aplicada a outras pesquisas que partam de dados empíricos. / The aim of this dissertation is to build the Portuguese-English Dictionary of Brazilian Cooking. Although cooking is a common theme of TV shows, newspaper and magazine sections, cookbooks and various publications, it has been underestimated by scholars. Usually disregarded as specialized language, it does not count with a large supply of reference materials. This is especially true when we consider the pair of languages Portuguese-English. Regarding the typical Brazilian cooking, works covering terms and phraseologies which could help translators and writers with the production of texts in the area are nonexistent. Consequently, the task results in problems such as the use of wrong equivalents, lack of fluency and adaptations that lead to mischaracterization of cultural references. In order to identify the terms which are characteristic of Brazilian cooking which constitute the dictionary entries and their equivalents, definitions, phraseologies and other relevant information in English, we built a corpus from cookbooks. This corpus, which consists of a comparable and a parallel subcorpus, was investigated with the methodology underlying Corpus Linguistics. The first comparable corpus comprises eleven books originally written in Portuguese and in English, accounting for about 430,000 words in each language. The parallel subcorpus is made up of six of the eleven books originally written in Portuguese and their translations into English. The data were drawn by two computational tools: WordSmith Tools 6.0 and ParaConc. From simple and complex key-keywords in Portuguese words which are significantly more reccurrent in at least two of the eleven books considered , we searched for equivalents in the English texts. Results showed differences between Brazilian cookbooks written in Portuguese vis-à-vis those written in English. Concerning the recipes written in Portuguese, we observed a higher presence of emblematic dishes and ingredients which are typical of some regions. On the other hand, day to day recipes stand out in the books written in English, confirming that Brazilians are more influenced by nationalist issues when choosing their characteristic dishes, whereas foreigners seem to base their choices on observation of eating habits. Due to this discrepancy, the English books at times failed to provide equivalents for some of the Brazilian cultural references. In such cases, we resorted to the English version of the parallel subcorpus. We also observed that the recipes in Portuguese use a more informal language and are less detailed, mainly when we analyze the section devoted to preparation. To build the dictionary we used the software TshwaneLex. The results showed that the methodology was useful for identifying terms, phraseologies and equivalents in a specialized area. This may motivate other researchers to attempt to use it in other studies which deal with empirical data.

Procura-se identificar, a partir do processo de documentação museográfica de uma coleção têxtil, mecanismos metodológicos da Ciência da Informação que auxiliem o trabalho de documentação, organização e disponibilização da informação em museus. Analisa-se a história das áreas, suas especificidades, seus princípios e metodologias de forma a identificar a possibilidade de suas interfaces prováveis. Dentre os vários aspectos da documentação museográfica, destacam-se as contribuições da Linguística Documentária em sua interface com a Terminologia, no que diz respeito à circunscrição dos termos que servem à denominação das peças analisadas. / The aim is try to identify methodological mechanisms of The Science of Information to assist the documentation, organization and provision of information job in museums, through the museographic process of documentation of collection textiles. It was analyzed the history of the areas, its specificities, principles and methodology to identify the possibility of its possible interfaces. Within some aspects of museographic documentation highlight the contributions of Linguistics Documentary in its interface with the Terminology with respect to the circumscription of terms that serve to name the parts analyzed.

Vocabulário da economia: formas de apresentação dos estrangeirismos / Economics vocabulary: how terms brought in from other languages

A Dissertação tem por objetivo analisar a maneira como os estrangeirismos, elementos exteriores ao léxico vernacular, são apresentados na língua portuguesa, na área específica da Economia. Em uma primeira parte do trabalho, desenvolvemos considerações de ordem teórica, referente à terminologia e à metalingugem. Tomando por objetivo da análise os termos constantes da Base de Termos da Economia, constituída no âmbito do Projeto Observatório de Neologismos do Português Brasileiro Contemporâneo (projeto TermNeo), verificamos que, estatisticamente, cerca de 8,4% dos termos se constituem em estrangeirismos Os estrangeirismos coletados foram posteriormente classificados de acordo com a tipologia de sua apresentação. Por meio de análise dos contextos em que ocorreram, os respectivos estrangeirismos foram classificados em duzentos e vinte e nove tipos de apresentação diferentes e, a seguir, agrupados em nove categorias. Procedemos à análise de algumas formas de apresentação, procurando distinguir as formas que implicavam a utilização de recursos gráficos ou de língua-objeto, bem como os de metaliguagem. Ao final, foram feitas considerações sobre a questão da metalinguagem. / The objective of the dissertation was to analyse how terms brought in from other languages are presented in Portuguese, specifically, in the area of Economics. In the first part of the dissertation we presented theoretical considerations on terminology and metalanguage. The terms analyzed were those included in the Base de Termos da Economia [Base of Economic Terms] drawn up as part of the project known as Observatório de Neologismos do Português Brasileiro Contemporâneo (Projeto TermNeo). We found that, statistically, approximately 8.4% of the entries consisted of foreign terms. The terms collected were later classified according to the typology of their presentation. Based on an analysis of the contexts where they occurred, the terms were classified into two hundred and twenty-nine different types of presentation and then grouped into nine categories. Several of the forms of presentation were analyzed in an attempt to distinguish those that imply the use of graphic resources or object-language, as well as those of metalanguage. At the end considerations were presented on the question of metalanguage.
