Gathering teachers’ ideas and beliefs about science and creating space for traditional knowledge in the science classroom

Kendy, Patricia Nan 05 June 2008 (has links)
This study examines science teachers' beliefs and ideas about science prior to and following a one and a half day workshop on Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Witsuwit'en knowledge of science. It is part of a wider study initiated by the Aboriginal Enhancements Branch of the BC Ministry of Education to determine why Aboriginal students are not enrolling in the sciences. A broad range of qualitative methodologies were applied, including pre and post instructional questionnaires, an experiential field trip to traditional Witsuwit'en territories as well as an instructional workshop and a dialogue process. Aspects of Indigenous methodology were included that were central to the lived experience of the Witsuwit'en people whose territories we were on and with whom the research was being conducted. Post-workshop questionnaire responses indicated that teachers' developed a broader understanding of Witsuwit'en Traditional Knowledge systems and a deeper respect for the contributions of the local First Nations to the sciences.

Firstly, it is a paradoxical scientific activity since the modern scientific discovery in ethnopharmacology is produced by a non-scientific knowledge. This controversial research strategy intends to produce a socially legitimized knowledge through a process of epistemic standardization. Secondly, although the use of traditional knowledge is a typical activity, to access it and to use it requires the signature of a contract for the equitable sharing of benefits as well as the signature of a term of prior consent access. These two juridical requirements are at the same time a new ethical parameter in scientific research and a barrier to the autonomy of the scientific field. Therefore, through the politic action scientists and researches seeks new social strategies to recovery the autonomy of the scientific field in ethnopharmacology and ethnobiology areas. Thus, this sociological research analyzes the internal conflicts between scientists in the scientific field through the examination of the social controversies in the use of two distinct research models, the vertical and the horizontal research models, as well as the examination of the external social disputes of the scientific activity, specially the politic action of scientists concerning to the autonomy question. In this research, the question of access, use and equitable sharing of benefits in R&D processes emerges as an interesting strategy used by scientists to legitimate the appropriation of the traditional knowledge. As non-knowledge, the traditional knowledge is transformed by the modern commercial science in generic information without significance. At the same time, this traditional generic information would be liable to be manipulated and appropriated by pharmaceutical multinationals trough the application of intellectual property rights. Finally, the appropriation of the traditional communities claim intends to legitimate socially the controversial scientific activity of ethnopharmacologists, ethnobiologists and pharmaceutical industries.

Towards effective Multilateral protection of traditional knowledge within the global intellectual property framework

Kuti, Temitope Babatunde January 2018 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM (Mercantile and Labour Law) / Traditional Knowledge (TK) has previously been considered a 'subject' in the public domain, unworthy of legal protection. However, the last few decades have witnessed increased discussions on the need to protect the knowledge of indigenous peoples for their economic sustenance, the conservation of biodiversity and modern scientific innovation. Questions remain as to how TK can best be protected through existing, adapted or sui generis legal frameworks. Based on an examination of the formal knowledge-protection mechanisms (i.e. the existing intellectual property system), this mini-thesis contends that these existing systems are inadequate for protecting TK. As a matter of fact, they serve as veritable platforms for incidences of biopiracy. It further argues that the many international initiatives designed to protect TK have so far failed owing to inherent shortcomings embedded in them. Furthermore, a comparative assessment of several national initiatives (in New Zealand, South Africa and Kenya) supports an understanding that several domestic efforts to protect TK have been rendered ineffective due to the insurmountable challenge of dealing with the international violations of local TK rights. It is therefore important that on-going international negotiations for the protection of TK, including the negotiations within the World Intellectual Property Organisation's Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC), do not adopt similar approaches to those employed in previous initiatives if TK must be efficiently and effectively protected. This mini-thesis concludes that indigenous peoples possess peculiar protection mechanisms for their TK within the ambit of their customary legal systems and that these indigenous mechanisms are the required anchors for effective global protections.

Geograficidade, percepção e saberes tradicionais dos pescadores do Lago Guaíba, Porto Alegre, R.S.

