[en] LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION IN WITTGENSTEIN AND HABERMAS / [pt] LINGUAGEM E COMUNICAÇÃO EM WITTGENSTEIN E HABERMASNILSON ASSUNCAO ALVARENGA 28 November 2003 (has links)
[pt] O trabalho tematiza as concepções de linguagem e
comunicação em Wittgenstein e Habermas. A base de
comparação são as diferentes atitudes metodológicas
adotadas pelos dois autores. O objetivo é mostrar como
essas diferentes orientações levam a diferentes concepções
de linguagem e comunicação. A pragmática formal e a teoria
[en] The subject of this work is the conceptions of language and
communication in Wittgenstein and Habermas. The starting-
point of the comparison is the different methodological
attitudes adopted by both authors. The objective is to
show how these different orientations lead to different
conceptions of language and communication. Habermas s
formal pragmatics and pragmatical theory of
truth are planned as methodological solution to the problem
of a pragmatically oriented analysis of language, which
does not give up a theoretical explanation of
the constitution of the linguistic meaning. This work
intends to show, however, that Habermas s conceptions do
not allow us to work with the problems faced by
Wittgenstein in his rule-following considerations, in an
attitude strictly antitheoretical.
From the Wittgensteinian remarks can be extracted a notion
of communication basically different from the reflexive
communication by which Habermas is guided. On the other
hand, it is considered the philosophical sense of
a strictly pragmatical analysis of language, as we can find
in the work of the later Wittgenstein. How can one
legitimate in practice an analysis of language turned to
the expliciteness of pragmatic presssupositions without any
type of theoretical foundation?

[en] THE PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS OF WITTGENSTEIN S MATHEMATICAL CONSTRUCTIVISM / [pt] AS BASES FILOSÓFICAS DO CONSTRUTIVISMO MATEMÁTICO DE WITTGENSTEINANDRE DA SILVA PORTO 04 April 2005 (has links)
algum
nível de detalhamento as interpretações propostas por
Wittgenstein de
alguns tipos de proposições matemáticas elementares,
especialmente
proposições aritméticas. / [en] This thesis deals with the philosophical basis behind
Wittgenstein s proposals in the philosophy of mathematics.
We try to
show that there is a semantic core from which these
proposals are
derived: the idea that the meaning of a sentence should be
taken to be its
truth conditions. We sort out this insight from its
inception in Frege
through the Tractatus all the way to the last phase of
Wittgenstein s
thought. In our last two chapters we discuss the changes
this approach
went through in this last phase of the philosopher s
thought in relation to
the idea of triangularization of the underlying semantics.
We then deal
in some detail with Wittgenstein s proposed interpretation
of some types
of elementary mathematical propositions, especially
arithmetical
propositions.

[en] ON THE STATUTE OF PROPER NAMES IN THE POETICAL PHILOSOPHY OF LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN AND IN THE PHILOSOPHICAL POETRY OF SAMUEL BECKETT / [pt] SOBRE O ESTATUTO DOS NOMES PRÓPRIOS NA FILOSOFIA POÉTICA DE LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN E NA POESIA FILOSÓFICA DE SAMUEL BECKETTSILVIA TEIXEIRA BARROSO REBELLO 19 October 2012 (has links)
A recorrente
A escolha
tal. / [en] This work focuses on the statute of metalinguistic terms, with special
interest in proper names. As perceived by common sense, this class of words is
particularly useful to reinforce a representationistic view of language: here the
name, there the named. The contemporary and recurring evidence of failure of this
representationistic view invites to alternative reflections on the metalinguistic
vocabulary and especially on proper names because the attempts to bring a new
insight on the understanding of linguistic significance collide with the persistence
of a vocabulary marked by a long hegemony of that language comprehension.
The argument proposed here is developed from the writings of Ludwig
Wittgenstein and Samuel Beckett, especially focusing on the texts of the second
Wittengstein and in four Beckett’s novels: Watt, Molloy, Malone Dies and The
Unnamable. The choice of these authors and texts has to do with the
contemporary richness of approaches between philosophy and literature and also
with the special attention both authors dedicated to the question of proper names.
It examines a set of relevant texts of Wittgenstein’s mature writings and agrees
with his words in Culture and Value (1989, p. 24): philosophy ought really to be
written only as a form of poetry. On the other hand, from Beckett’s novels this
work focuses both the unique onomastic challenges and metalinguistic moments
in which characters explicitly deal with the issue of proper names. It is
demonstrated that the writings of these two authors, taken as countersigns
showing at the same time the wandering of proper names and their paradoxical
conservativeness, beckon with the promise of ways to reduce the gap that still
seems to separate intellectual understandings of language as a praxis without
basis and its effective experience as such.

