L’émergence d’un discours féministe dans la fiction courte de Nathaniel Hawthorne (1832-1844) : l’écriture du devenir-femme / The emergence of a feminist speech in the short fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1832-1844 ) : the writing of woman-becoming

L’élaboration de portraits féminins reflète la fascination de Hawthorne pour cette créature complexe, un attrait nourri par l’omniprésence des femmes dans son entourage. L’influence de ces dernières est indéniable, et semble être à l’origine du féminisme ambigu de l’écrivain, partagé entre, d’un côté, l’héritage puritain des Manning et Hawthorne, et, de l’autre, les convictions féministes émergentes de sa belle-famille, les Peabody. Les portraits de femmes de la fiction hawthornienne se caractérisent donc par un binarisme essentialisme-différentialisme qui émane de la vision étroite des protagonistes masculins, et que l’auteur tente de dépasser. Les concepts deleuziens du « mineur » et du « devenir-femme » nous seront d’une grande utilité pour comprendre comment la femme essentialisée des Puritains, ce que nous pouvons aussi appeler la femme-image, au sens lacanien du terme, est en réalité une femme minorée car amputée de son esprit et de son rôle social. Hawthorne témoigne ainsi d’un féminisme équivoque, une voix qu’il a du mal, par moments, à assumer et affirmer complètement. / Female portraits are abundant in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fiction, short stories and novels alike. The influence of the women evolving in his private sphere may be at the origin of his ambiguous feminist vision, as his allegiance was divided between his Puritan inheritance (both the Mannings and the Hawthornes) on the one hand, and, on the other, the emerging feminist convictions of his in-laws (the Peabodys). Hawthorne’s female portraits are thus characterized by a tendency to binarism as they pit an essentialist view of women against a differentialist one. This binarist perspective reflects the narrow-mindedness of the patriarcal system which the male heroes try to defend and maintain. Deleuze and Guatarri’s concepts of “minor literature” and “becoming-woman” will help us understand how the woman-image of the Puritans is a minored woman in the realm both of the social order and the symbolic order. Hawthorne’s feminist voice is an equivocal one as his text is undergoing a subterranean process of “becoming-woman.”

Symbolisation et vie spirituelle : analyse de l'humain comme être de symbolisation en devenir, entre psychanalyse (Winnicott) et vie spirituelle (Légaut)

Questionnant avec J.-C. Breton les situations anthropologiques nouvelles qui interpellent la vie spirituelle, cette étude en propose une approche sous l’angle de la symbolisation. Une lecture de la symbolisation à partir de la structure même du symbole précède l’analyse de son usage psychanalytique selon Winnicott, avec ses notions d’espace potentiel et de phénomènes transitionnels. Suit l’exposé de points clés du témoignage de Marcel Légaut sur la vie spirituelle. La partie synthèse détaille trois éléments clés de la symbolisation : la brisure-faille, la créativité-accueil et le passage à un autre niveau. Deux niveaux de symbolisation, primaire et secondaire, complètent la trame partagée par la lecture de la psychanalyse et de la vie spirituelle. L’étude démontre que la symbolisation permet un passage en l’humain vers son propre mystère et celui de Dieu en lui. L’humain se présente alors comme être de symbolisation en devenir. / Questioning with J.-C. Breton the new anthropological situations which call out to the spiritual life, this study proposes an approach under the angle of the symbolization. A reading of the symbolization from the structure of the symbol, precedes the analysis of its psychoanalytical use according to Donald W. Winnicott, with his notions of potential space and transitional phenomena. Follows the presentation of key points of Marcel Légaut's testimony on the spiritual life. The synthesis part details three key elements of the symbolization: the crack-fault ligne, the creativity-welcoming and the passage to another level. Two levels of symbolization, primary and secondary sector, complete the weft shared by the reading of the psychoanalysis and the spiritual life. The study demonstrates that the symbolization allows a passage into the human being towards his own mystery and that of the God in him. The human being appears then as a being of symbolization in the process of becoming.

