[en] REAL OPTIONS ANALYSIS OF STEEL SECTOR PROJECTS: THE BRAZILIAN CASE / [pt] OPÇÕES REAIS NA SIDERURGIA: O CASO BRASILEIROLUIZ DE MAGALHAES OZORIO 27 January 2011 (has links)
A presença
[en] This work analyzes the applicability of the real options method in the
valuation of investments in steel industry, and compares the outcomes with the
traditional methods of project evaluation. Being steel a commodity with high price
volatility and great changeability in its demand, the return of steel projects are
stochastic. The presence of these uncertainties, combined with the existing set of
managerial flexibilities in the steel productive processes, create an adequate
environment to emerge valuable real options that consequently may interfere
significantly with the project values and the decision making process in the steel
industry investments. Besides contemplating the recognition of the main existing
real options in the steel sector and prescribing methodologies to evaluate them, the
work analyzes stochastic methods that show the best fit to steel price performance,
considering the available empirical data existing in the market. As application of
the discussed methodologies in the course of the thesis the evaluation of two
diferent kinds of real options in the steel industry are presented - shut down
options in electrical furnace plants and switch of product in integrated plants -
using three different types of sthocastic processes: GBM, MRM and MRM with
Drift. The obtained results showed that the evaluated managerial flexibilities can
agregate significantily the created value in steel projects and it also may be
observed the relevance of the choice of stochastic process not only in the projects
value but in the options value as well.

[en] VOLTAGE STABILITY PROBABILISTIC ASSESSMENT IN COMPOSITE GENERATION AND TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS / [pt] ANÁLISE PROBABILÍSTICA DA ESTABILIDADE DE TENSÃO EM SISTEMAS COMPOSTOS DE GERAÇÃO E TRANSMISSÃOANSELMO BARBOSA RODRIGUES 08 January 2010 (has links)
Desta forma, a análise
Geralmente, a
O principal
A identificação
[en] In some countries, the electric power systems are operating near to their limits due to
the absence of investments in the transmission network expansion and natural growth of the
electricity demand. This operation condition can also occur in electric power systems in
which the transmission expansion is carried out in appropriate way. In this case, the excessive
loading of the transmission network is usually originated by the loss of interconnections that
transport large energy blocks. The two operation scenarios described above have caused
Voltage Stability problems in the electric power systems. The voltage instability states are
mainly characterized by the presence of two mechanisms: the unsolvability of the power flow
equations and the controllability loss. The disturbances that originate these two mechanisms
are of stochastic nature. Consequently, the voltage instability indices, used to analyze the
unsolvability and controllability loss, are random variables. In this way, the voltage stability
assessment would recognize the uncertainties associated with the parameters of the electric
network, for example: load fluctuations and equipment availability. Generally, the
uncertainties modeling in the voltage stability is carried out using the following probabilistic
methods: the Monte Carlo Simulation and the State Enumeration. The main index estimated
by these methods is the voltage instability risk. However, the voltage instability risk
evaluation is usually carried out considering only one of the mechanisms that cause voltage
instability scenarios. Furthermore, the severity of the unstable states has not been properly
investigated. The aim of this thesis is to develop a method to carry out a probabilistic
assessment of the voltage stability that take into account the two mechanisms that cause the
voltage instability in the evaluation of its risk. Probabilistic indices, based on Well-Being
Analysis, are also proposed to express the severity of the voltage instability states. The
proposed method is based on the combination of the following techniques: State Enumeration
Method, Monte Carlo Simulation, D’ Matrix Method and Nonlinear Optimal Power Flow.
The State Enumeration and Monte Carlo Simulation Methods are used to select the system
states resulting of equipment failures and load forecast errors. The identification of the
controllability loss and the solvability restoration of the power flow equations for the selected
states are carried out by the D’ Matrix Method and by the Nonlinear Optimal Power Flow,
respectively. The combination of the methods cited above was used to obtain the following
probabilistic indices: voltage instability risk, expected value of the voltage instability margin
for the buses, and Well-Being states probabilities. The results of the tests with the proposed
method revealed that the probabilities of unstable states, associated with the two voltage
instability mechanism, are very significant. Additionally, the Well-Being Analysis was able
to identify the root cause and the severity of the voltage instability problems.

