[en] A NEW CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION FOR VISCOELASTIC MATERIALS AND ITS PERFORMANCE IN AN ABRUPT CONTRACTION / [pt] UMA NOVA EQUAÇÃO CONSTITUTIVA PARA MATERIAIS VISCOELÁSTICOS E SEU DESEMPENHO EM CONTRAÇÃO ABRUPTA 4:1RONEY LEON THOMPSON 03 May 2012 (has links)
[en] A new constitutive equation for the stress tensor is proposed. This equation allows fitting os stationary shear and elongational material functions experimental data due to the total discoupling of these functions. A local kinematic criteria of classifying flows is used in order to capture the influence of rigid body motion, pure shear flows and shear free flows to intermediate regions where the kinematics characteristics are in between these limit cases, making easy the analysis of complex flows.
The model was tested in a 4 for 1 abrupt contraction and some results were in good agreement with literature, like the vortex growth with increasing extensional power law index and the countrary effects of elastic and extensional propertys. The effects of changing a purely elastic property was studied for the first time, because tipical models cant isolate this effect.

[en] LOW FLOW LIMIT IN SLOT COATING PROCESS OF POLYMERIC SOLUTIONS / [pt] LIMITE DE VAZÃO MÍNIMA DO PROCESSO DE REVESTIMENTO POR EXTRUSÃO DE SOLUÇÕES POLIMÉRICASOLDRICH JOEL ROMERO GUZMAN 21 October 2003 (has links)
no escoamento.
consequentemente
os limites de operação do processo. Neste trabalho o
[en] Slot coating is a common method in the manufacture of a
wide variety of products. The thickness of the coated
liquid layer is set by the flow rate fed to the coating die
and the speed of the substrate, and is independent of other
process variables. An important operating limit of slot
coating is the minimum thickness that can be coated at a
given substrate speed, generally referred to as the low-
flow limit. For Newtonian liquids, the mechanism that
defines this limit balances the viscous, capillary and
inertial forces in the flow. Although most of the liquids
coated industrially are polymeric solutions and dispersions
that are not Newtonian, most of the previous analyses of
operability limits in slot coating dealt only with
Newtonian liquids. In the case of liquids made non-
Newtonian by polymer viscoelasticity, stresses can alter
the force balance in various parts of the coating bead and
consequently the onset of instability. In this work, the
low-flow limit in cases of non-Newtonian liquids is
examined by both theory and experiment. The Oldroyd-B and
Giesekus constitutive equations that approximate
viscoelastic behavior of polymer solutions were used,
together with momentum and continuity equations, to model
two-dimensional flow in the downstream part of a slot
coating bead. The equation system was solved with the
Finite Element Method. The results show how the viscoelastic
properties can affect the stress field in the liquid and
the force balance near and at the downstream meniscus,
thereby illustrating how non-Newtonian behavior can alter
the flow instabilities that determine the coating window of
slot coating. The flows themselves were visualized by video
microscopy and the low-flow limit was found by observing,
at given substrate speed, the feed rate at which the flow
becomes unstable. Different solutions of low molecular
weight polyethylene glycol and high molecular weight
polyethylene oxide in water were used in order to evaluate
the effect of mildly viscoelastic behavior on the process.

[en] BUCKLING OF VISCOELASTIC STRUCTURES / [pt] FLAMBAGEM DE ESTRUTURAS VISCOELÁSTICASWALTER MENEZES GUIMARAES JUNIOR 19 October 2006 (has links)
[pt] Este trabalho apresenta um modelo computacional aplicável
à análise de
sistemas estruturais viscoelásticos submetidos a grandes
deslocamentos, com
particular atenção ao fenômeno da instabilidade. A
definidas no espaço carga-deslocamentos, onde a ocorrência
flambagem viscoelástica envolve duas variáveis básicas: a
magnitude da carga
(carga crítica) e a duração da carga (tempo crítico). Os
exemplos apresentados
ilustram esses conceitos e fornecem resultados
interessantes a respeito dos efeitos
da viscoelasticidade sobre a flambagem em diferentes
sistemas estruturais. / [en] This thesis presents a computational model for the
analysis of viscoelastic
structures undergoing large displacements, with particular
attention to unstable
phenomena. The discrete model utilizes two-dimensional
isoparametric finite
elements in the analysis of columns, frames, arches and
axially symmetric shells.
The elastic stability of the system is verified along the
equilibrium paths in the
multidimensional load-displacements space, with
bifurcation or limit points
indicated by sign changes of the pivot of the tangent
stiffness at every incremental
step. A linear viscoelastic model for the material is
included, allowing for the
consideration of the effect of loading time on the
buckling load for the structure.
Thus, the mechanism leading to loss of stability,
corresponding to viscoelastic
buckling, involves two basic variables: load magnitude and
duration of the load,
designated as critical load and critical time. The
examples presented herein
enlighten such concepts and provide interesting results
about viscoelastic effects
on buckling of different structural systems.

