Not informed by the author

Lina Marcela Pedraza Torres 02 October 2017 (has links)
Social organization of the group is an important aspect involved in bullying, a frequent type of aggression found in schools. In this study, we present the correlation between bullying / victimization and variables of perceived popularity, social preference and social impact in a group of adolescents between 12 and 14 years old in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Bullying and Victimization were assessed through the Peer Assessment questionnaire and, Social Status and Perceived Popularity were assessed through two sociometric tests, each one with two questions. We used generalized linear model (GEE) to check the interaction between the variables. According to our results, the less liked the more victimized an adolescent will be, and the more popular the higher the chance of being aggressor. In addition, there is a direct correlation between aggressiveness and the social impact of each one (how much the person is remembered by the peers), and there is an inverse relationship between aggressiveness and social preference.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Julia Nunes de Souza Teixeira.pdf: 1102437 bytes, checksum: ba92bf6daf45c58fbe96e7ba4c524dab (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-10-26 / This dissertation is organized into two articles that aim to to understand psychopathic traits in sex offender against children and adolescents, as well as their relationship with the experience of victimization throughout life. The first article aims to systematically explore and synthesize the knowledge produced about the use of Psychopathy Checklist-Revised - PCLR in sex offender against children and adolescents. It was found a total of 19 articles through which it was possible to verify that PCL-R, in most cases, can be considered a useful and valid instrument to assess the psychopathy in SVA in the cultural contexts in which the instrument was applied, as well as as to predict criminal recidivism in this specific sample. The second article is an empirical study, whose main objective was to investigate the personality traits of SVA through PCL-R and the victimizations suffered by them through the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire - JVQ. Thirty SVA, male volunteers, serving a prison sentence in a state penitentiary in the state of Goiás, were divided into two groups: G1 AVS considered psychopathic (PCL-R≥30 points) and G2 (SVA (PCL-R <30) not considered psychopathics .The results indicated that 33.3% of the sample met the criteria for psychopathy (score> 30 in PCL-R). The results showed significant differences between groups: the younger the SVA, the greater the PCL-R score; the higher the PCL-R score, the greater the variety of crimes committed, the greater the number of victims, the more escapes and rebellions, the greater the number of cases responding and the longer the total time of punishment. The results also indicated a positive correlation between the PCL-R score and G1 malpractice, revealing that the higher the PCL-R score, the greater the number of victimizations suffered in the maltreatment screening.

Falk, Jens, Hautanen, Sofie January 2019 (has links)
The present study aimed to examine the relationship between internalizingand externalizing behaviors and criminal victimization. A quantitativeapproach was used and a web survey was sent out to a student population. Atotal of 267 respondents participated with an age range between 18 and 42years (M = 23.06; SD = 3.80). A logistic regression was used to investigatethe relationship between externalizing and internalizing behaviors andvictimization of crime while controlling independently for each of the twobehaviors. The results showed that externalizing behavior was significant, while controlling for internalizing behavior, with an odds ratio of 1.03. Thus, for each increased value on the externalizing scale a participant was 1.03times more likely to have responded that they had been exposed to a crime. The results were also significant between externalizing behavior and criminalvictimization for men, but not for women; and significant betweeninternalizing behavior and criminal victimization for women but not for men. These results highlights the association between internalizing andexternalizing behaviors and criminal victimization. The authors argue thatthese results should be used in future crime prevention strategies to prioritizewhere resources should be placed on the basis of gender and type of behavior,in order to achieve effective intervention outcomes.

The Prevalence and Predictive Nature of Victimization, Substance Abuse and Mental Health on Recidivism: A Comparative Longitudinal Examination of Male and Female Oregon Department of Corrections Inmates

Papadopulos, Anastacia Konstantinos 01 January 2011 (has links)
As a consequence of increased awareness and the current scholarly debate regarding women's differential predictors of recidivism, criminal justice agencies are working with researchers in the field to expand their knowledge in this area. In 2007, Portland State University researchers in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Corrections conducted an investigation of factors emerging in the pathways and gender responsive literature as predictive of women's recidivism in a randomly selected sample of female (n=150) and male (n=150) inmates. This study used information gathered from that investigation for two purposes: (1) to assess the prevalence rates of victimization experiences (childhood, adolescent and adulthood), substance abuse and mental health diagnosis across male and female ODOC inmates, and (2) to assess the predictive nature of victimization experiences, substance abuse and mental health diagnoses on recidivism across gender after a three year period. Findings suggest that females suffered from higher rates of victimization experiences throughout their lifetime than male ODOC inmates and higher rates of DSM-IV-TR mood and anxiety diagnosis. Similar rates were found across gender when assessing substance abuse and diagnosis of co-occurring disorders. When assessing the predictive impact of victimization, substance abuse and mental health diagnosis on recidivism this study found support for both gender neutral and gender responsive perspectives.