[en] VALUATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS: A REAL OPTIONS PERSPECTIVE / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE INVESTIMENTOS EM TECNOLOGIA DA INFORMAÇÃO: UMA PERSPECTIVA DE OPÇÕES REAISANDRE FICHEL NASCIMENTO 27 June 2005 (has links)
outro lado, a aplicação do
No presente trabalho,
analisados e utilizados
para resolver os exemplos. / [en] Based on the growth of the technological industry s share
of the economy
during the last decade, the valuation of information
technology (IT) investments
has recently been receiving more and more attention.
However, due to the
dynamic and uncertain features of IT projects, traditional
capital budgeting
techniques do not apply to this type of investment. On the
other hand, putting in
practice real option valuation enables quantification of
the value generated by
investments with similar characteristics of IT
investments. This study does just
that, by applying the real options theory to value
information technology
investments. In order to achieve this, a couple of models
based on real options and
applied to IT investment valuation were considered. The
approach takes into
account uncertainty in costs and benefits to be generated,
as well as the possible
occurrence of catastrophic events, which could put an end
to the project. In the
current work, the model presented can be used to value
resource and development
projects as well as IT acquisition and development
projects. Special attention has
been given to the numerical solution of the models, where
numerical methods
based on Monte Carlo simulation were first analyzed and
then used to solve the
examples.

[en] THE OPTION VALUE OF THE FLEX-FUEL CAR IN DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF BRAZIL: APPLICATION OF REAL OPTIONS THEORY WITH MRM / [pt] O VALOR DA OPÇÃO DO CARRO FLEX POR REGIÃO GEOGRÁFICA DO BRASIL: UMA APLICAÇÃO DO TOR COM MRMCAROLINA CALDAS DO NASCIMENTO 13 August 2012 (has links)
as cinco regiões geográficas do Brasil: Nordeste, Norte, Centro-Oeste, Sudeste e
Sul.
automóvel do consumidor dessas regiões.
[en] The introduction of the Flex-fuel car to the Brazilian market in 2003
changed the way of decision of the customers. If before it was necessary to choose
the fuel by the kind of vehicle, fueled only by gas or only by sugarcane ethanol,
today it is possible to choose one kind of car with two fuel possibilities. The Flexfuel
car can run with gas, sugarcane ethanol or any mix of those fuels at any
proportion. This resulting flexibility generates an economic advantage for the
car’s owners, but what are the finance benefits of having a Flex-fuel car in
comparison to a gas-powered car? Where is geographically located the owner
which benefits more from this flexibility? This study applies the Real Option
method to analyze the option value of the Flex-fuel cars in each of the five
geographic regions of Brazil: Northeast, North, Central-West, Southeast and
South. It regards regional prices differences and their customer’s car preference.
For this purpose, it considers that the historical fuel prices are stochastic and
follow the Arithmetic Mean Reverting diffusion process. Monte Carlo Simulation
provides the forecasted fuel prices and option values. The results show that the
option to choose the cheapest fuel at the refueling moment adds significant value
for the owner of all the regions and car models considered. The Southeast region
is the most benefited from it.