[en] HDPE CHARACTERIZATION BEFORE AND AFTER AGING IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS AND MEDIUM / [pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DE PEAD ANTES E APÓS ENVELHECIMENTO EM DIFERENTES MEIOS E CONDIÇÕESANDRES FELIPE CRUZ BECERRA 19 April 2016 (has links)
corrente a 50 graus celsius durante 1 e 2 semanas e no óleo padrão BASIC OB 440 a 70 graus celsius durante 1, 2 e 5 semanas.
a variação do desempenho mecânico do polímero.
melhor descrição gráfica e aproximação matemática do comportamento
experimental. / [en] The interest of this work was based on the study of the influence of different
aging conditions and medium in mechanical, thermal, structural and chemical
properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) used for the manufacture of line
pipes for transporting oil and gas. Prototypes for type-V tensile testing according
to ASTM D 638. For development this work, the samples were submitted to
different types of aging in different medium, namely: i) UV irradiation with a
radiant energy with 365 nm of wavelengths and exposure times of 8, 12 and 18
weeks; ii) For aging under temperature, the samples were immersed in three
different types of lubricating oil, to 50, 70 and 90 celsius degree for periods of 2, 3, 4 and 6
months; iii) aging under pressure, where the samples were submitted to 7, 14 and
17 bar and immersed in ordinary water at 50 celsius degree for 1 and 2 weeks and pattern Oil
BASIC B 440-70 celsius degree for 1, 2 and 5 weeks. The aged samples was characterized
by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential
scanning calorimetric, thermal gravimetric analysis, tensile and creep tests, melt
flow rate, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The results of the
characterization of the samples after aging were compared with the results
obtained from virgin HDPE, whose properties were obtained using the same
characterization methods. Besides, was evaluated, the viscoelastic behavior of the
HDPE, by mathematical simulation of viscoelastic models, based on experimental
results of creep tests before and after aging. The results showed that mechanical
behavior of HDPE after aging was strongly influenced by different variables, such
as temperature, pressure, medium and exposure time. Since the sum of each effect
generated by each parameter contributes to the variation of the mechanical
performance of the polymer. Whichever the external variable imposed on HDPE -
temperature, time, pressure, or exposure medium - always leads to changes in
mechanical properties. However, depending on which of the parameters
mentioned above is predominant, the aging HDPE will be more or less relevant.
Simulating the creep behavior, the four parameters model was the one who
presented the best graphic and mathematical description approximation of the
experimental behavior.

[en] INFLUENCE OF VISCOELASTICITY AND SHEAR ON THE DYNAMIC STABILITY OF BEAMS AND TUBES / [pt] INFLUÊNCIA DA VISCOELASTICIDADE E DO CISALHAMENTO NA ESTABILIDADE DINÂMICA DE VIGAS E TUBOSOSCAR FABRICIO ZULETA INCH 12 August 2014 (has links)
aplicação do amortecimento proporcional e viscoelástico. As cargas
[en] Structures with non-conservative loads can lose stability either by
divergence, when static response amplitude increases monotonically, or by flutter,
through oscillations with exponentially increasing amplitudes. Several aspects
concerning the influence of damping and shear on the dynamic stability of beams
and tubes are studied. A special-purpose computer program has been developed,
enabling critical loads and time history responses to be obtained applying the
finite element method to formulation of the equations. Results of Euler-Bernoulli
and Timoshenko beams are compared for a number of alternative formulations of
proportional and viscoelastic damping. Tubes are modeled with tridimensional
elements implemented with additional incompatible modes. Viscoelastic damping
is introduced in the constitutive relations of the material, acting on deviatoric
strains. Flutter loads are calculated through the characteristic eigenvalue problem
obtained applying the Laplace’s transform to the momentum equation. In the
dynamic analysis an implicit method is used for time integration and a second
order algorithm is used in the integration of viscoelastic constitutive relations. The
results show that, for some types of damping, the responses obtained taking into
account shear strains change qualitatively the behavior of the flutter load,
including certain paradoxical phenomena, as damping is increased.