[en] METAPHORS FOR LANGUAGE IN SAUSSURE`S COURSE / [pt] METÁFORAS PARA LINGUAGEM NO CURSO DE SAUSSUREELISANGELA NOGUEIRA TEIXEIRA 03 December 2003 (has links)
[pt] Esta dissertação analisa metáforas para linguagem
encontradas no Curso de Lingüística Geral, de Ferdinand de
Saussure.
[en] This study analyses metaphors for language in Saussures
Course in General Linguistics. The analysis is based on the
Cognitive Theory of Metaphor, and on Roy Harriss classical
reading of the Course. The presence of a tension between
two divergent views on language and meaning is
demonstrated, where a traditional representationalist
perspective is shown to coexist with an opposing
view, similar to the one found in L. Wittgensteins
Philosophical Investigations.

[en] ON THE LIMITS OF INTERPRETATION UNDER A WITTGENSTEINIAN VIEW OF LANGUAGE / [pt] SOBRE OS LIMITES DA INTERPRETAÇÃO EM UMA PERSPECTIVA WITTGENSTEINIANA DE LINGUAGEMANA PAULA GRILLO EL JAICK 21 July 2005 (has links)
[pt] Ao negar que o significado seja imanente à letra e
enfatizar a multiplicidade
No debate motivado
infinito? Autorizam a validade de qualquer interpretação?
A interpretação é a
desenvolveu explicitamente sobre o tema da interpretação;
a desconstrução. / [en] Denying the immanence of meaning and emphasizing the
inexhaustible
multiplicity of interpretations that each text can
accommodate, some
distinguished supporters of non-representationalist
approaches to language
have recently been manifesting concern as to the limits of
interpretation.
The debate motivated by this concern raises such questions
as: In what sense
can one say today that certain interpretations are not
admissible? Do
non-representationalist approaches necessarily lead
interpretation to an
infinite regress? Do they give license to any
interpretation? Is
interpretation the replacement of one linguistic sign with
another? Is it
always necessary? Does it have an end? The major aim of
this dissertation is
to show how L. Wittgenstein's view of language can throw a
light on the
issue of the limits of interpretation. Aspects of
Wittgenstein's view of
language that are relevant to the topic are identified;
some of his explicit
reflections on interpretation are analyzed; and a
comparison is established
between his view and a contemporary approach that is often
criticized for
encouraging excessive flexibility in interpretation,
namely deconstruction.