[en] DETERMINATION OF THE VALUE OF REAL OPTIONS FOR MONTE CARLO SIMULATION WHIT APPROACH FOR FUZZY NUMBERS AND GENETIC ALGORITHMS / [pt] DETERMINAÇÃO DO VALOR DE OPÇÕES REAIS POR SIMULAÇÃO MONTE CARLO COM APROXIMAÇÃO POR NÚMEROS FUZZY E ALGORITMOS GENÉTICOSJUAN GUILLERMO LAZO LAZO 25 October 2004 (has links)
[pt] As decisões econômicas de investimento, assim como as
avaliações
econômicas de projetos, são afetadas por incertezas
econômicas, incertezas
técnicas e por flexibilidades gerenciais embutidas em
projetos. Flexibilidades
flexibilidade
incertezas e a simulação Monte
consideradas.
computacional.
modela, reduz significativamente o tempo computacional.
Além disso, a
[en] The economic decision on investment and evaluation of
projects are affected
by economic and technical uncertainties and by management
flexibilities inserted
on projects. These management flexibilities give the
manager freedom to take
decisions, such as to invest, to expand, to temporarily
stop or to abandon a
Project. These flexibilities have value and only can be
evaluated thhrogh real
option theory.
The use of real options considers uncertainties and
management flexibilities
with the objective of maximizing the value of the
investment opportunity.
To determine the value of the real option, models of
binomials tree, finite
differences or Monte Carlo simulation techniques are
normally used. However,
the traditional methods of binomials tree and finite
differences are impracticable
in the evaluation of options with more than three
uncertainties, while the Monte
Carlo simulation presents a high computational cost due to
the iterative process of
the stochastic simulation in sampling each variable.
The objective of this work is to investigate a
computational methodology
that can be used to determine the value of real option
under diverse uncertainties,
both of technical and market types. Therefore, this work
investigates methods that
can reduce computational time and thus create means for
taking decisions. For this
purpose, the union of several techniques is proposed: fuzzy
numbers to represent
some types of uncertainties of which an adequate stochastic
process is unknown,
stochastic process to represent other uncertainties and the
Monte Carlo simulation
to obtain a good approximation of the value of real
options. Moreover, a genetic
algorithm, together with Monte Carlo simulation, is used to
approximate an
optimum decision rule and to determine the value the real
option when several
investment options are available in a project. The rule
helps decide whether to
make an immediate investment in an option or to wait for
better conditions; this is
dependent on the state of the uncertainties considerated.
The proposed model was evaluated in problems of options of
expansion and of investment in information, applied in the
area of oil exploration and production.
Results obtained were similar to those achieved by
conventional techniques, with
a substantial reduction in computational time.
The main contribution of this work is the conception of a
new methodology
for the determination of the value of real options with
technical and market
uncertainties. This methodology has shown to be advantages
in relation to
conventional methods.
Results show that the use of fuzzy numbers to represent
uncertainties of
which the stochastic process that shapes them is unknown
reduces the
computational time significantly. Moreover, the methodology
demonstrates that
the genetic algorithm is an adequate technique for
approximating a decision rule
when many investment options are considered.

[en] ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF THE USE OF TELEVISION MARKETING CAMPAIGNS ON SUPERMARKET SALES / [pt] RADIÓLISE DA ALANINA POR ELÉTRONS DE 100 A 1000 EV ANALISADA POR ESPECTROSCOPIA NO INFRAVERMELHOMATHEUS SEIXAS RODRIGUES 07 March 2022 (has links)
(1,76).
[en] Organic compounds observed in interplanetary space bodies are of
particular relevance for revealing the physical-chemical processes that may
be related to life s origin. Amino acids, such as alanine, are supposed to
have played a crucial role in this process since they are basic components of
proteins, essential constituents of all living organisms. Information about
their radioresistance is essential for the development of models on how
prebiotics molecules are formed or resist travelling in the Solar System and
beyond; in particular the destruction cross-section by electron impact needs
to be known and the radiolysis process needs to be understood.
The current study aims to determine the dependence of alanine destruction
cross-section on electron beam impact with energies in the range of 100
eV - 1 keV for thickness targets range of 10 nm - 1000 nm. The sample s
degradation by the electron beam was monitored by infrared spectroscopy
(FTIR). Moreover, simulations performed by Monte Carlo method for
alanine irradiation with electron beam energies from 250 eV up to 5 keV
are presented.
It is inferred by the CASINO simulations, that the considered parameters
vary as a function of E(1.7). Experimental results indicate that the effective
destruction cross section decreases exponentially with the sample s thickness
until it reaches a saturation level. The effective destruction cross section
increases with incident energy according to the power law of E
(1.76). The bands A-values were determined by infrared spectroscopy method and
are in the order of 10(-18) cm(2)/molec. A moderate qualitative agreement was found between modeling results and
the experimental data. It is concluded that it will be significantly improved
if the sputtering process is added to the analyzed radiolysis.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DOS IMPACTOS DA SAZONALIDADE NA PRECISÃO DE EQUIVALENTES ESTÁTICOS DE REDE VIA FLUXO DE POTÊNCIA PROBABILÍSTICO / [en] EVALUATION OF THE IMPACTS OF SEASONALITY ON THE ACCURACY OF STATIC NETWORK EQUIVALENTS VIA PROBABILISTIC POWER FLOWPATRICIA DUARTE DE FARIA 24 January 2024 (has links)
[en] The seasonality of energy generation sources impacts the operation and planning stages of the electricity sector, as they cause variations in the generation profile throughout the year. Different types of plants, such as hydraulic, wind, and biomass thermal plants, have their availability impacted due to the rainfall regime, the intensity of the winds, or the harvest periods, respectively. In this dissertation, a study is conducted on the impact of hydrological seasonality on the accuracy of network equivalents through probabilistic power flow via Monte Carlo simulation. Reduced networks are widely used in planning studies to operate and expand the electrical system. One of the advantages of its adoption is the possibility of performing a high number of simulations with less computational demand. The precision of the equivalents in this dissertation is quantified, considering the uncertainties in demand, variation of the generation profile, and the occurrence of contingencies of transmission elements. Three network reduction methods are considered in two simulation environments: chronological and non-chronological. The first is to analyze the impact of using an equivalent obtained from the typical configuration of a specific month in the other months of the year. The second aims to compare the different network reduction methodologies in the face of variations in the reduction point, such as transmission contingencies. The studies are carried out with the IEEE 24 bus and IEEE 118 bus systems. The equivalents are created with the Organon software and evaluated in MATLAB. The simulation results are widely discussed, highlighting the importance of using the reduced network to guarantee consistent results.