[en] PORESCALE ANALYSIS OF OIL DISPLACEMENT BY POLYMER SOLUTION / [pt] ANÁLISE DO DESLOCAMENTO DE ÓLEO POR SOLUÇÕES POLIMÉRICAS EM MICROESCALANICOLLE MIRANDA DE LIMA 12 May 2016 (has links)
[en] Water flooding is the most commonly used oil recovery method in the oil industry. However, the high mobility ratio between the water and oil phases limits the amount of oil displaced by the water phase. An effective alternative to minimize this problem is the application of technologies that act as mobility control agents. Polymer solution is used in many cases as a way to increase the water phase viscosity and consequently reduce the mobility ratio. Experimental evidences have shown that the elastic behavior of some polymer solution may not only improve the mobility ratio but also contribute to a better pore level oil displacement, reducing the residual oil saturation. This pore level behavior is not clearly understood. In this work, a glass microfluidic chip made of a 2-D array of channels is used as a two-dimensional porous space. This device has the principal features of a porous media and provides means for pore level flow visualization. A microscopic is used to monitor the evolution of the water phase as it displaces oil and images of the saturation profiles can be made. Three different water phases were used: pure water, a high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) solution and a glycerol-water mixture with the same viscosity of the polymer solution. Flow visualization provides specific information about the presence of the trapped oil phase and the movement of the oil/water interface in the network. Results show that the viscoelastic forces modify the liquid distribution in the porous media, improving the displacement efficiency at pore scale and consequently the residual oil saturation.

[en] NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF THE HUMAN SKIN UNDER EXPANSION / [pt] ANÁLISE NUMÉRICA E EXPERIMENTAL DO COMPORTAMENTO DA PELE HUMANA SOB EXPANSÃOCLAUDIO RIBEIRO CARVALHO 28 September 2004 (has links)
conhecimento do
conhecimento do
mostrando a
constitutivas,
procurando as melhores constantes viscoelásticas, que
descrevam o
comportamento da pele sob expansão. No estudo realizado,
avaliamos ainda as
as constantes
Estudos
recentes envolvendo a
constantes elásticas do
material. Com a análise dos resultados, mostramos o
comportamento da pele
humana, em seres vivos, em diferentes regiões do corpo. O
pele, a reconstrução
[en] The modeling of biological materials is really important

skin has a basic importance in the surgical processes.
Since 1957, one technique in plastic surgery, known as skin

been much used. This technique has as objective the
attainment of an additional
amount of skin, for the use in the burned patients, breast

This work has as objective supply to doctors the knowledge
of the skin
behavior, through a numerical and experimental analysis,
when submitted to the
expansion process.
During the development of this work, we will show the
methodology used
to study the human skin and the results reached with the

patients submitted to this type of surgical process.
To reach the objective, different constitutive equations
had been studied,
looking for the best viscoelastic constants, to describe
the behavior of the skin
under expansion. In the study, we also evaluate the changes
of the constants
during the evolution of the expansion and the behavior of
the skin in different
regions of the human body.
In the presented results, we find maximum errors for the
constants of the
adopted constitutive equation, to be in 28 percent order. Recent
studies involving the
human skin present errors in the order of 75 percent, for the
elastic constants of the
material. With the analysis of the results, we will be show
to the behavior of the
human skin, in vivo, in different regions of the body.
The knowledge of a constitutive equation, that is, of the
behavior of the stresses
and strains that occur in the skin during the expansion
process, will provide to the doctors the possibility to
evaluate the diverse techniques used in the plastic
surgery: The expansion of skin, breast reconstruction,
analysis of sutures,
analysis of scars, behavior of the skin during an incision,
face lifting, and other
applications.