[en] THE END OF EXPLANATIONS: HOW IS A RULE LINKED WITH ITS APPLICATIONS: THE PROBLEM OF INFINITE DETERMINATION IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE SECOND WITTGENSTEIN / [pt] O FIM DAS EXPLICAÇÕES: COMO UMA REGRA SE LIGA COM SUAS APLICAÇÕES: O PROBLEMA DA DETERMINAÇÃO INFINITA NA FILOSOFIA DO SEGUNDO WITTGENSTEINCAMILA APARECIDA RODRIGUES JOURDAN 21 July 2005 (has links)
[pt] A dissertação relaciona as considerações sobre seguir
regras com as críticas ao
tratamento extensional do infinito como uma totalidade
atual no segundo Wittgenstein.
A partir disso,
No
segundo capítulo, a antinomia
No
terceiro capítulo, a associação
No
univocidade do significado. Ao invés de classes ou
elementos primariamente
teríamos antes a própria relação
circularidade. / [en] The dissertation relates second Wittgenstein s considerations on following rules with his criticism about the extensional treatment of the infinite as actual totality. In the first chapter, a presentation of Wittgenstein s criticism of the mentalist solution pattern for the determination of the meaning is followed by an
account of what is taken to be the heart of the Private Language Argument. On that basis, it is argued that the communitarianist solution, formulated in terms of the confirmation of an independent pattern, cannot be consistently attributed to Wittgenstein. In the second chapter, the historical antinomy between the infinite as potential and the infinite as actual is introduced. Some aspects of Cantor s and Dedekind s
approaches, as well as Wittgenstein s criticism of those, are also presented. In the third chapter, the connection between Wittgenstein s criticism of the treatment of the infinite as extensional actuality
and the question of linguistic generality is explored, and the normative character attributed by Wittgenstein to mathematical propositions is highlighted. It is shown that, according to Wittgenstein, the conceptual difference between finite and infinite expresses the difference between empirical and grammatical
contexts. The infinite as expression of generality could not be treated as susceptible to extensional description without bringing about confusion, and it should, therefore, be thought of solely in a normative context, as a rule. The problem of the determination of a rule is thus retaken in the context of the discussion on mathematical proof, and the notion of surveyability is analysed. In the fourth chapter, the notion of family resemblances is considered. The central aspects of Wittgenstein s approach to the problem of the determination of a rule - the abandonment of extensionality and the univocality of meaning - are emphasised. Instead of classes or elements primarily determining the relationship among the instances of a
rule, the relationship itself would constitute such instances, and such internal relationship would be established by linguistic usage itself. Finally, in the conclusion, a general reconsideration of what was discussed is carried out, starting from the relationships between circularity and generality.

[en] This work reflects on the commensurability between the Chomskyan and the Wittgenstenian perspectives of language in general, and in particular it deals with issues on meaning. The goal of the research was to examine, in the mature texts of Wittgenstein, in the most recent developments of Chomsky — taking into consideration the successive changes in generative theory — and in the works of other authors that align themselves with the ideas of one or the other or devote themselves to study them, convergences and divergences relevant to them. The research adopted a pragmatic and anti-essentialist approach to language, more specifically the version of this approach offered by Wittgenstein s more mature philosophy, mostly in his Philosophical Investigations. Without renouncing this approach, the theories of human language supported by Noam Chomsky were analyzed, which are generally considered as opposed to those of the Viennese philosopher, starting from the hypothesis that it is possible to find, in the dialog between them, possible complementarities for a better understanding of how human language works. The present work are guided by following thesis: (1) Chomsky s and Wittgenstein s points of view about language are not completely irreconcilable and there can be convergences, divergences and possible complementarities that are worth exploring; (2) the contemporary versions of Chomsky s theories can be more open to a rapprochement with Wittgenstein than past versions; (3) some contradictions between the analysis of Chomsky and Wittgenstein can be attributed to the difference between the points of view and methods of a philosopher and those language of a scientist, or to conceptual confusions originated in the tricks of language itself – terms used by them or by their more outstanding commentators in ways that seem highly contradictory, leading us to the conclusion that there is an insurmountable incompatibility between their points of view; (4) at least partially, some of those contradictions can be attributed to the conflict between the Chomskyan hypothesis about the Autonomy of Syntax and the almost exclusive preoccupation of Wittgenstein for the meaning. Among other relevant aspects of the ideas of both authors, we will analyze how they use terms like representation, mind, description and explanation; fundamental questions for both, like their ideas about what it is to learn a language and follow a rule, and about distinctive notions of their thought, like the Wittgenstenian notion of form of life and the Chomskyan innate hypothesis. Finally, we analyze in deep two explicit disputes between Chomsky and Wittgenstein, taking as a starting point two texts of the former that formulate detailed criticism to important aspects of the latter s philosophy: the argument of private language and the criticism of the idea that there are brain processes correlated to thought.