Representation of displacement in the exhibition Dis-Location/Re-Location

Identity always presupposes a sense of location and a relationship with others and the representation of identity most often occurs precisely at the point when there has been a displacement (Bhabha cited in Papastergiadis 1995:17, emphasis added). In this study I focus on the condition of displacement, placing emphasis on the disjunctures of identity arising from temporal and physical dislocations and relocations in historical and postapartheid South African contexts. Displacement, and the attendant senses of dislocation and alienation it may evoke, is explored with reference to three selected female personae. For each persona, displacement is shown to provoke transmutations in subjectivity and identity, resulting in disjunctive identities and relationships with place. Their individual narratives raise questions around the consequences of displacement for a sense of (un)belonging and the (re)making of identities across geographical, cultural, temporal, ethnic and environmental borders. The pivotal role displacement plays in the processes of formation and transformation of subjectivity and identity is foregrounded. Familial histories of diasporic displacement, together with colonial legacies that have shaped my subject position as a white, middle-class, female South African woman, are interlaced with a recounting of personal experience of displacement in postapartheid South Africa. This personal sense of displacement, experienced between the years 2000 to 2006, is extended to a discussion on what is argued to be collective forms of white, English-speaking South Africans’ dislocation during the same time period. I suggest that their sense of displacement was experienced in relation to the uncertainty of their subject positions in postapartheid South Africa. In the practical and theoretical components of the degree, I consider how the three personae’s subjectivities are practiced and lived from their different space-time continuums. This exploration prompts further questions around how the effects of displacement on subjectivity and new identity formations are contingent upon each persona’s relation to the Other of colonial discourse, or the other-strangerforeigner within. Although there are marked differences between their colonial, diasporic and postcolonial contexts, a central theme that underpins the study is that the three conditions of displacement are linked by disjunctures arising from processes of dislocation, alienation, relocation and adaptation. Each persona’s epistemological reality is shown to comprise multiple ambivalences and ambiguities, and is marked by processes of cultural contestation and inner conflict. Their ambivalences and ambiguities encompass slippages between positions of inclusion and exclusion; insider and outsider; inhabitant and immigrant; alienation and belonging; placelessness and locatedness; homely and unhomely that the experience of uprooting and relocating foregrounds. While displacement is understood in terms of trauma and conflict, this condition is also regarded as a generative space of possibility for the emergence of new identity formations. Using my experiences of self-transformation and renegotiation of my identity through processes of cultural contact and exchange as a departure point, I consider ways in which collective white, English-speaking South Africans’ cultural identities are being reformulated, renegotiated or ‘hybridised’ in postapartheid South Africa as a transforming, postcolonial society. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Visual Arts / unrestricted

Deterritorialized male subjectivity : liminality, in-betweenness, and becoming in migrant literary and cultural contexts