[en] REAL OPTION THEORY: AN APPROACH TO WIND POWER / [pt] TEORIA DAS OPÇÕES REAIS: UMA ABORDAGEM EM ENERGIA EÓLICACAROLINE DA SILVA PANTOJA 25 April 2014 (has links)
[pt] O Setor Elétrico Brasileiro (SEB) vem passando por diversas mudanças. A
concessões do setor.
A matriz elétrica
flexibilidade. / [en] The Brazilian Electric Power Industry (SEB) has been going through many
changes. The reform begun in 1993 resulted in a modification on characteristics of
this sector that was mainly controlled by the government until that time. The
changes in SEB occurred in 2003 and 2004 resulted in the creation of the
Regulated Contracting Environment (ACR) and the Free Contracting
Environment (ACL). Recently, new modifications happened in this sector with the
law number 12.783/13, which regulates the Renovation of Concessions in the
sector. In this context, it can be highlighted the wind power projects and their
increasing participation in Brazilian electricity generation matrix. The Brazilian
electricity generation matrix is still concentrated in hydroelectrical generation.
However, wind power plants have been standing out in the last auctions, with
more competitive prices than Small Hydro Power (PCH) and biomass projects.
Therefore, considering the increasing importance of wind power source, this work
proposes the application of an investment model under uncertainty for evaluating
a wind power plant using the Real Option Theory. The flexibility used in this
work refers to the choice of the mechanism for selling the generated energy. In
this sense, it was assumed that the amount of generated energy which wouldn’t be
contracted in the ACR could have the possibility of being negotiated in contracts
in the ACL or it would be sold in the short-term market through the Differences
Settlement Price (PLD). Results indicate an increase in the project value with the
inclusion of this flexibility.

[en] The purpose of this study is to identify the best timing for private firms to go public. Private firms possess an option to go public at the time their managers believe it would be a valuable strategy. In the same way, exchange traded companies also have the option of issuing more equities or even taking them over. In this sense, the theory of real options can be applied in order to value management flexibility in an uncertain and dynamic ambience in which traditional methods such as net present value fail to evaluate investments. For the management team, the more uncertain the market is, the more value it adds to the option to wait and postpone the issuance. Given that stock prices fluctuate randomly over time and follow the Geometric Brownian Motion, the Monte Carlo Simulation provides the forecasted stock prices to help the decision making process and also to value the timing option. Therefore, the entrepreneur is willing to wait for positive price shocks before taking the firm public. As a consequence of optimally exercising the timing option IPOs should occur after abnormal price increases. Any firm contemplating an IPO should factor the timing option into the decision. The main reason for the IPO can be either capital raising or the desire to increase the shares’ liquidity but, in all cases, the benefit of going public should be greater than the value of the timing option and issuing shares from private equity.

Apresentamos
exemplos simulados e reais para ilustrar o modelo. / [en] In this thesis we consider a state space model for bivariate observations of count data. The approach used to solve the non analytical integrals that appears as the solution of the resulting non-Gaussian filter is a natural extension of the methodology advocated by Durbin and Koopman (DK). In our approach the aproximated Gaussian Model (AGM), has a diagonal Covariance matrix, while in the original DK, this is a
full matrix. This modification make it possible to use univariate Kalman recursoes to construct the AGM, resulting in a computationally more efficient solution for the estimation of a Bivariate Poisson model. This also facilitates the use of exact initialization of those recursions. The state vector is specified using the structural approach, where the state elements are components which have direct interpretation, such as
trend and seasonals. In our bivariate set up the dependence between the bivariate vector of time series is accomplished by use of common components which drive both series. We present both simulation and
real life examples illustrating the use of our model.