Perceptions, Lived-Experiences, and Environmental Factors Impacting the Crime-Reporting Practices of Private College Students

Arney, Kelly Lynn 01 January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was assessing the perceptions of student's on how the campus climate impacts their likelihood of reporting crime. Victimization studies have been conducted at large universities and community colleges; however, there remains a lack of research regarding private colleges. This study was designed to examine the reasoning behind students' crime-reporting behaviors and the influencers that impact their decisions. Cohen and Felson's routine activity theory along with the collective-efficacy theory were used as frameworks to analyze the crimes that occur to college students as well as to explore the reasons for not reporting some crimes to law enforcement. This research utilized archival data from a private (not-for-profit) college in the Midwest United States. The data were analyzed through coding and thematic development, supported by secondary coding review and member checks. Concepts explored through this study included examining students' perceptions on their likelihood of reporting crime and victimization as well as students' feelings of safety while at college. Results showed that students voiced consistent beliefs that their peers were likely to report crime and several factors influenced the reporting of crimes or victimization by students. Findings also showed that students felt generally safe while attending college but expressed a need for improved safety systems on the campus. These findings draw no definitive conclusions about why students choose to not report crime but do promote social change by helping administrators develop policies that collaboratively engage students, law enforcement, and campus officials with crime reporting and education programs to reduce the underreporting of crime and victimization.

Predicting Bullying Among High School Students Using Individual and School Factors: Analysis of a National Survey

Bohn, Chad M. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Being bullied has been recognized as a problem within the U.S. school systems. Individuals who have been bullied physically, verbally, relationally, or electronically typically suffer from mental health problems as a result. As it has been shown that males are more at risk for being bullied, it is important to understand what variables can predict males being bullied in order to design appropriate preventions and interventions to curb bullying in the schools. Four forms of school bullying behaviors among U.S. adolescent males and their association with type of bullying, school environment, and school performance and engagement variables were examined. Data were examined from the National Crime Victimization Survey School Crime Supplement. A sample of 1,636 males ages 14 to 18 was used from the survey. A series of logistic regression analyses were performed for each type of bullying (physical, verbal, relational, and cyber) and school environment (presence of gangs, guns, graffiti, drugs, and number of school safety measures in place) and school performance and engagement predictors (grades, extracurricular activity engagement, truancy, and number of fights). Linear regression analyses were also used to look at all the predictor variables and the frequency of each type of bullying. Results: The R2 values for the logistic regression analyses were quite small. However, trends could be observed from the odds ratios showing that fighting, drug availability, and graffiti were predictive of all four forms of bullying. The linear regression analyses also produced small R2 values. Effect plots were created to identify which significant variables had a greater effect on the frequency of being bullied. Conclusion: Schools should focus on removing graffiti and drugs from the schools. Prevention work should be used to help students find alternative ways to deal with problems other than resorting to fighting. Problems with reliability and validity of the survey are also discussed.

Att motverka mobbning : en skolas förebyggande arbete

Hillberg, Helena, Forslund Larsson, Mona January 2008 (has links)

The Role Of Locus Of Control, Self-esteem, Parenting Style, Loneliness, And Academic Achievement In Predicting Bullying Among Middle School Students

Atik, Gokhan 01 August 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study aimed at determining the prevalence rate of bullying and victimization among middle school students and investigating the role of locus of control, self-esteem, parenting style, loneliness, and academic achievement in predicting participation in bullying and victimization. The sample consisted of 742 participants recruited from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Results revealed that of the total 742 students: 4.6 % of the students were bullies, 21.3 % were victims, 6.5 % were bully/victims, 44.7% were pure not involved and 22.9 % were not involved. Regarding the types of bullying, the most common bullying behavior used by the bullies and experienced by the victims was verbal bullying. When gender and grade level were investigated in relation to bullying, meaningful gender differences were found. However, no significant grade level differences were found. The binary logistic regression analysis indicated that / female students who involved in bullying had low acceptance/involvement and academic achievement scores, but higher loneliness and psychological autonomy scores. Furthermore, male involved students had external locus of control, higher self-esteem, and loneliness scores, and lower strictness/supervision scores. Logistic regression analysis also revealed external locus of control and higher loneliness scores / but lower acceptance/involvement and academic achievement scores among the victim group.

Glossed lips and glossed over : relational aggression in adolescent girls

Salas-Tull, Tamara Jean 25 July 2011 (has links)
Relational aggression is an indirect type of aggression used to damage relationships with others. Adolescent girls frequently encounter this issue, and the ubiquity of technology has expanded the ways in which girls can attack one another, i.e. cyber-bullying. The causes of relational aggression are unknown and could involve a combination of factors, including victim and/or bully psycho-social adjustment, social expectations, or the implicit structure of female friendships in adolescence. The effects range from social anxiety to impacted school performance to depression and suicidality. Groups of friends act much like a family for adolescents in terms of support and intimacy. Using Murray Bowen’s family systems theory as a template, an intervention is proposed where girls are taught techniques that will strengthen relationships with others and themselves. / text