Cette thèse résulte de la recherche d’un sujet dépourvu de tout repère à ses liens relationnels. Elle rompt les territorialités de la narration et va au-delà des seuils du sujet, à travers des mouvements rhizomiques et en suivant les lignes littéraires et culturelles qui permettent d’échapper aux forces emprisonnantes d’assujettissement. Cette étude trait des sites marginalisés de la transformation et de la dislocation, en passant par les sites de la résistance et de la décolonisation. Ma lecture de la littérature migrante et, des littératures indigènes, la déterritorialisation et la décolonisation s’entrelacent en trois sites majeurs au sein: la liminalité, l’intermédiaritéé et le devenir. Ces sites ne représentent pas seulement les formes esthétiques innovantes qui traversent les seuils de l’identité dans notre culture contemporaine, mais ils assistent aussi ce projet à son but ultime de réinventer et de réarranger la relation entre le soi et l’autre vers de nouveaux débuts. Cette nouvelle perspective munie de l’éthique de s’engager dans la situation, s’abstient d’émettre un jugement et entend prévoir des possibilités d’une transformation révolutionnaire aux niveaux politique, social et économique. Dans ce projet, les mouvements de déterritorialisation émergent dans les écrits et les productions artistiques de Richard Mosse, Chris Abani, Rawi Hage, Leslie Marmon Silko et Thomas King et fournissent les possibilités d’une certaine réflexion sur les seuils de différents sujets masculins en crise. Ce projet s’adresse, en premier lieu, à la Chose sous-jacente qui se déplace entre-deux territoires et perturbe le désire de capturer son essence; en revanche, suivant Deleuze et Guattari, elle se déplace avec les mouvements nomadiques des sujets masculins qui deviennent des simulacres assujettis dans divers sites de désapprentissage. À titre d’exemple, ces sites de désapprentissages illustrés dans Incoming et The Castle de Richard Mosse dissocient la matérialité du déplacé de son image et informe le discours sur les façons à travers lesquelles l’existence est mise en danger, limitée et violée par la représentation. À travers GraceLand d’Abani, ce projet examine des modes de liminalité et des cérémonies d’initiation et reconnaît les expériences vécues des sujets masculins dans des structures culturelles différentes. Dans les romans de Rawi Hage, j’explore les façons à travers lesquelles la masculinité s’arrange ou se réarrange, de façon créative, dans des actes de performance. Cette thèse revient sur le sujet de la liminalité par le biais de Ceremony de Silko et de la narration post-apocalyptique de l’identité de Thomas King. L’analyse aborde certain des enjeux que les hommes indigènes et ceux qui affirment les identités masculines doivent affronter. Ainsi, dans le dernier chapitre, la convergence harmonieuse des voix indigènes et des littératures indigènes et migrantes situe ces lignes de fuite qui pourraient se rejoindre ou refuser de se croiser, ou se désintégrer dans le flot de la violence. / This dissertation stems from the search for a subject without reference to the webs of relations that hold it. Through rhizomatic movements, it breaks territorialities of narrative and moves beyond the subject’s thresholds by following literary and cultural lines of escape away from imprisoning forces of subjugation. The investigation flows along marginalized sites of transformation and displacement and through sites of resistance and decolonization. In my readings of migrant and Indigenous literatures, deterritorialization and decolonization intertwine at three major sites: liminality, in-betweenness, and becoming. These sites are not only innovative aesthetic forms that cross the threshold of identity in our contemporary culture; they also participate in the project of reinventing and rearranging the relation of self and other toward new beginnings. The new perspectives that are offered engage ethically, avoid judgment, and foresee the possibilities for revolutionary political, social, and economic transformation. The movements of deterritorialization that emerge within the writings and artistic production of Richard Mosse, Chris Abani, Leslie Marmon Silko, Thomas King and Rawi Hage provide possibilities for reflection at the thresholds of different male subjects in crisis. This project first addresses the underlying Thing that moves in between territories and confounds the desire to capture its essence; instead, following Deleuze and Guattari, it moves along with the male subjects’ nomadic movements as they become desubjectified simulacra in various sites of unlearning. In Richard Mosse’s Incoming and The Castle, for example, such a site of unlearning separates the materiality of the displaced from its image and informs discourse about the ways in which representation endangers, limits and violates existence. Through Abani’s GraceLand, this project further investigates modes of liminality and initiation ceremonies and acknowledges the lived experiences of male subjects in different cultural structures. In Rawi Hage’s novels, I explore the ways masculinity arranges or rearranges itself creatively in acts of performance. The dissertation also again turns to liminality by way of Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony, and Thomas King’s post-apocalyptic narrative of identity. In this way, the harmonious conjunction of Indigenous voices and Indigenous and migrant literatures attempts to locate where these lines of escape might come together, refuse to cross, or crumble back upon themselves in flows of violence.