Silva, Tomás Rech da January 2007 (has links)
The perceptions and knowledge of traditional populations are conquering each increasingly space in academic and in government institutions. This valuation gains projection since these groups have crops most commonly integrated conservation and the places where they live than the urban-industrial society, and its practices serve as an example for the management and for environmental conservation. However , the valorization of these knowing is still budding about the conservation of natural areas, both in Brazil as in the world. The present studied, through the foundations of Cultural Geography, describes and interprets the geographical experiences and part of the environmental knowledge of the fishermen of Lake Guaíba, with regard to water quality, fish and environmental impacts in the wealth. As part of the results, we have a hierarchy of the main environmental impacts in the Lake, described by fishermen. In brief, the fishermen out as the main source of degrading the domestic sewage, followed by garbage supernatant, the action of ferries of extraction of sand (bot of sands), the contamination from industry, and in fifth and last place, the contamination by pesticides. The study also presents proposals for management on the part of fishermen and the search in order to enrich the process of managing their water, raising the knowledge of fishermen on the delta of the river Jacuí.

ABSTRACT Currently we have in the field scientific an important discussion about exposition of the biology contents as unique truths and with value of stability, to the detriment of the appreciation of other knowledge of the students, as the traditional knowledge, and the cultural diversity has been poorly considered in the pedagogical practice. The plants represent historical and natural patrimony of humanity and they have relation with the dynamics construction of the traditional cultures. They are part, therefore, of the relations society-nature and, obviously, is important that the scholar education is involved civic education of the students that prizes by social environmental responsibility with respect to forests. Although “Ilha de Maré” is part of the Salvador city, the culture and the habits of its residents are quite differentiated from that observed on the continent, presenting peculiar practices associated with the approximation and use of plants. Grounded in critical multiculturalism and in phenomenology, our research was compromised in the analysis of the context that involved the learning generated from a teaching sequence about plant propagation, constructed on a sociocultural perspective, through a partnership with the biology teacher in a class of 2nd year high school students in a public school in Salvador which receives students who live on the “Ilha de Maré”. From field studies in “Ilha de Maré” with residents and students about issues related to local plants, we obtained subsidy for construction and further development in the classroom of a teaching sequence, evaluated in a collaborative form based on the process and in the context of learning and the voices of the social actors involved. Because it is a situated and contextualized research, in which we constructed and evaluated the teaching sequence from the local culture, emphasizing the context in which the phenomena occur, it corresponds to a case study, of the qualitative approach. The development of didactic sequence pointed out some important aspects: a) the intercultural dialogue enabled the development of argumentative and critical skills and facilitating of the understanding of concepts about reproduction of angiosperms, with the expansion of knowledge of school science achieved, though not fully; b) the evaluative activities enable the learning process; c) the critical multicultural approach that we developed was not able to promote in all students the look about the possibilities of risk when using medicines and also teas, e d) some scientific terms were reported as difficult to understand due to the challenges of crossing borders. Include the elements of the teaching sequence that can be taken as reference for innovative and significant pedagogical practices: a) the critical multicultural approach; b) the forms of evaluation with creative skills requested; c) the use of other languages in the classroom and in the contextualized handout; d) the explicitness about historical aspects of construction of science and its nature; e) the valuation of both the sociocultural context and the speech of students in the dialogue process; f) the association between the reproduction of plants and ecological issues; g) the teaching from plants known to the students, and h) the care for the sociocultural approach of dialogue does not interfere with systematic and thorough discussion of scientific knowledge. Although of the teaching sequence developed to be an unfinished model, we suggest that this tool is adapted to other contexts, being the principles validated in this research - environmental, cultural and epistemological - recommended for the design of innovative teaching proposals.

Situating adscriptions of value on Nature's Contributions to People : The case of traditional farmers in San Pedro, Paraguay.

Barranco Blasco, Martín January 2018 (has links)
This thesis focus on the unidimensional adscriptions of value behind industrial soybeans production in Paraguay. The thesis aims to present non-economic Nature’s Contributions to traditional farmers’ quality of life, the role of farmers’ traditional knowledge to display these contributions and the efficiency of such knowledge regarding high productive demands. From a theoretical framework based on nature’s contributions to people, ecosystem services, knowledge systems and conservation, the thesis formulates the following research questions: 1) What drives the prioritization of a single economic value on nature’s contributions to people in rural Paraguay? 2) What is the value of non-economic nature’s contributions, and what is the role of traditional farmers on displaying these values? The study mostly relies in primary data obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted during fieldwork period in the study area of San Pedro, Eastern Paraguay. The results present a plural assessment on nature’s contributions and the adaptation of small farmers to modern farming techniques. The thesis concludes that a perspective dominated by unidimensional value can be socially motivated within the rush for development in Paraguay, a concept tied to economic growth and modernization. In addition, nature’s contributions displayed by small farmers suggest that community-based conservation could represent a more sustainable approach for the farmers’ needs and the current environmental challenges of the country.