The Becoming-other of the Existence, Essay on Contemporary Phenomenology, is both a systematic and a historical study of phenomenology. By choosing a systematic problem of becoming-other of the existence it attempts to present and to confront five major contemporary phenomenologists in France within a single phenomenological field: Henri Maldiney, Claude Romano, Jean-Luc Marion, Renaud Barbaras, and Marc Richir. The study enters phenomenology with Edmund Husserl and presents some key original concepts invented by two generations of post-husserlian authors who marked out the road to contemporary phenomenology: Martin Heidegger, Erwin Straus, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jan Patočka, Emmanuel Lévinas. Then it turns to "evential empiricism" in the work of Maldiney and Romano who consider the existent and the world in their belonging-together: the event is thus understood as co-birth of the subject and the world. The starting point of this work is the concept of indigenous animism in Félix Guattari's late work at the end of his life, understood as a form of subjectivity operating through different regimes of signs than the "modern" one. These animist semiotics are "polysemic" and "trans-individual," while instead of building a sharp division between the spheres of "nature" and "culture", they inhabit reality by "collective entities half-thing half-soul, half- man half-animal, machine and flow, matter and sign." The aim of most of the following text is then primarily to trace these semiotics across the joint work of Deleuze and Guattari. After introducing the context of Deleuze's philosophy and its specific "image of thought," and explaining its basic concepts, we will focus on the description and comparison of the semiotic "ethnographies" of Anti-Oedipus and A Thousand Plateaus. The first volume traces the "universal history" of the ways of hominization (becoming human) of man from the state of nature, through various forms of inscription, which constitute society and culture. The thesis How Do Ordinary Party Members Perceive Themselves? The Case of the KDU-CSL explores both the relation between an ordinary party member and his political party and his role within the party. Therefore, the subject or our research represents the ordinary party member of the KDU-CSL defined as a member without any elected or executive political office. The theoretical framework of the thesis refers to a range authors concerning with political parties and their organisational aspects. The principal empirical part of the thesis is devoted to an analysis of party members in two Czech regions - Prague and the South Moravian region. The thesis is based on the primary qualitative research (semi-structured in-depth interviews and content textual analysis) conducted by the author herself.

Cette thèse s’intéresse aux souffrances morales dans la philosophie de Vladimir Jankélévitch, plus particulièrement le remords, l’ennui et la nostalgie. L’analyse suit deux axes, d’abord un axe herméneutique où il s’agit de comprendre la signification de ces souffrances en les replaçant dans une anthropologie philosophique et une ontologie qui leur donne sens. Ensuite un axe thérapeutique qui indique comment ces formes de souffrances peuvent orienter le devenir de manière à vivre plus harmonieusement. Sur ces bases, la thèse élabore une étude en profondeur de la joie chez Jankélévitch, laquelle s’est dessinée en creux dans l’analyse des souffrances. En effet, le remords permet de bien comprendre le lien puissant entre la joie et l’amour. Les analyses de l’ennui et de la nostalgie permettent quant à elles de saisir son ancrage temporel. / This thesis investigate the question of moral suffering in the philosophy of Vladimir Jankélévitch, specifically remorse, boredom and nostalgia. The analysis uses two different perspectives. First of all, a hermeneutic one working on the meaning of these sufferings and showing their roots in a philosophical anthropology and in an ontology. Secondly, a therapeutic point of view showing how these suffering can help becoming more harmoniously. Based on this analysis, this thesis concludes on an analysis of joy. The analysis of remorse permits to seize the fundamental love dynamic at work in joy. The analysis of boredom and nostalgia provide the temporal part of it.

Thinking with Ai Stratis : Becoming-Tourist, Becoming-Researcher in a More-Than-Human-World

This study discusses the difference between thinking with and about the island of Ai Stratis for knowledge production, advocating for situated research and embodied experience. Having conducted an ethnographic study, on the island of Ai Stratis in the North Aegean region of Greece in the summer of 2021, I look out from the island, assuming a tree-fold research field, including the physical island of Ai Stratis, a plane of reflexivity, as well as a literary plane. From there, I propose that research method assemblages perform reality,rather than solely describing it, and that foregrounding and backgrounding voices is a micro-political process with far-reaching consequences. I look at what is meant by a multiple reality, the relevance of ethics and care in more-than-human entanglements, and multiple worldings for sustainability understood as futurity. What more, I speak about how those entanglements blur species and material boundaries and how things and beings become with one another through molecular contagion whilst forming shifting assemblages. Discussing Ai Stratis as an island, I speak about some of the lure and danger of falling into geographical determinism and representational thinking. Further, I propose that dwelling in landscape whilst using all the senses (not only sight) may be a step towards practicing noticing and learning to be affected. I argue against strictly representational thinking and against a faceless mass of uniformity, and for the individual, intimate, face-to-face, situated, and embodied. Finally, I extend an invitation to have a conversation about guest-host relations, founded on particular, situated relationships of trust, care, respect, and a willingness to engage with change. I discuss this in the context of my entanglement as a stranger with the human and non-human hosts on Ai Stratis, as well as in a multispecies and a more-than-human, and metaphysical context of sustainability
